Failuare to read space on DVD

Hi,
I am Vivian. Recently I bought some blank DVDs to burn some of my downloaded movies.
I inserted a brand new DVD, and it reads 0 bytes.
Then I inserted another one, and it reads 4.7 GB. And I burned this one successfully. One day later, I tried several other new blank DVDs, and it kept reading 0 bytes, and the DVD burner verified that by saying that there are no space on the DVD while in fact it is brand new with lots of space.
I also tried a different brand of DVD: the first one I tried was Fugi-Film DVD + R. Then I tried Verbatim DVD-R. And for both DVDs, the drive fail to read space.
A side note: I thought maybe I needed to format my DVD, and tried to format it with Sonic-DLA, and as soon as the formatting complets the laptop shuts down and the screen says "beginning to dump physical memory due to some failure...and it suggests that I check that all hardware are properly installed..."
I really need answers as to how to get my DVD drive to read space on DVD properly.
Thanks,
Vivian

what model is your laptop?

  • IMac G5 cant read and write DVD-R

Hi. I have iMac G5 1.9 with Superdrive MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 with Firmware Revision: FA0G. Everything was OK, I was able to burn DVD-R and DVD+R too, but now Superdrive ejects all DVD-R disks. I cant burn it, I cant read it. DVD+R are working correctly.
System Profile is saying, that I can burn DVD-R and DVD+R:
    D-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
but everythime I try it, the disk is ejected.
What is a problem? Can anybody help please.
    Thank you.

    To Apple Discussions!
Make sure you have enough storage space to burn.
Make sure the DVDs are not scratched, smudged and/or dirty.

If your drive needs cleaning, cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
Also, check your Mac OS Help Menu for troubleshooting tips. In the search field type dvd.
You can also open up the "Utilites Folder">Disk Utility.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the black ? mark inside the purplecircle.
The help window will open up.
Enter dvd in the search field.

  • Should I be able to read burned DL DVD's?

The Superdrive in out first generation iMac G5 doesn't appear to read dual-layer DVD's that I burned on my G5 tower. The disks are Verbatim DVD+R DL. The same disks (obviously) read fine on the tower, as well as on an older Sony firewire drive attached to the same iMac.
The drive whirs and clunks for a few minutes, then spits them out without comment. Seems this should work, but I never tried it until now - so I don't know if this is new behaviour. Normal, or a problem?

Try reading a regular commercial movie DVD with Apple's DVD player. If that works, then the drive was made before DL became popular enough to be considered by Apple's built-in DVD players. Earlier DVD players were only for DVD-R single layer, and DVD-ROM. You can also find out more about the kind of discs your computer will read by going to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info -> Disc Burning inside System Profiler, as well as reading the ATA/IDE bus to learn which make and model burner is in your machine.

  • Tecra M5: DVD drive does not read these mini DVDs

I have canon dvd handycam, and mini dvd works on it. One month back i recorded movie and pictures on mini dvd using handycam and ran mini dvd on my tecra M5 dvd drive, it worked very fine.
Now after 1 month i have 5 mini dvds with movies and pictures which i took on 1 month vacation in diffierent countries, i tried my best but tecra dvd drive does not read these mini dvd, cd drive label appears instead dvd drive when i put mini dvd in it.
All other standard size dvds, cds working fine on it.Its complicated and as well as irritating.
    Any suggestions?
    Why its messedup?

Seems the lens cannot read this miniDVDs. Possibly the drive lens cannot calibrate and therefore the miniDVDs are nonreadable.
Try the solution from sascha. Maybe youre a lucky man and it works.
If not, try to remove the drive physically from the notebook. Reboot the notebook without the drive. The Windows and BIOS shouldnt recognize the drive.
Then shuts down again, put the drive into the notebook and boot up the unit.
The notebook should recognize the drive and should indicate the firmware again.
Im not sure if this will help you but its attemptable

Sorry, but the chance of ever getting PM to work on Windows 8 is somewhere
    near zero.

  • SUPERDRIVE reads ALL my DVD's EXCEPT ONE!!!:: My Windows 7 Home Premium. WHY IS THIS?????

iMac reads all my DVD's except one my WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM INSTALL DVD!
The windows dvd works fine on a pc so I know it's not the DVD.
Now I have seen people posting that their Superdrive doesn't work, or that it only reads cd's - I DONT HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS!
I reiterate my Superdrive reads ALL DVD's EXCEPT MY WINDOWS & HOME PREMIUM INSTALL DVD.
Is the Superdrive designed specifically to reject windows software? Absurd as it sounds this is the only logical conclusion.
This is what i have been trying to do over the last 4 days:
I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium DVD so I can partition my Hard drive and devote 100gb to Windows.
I have a late 2009 iMAC running the latest Mountain Lion OS.
I have cleaned the Superdrive by putting a credit card and microfibre cloth like people have suggested. If it was dirty or required cleaning then surely it wouldn't play any DVD and not just the Windows DVD? anyway that didn't work either.
Since the Superdrive reads the Windows 7 DVD once every 30 or so tries when it is eventually recognised I try to install it via bootcamp. Each attempt windows stops, the first time I got as far as the windows is loading screen and was stuck on that screen for 2 hours and was forced to power off, the second time I got as far as please load a driver or something and press any key with a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen, pressing keys did nothing.
I have tried to install windows via USB like some people have suggested.
I can not boot from my USB.
Some people have said Bootcamp will not allow you to but there is a work-around by going into .info and editing in my iMac version via textedit, which I have done.
    Still can't boot from USB.
The USB has been formatted to Mac journal and all windows files copied from DVD to the USB and there is an .iso on the USB also.
    Still can't boot from USB.
I have partitioned my Hard drive via Disk Utility but can't find a way to install windows on said partition since it never appears in Startup Disk.
Starting to believe there is a conspiracy here.
    Please help.

    Hi genejitsu,
Did you happen to find the cause of this? My Macbook Pro is having the exact same issue. Only my Windows 7 discs don't work and they aren't scratched and nice and clean. It's both the 32 and 64 DVDs that don't work.
    Cheers
    Shaun

  • What DVD formats can read iMac recorded DVDs?

    Hello All,
I have a new intel based 20 inch iMac. When I record a video to a DVD with my iMac I'm I safe in assuming that everyone I send it to will be able to view it on their players? Is there a list someone that lists the formats that will read iMac recorded DVDs? Are they universal?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

If you are talking about DVD video format (i.e. using iDVD)...
It's not so much a function of the Mac, or the DVD recorder as much as what media you use. Most recent DVD players should be able to handle just about anything, but some older ones don't handle all formats well. For instance, some may like +R disks, and others may like -R disks. Others may not like RW disks. Some very old players may not properly play any burned media.
If there's one or two particular models you are going to be using to play your disks, visit their company's website and read the specs for that drive. You can usually get user manuals for the older drives. If you can't find any specs, then you will have to experiment with different media, testing them in your target players.

  • Problems reading Mac OS DVDs after installing 10.4.11

OK - I guess I should have read the many posts out there about the problems with this software update. However, I did not and now am encountering two bizarre problems. Perhaps someone out there can help.
I own a Macbook and downloaded 10.4.11 this morning. Everything was running just fine until then. Now I have two problems:
    1) it cannot read Mac OS DVDs (neither the new Leopard disks I just got, nor the original backups of 10.4.9 that came with the macbook). The disks are fine and can be read without a problem by my iMac. The drive on the macbook is fine since it can read other DVDs (e.g., iLife 08 DVD, movie DVDs). It seems to be limited to OS 10.4 and 10.5 installation CDs.
    2) a smaller but also annoying thing is that my apple-supplied stocks widget is reading wrong stock prices.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Macbook Pro doesn't read Double layer DVD ?

I have a Macbook Pro 15", about 4-5 years old, and it isn't reading a double layer DVD? Is there anyway of reading this DVD in this machine?
I have even tried reading it through my 1 year old Macbook on that DVD drive which does read DVD DL and it still doesn't work?
How come it doesn't read this Verbatim DVD-DL but when you install software from elsewhere it does read the DVD's, which are also DL are they not?

Okay. Well my Macbook Pro allows other DVD's to be viewed in the drive, and the DL DVD that has the media on it works on the Macbook but not the Pro. And of course the Macbook Pro doesn't write to DL, it is only supposed to read DL, so the media was burnt on the Macbook and not the Pro, so I don't think it is the DVD or the drive.
Therefore I am a little bit lost. If anyone else has any other clues I would be greatful, I will clean the drive in the meantime.
    Thanks, Ian
