Failure during Firmware for MacBook update?

I just got my Macbook back from Apple today after sending it in to have the wristpad bezel and heatsink replaced. When I got on the machine today the first thing I did was run software update. I downloaded the new firmware installer, and let it do its thing, after reading the instructions thoroughly (of course). As soon as it rebooted to install firmware, the system froze after startup at a grey screen, no status bar and no spinning wheel. I let it sit like that for approx. 45 mins, then shut it down. I then tried to start it back up, but it just sits at that grey screen. If I do a single or double PRAM reset, I can get in, but as soon as I reboot, same thing occurs. I did do a 4 bell PRAM reset at first, but as of now I am stumped. The one thing that puzzled me the most was after the failure and PRAM reset, I got a message saying that the "Firmware was successfully updated!" And if I manually DL and run installer on Firmware update, installer reports back that this machine does not need to be updated......
MACHINE INFO:
Macbook 1.83 Intel Core Duo/ 512MB DDR/OSX 10.4.7
ANY IDEAS?? I pray that this is not an isolated issue, and that I didn't eff this machine.
Kind Regards....
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.83 Intel Core Duo/ 512mb

  • SMC-Firmware for MacBook Pro 2010 (7,1)

    Hey,
I have a serious problem with my 13-inch MacBook Pro Late 2010 (Modell 7,1): a few days after shipping Mountain Lion, Apple has shipped a wrong update for me via "Software Updates" the in the AppStore. To name it: I received a SMC-Update for a 2010 MacBook Air.
My Mac was broken afterwards but due to the help of an experienced friend of mine, we were able to bypass SMC and to install a SMC-Firmware of a MacBook Pro 5,1 (Code: 1.32f8). Why this Firmware and not mine? There is no 7,1 SMC download on the Apple Support Page for my MacBook Pro.
Although it should be able for Apple to deliver a 7,1 SMC Firmware to me, they are not willing to do so. I have tried the 8,1 13" SMC-Firmware which is not working for me.
My question is: first of all, out to all the owners of a MacBook Pro 7,1: would it be able to "extract" their SMC-Firmware (maybe create an installer.pkg) and send it to me? Or does anyone have an ideo how to solve my problem?
I would be very happy to hear from you soon!

  • Power Failure during 10.6.8 update

I had just started the 10.6.8 and other software update when my circuit breaker blew. Got power back, Mac Pro started up OK. I'm on it now. I'm still showing 10.6.7 and the software updater shows all the same software I'm supposed to update as before the crash. I'm pretty sure nothing installed and I was just at the beginning of downloading.
But I'm wondering if I need to do anything, any cleanup of partially downloaded files? Run Disk Utility or Disk Warrior, check my files?
I did a bootable mirror backup to an external drive before starting the upgrade so I'm protected.
Being a prewar apartment but a new residence, the power seems unstable and the wiring is really old. I've changed a few light switches and the sheating just crumbles. Scary. I'm getting an APC battery backup tomorrow as this is not the first failure.
If it's it important to know what Updater says, here you go:
iWeb - 3.0.4 (never use tho)
iMove - 9.0.4 (never use tho)
    iPhoto - 9.1.5
Garage Band - 6.0.4 (never use tho)
iDVD - 7.1.2 (never use tho)
    OSX 10.6.8 v 1.1
Remote Desktop Client Update - 3.5.1
Dig Camera Raw Compatibility - 3.7
    iTunes - 10.4
    Java #5 for OS 10.6 - 1.0
    HP Printer software - 2.7
Anyway, should I do any maintenance or just try updating again with less electronic things running like my 2nd AC.
    Thanks,
    Steven

Yes Software Update says I need to update exactly the same files it did before the outage and I had basically just clicked the various Agree buttons and then a minute later, crash... So I'm quite sure nothing got installed. Matter of fact the progress bar was just getting oriented and first said 9 hrs to complete, then 8, the 7, etc.
I ran Disk Utility after starting off another drive and had no disk errors reported.
The ran Disk Warrior to check my files and got two unrepairable ones which I wonder if they have anything to do with the download, or not, and either way, should I trash them? Do you or anyone recognize these 2 bolded broken files and know what I should do if anything about them?

  • The recent firmware for Macbook Pro (2011) won't install

MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7
I tried to install this but all I got was the gray screen of doom. After 12 hours of the gray screen, unplugged and let the battery run down. Macbook booted up (yay) and the software update says it still needs to be installed.
Should I just skip it and play the rare odds?
    Thanks.

I had this same problem, but stopped it after 2 1/2 hours.  I did a hard shutdown (held down the power button until it powered down),  waited a few minutes and then started it back up.  Thank goodness the MBP came back.  Must be something wrong with this update.  Wonder if Apple knows about it?  Do their techs watch this forum?
First time I've had problems like this installing an Apple update.

  • Back Up During Firmware 2.1 Update

I've been trying to update my iPhone using iTunes 8, but there seems to be some kind of Zeno's paradox at work, because the further it gets along in the back up process, the slower it seems to be going. I left it running last night, and came back this morning to a restarted computer and an non-updated iPhone. I'm trying it again and it's been backing up for over 2 hours now. Is this "normal"? Why do back up times seem to have no relationship to what is actually on the iPhone?

The hare pulled through in the end.

  • IMac won't boot after power failure during 10.5.6 update

    Help!
Tried to update last night and at something like 80% install, we had a power cut. iMac won't boot at all now - get to a grey screen which tells me to restart. Don't have a wired keyboard. If I did - what are the steps to get this working again.
I believe I have a good backup, but don't want to risk as all the family photos are on the iMac.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the help, but can't even get to a screen where I could type anything! I know I'm being dumb here.

If your room is air conditioned, it should not only be cool but also relatively dry. And if you are simply moving your laptop to a different location when you leave your room, and that location will also be air conditioned, you'd be best off putting the laptop into a snug plastic bag while it's outside the cool rooms. That way, the humid air can't reach the laptop to condense on and in it.

  • How to update firmware for mac os x

I downloaded firmware for my MacBook Pro 2007. Can someone assist me with the installation. The firmware is on my desktop but I do not know which application to open it with? I am confused by all of the files.

    Hello Kappy,
Thank you for responding so quickly. I went online to Apple to update my MacBook Pro 2007 (Mac OS X 10.4.11) I have Firefox 3.6.28 as my internet connection. I downloaded the firmware to my MacBook Pro. I opened the Firmware restoration CD download and the following files were there:
    IM51_0090_08B.fd
    IM61_0093_05B.fd
    LICENSE
    MB21_00A5_06B.fd

    MP11_005C_04B.fd
    MP21_007F_02B.fd
    README
    XS11_0080_00B.fd
When I tried to open them to figure out which file I needed for the update. I received a message saying an application is needed to open the file(s). I do not know where to go from here. Do you have any idea how to proceed? I truly appreciate your support.

I browsed several boards and a huge set of websites but did find anything related.

At the first time yes, because i'm using an extra raid controller. That's because the environment 'boot-device' has to be set to a value different than 'disk'.
At the end of the jumpstart installation i have to type 'init 6' for reboot manually and the environment 'boot-device' has its default value. Thats why the server isn't boot and fall back to net boot.

  • Time Machine doesn't back up anymore due to a failure during copying. Get this message for several weeks. And all my back ups are lost!

Can anybody help me, because suddenly all my back ups on the the time capsule are gone, and time machine cannot make any back up due to a failure during copying. I already installed the latest firmware on the time capsule, but nothing seems to help. I also changed the back up disk to the HDD in my Mac (programs and mavericks are running on an SSD. Hope someone can help me out.

Check the TC disk with finder. The sparsebundle should still be there.. simply open it from Finder and mount the backups.
Follow Pondini's instructions to see if your files are there.
    Q15 here http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
You don't have to restore the files.. you are just checking the backup is accessible and intact.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I would also recommend you do a verify.. A5 in the reference above.
TM is problematic on Mavericks.. some of the problems are due to its poor networking.
Exactly how is the TC setup?? By that I mean is it wired to the main modem and doing either router or bridge?
Is the computer using wireless to the TC? If not please make sure the wireless connection is via the TC and not via modem router or extender.
I strongly recommend you reset the TC to factory. No files are deleted.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup of the TC.. please use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Do not use the names the airport utility setup wizard will recommend to you. eg TCgenx (base station name.. x can be a number which is your gen TC). Wireless name.. TCwifi.
Wireless Security will be WPA2 personal and use 10-20 character pure alphanumeric password with mix of case and numbers.
Reset TM as per A4 in the Pondini reference above.
If you still have issues.. manually mount the TC in the computer.. in Finder use Go, Connect to server.
AFP://TCgenx or AFP://10.0.1.1 (where you replace my example name with your actual name.. or replace the IP which is default with your actual IP).
The computer should find the network resource and request a password. Type that in (your disk access password) and save it in the keychain.
    Then try again with TM.
Strongly also recommend even if you get TM to work.. it is problematic on Mavericks.. buy CCC or one of the other 3rd party backups.. With CCC you can do a bootable clone to a USB drive.. easily the best way to get a dead Mac going again.

  • Why endless shutdown during booting? - Macbook Air 10.8.3 update

After updating from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 my Macbook Air 13" mid 2012 started to shutdown during booting.
I have tried to reset the SMC and PROMs several times with no result - still shutdown during booting.
The same result when starting in "safe" mode - shutdown in the end of booting.
When booting in verbose mode the last lines befor shutdown was:
AppleLMUController::smcReadKey received error 0x84 when reading key 'MSLD'
AppleLMUController::smcReadKey received error 0x84 when reading key 'ALV0'
It's no problem using the macbook air in target mode and use as the startup disk on another macbook.
The other mac start fine and run smoothly on the system 10.8.3 on the disk from the macbook air that shutdown during booting.
Before updating there was no problem with the computor...
    What to do?

Run the #12 OnyX cache clearing routine, it's a lot of stuff to do and will take awhile, but it's very through on reseting your sub-system items like it was when it came from the factory.
