Failure to boot after switching HDDs

I've installed Windows 7 on one HDD (SSD) and Arch on another HDD.  I don't have both HDDs in the system at the same time; I installed windows on the SSD without the standard HDD plugged in, after it was set up I unplugged the SSD and plugged in the standard HDD for Arch.  Arch installs and boots fine, I installed openbox and rebooted several times without issue.
When I unplug the Arch HDD and go back to windows SSD, then return to Arch, it wont boot.  Instead I get a black screen with a blinking cursor for a few seconds before returning to BIOS, which is the behavior my motherboard exhibits when it can't find anything to boot.
Furthermore, when I return to using the Windows SSD the USB devices stop working for a while.  They are fine at boot but once windows loads they turn off, after repeadly rebooting and waiting they eventually "magically" start working again.  This could be unrelated to the boot issue though.
Any ideas?

mrunion wrote:The Arch Wiki is a VERY good place for information. A simple, quick search for "dual boot" provides: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … _Dual_Boot
This is the guide I've been using and it's worked all the way up to the last step - booting windows after installing Arch fails.  I think the 40_cusom file is missing some options in the menuentry but I am still investigating.
Removing the 2nd (arch) HDD to boot into windows after following the guide returned me to my original problem; the USB ports stop working until windows decides to re-install them after several reboots.
Plugging the 2nd (arch) HDD back in makes the boot disappear.  Before removing the arch HDD the drive had 2 boot options, after re-inserting the drive it only has a single boot option (which doesn't work).

  • Failure to boot after restarting, no distinct pattern.

My Mac Pro has an issue where every third or fourth restart the mac will fail to boot, needing me to hold the power button until it turns off.
I get the grey apple and the spinning progress wheel for 30 seconds, then the screen stays grey and the apple is replaced by what looks like a circle with a diagonal bar through it. I believe this means something along the lines of 'No Bootable Directory Found'.
Before the 10.5.2 update this happened almost every restart. I'm using a Samsung Spinpoint 750gig drive as my boot drive, and the stock 500gig drive as a media disk.
I have tried several solutions. Repair permissions, Disk Utility from CD and run verify and repair disk, AHT extensive, TechTool Deluxe with surface scan, Format and Reinstall (twice), Memtest, NVRam.
Could the Samsung drive be bad even though I can't get any software to find a fault?

Here is a console log of the most recent failure to boot. The events here are a restart, a failure to boot, a forced off and a power on. Hopefully this helps.

  • IMac not booting after putting HDD in windows machine

Hi, I'm helping a friend repair an iMac G5 ALS (before the iSight ones)
The main problem is that it keeps switching itself off, or just not turning on at all, but i have ordered a new power supply to fix that.
The other problem is that, before I did anything to the mac, I put the hard drive in to my Windows Vista machine to back up important files. But the drive didnt appear in My Computer. So, I right-clicked on My Computer, went to Manage and then the Disk Management service. From here I right-clicked on the Mac drive that had appeared on this menu and then clicked 'Initialize' (I had done this before on a Windows HDD so it seamed like the logical thing to do) but nothing happened. (I now know that it wasn't recognized by Windows because of the different filesystem on macs)
I put the HDD back in the mac and waited for it to start playing ball. Eventually it decided to turn on, but instead of booting, it came up with the flashing question mark folder. I put the Leopard disk I have into the machine and it booted to the Leopard installer.
Using the disk utility I found that the hard drive was there so I verified and repaired it and rebooted but still just the flashing question mark folder comes up.
I'm fairly certain that it was the 'Initializing' that caused all the boot problems.
Any ideas anyone? Cheers in advance.

Welcome to Discussions - you will have to reinitialize the hard drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled) before it can be recognized by the machine. Boot from the Leopard disc and after you have selected English as your language, go to Tools (or whatever it is called, I don't have it in front of me)in the menu bar and select Disk Utility and reformat the drive.

  • MacBook Pro will not boot after switching graphics cards

    Dear All,
I have a late-2008 unibody MacBook Pro. I have had it since April 2009, and I have not encountered any real problems with it.
Yesterday, I switched to the 9600 graphics card for the first time since purchasing the machine. It logged me out as expected, but then proceeded to flash a blank blue screen at me for 20 minutes. Assuming that this was not normal, I powered down the computer by holding the power button. I powered it on again, and it will not get past the Apple symbol screen with the loading whirligig. I left it on for seven hours (overnight), and no change.
I booted it from the install disc and ran the Disk Utility verify and repair. It either gives me no problem or a block count error, which goes away when I run repair. I tried running verify on permissions, but this gives me a "failed to exit" or some such error, same with repair permissions. Restarting gives me the same apple logo screen until forever.
I've tried resetting PRAM, doing the battery removal and holding power button for 5 seconds, I've tried booting in safe mode (it won't), and doing an archive and install (which it can't do either, as it can't access my HDD or something). I've run the disk utility verify and repair several times.
I unfortunately don't have a recent backup (slapping myself), so I'm open to suggestions before going into despair over my $2600 paperweight before doing an erase and install...
    Thanks in advance!
PS: is there a way to open the computer in target disk mode via the install cd so that I CAN back it up?
    Message was edited by: Kaklz

Thanks, Joe. That may be an option if all else fails. I don't currently own an enclosure, so I am looking for an alternative before spending any money (I know, "frugal Apple user" is unheard of, but...).
I do have an old G3 tower, which I am using in the meantime, so if I can use this to open my MBP in target disk mode (or some other way of making a backup), I'd be overjoyed!

  • System won't boot after switching to higher performance

I recently installed snow leopard on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Things have going going very smoothly so far. However, I have had one setback. When switching to a different energy saver mode (either from higher performance to energy saver or vice versa), the computer won't boot back up. It will sit at the blue screen with the spinning wheel. Sometimes the wheel will freeze and the dock and my desktop will show up, but the computer is frozen. This forces me to do a manual shut down. This happens about every other time I try to boot my system into a different energy saver mode. Anybody else have a problem with this?

Hi DPer & welcome to the forums...
Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
If still no joy, did you update via Software Update or did you download the combo? If you used Software Update, get the Combo updater instead and re-apply:

In recent weeks I noticed signs that seemed to point to a failing hard drive. I took the machine to a Genius Bar. The genius tried Disk Utility and a quick diagnostic and could not reproduce an error, but he noted many, many I/O errors recorded in a log file.
He said I probably had a failing disk, but it might be a cable issue. He gave me two options: leave the machine with Apple overnight to run diagnostics and perhaps repair if the problem was confirmed, or just take a chance and replace the drive myself, for less money and less downtime.
I went to a local computer store, and the salesman there noted that I was using relatively little disk space. He suggested that I swap my failing 160 G disk for a smaller, 120G solid-state drive, which happened to be on sale. I agreed and also bought some new RAM.
I installed the drive and RAM, partitioned the disk (with HFS journaling), and restored my files with Time Machine. For that day and the next, everything worked perfectly.
The second day after the installation, the system hung while starting up. The Apple logo appeared, the gray spinner appeared, and it just spun. I tried resetting PRAM. I tried safe restart. I started up from the install disk and ran Disk Utility: no problems found. I repaired permissions. I took out the new RAM and put back the old. In some cases after trying these steps, the system booted fine — once. In others, it would not boot the first time, but would boot on the second or third attempt. I reinstalled OS X and updated software. The problem persisted. I installed some freeware to enable trimming the new disk. No better.
I have booted many times in verbose mode. During the unsuccessful boots, there is usually a message "Bug: launchctl.c: 3557 (23930):6 ioctl(S6, SIO CAIFADOR_IN6, &ifra6) ! = -1". The next line is the command "fsck_hfs", and the machine hangs. Eventually it sometimes spits out "launchctl: please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisory.plist". If I let it go for a long time, I sometimes come back to find a long string of I/O error messages, to the effect that media was expect to be there but wasn’t. I think every time I have gotten the launchctl message, it has booted successfully on the next try.
During the successful boots in verbose mode, everything happens so quickly that it is hard to say what is going on, but I don’t think it is running fsck_hfs. If it boots successfully and I give it a heavy I/O task, like doing a virus scan, everything works fine. If I run Disk Utility off the installation disk, it says the disk appears to be OK.
I started the machine in single user mode and ran fsck manually. It gave me reports similar to running Disk Utility, and told me the disk appeared to be OK. It then gave me the prompt for a new command. I typed "exit". It responded "logout". And hung.
One last thing: I just tried a couple of times to restart with the Apple Hardware test. Despite holding down the D key, the test failed to load, and after a long pause, the machine attempted a normal start-up.
    Any insights?

Thanks, sanjampet, I have an old copy of Spring Cleaning, and I'm letting it sift through my files right now.
I have done some investigation on other forums, and there are some suggestions that the problem is associated with  the make and model of drive that I installed. That is, this might not be an OS X issue so much as a hardware or firmware compatibility issue.
I bought the device on the recommendaiton of a salesman at a physical store, without consulting the manufacturer's webpages or online reviews. It turns out that many of those reviews are negative. It also turns out that although the manufacturer says that the device is suitable for Macs, the manufacturer does not yet offer a way to update to the most recent firmware unless the device is connected to a machine running Windows or Vista. And there are reports that some units out in the stores were shipped with outdated firmware, which might be the root cause of my problem. Or maybe not.
So here's the painful lesson: don't buy new hardware without first double-checking the specs, the support, and the reviews.
If anyone has a more hopeful insight into the problem, please let me know!

  • X-Server Crashes on Boot After Switch From Catalyst to Open Source ATI

Seems like there's a lot of similar stuff to this, but I've searched and googled and I haven't found anything that seems to apply directly to me. Please forgive me if there's a thread I've overlooked.
I recently wanted to give Catalyst a try, because I wanted to play a few old games in wine, and they didn't seem to work with the xf86 driver. It worked, the games played, but the instability wasn't worth it, so today I tried to go back. I followed the instructions for switching on the ATI wiki page, and now I have an xserver crash on boot, and somehow it's also wrecked my wifi.
I've tried everything in the "preparing for catalyst users" section on the wiki, and I've come up empty.
Obviously, as I can't get into X and there's no internet on that machine, I can't post my log file. If there's any info you people would find helpful, please ask.
    Thanks.

The only way to get real help is to find a way around that. Arrange to use someone else's computer for a short time and copy your log file to that one. Also, why not rename your log and then post it by switching back to Catalyst to get back to your last "working state"?
As for the wireless problem, what happens when you run iwconfig? Common commands are:
Listing networks -- iwlist wlan0 scan
Connecting to one -- iwconfig wlan0 essid NAME && dhcpcd wlan0

  • Failure to boot after new hard drive install

trying to resurrect old graphite 466mh firewire clamshell.
It was running tiger fine, had a problem charging it so sat in basement for a year. Turns out it was powercord, replaced, and now working again. Decided to replace the 10G hard drive, using the fixit site manual. Installed a Toshiba 80G drive, am now unable to boot from tiger cd's (not dvd) while holding down c-key. Any suggestions? By the way, have access to other firewire iBook running tiger but don't know how to boot from that. Any help much appreciated!

The reason for not being able to start
via 'C' on you new drive may be because it is
assigned (jumpered) incorrectly as the 'Slave' rather
    than the 'Master'.
Of course! it seems so obvious now
    you've said it.
    Actually it's almost
certainly best that this gets done sooner rather than
later or it is complicate any future trouble
    shooting
    kind regards
    mrtotes
OK gentlemen (thanks for responding). So I hook up the 2 iBooks, put the tiger cd in my wife's iBook and start them up. On the screen of the ibook I'm trying to resurrect my wife's desktop appears. I go into disk utility, it scans the systems and the only icons that appear are my wife's hard drive and the new (untitled) hard drive. No sign of the tiger installation cd. I can restore my wife's hard disk onto the untitled drive and end up with a working system. I know little about slaves and masters (I don't get out much)- how do I assign the new drive?
    thanks again,
    marc

  • Satellite L - system failure to boot and no HDD in BIOS

HI all, my laptop for some reason doesn't seem to think it has a hard drive installed, it says none in the BIOS for hard drive.
I made the mistake of not making recovery disks.
Anyone have any idea of anything I can do to get this working again?
    Thanks

    Hello
It sounds like that your HDD is faulty because the BIOS doesnt recognize it.
I think you must replace the HDD and reinstall Windows using Microsoft installation disk. All drivers and tools you can download on the Toshiba website:

  • Lenovo button and failure to boot after Windows 8.1 trying to update

Just read about the Lenovo or Novo button, seems like a cool thing, but I've not used it before.  Now I have a bootup problem due to a fatal error during update process when simply trying to reboot.  Nothing so far has allowed me to reboot, so I found out about this Lenovo button which might be helpful perhaps, alas nothing happens when I turn off the laptop and just press that button.  What is the reason for that? Was it not supposed to turn on the computer in some sort of safe mode?  This button is in lieue of some restoration media on a  USB flash drive, which I do not believe came with my laptop?

Can you please provide some details about your unit?
In general @ power off condition, pressing the NOVO button will present a menu onscreen with options to go to bios or restore your unit to factory condition, etc.

  • What is a neat way to delete a stale amavisd pid_file on first boot after panic or power failure?

Lion Mail Server component postfix/smtp 100% reproducible blocks inbound smtp mail delivery on first boot after a panic or power failure.
Error messages from mail.log are like:

The issue seems to be related to the amavis content filter due to the connection to port number 10024 and amavisd being configured on that port. Amavis.log:
    /usr/bin/amavisd[236]: (!)Net::Server: 2012/07/25-13:38:49 Pid_file already exists for running process (88)... aborting\n\n  at line 277 in file /System/Library/Perl/Extras/5.12/Net/Server.pm ... /usr/bin/amavisd[236]: Net::Server: 2012/07/25-13:38:49 Server closing! ...repeating roughly every 10 seconds...
The workaround is to reboot the machine, after the second boot the inbound smtp mail delivery is no longer stuck.
The issue seems to be related to http://serverfault.com/questions/138690/amavisd-net-server-pid-file-already-exis ts-after-system-crash-and-startup
How to permanently fix Apple Mail Server to accept smtp inbound messages on first boot, by removing the left over amavis pid_file from the previous unclean shutdown?

Use connection pooling. This will put the connection management in the hands of the webserver, not your code. Check out this post:

  • Computer will not boot after changing RAM.

    Hi All,
I have had some BSOD since I upgraded my system earlier in the year. So yesterday I decieded to try and test if the problem was one of the RAM blocks, by only using 1 X 4 MB ram at the time, and then after a BSOD I would change it to another RAM and test again.
Anyway, I started by taking all 4 X 4 MB ram's out, and then only insert 1 in Dimm 4(first found out later that I should have put it in Dimm 1). This worked fine, and computer rebooted, and I used it all yesterday. Then just before I went to bed I got another BSOD, so I powered the computer off, and then this morning before turning on the computer, I replaced the RAM with one of the other 4 MB ram, to continue the testing of my ram blocks.
But now my computer just wont boot anymore! I tried putting all RAM blocks back, putting 2 of them in, 1 at the time, and every combination I can think off, but it just wont start anymore.
When I power on the computer, it does start the fans, and the 2 blue light in the motherboard is on, but nothing comes on the computer screens, and no beeps or anything at all. It just stands there with all the fans running without booting bios.
I tried resetting the CMos, and removing the battery like shown in your guide on here, but it made no difference. I also tried to remove ALL ram blocks, just too see if it then would give me any beeps, but exact same thing happens. So I supect that the reason it does not start  booting, is because it thinks that there is no RAM in the motherboard ???
I really hope someone can help me out here, since I'm close to giving up, and I'm out of ideas. Everything worked fine last night, but after switching the RAM block, it just wont boot anymore no matter what ram I put in it.
    My system is:
    MB: Z68A-GD80 (B3)
    CPU: Intel Core-I7 2600K
    RAM: 2 X 4 MB Corsair Vengence 1600 Mhz & 2 X Kingston Hyper-X Genesis 1600 mhz
    GFX: HD 4870
    Monitors: 2 X Asus vW246H
    Please help! thanks in advance!

Quote from: Froggy Gremlin on 31-August-12, 18:25:21
This is almost always a recipe for failure and the most likely cause of the BSOD's. Recommend to pick one kit or the other to use, or better yet if 16GB is wanted, purchase a 4X4GB kit.
Check to see if the EPS/ATX 8-pin CPU power connection is secure. The PSU is not specified in your component list. It is possible it has gone bad. Test with only one RAM stick in the primary DIMM slot. I have the most trust in the Corsair brand.
Prior to the test, remove the PSU power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS.
    Hi, thanks for your reply.
I have been running with those different ram blocks for a long time, and the 2nd set I actually got after the BSOD's started to test the ram. The BSOD is very likely to be because of a bad Win 7 installation anyway, since I cloned my old HDD to a new SSD, and that is apperantly not a good way to go, so the lets just forget about the BSOD for now - that aint my main problem right now..
I did what you surgested above, eventhough I done it before. I now have just 1 corsair ram in DIMM 1.
Removed powercord, then I cleared the CMOS again by pressing the clear cmos botton at the back with a screwdriver for 10 secs. Then I removed the battery for 10+ secs as well.
Still does not seem to boot into bios. Fans running, and light on MB, so powersupply must be fine as well. Seems unlikely that it should just die overnight anyway.. Powersuppy is a Corsair HX 750.
CPU power conector is fine. I really haven't done anything except switching that RAM block this morning. Last night when I powered the computer down, everything worked fine.
To be sure that its not because my GFX card should have gone bad overnight, I tried with another GFX card, but still nothing comes on the screens when it should be booting up.
If the none of the RAM was working, or it does not detect any ram in the motherboard, shouldn't it atleast be giving some sort of error beeps ?? What is so frustrating is, that I get NO errors or sound or anything.. I just a black screen, and a computer with atleats all fans running..

  • Satellite A660 - Will not boot up and HDD boot fail

    Hi,
    firstly thanks for your time.
    Model: Satellite A660 (PSAW3A-07U00R)
The problem started yesterday, the computer was going slow as an application closed, so I held the off button untill the pc turned off. When I restarded the laptop it went to a screen saying: Start windows normally or repair Windows (recomended)
When started normally it just hangs at a blank screen, the repair Windows recommends a system restore to earlier point which didnt work. As it just hangs again. I tried pressing F8 and starting in safe mode but again it just hangs. Then after a few times trying safe mode and another system restore the computer then hangs when I press F8. After this the computer goes past the Toshiba logo screen with F2 and F12 options (which both still work), and then it comes up boot failed then goes blank and comes with boot failed bootfailed with some numbers and letters, then it goes to a small box titled boot menu with 4 options. These are
    HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX
    CD/DVD MAT****ABD-CMB UJ141ES
    FDD
    LAN
If I press ESC it goes through the bootfailed loop and ends up at same screen, if I press enter on "HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX" then it quickly comes back to screen and at the bottom it says [HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX] is failed.
I dont understand why it got worse over time. Can anyone think of why this has happend and more importantly how can I get my pc working again? Note: holding 0 then starting does nothing for me atm
    regards, Matthew

All you people looking here on this dead thread.....
Toshiba A660 laptops are renowned for having hard drive fails and boot up problems after grinding to a halt.
My solution (after losing 3 hard drives [and a terabyte of family treasured times]) is the following.
Use MALWAREBYTES (free download and use for 28 days)
Scan and fix. Mine found over 300 trojans that 2013 Norton 360 could not find.
    Re-boot into safe mode.
    SCAN again.
Re-boot and empty the malwarebytes repair files it retains...
Run Norton/McAfee (whichever you have) and you should still have no issues.
    Make a back-up repair disc. Ooooops......no you cant...........at least my laptop can`t.
    I don`t know why.....
Tell me tosh..... why does windows x64 refuse to allow me to make a system boot disc (even though the laptop is all driver updated and Windows updated)?
Uninstall MalwareBytes when Norton/McAfee tells you there will be a conflict between the two programs.
It tells you to re-boot after uninstalling it.
Then when it re-boots you get a black screen. You cannot even get to bios. You think ytour laptop is turned into a brick frisbee. You pull out the battery in frustration after five minutes.
You replace and re-boot....but again you get no bios or boot up.... you think its destroyed the Bios or graphics somehow....youo can hear the hard-drive but you have no clue whats going on..
Around this time you shake the laptop in frustration.....
    Calm down.
Switch on and leave FIFTEEN MINUTES....Ten of which will be a Black nothing screen with maybe a single white underscore line in the top left corner.LEAVE IT ALONE.
Make a sunday dinner for ten people....When you go back to the computer it will be up and running.
When you re-boot again, it will be dead black for five minutes...then boots up... you still think it has a problem... LEAVE IT.
When you reboot again it should work perfect (assuming you have not been overheating it by using it on a cushion on your lap and overheating the insides [use a laptop fan tray]) if you have not shaken your hard drive or caused scrambled damage by pulling the power fifty times like some people do.
I have lost three hard drives and thousands of Gigabytes of treasured family memories discovering the secret the hard way.
    Enjoy.
Buy a different brand next time.
ALL Windows system files should be on a SWITCHED (to update) version of Windows.
Spinning drives should be for Data only.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.
