Failure to Consolidate

Here's the feedback I've sent to Apple:
"1. I just switched back from referenced to managed images. Of about 5,000 images, 45 failed to Consolidate. Ap reported it couldn't consolidate images not found. The images are in exactly the same folder structure as all the others, and in the same individual folders as others that worked just fine. Show in Finder finds them. Manage Referenced Images also reports, of some of these 45, that it can't reconnect them. Even if it can (or says it has done so), Consolidate still reports the image as offline or not found.
2. This may be a variation on the same problem I was having when my images were referenced. I duplicated my folder-tree of images from my laptop (I've been traveling) to my desktop, and copied the Ap library as well. Most images responded to Manage Referenced Images. Some -- psd files made on the laptop originally with Open in External Editor -- did not. That's one reason I gave up and went back to managed images. Now that doesn't work.
I would *very* much appreciate advice on how to get the rest of my library back in good order."
Has anybody else run into this problem? As I said, I'd appreciate a solution, even better if accompanied by an explanation -- the problem images (1% of the total) seem completely random.

Well, I solved my problem, by hand. I imported the unConsolidated images again. Then I lifted all the metadata from the supposedly unfindable Referenced image (if the images are "unfindable" how in the world could Aperture lift all adjustments etc from them???) and stamp the corresponding, re-imported, Managed image. That had to be done individually for each image of course. Then delete all the referenced images.
Am I missing something? Has this happened to other people with Consolidate? I don't want to generalize too much and I'm sure I could have made some mistake I can't think of -- but this experience says to me that while Aperture has nice features, "robust" is not a word I'd use for this software. That's very worrisome, especially now that I've given Aperture control over my all my images and their backup by shifting from Referenced to Managed images.

  • Cannot 'Consolidate Library" : Copying music failed , the file name was too

    Hi,
I am trying to move all the music library to my new computer ( this is my 3rd time of changing my PC). I tried to consolidate the library... but the message was
Copying music failed , the file name was invalid or too long"
I already moved the Itunes to my new pc, but my new Itunes cannot "Relocating my file"
    Please help me

To find out which file it was, look at where you were
copying them too and see which was the last file
copied - and then go back to your source, and go to
the next one - it should be that one.
I just wanted to add that I had the same issue (failure to finish copying and "invalid or too long" error msg) and at first didn't see how looking for the last file copied would work since iTunes is copying into folders.
    Duh.
Reverse sort by date modified (newest folder at the top of the list) then drill down to the folder containing the files being copied. Voila. There was the (missing) culprit, and I knew which file to rename in the source folder.

  • Consolidate Library Error

    Hi,
I'm looking to migrate my iTunes library to another hard disk on my laptop.  I have followed steps on Apple's website where I reset the library location to the new drive and am now using the consolidate library function.
I'll highlight 20GB of files and select consolidate library however it trucks along for a while until it seemingly finds a file it doesn't like and iTunes hangs for 20 minutes then gives me an error message "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.".  While it's hung the copying progress bar shows the file it was supposed to be copying so I can identify the problematic song and skip that artist however I then find it hits same issue with another file along the way.
I've got about 170GB of media so it's not really practical to go through this process of bypassing files it doesn't like so I wondered if anyone has any idea why these files are causing problems for iTunes?
I have run chkdsk on both the source and destination drives and no errors came back and I don't think it's an issue with the drives as I copied a load of other stuff to the new drive without issue.  The source drive is my Windows drive and I don't see any errors there.
So, I have my original library files on C: and some copied files on D:, which is now set as the library location.  Can I potentially have my 'old' library as is on C: and have any new files running from D: concurrently so I've got it in two locations simulataneously?  This way I can 'consolidate' what iTunes will let me copy to D: and leave anything else on C: and have any new files imported into D:, would this work?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I assume you ran chkdsk with the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" option? One failure would be annoying to transfer would be annoying. Repeated failures suggest there may be an underlying problem with one of the disks. I'd be keen to get another drive and start backing up to it.
iTunes will work OK with the files in the split locations, but you have to manually check what can be safely deleted from drive C. Normally I'd recommend that you move the entire iTunes folder as a unit and then hold down shift as you launch iTunes to choose the library in the new location. Given that you are part way through consolidating this isn't so simple now, but see my post make a split library portable for more information.

  • Duplicate files created after library consolidate library

I have been trying to clean up everything. I have several iTunes libraries. The one I have selected in preferences is on an external HD, it was up and running. I went to library>consolidate library. When I went to look at the actual files in my selected ext. HD iTunes folder, nearly EVER song (several 1000's) had a duplicate, tune.mp3 and now tune 1.mp3. ***??? Where did they come from? Did iTunes gather all of the files up from other itunes folders & copy them???
How do I get rid of the duplicates?
    What a mess...
They don't show in the iTunes window. Just in the file folder.

    Hi,
Then you may need to monitor the behavior to see if you can find out the cause.
First you can enable Audit on that folder to get the account who create the /1 file. You need to set Audit in 2 settings:
    1. Configure "audit object access" in AD Group Policy or on the server's local GPO. This setting is located under Computer Configuration-->Windows Settings-->Security Settings-->Local Policies-->Audit Policies. Enable success/failure auditing
    for "Audit object access."
    2. Configure an audit entry on the specific folder(s) that you wish to audit. Right-click on the folder-->Properties-->Advanced. From the Auditing tab, click Add, then enter the users/groups whom you wish to audit and what actions you wish to audit
    - auditing Full Control will create an audit entry every time anyone opens/changes/closes/deletes a file, or you can just audit for Delete operations.
Also you can try Process Monitor to see if you can capture the exact process when the file is created. However as the issue occurs randomly it may take your time to get an accurate trace.

  • "Unable to Consolidate Library, not enough disk space on C:\"

This is a very annoying bug and i'm certain it is a software bug and nothing that I can fix on my end without an iTunes update. The goods news, is that it should be very easy to change (I say this as a programmer myself.)
The problem: I do not keep all my mp3's on my internal hard drive. This would be impossible since I have a 60gb ipod and my laptop only has a 60gb drive to begin with -- i'd never be able to hold my library on my laptop without using an external for storage. So in iTunes, I have my preferences setup to store music files on this external drive. It is working great. The actual database file is still stored on C:\ (internal) and this is fine since it is rather small. However, when I choose consolidate library, iTunes thinks for a few minutes and then claims that it is unable to perform the action because there is not enough disk space available on C:\. This is silly for several reasons: 1) iTunes should not be coded such that it copies all files to C:\temp (or wherever it does its temp work for that matter) before copying the files to thier final destination. This is just one extra disk read/write that is unneeded. 2) If, for whatever reason, using the internal drive as a temporary buffer is required, then just copy one song at a time. As long as I have enough free space to copy the largest song that needs to be moved, consilidation should be possible. There is no reason to copy all 60gb of music to the temp, then copy all 60gb to my external drive. Instead, it is much smarter to copy one song at a time (and deleting the copy in the temp folder after you are done with it.) 3) An example: My internal drive has 10gb of free space, my external has 55gb of music and 45gb of free space. My library contains 5gb of music that is located on my internal drive. Even if iTunes were to copy all 5gb to the temp space on c:\ before the final copy operation, this should be able to consolidate without a problem. However, it doesn't. For some reason, iTunes thinks that it has to copy all 60gb of music (including 55gb of music that is not going to move anywhere.)
Recently I started storing all my music on a samba server. Simply changed the itunes preferences once again to point to //ipaddress/sharename and it works great. I can even sync my ipod on my laptop with the songs stored on my samba server without any trouble. However, consilidate library still fails for the same reason.

Assuming there are enough space available on the filestore folder? Did you check system log during failure? If possible enable CMS trace, that may help you for further investaigation.

  • How do I consolidate multiple Itunes folders on one computer?

I had a mishap with my external hard drive (I didn't know how to use it properly..yup USER ERROR!) so I have three different Itunes folders intertwined in my music folders with different previous Itunes libraries.  I made a backup of the entire music mess on a flash drive, have a new computer and finally an ipod to put my music on...
Can someone give me some detailed steps to be able to consolidate all of my many Itunes libraries and let me know how I can access the music in my previous Itunes libraries?  I want to make sure that I still have the rights to the music that I purchased in the past.  I had some music in the Itunes cloud which is great but not nearly all of it...DRATS!
I found some steps to consolidate music from different computers onto one but I'm not sure that the same steps apply to my situation.  Here are the links that I was looking at in eHow:  http://www.ehow.com/how_5704389_consolidate-multiple-itunes-libraries.html  and  http://www.ehow.com/how_8149083_can-itunes-libraries-two-computers.html.
    Thanks so much in advance!

I have 3 iTunes accounts which I had set up each time I got a new device not realising I should use the same one. Is there a way to consolidate the accounts without losing tunes etc as at the moment my iPad, new iPhone and iPod are all getting different downloads : (

  • I have three versions of itunes backed up between 2 different external hard drives and a macbook pro. I recently got a new macbook pro and want to consolidate all music into one library on my new computer. How can I do this?

Because each library is named "iTunes Music" anytime I go to bring one library on to the same external harddrive as another it asks me if I want to REPLACE one library with the other. I don't want to do this because each file has different variations of music files. Ideally, I'd like all three "iTunes Music" music files to live on the same computer or at least the same external harddrive. Thanks for the help!

    Hello cmc313,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iTunes 10 for Mac: Consolidate your iTunes library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph990
You can consolidate all the files in your library in the iTunes folder so that, for example, it’s easier to move your library to a new computer.

  • Multiple iMac LogicBoard failures

So 3 years ago I took the plunged and converted the house to Macs. Nice experience generally. Yet in the last 2 months I have had two logicboard failures on two iMacs. The cost to fix these was quoted at over $1,000 each computer. Obviously given the age of the machines, this is not a viable fix.
I am now considering moving back to PC's (my 3 year old Mac laptop is also playing up).
After logicboard failure #1, I reluctantly forked out $2K for a new machine. I racked this up as a "bad" and unusual unit. #2 comes along and fails and it makes me mad. Worse, no sympathy from the guys in the Apple Store. I ask "Surely for a machine of this age, noone would possibly pay for a $1K logicboard? Isn't this priced to basically make you buy a new machine?" All I got back was smiles (they really didn't care it seems).
    Question:
    - Are Mac's prone to hardware failures?
    - If they do get hardware failures are you basically just in trouble given the absurd component prices to fix ($700 for the logicboard part alone)? How can Apple justify $700 for a logicboard part?
    - Does Apple offer any discounts to people who have had these multiple bad experiences? (I'm partly kidding here, but also hoping)
My Mac laptop is playing up so I may be two Mac's down. I am considering going back to the darkside now and buying PC's again.
    Anyone got any comments?
    Thanks

That a UPS unit would have prevented your logic board failures. Properly designed power supplies do not need a UPS unit in this country. In some third world countries where the power is unreliable on a daily basis with large power swings, they are a must have.
In my opinion, the G5 iMac's were a poor design with inadequate heat dissipation, weak power supplies and logic boards. Most of them ran for years, but an inordinate number of them had multiple failures. The new aluminum models are a much better design with most of the high heat components located at the top of the machine.
I had no hardware problems with my eight year old Dell...but I'm still sticking with Apple because of their superior software performance.
Good luck with what ever you decide...virg

  • Multiple Hard Drive Failures on my Macbook Pro - Entourage reminders?

Over the past 2 months I've had three hard drives fail on three different macbook pro computers.
I've retraced my steps, searched many forums, and spoken with multiple Mac Geniuses but still can't figure out what's happening. The IT guy at work is about to kill me and I really want to figure out what's going wrong so I can fix it (or change my current behaviors).
Computer #1 - Out of the box, 2-3 weeks old. I took the computer home to do some work over the weekend. I didn't turn the it off before transporting it, but I did wait for it to go to sleep completely (I've since read that it takes a few moments while things in RAM switch over to the Hard Drive to save incase of power failure). I worked on it a bit at home, mostly just internet searches and a few word documents. When I returned to work my computer was running slowly and suddenly all of the programs locked. Since I've had this problem before with my personal computer (a G4 Powerbook), I tried the force quit options to no avail so I just held down the power key to power off. When I rebooted I got the dreaded "no" symbol.
Computer 2: IT gave me a used macbook pro that they repurposed for me. I made sure to shut down before transporting this computer. A few days later, before I even got to transfer all of my files, the computer started running slowly, programs locked. I eventually got the computer to shut itself down (as IT didn't want me to do a forced reboot) but upon restarting I got an even more dreaded screen, the folder with a question mark in it.
Computer 3: It was a fairly new computer, though a bit more ram, and probably only a few months old (used by a freelancer). It worked great. I took it home several times, transfered all of my files. Set up everything perfectly. Three weeks in, after working at my desk for about 4 hours, everything began to slow down. I called IT immediately and remotely sent a force shut down message. Nothing happened for about 15 minutes so I left for a meeting. I came back a few hours later and my computer was off. When it restarted, nothing appeared. There wasn't a "no" symbol or folder with a question mark in it, just a blank screen.
I've read and thought about all of the options.
    - Large Magnet somewhere - It would have affected my personal computer (if at home) or my colleagues (if at work) or everyone else in nyc (while on the subway)
    - Too hot - Possible I suppose, but how does running iTunes, powerpoint, and entourage do this?
    - Downloaded something/Virus - We don't have administrative privileges. I can only update some software and send/receive folders. Plus, can any single file cause this much damage?
    - Moved before asleep - This might have happened on the first computer, but I doubt it could happen to three. I always shut it down now before transporting, and I was sitting at my desk for hours before I had any trouble last time.
The one common factor that I haven't mentioned.
We use Entourage as a mail client here.
Each time the computer froze, the first things to freeze were the Entourage calendar reminders. Entourage seems to run strangely with the airport, but not with our LAN. When my computer froze last time, I had the aiport on but was working off the LAN. Could Entourage cause this much trouble? Has anyone else had trouble with entourage calendar reminders or failing hard drives?
Oh, and it also always happens on a Monday. I've taken the computers home multiple times though, so I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing during the transport or not, but the computer is always off now when I move it. I also cary my personal computer with me often, same routes and bags, so I'm not sure why it's not affected.
    Thanks

    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • After using "consolidate library" to move my media to a NAS the items counts do not match.  How do I find what is different the easiest way??

I wanted to move my itunes media on my imac to a NAS drive.  I used the advance preferences to change the folder to the folder on the NAS.  I then went to the "organize library" setting to consolidate.
When I compare the two folders, the music folders are different (807 items in the old to 798 items in the new), mobile applications are different (143 in the old to 153 in the new), Movies are different (321 items in the old, 324 in the new).
I think I already had the entire folder organized the way itunes wanted it.  I'm not sure why the count would increase or to easily make sure I'm not missing any info.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Actually, a little off on the situation as I originally described.
Compared the old items counts to the new item counts:
    1. The music folder increased in item counts.
    2.  Books is identical.
    3.  Mobile apps decreased by 10 on the new.
    4.  Movies decreased by 3.
