Failure to export to PDF

I have an InDesign file that I exported an earlier version of to a PDF with no problem, but now it fails to export.  I've installed Adobe updates but it hasn't helped.

See Adobe Community: File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other
The techniques are just as valid if the file doesn't crash but fails to export...

  • Sporadic failure to export to .PDF in PM7

    This issue has flumoxed me from time to time. Every now and again a newly created PM7 document will fail to export to .PDF nor print to a PostScript driver. These documents are nothing too complicated. Sometimes I can trace it to a font error, other times I cannot ascertain where it comes from. I have checked against other known documents that both export to .PDF and print to PostScript just fine during the same use session. The most recent issue comes in a simple document that has one .JPG placed in it and a 54 point headline. I have tried changing fonts, removing the .JPG and re-typing text blocks all to no avail.
    Any suggestions on what causes the failure?
    Before it is suggested I migrate to InDesign, we already use it. However we have a huge legacy of PM7 documents that are easier to rework staying in PM7.
    Thank for any help.

    thanks for the replies.
    It really helps me a lot solve the issue.
    Although the actual issue with the printing company my client currently using.
    "If your logo is square or rectangular, you can choose to fit the artboard to the logo (the art) and then save out the PDF. If it is not a square or a rectangle, the PDF will always show "white" around the logo."
    I didnt able to find out any option under edit/view menu. there are "fit to window" and another think cant remember...but no fit to art work...
    any way my problem is solved now.
    thanks guys.

  • Is anyone experiencing Export from PDF to Word failure?

    Is anyone experiencing Acrobat.com Export from PDF to Word failure?   I have successfully used this Cloud Service for several months, but today, I could not get it to work from my computer from either of two printer/scanners.  If so, have you a solution to the problem?  I would appreciate any help.

    Hi ConstructionSRS,
    No, the service is working fine and am able to convert the pdf to word.
    What error do you get when you try to convert the pdf to word?

  • Using the Export to PDF online service, I get "Conversion Failure" error message; why?

    Using the Export to PDF online service, I get "Conversion Failure" error message; why?
    The documen t was originally created with Word (*.doc) then printed to PDF format; now I need to convert back to Work, but I get the "Conversion Failure" error message, both on conversion back to *.Doc format and attempt to convert to *.docx format.

    Hi lfordlaw,
    How large is the PDF that you're trying to convert? How did you generate the PDF from Word (did you use Acrobat, or Word's built-in PDF generator)? What version of Word are you using?
    The answers to those questions should help us get to the bottom of things.
    In the meantime, please try the following:
    Clear the browser cache and log back in to https://cloud.acrobat.com.
    Try a different web browser (see System Requirements | Adobe Acrobat Pro and Online Services for a list of supported browsers).
    Try to convert a different file (if you can convert another file without error, the one you're receiving the error on may be damaged).
    I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • InDesign CS5 PDF - Failure to Export Vector Elements

    Recently, we have had two separate incidents where the creation of an InDesign CS5 PDF failed to export certain vector art elements. The elements are not shared between jobs and the files were physically created in different locations (entirely different servers) within our organization. The elements are pdf and eps and appropriately linked. On the PDF, we're not even getting a low-res version of the artwork. When looking at the PDF in NEO, the containing box of the graphic is not present. One the most frustrating aspects of this is we haven't been able to repeat error in order to fix the error. The next time (or 50 times) the document is exported, the vector art is fine.
    Has anyone else had a similar issue?

    @rickphot
    I've had this same problem just today. I have a 64 page INDD that when exported to PDF (print) from CS5 (with no elements on my page set to "non printing elements"), only some of my vector shapes get exported. They are all merely 0.25pt Black Lines used to direct a reader from a comment to a matching illustration, and some pages exported them just fine, and some other pages will not work. I've tried moving them to a new layer, cutting and pasting in place, copying and pasting in place, changing the transparency modes, etc...nothing works...EXCEPT to just redraw the lines.
    @Bob Levine
    Do you work for Adobe? Can you offer any advice to this problem yet?
    Thanks all. Glad I'm not the ONLY one going crazy with a bizzare problem like this one.

  • Error when exporting to pdf using Infoview.

    Hi,
    If I preview one of our reports (built in CRXI) in the CMC for CR server and then attempt to export the output to a PDF after waiting for a few mins I get the error:
    Error
    Your request could not be completed because a failure occurred while the report was being processed. Please contact your system administrator.
    The report has 6 supreports each that take 2 parameters. Previously we have had problems with this report when trying to change the database connections for the subreports (we were getting a 'Missing prompting units' error until we started making the database connection change in CRXI, running from CRXI not the CMC and then saving the file to the repository once it had run successfully with the new connection settings).
    All our other reports preview fine, they do not generally use sub-reports or multiple parameters though.
    Thanks for your help.

    There's so many variables for each Enterprise action, even with an effort to improve these over the years, the Enterprise error messages are usually so vague you have to trace to really identify the issue.
    Exporting directly from Crystal Reports is a good start.
    Sometimes it's just a matter of the report has streamed the 1st/beginning pages to you, but it is still processing in the background when the export to pdf is executed. Since the report is not complete, it fails. Try scheduling it directly to pdf to eliminate this possibility.
    Else you will have to trace the Page Server or RAS to get more info.

  • Export to PDF Issue (SSRS 2012 with Integration SharePoint 2013)

    Things Also Done
    1) I also tried exporting the report through excel and found no issues (it exports successfully and no issue when i open the file). The size of the exported excel (.xlsx) is 4.28MB. The timerendering value for export to excel is approx. 77 seconds.
    2) I also tried creating email subscription (PDF as the rendering format) for that report and it works successfully. The size of the attached PDF from the email is approx. 1.43 MB. I can also open that PDF file with no issue. And the size of the email with
    the attached PDF file is approx. 1.48 MB.
    That all said, we would like to seek for your assistance to determine what is causing the failure of exporting the report to PDF issue directly from the reporting site. (Let me remind you that the email subscription for the same report with attached
    PDF works with no issue)

    Hi roel2000,
    According to your description, you get error when exporting the report into PDF. It works properly when exporting in excel or PDF format within E-mail subscription. Right?
    In Reporting Services, the Excel and MHTML(e-mail subscription) render extensions are soft page break renderers. The PDF render extension is hard page break renderer. It has different render behavior between these two kind of renders. This might cause the
    error. Since we are not clear about your report structure, please refer to rules in the link below and do the troubleshooting.

    If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • File will not export to PDF

    I am creating an InDesign book composed of multiple placed PDF files. Whenever I go to export this book as a new print PDF, I keep receiving an error message that says "1 problem (1 failure) was found with a background task: Failed to export the PDF file."  I have narrowed it down to one particular PDF within the book that seems to be causing the problem. However, I don't really know enough about PDF files to determine what the problem actually is. Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here or have any other things for me to look into to provide further information? Thanks!

    Never mind! I'm not sure what the actual problem was, but after printing the file that was having the issue and re-scanning it as a new file, everything worked out.

  • Exporting a pdf from a pc trial version of InDesign

    I cannot get my PC trial version of InDesign CS6 to export a pdf for proofing. Is this capability included in the trial version?

    I just joined the cloud so my version is now authorized and I'm having the same problem.
    I've used a mac for decades and exporting as I do in CS4
    I'm going file >export >  giving my file name (it added the .pdf as usual) >choosing where it will go then pressing enter.
    a box pops up and says "Background tasks:" 1 problem (1 failure) was associated with this task: failure to export.
    I also tried exporting to the INDL format, and printing from my mac CS4 and it fails to print there as well.

  • Update to CC 2014, can no longer export to PDF

    Greetings,
    My recent update of InDesign to the CC 2014 version leaves me unable to export ID files to PDF.  I get the message:  "1 Problem (1 failure) was found with a background task:  export (filename).pdf (1).  This happens regardless of file: existing document, new document, etc.  If I back-save the document and open it in the previous version of CC, there are no problems.
    This is incredibly frustrating...any thoughts??

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for the response.

  • Problem When Multiple Users Export To PDF Simultaneously

    I am hoping someone out there can help.  We have had no luck at all with Crystal Reports / SAP support for this issue.
    We have a client/server aplication and have written a C# program to load a crystal report on the server, export it to PDF and then we send the PDF to the client. We are using Crystal Reports 2008 and have applied SP4.
    The scenario is as follows:
    Two users log into our application from different PC's.
    User 1 prints a report with no issue.
    User 2 prints a report 5 seconds later with no issue.
    If User 1 prints a report and while that report is being exported to PDF, User 2 prints a report, the first will be successful and the second will fail.  If User 2 reprints the report after receiving a failure, the report prints successfully the second time (using the same temp report folders as the previous attempt). We have done a lot of tracing and have narrowed the problem down to the point in out C# program when the cryRpt.Export() routine is called.  It seems to be what is failing and doesn't seem to be able to run 2 exports simultaneously.
    All exporting to PDF occurs on the application server and the processes run as "Administrator" so permissions should certainly not be a problem.  Each user is printing a different physical .rpt file and the data for each report is in a different physical directory.
    Has anyone come across this before or have any suggestions?

    We thought the same thing as you suggest and have already made that change without sucess.  Below is what the code looks like for our export routine.  Perhaps you can spot something we have not.  As mentioned before the export appears to be faulting at the statement "cryRpt.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, pdfname);" in the below code.
    The code is as follows:
            public void exportReport(string xmldir, string crname, string pdfname, string termid, bool debug)
                try
                    if (debug)
                        dt = DateTime.Now;
                        tw.WriteLine(dt.ToString() + "-Start exportReport: " + crname);
                    ReportDocument cryRpt;
                    cryRpt = new ReportDocument();
                    cryRpt.Load(crname, OpenReportMethod.OpenReportByTempCopy);
                    if (debug)
                        tw.WriteLine("Done loading report: " + crname);
                    int tmpct = 0;
                    int tmpint = crname.IndexOf("
    ", tmpct);
                    while (tmpint != -1)
                        tmpct = tmpint;
                        tmpint = crname.IndexOf("
    ", tmpct + 1);
                    string ODBCReportFileName = crname.Substring(tmpct + 1, crname.Length - tmpct - 5);
                    if (debug)

                    //Setup the connection information structure to log on to the data source for the report.
                    // If using ODBC, this should be the DSN. If using OLEDB, etc, this should be the physical server name
                    crConnectionInfo.ServerName = "SH" + ODBCReportFileName;
                    if (debug)
                        tw.WriteLine("Resetting connection to: " + crConnectionInfo.ServerName);
                    crConnectionInfo.DatabaseName = "";

  • InDesign CS5.5 Fails to export to PDF

    I can't get InDesign (Mac running OS X Lion 10.7.4 ) to export to PDF. It gives me "Failed to Export to PDF" with every document I've tried. I've created new documents to test, and still gives error. I've installed the newest patch (Adobe InDesign CS5.5 7.5.3 update for Macintosh - All Languages) but still am having the same problems.
    Any ideas? I've searched the internet and can't find any solutions that offer any hope. Thoughts?

    The last time we saw this, it turned out to be a font problem, but it could be a lot of things. Take a look at this other thread about failure in CS5.5:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4575362#4575362
    Also, check to see if it works in a new user account, or if it works in the foreground (add the file to a Book, then export from the Book).

  • Is it possible to export to PDF without a Return character at the end of every line?

    I am the author of a book whose first edition has been typeset and extensively amended in InDesign.  I now need to rewrite the first edition to produce a second edition.
    When I copy-and-paste from the PDF with which the publisher has supplied me into MS Word, I get a Return character at the end of every line, which means that text doesn’t automatically wrap and sentences are fragmented so that I get spurious grammar errors.
    I know that not all PDF files have a Return at the end of every line.  Is it possible to restrict Returns to the end of paragraphs when exporting from InDesign to PDF?  If so, what should the publisher be asking the typesetter to do?

    Thanks for your lightning-swift and helpful replies, Mike & Ellis.
    I don't have InDesign myself, so I know hardly anything about how it's used.  I'm just trying to research what an internationally-known publisher should already know how to do, but apparently doesn't!
    Following your suggestion, Mike, I have downloaded the trial version of Acrobat and exported the PDF to a Word file.  This has been moderately successful as there are far fewer spurious Return characters, just a few that I suspect may be hangovers from the typesetter having introduced soft returns in ID.
    As you've suggested Peter and Ellis, I'll suggest that the publisher asks the typesettter to export from ID to RTF and Text to see if that's even better.
