Failure to install Oracle 9i on RH 9

I have a problem installing Oracle 9i R2 on RedHat 9 I followed the instructions of several sites and still I am not able to install it.
The problem is when I execute the runInstaller script from the CD ... it tells me that it cannot execute the runInstaller binary file. This file is in <cd mount directory>/install/linux/ This binary file is called from the first runInstaller.
I have not clue what is wrong ... I am logged on as Oracle, the directories have 755 permission and my whole environment is set ($ORACLE_HOME, etc)
I would appreciate any suggestions and/or answers. I am stuck. THANKS!!!

Hi Edgar,
You do not mention what version of 9i you're installing.
If your version is 9.2.0.3 or higher, then, the <cd mount directory>/install/linux/runInstaller is probably a 64-bit executable. And RH9 is 32-bit.
I have personally installed 9.2.0.1.0 on RH 9 multiple times. And failed with 9.2.0.3 :-(.
You can confirm my statement by quickly executing the command "file <cd mount directory>/install/linux/runInstaller". If you get "64-bit" somewhere in the output, then I'd say you're out of luck.
Regards
Anand

This is the same problem that we have encountered installing 8.1.7 clients on AIX 4.3.3 and 5.2. However I did successfully install it on one AIX 4.3.3 machine. Comparing the oracle logs there are no differences in the successful and unsuccessful installs until the point netasst hangs. All the machines are definitely set to run the 32 bit kernel.

• HELP! Can not install Oracle 8.1.5 w/ RedHat 6.1!

I can not get Oracle 8.1.5 to install onto Linux RedHat 6.1. The
Oracle installation script generates several errors. I have
tried several attempts, using different options, but they all
generate errors.
Please help. The Oracle Installation scripts appear to be very
buggy... or perhaps they are incompatible with the standard
RedHat 6.1 release. Either way, it is very frustrating.
I have documented one of my (failed) installation attempts below.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
I am installing Oracle onto a Dell Latitude CPi PC w/ 128MB RAM,
a 366MHz Pentium II, and RedHat 6.1 (using the standard Linux
2.2.12-2 kernel). RedHat was installed using the standard "Gnome
Workstation" configuration.
The Oralce CD is labeled:
"Oralce 8i Enterprise Edition
Release 8.1.5
for Linux
(c) Oracle Corporation 1999"
I got this CD about one week ago at Oracle OpenWorld '99 in Los
Angeles... it should be their "latest & greatest" version so far.
1. Pre-Installation and ./runInstall
I created an "oracle" Unix account w/ groups "oinstall" (the
primary group) and "dba" (a secondary group).
I created directories /u01 through /u04, belonging to oracle.
I setup .cshrc and sourced it, containing:
umask 022
setenv DISPLAY `hostname`:0
xhost +
setenv ORACLE_BASE /u01/app/oracle
setenv ORACLE_HOME ${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.5
setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest
setenv PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib
setenv NLS_LANG US7ASCII
I downloaded jre116_v5 and installed to /usr/local/jre.
Finally, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
cd /mnt/cdrom
./runInstall
Problem: I got the error (from ./runInstall):
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre.
Please wait...
Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
: Bad address
Workaround: Executed the following commands instead:
cd /mnt/cdrom/install/linux
./runIns.sh
3. runIns.sh and root.sh
I selected the following options (from ./runIns.sh):
Source: /mnt/cdrom/stage/products.jar
Destination: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.5.0.0
Typical (585MB)
Installable Components: Oralce Intelligent Agent 8.1.5.0.0
Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
SID: cprtest
Directory for Database Files: /u02
Then (when instructed by ./runIns.sh), I attempted to execute
(from the
"root" Unix account):
cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
./root.sh
Problem: I got the error:
"bash: ./root.sh: Permission denied"
The execute bit was not set.
Workaround: I executed:
chmod a+x root.sh
./root.sh
5. Configuration Tools
The Oracle Installer (./runIns.sh) attempted to execute:
A. Net8 Configuration Agent
B. Oracle Database Configuration Agent
Problem: The "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" failed with
the following error message:
"One or more tools have failed. It is recommended but not
required that these tools succeed for this installation.
You can now select these tools, read its details to examine
why they have failed, fix those problems, and retry them.
Or, you can click "Next" to continue."
When I selected the "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" for
more info, I got the following additional details (as the cause
of the error):
"A required command line argument is missing."
The log file
"/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log" recorded:
"Command which is being spawned is /usr/local/jre/bin/jre

Workaround: There is obviously nothing I can do to fix this
problem. It appears to be an internal bug in ./runIns.sh.
Therefore, I selected "Next" and executed "dbassist" directly.
6. dbassist
I executed:
dbassist
Problem: I got the following error:
"JNLS Execution:oracle.ntpg.jnls.JNLSException
Unable to find any National Character Sets. Please
check your Oracle installation."
Workaround: Press "OK" and ignore the error.
7. dbassist (cont.)
I selected the following options:
Create database
Typical
Copy existing database files from the CD
Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
SID: cprtest
Problem: I got the following error:
"CD-ROM drive not detected on this system.
Database not created."
(Note: I've been running the installation scripts from the
CDROM drive this entire time. "df" shows the CDROM drive
mounted on /mnt/cdrom. "ls /mnt/cdrom" works too.)
Workaround: Abort (which generated the additional error: "Unable
to create database. DBCA-00003: No CD-ROM drive detected.") and
run dbassist again, this time using different parameters.
8. dbassist, again
I executed "dbassist" again and selected the following options:
Create database
Typical
Create new database files
Hybrid
Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and iM demos

Problem: I got the following error:
"ORA-01012: not logged on"
Workaround: Try, try again.
9. dbassist, one last time
Executed "dbassist" once more and selected the following options:

Typical
Create new database files
Hybrid
Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and interMedia
demos
Global Database Name: cprtest3.parkrussell.com
SID: cprtest3
Output creation script
Then, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/install
setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest3
./sqlcprtest3.sh
Problem: I got the following output:

Workaround: Beats me.
10. sqlplus
I attempted to execute sqlplus, but got the following error
message:
"/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus: Permission denied."
The execute bit was not set.
Workaround: I executed:

I gave up for now... there were just too many things wrong with
this installation, starting with the very first command I was
supposed to execute (./runInstaller).
I can't fathom why Oracle's installation script has so many bugs.
Am I just doing something terribly wrong?
Please help.

I'm using enlightenment version 0.15.5-41, which is more recent
than the 0.15.5-37 version (containing the Oracle installer
patch) that you recommended. Unfortunately, it fails when using
this version.
I also tried installing Oracle using twm, with enlightenment
disabled. This didn't help either.
Furthermore, the errors that I'm encountering in the OUI are
not just toward the end of the installation. They happen from
the very beginning, right after I enter "./runInstall", and
continue every step of the way.

• Installing oracle 10g release 2 on spark solaris!! urgent help!

hi guys!
Am installing oracle 10g r2 on spark sun solaris. I did install the software without any pb, but when installing the database using dbca, I have this errors.
ORA-27154: post/wait create failed
ORA-27300: OS system dependent operation:semget failed with status: 28
ORA-27301: OS failure message: No space left on device
ORA-27302: failure occurred at: sskgpcreates
Edited my kernel parameters and in the /etc/system file, ai've added
set noexec_user_stack=1
set semsys:seminfo_semmni=100
set semsys:seminfo_semmns=1024
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=256
set semsys:seminfo_semvmx=32767
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=100
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=10
Space aint an issue and dont know how to over come this error!
Should ai just install the db using scripts and run the neccessary .sql scripts instead of going through dbca?
junior DBA in distress.

This appears to be because of low semaphores setting. Did you reboot your server after making the /etc/system parameter changes ?

• Error while installing Oracle 10g on Solaris 9 x86

Hi all,
I got several error after install oracle 10g. After I run the root.sh. It prompt :
Starting Oracle CSS service under init(1M)
Expecting the CRS daemons to be up within 120 seconds.
Giving up: Oracle CSS stack appears NOT to be running.
and when I start sqlplus, it prompt:
ERROR:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
Intel SVR4 UNIX Error: 2: No such file or directory
and following the error message prompt every minutes.
"oracle: (Oracle CSSD will be run out of init)"
"root: Failure in CSS initialization opening OCR."
I don't think reinstall oracle will solve my problem if I don't figure out what going wrong. Could anyone tell me what I need to do? Thanks very much for helping.
Cheers,
Alex

Check also if the t-bit is set:
[root@vtl1g121 ~]# ls -dl /tmp
drwxrwxrwt 11 root root 4096 Apr 10 11:44 /tmp
This is needed to mark the filesystem/directory as temporary.
Sometimes this can cause such problems also
Command: chmod +t /tmp

• Installing Oracle 10g on Windows VISTA or Windows 7

Hey,
I am planning to purchase a laptop and i am concerned about installing Oracle 10g .
So which of the Following OS is compatible?
1) Windows VISTA
2) Windows 7
Many Thanks!!
Cheers
Ramkannan.A
Singapore

I found this solution in http://msutic.blogspot.com/2009/08/how-to-instal-oracle-client-11g-on.html
It work for me. I´ve installed a Oracle 10.2.0.4 (vista e w2k8 x64) in a Windows 7 64 bits.
Thanks to Marko Sutic !
========================================================
To workaround this problem I've decided to edit refhost.xml file adding entry for Windows 7.
* in production there are 2 files refhost.xml. I´ve edited both.
Location of this file on my system:
.\stage\prereq\db\refhost.xml
.\stage\prereq\db_prereqs\db\refhost.xml
This is excerpt from newly edited refhost.xml file:
<CERTIFIED_SYSTEMS>
<!--Microsoft Windows 7-->
<OPERATING_SYSTEM>
<VERSION VALUE="6.1"/>
</OPERATING_SYSTEM>
</CERTIFIED_SYSTEMS>
New lines are added at the end of this excerpt after <!--Microsoft Windows 7-->. Notice version value=6.1.
In addiction to Marko Sutic tip, I´ve edited too the file ./install/oraparam.ini adding the new value (6.1) to the message:
[Certified Versions]
#You can customise error message shown for failure, provide value for CERTIFIED_VERSION_FAILURE_MESSAGE
Windows=5.0,5.1,5.2,6.0,6.1
I´ve finished now the installation, and all sounds good.
good luck

• How To install Oracle 8.0.5. on S.u.S.E. 5.3

Oracle 8.0.5. Installation on S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3
=================================================
After strugling for 3 weekends with the installation of Oracle
8.0.5. on a
S.u.S.E. 5.3 distribution here are the installation steps that
worked for me.
1.
Login as root
2.
Use:
cat 805ship.* | tar -zx for extracting the compressed files.
(Use a Linux partition as target, not a FAT !)
3.
Modify the Linux Kernel parameters and rebuild the Linux kernel.
In: /usr/src/linux/include/asm/shmparam.h set the parameters as
listed below:
SHMMAX 0Xffffffff
SHMMIN 1
SHMMNI 100
SHMSEG 10
In: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/sem.h
SEMMNS 200
SEMMNI 70
SEMMSL 32
4.
Install the glibc patch. This file opatch.rpm is available on
www.suse.de. (see:
http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb/fehr_oracle_1.html)
(S.u.S.E. 5.3 is based on libc5 but Oracle needs glibc)
rpm -U --force opatch.rpm
5.
Create the mounting points for the installation. I used the
structure as
listed below (use mkdir for creating and cd for changing
directories)
/usr/oracle/u01
/usr/oracle/u02
/usr/oracle/u03
/usr/oracle/u04
6.
Use yast for creating the Linux user "oracle" and the group
"dba". Make the
user "oracle" a member of the group "dba".
7.
Create the local bin directory:
/usr/local/bin
8.
Install the bash1. This file bash1.rpm is available on
www.suse.de.
(see: http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb/fehr_oracle_1.html)
(bash2 is the default shell for S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3 but for
executing the
oratab file we need bash1) rpm -U bash1.rpm
export ORACLE_OWNER=oracle
/bin/bash1 /cdrom/orainst/oratab.sh
9.
Set the environment variables for the oracle user in the
.profile file of the
oracle user.
# .profile is read for all login shells
# all other interactive shells will read .bashrc
# So read .bashrc also from .profile and make all changes to
.bashrc.
# Then you should always have your correct setup.
test -z "$PROFILEREAD" && . /etc/profile
if test -f ~/.bashrc; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi
# some people don't like fortune. If you have humor, please
enable it by
# uncommenting the following lines.
#if [ -x /usr/bin/fortune ] ; then
# echo
# /usr/bin/fortune
# echo
#fi
ORACLE_BASE=/usr/oracle/u01/app/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.0.5.
ORACLE_SID=ORAL

$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/classes111.zip
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib
GCC_EXEC_PREFIX=/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux-libc6/
PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
export ORACLE_BASE ORACLE_HOME ORACLE_SID ORACLE_TERM
export ORA_NLS33 TMPDIR ULIMIT CLASSPATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH
GCC_EXEC_PREFIX
ORAENV_ASK=NO
. /usr/local/bin/oraenv
10.
Login as oracle.
11.
Type the command
gcc -v
You should receive the following output:
oracle@Linux:/cdrom/orainst > gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux-libc6/i486-
linux/2.7.2.1/sp
gcc version 2.7.2.1
12.
Start the oracle installer.
cd /cdrom/orainst
./orainst
13.
After the installation, login as root and execute:
sh ./root.sh
in the /usr/oracle/u01/app/oracle/product/8.0.5./orainst
directory.
14.
Usr svrmgrl to start the server manager. If you get the error:
"libclntsh.so.1.0 : cannot open shared object file: No such file"
then the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable is missing.

I have tried to install Oracle on SuSE 5.2. I almost complted the
installation, but kept getting a failure on installing the
database. The last entry in the install.log is:
Leaving trace.ins- Entering Make Dependent section.
- Entering do_relink==false section.
- Leaving Make dependent section.
- Entering database actions section.
Deciding to start again from scratch, I tried deleting all files
and begining again, but now I get a different error running
orainst. The installer keeps responding that 'file x already
exists'. The name of the file changes each time I run it, and no
file of that name exists. I have tried deleting the temp
directories, as well as dropping them and recreating them
elsewhere (desperation!), but I canot stop this from happening:
An operating system error occurred while trying to spawn
'/orasys/app/oracle/product/8.0.5/bin/otrccref' while
redirecting
output to '^ @^'. (File exists.) Would you like to retry
the
operation, ignore the error, or allow the error to be
processed by
the Installer?
Does anyone have any ideas??

Hi Hub,
Done that, nothing:
$> env | grep -i LD

On the off-chance that it had something to do with installing Oracle 11.0 with ODS Developer 10.0, I've rolled my database installation back too, so now I have:
Oracle 10.2.01

• Can't install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on Pentium4

I have Pentium4 with 256MB SDRAM and Windows 2000 server installed on it. I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition but the setup doesn't run at all.
Is this a problem of O.S. or the processor?

I'm not Oracle support however I had the same issue and this is what I found.
Platforms Affected
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT, Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
Description
~~~~~~~~~~~
When installing Oracle Products with the Oracle Universal Installer (8.1.x) on machines, the installer hangs.
Likelihood of Occurrence
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT, Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
Possible Symptoms
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The failure typically is that the affected application simply terminates.
Workaround
~~~~~~~~~~
Not only will OUI be affected by this bug, most of the post-install
configuration tools will also be affected. Running these tools with
"-nojit" specified will avoid the hang, but it is not simple to specify "-nojit" for some of the products.
The following workaround works for the Windows operating system:
a. Copy only the install directory from the CD to the hard disk, say,
e:\temp.
b. Open oraparam.ini and make the following modifications (Assuming CD
c. Launch setup.exe from the temporary location on your hard drive
(i.e.,e:\temp\install\win32\setup.exe). This will use the modified
oraparam.ini and pick up the information from the CD since the
absolute locations are specified.
Choose a Custom install and choose not to create a database during the
install. This way, the Database Configuration Assistant will not be
launched during installation.
The Net8 Configuration Assistant will still be launched, and there is
no way to suppress it. You will need to kill the Net8 Configuration Assistant if it hangs due to the bug. The installation still will have been successful, and you can run the DBCA and NetCA after installation.
To kill NetCA if it hangs during installation:
In the "Configuration Tools" window, highlight the "Net8 Configuration
Assistant" and click "Stop". If that does not work, look for the most recent JRE process using the Task Manager, and kill it manually. NOTE: the OUI itself will also have a jre process. Be sure to kill the one with the most recent date, which should be the jre process being used for Net8CA, not the one for OUI itself.
After killing the configuration tools and continuing through the installation to the "End of Installation" screen, you should modify the configuration tools to use "-nojit", then call the appropriate tools from the Start Menu.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Pl post the complete error message. Have you unzipped the two files into the same directory ?
please if any one can give me any solution to run my database console. i don't know any method. i'm new to the oracle.
Thank you
I have checked that. but i also say that oracle 10g (10.2.0.4 ) support for windows server 2008 r2 X64.
Windows Server 2008 x64
Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.4 or later) for Windows x64 is certified on Windows Server 2008 x64 (all editions). 32-bit Oracle Database Client (10.2.0.4) and higher versions are supported on Windows Server 2008 x64.
I don'y think it's problem of os version or oracle version. Because when we purchase we asked from them what is the recommended version for our os. they told that 10g 10.2.0.4 is ok. previously i have installed this successfully. But now i can't.
however thanks for tried to help me. if u can find out any other reason\s please late me know..
thank you very much.
