Failure to mount
I back up 2 machines to my Time Capsule: one is hooked up by ethernet, the other by Airport (a PPC iMac). The Airport machine's back up failed with the error message:
'The backup disk could not be mounted.'
I can see and access the Time Capsule in the iMac's sidebar. However, I cannot get the iMac's 'sparsebundle' to mount. I get the error message:
'The following disk images failed to mount:
(Computer name) Reason: Resource temporarily unavailable.'
The other machine's sparsebundle mounts fine, even via Airport on the iMac.
Any ideas, short of deleting the iMac's back up image altogether and starting again?
I don't know if it's relevant, but I've just upgraded to 10.5.3 on the hardwired machine, but not on the iMac.
Had the same issue after updating to 10.5.3 but in reverse (My Macbook - wireless - no problems; Mini -ethernet - failure to mount.) The problem cleared up after rebooting the Mini. It stayed on "preparing to backup" for awhile but finally did its thing.

[SOLVED]failure to mount external usb drive, possible hardware malfu
Please excuse me for posting this in the Arch forums, but I'd appreciate at least a point in the right direction. Every Google hit I came up with had a dubious solution like "reinstall USB drivers". I've never had an external drive fail on me yet, and I think this might be a sign of one. I recently moved and set up a 750gb WD external drive connected to this laptop running Arch and WinXP. Drive was working fine until this morning. I see it's entry in Thunar, but when I try to mount it:
Failed to mount "xxx".
WARNING: Couldn't set locale to 'en_PH.utf8' thus some file names may not
be correct or visible. Please see the potential solution at
http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#locale

Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Permission denied
Please check '/dev/sdb1' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions,

I got an entirely different error msg in Arch before, suggesting a chkdsk but I don't remember beyond that.
In Windows, I get USB device not recognized. I've tried turning the thing off and back on, making sure it's connected and swiping cables, rebooting Arch, nothing. Is it fried? Also, how does one even run a chkdsk on a drive that can't be mounted in Windows?
Thanks for the assistance.

Failure to mount a flash drive after updates?
Hey everyone,
I was able to mount flash drives (etc...) for the duration of my install, and sometime in the last week or so I've become unable to do so. Its gotta be because I updated something and I broke it, no idea what or when this happened because I havent tried mounting any media in a while. The flash drive works on other computers and i get this error message from thunar:
Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.17" (uid=1000 pid=3605 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1108 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)).
Any idea what I could do to fix it?
Thanks for your time.I see from an older post someone had something simular: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=325121
Suggestions:
* Make sure you are in the 'storage' group still.
* Do the command 'fdisk -l', does the device come up (mine comes up in the /dev/sdb disk and below my main Arch Linux setup)
Hope this helps! -

Unable to mount external fire-wire hard drive - help, please!
After working the last couple of days to resolve the failure of an internal drive, now one of my external drives (LaCie fire-wire) will not mount. I was using it to back up the bad internal drive, and probably forgot to eject the drive before turning it off; don't know if this really makes any difference, but just in case...
If I use Disk Utility I can see the LaCie drive, but it will not mount.
When I tried to verify the drive got the following message -
Invalid sibling link
The volume LaCie HD needs to be repaired
1 HFS volume checked - volume needs repair
Next I tried to repair the drive, and was told -
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
This is where I stopped. I read another post somewhere in the forums about making a disk image of the drive, but I'm afraid of making things worse by proceeding without knowing what I'm doing. Any ideas on how I can somehow retrieve the data in the LaCie drive?
Once again, thanks in advance for any help!Hi! Diskwarrior is always better at repairing drive directories which constitute 99% of all drive problems. I run it fairly regularly usually once a month. BUT I always run it at the first sign of weirdness or problems AND every time I have had a power failure or a forced restart or shutdown because those events usually always damage the drive's directory. Often even though the directory is damaged OSX can go ahead and mount it and it will work ok but eventually the damage builds every time one of those events occur and finally there is a failure to mount or boot. [SOLVED] Arch failed to mount /boot
Hey there,
after my btrfs filesystem somehow got corrupted, so it would only mount my "/"-filesystem as read-only, I backed it up with rsync, recreated the partition and then transfered the data back. After that, I was unable to boot anymore with this error:
[1.593560] systemd-fsck[306]: fsck.fat 3.0.27 (2014-11-12)
[1.594292] systemd-fsck[306] /dev/sda1: 98 files, 43105/98304 clusters
Mounting boot...
[FAILED]Failed to mount /boot.
See "systemctl status boot.mount" for details
SystemD the prompted me with it's emergency mode, but this didn't react to any keyboard presses, so I couldn't check the exact error with sth. like journalctl -xb. I then booted a, today downloaded, Arch Live-CD and tried to access the logs via journalctl -b -D /var/log/journal/ didn't work out: It only had the logs from before the boot problem.
With a bit of googling I figured a way of fixing this could be chrooting in and reinstalling initramfs, typing chroot errored out with:
chroot: failed to run command /usr/bin/zsh: No such file or directory
I tried commenting out /boot in fstab, but at booting something [FAILED] with Load Kernel Modules and I instantly got prompted with a blank, black screen with a "_" blinking in the top left corner, like a normal console, expect any prompt of any kind was missing and it didn't react to my keystrokes, similiar to SystemD's emergency mode
So essentially two smaller problems with few google results are hindering me from solving my big problem.
Thanks for any help in advance,
Quanttek

Probably easier to use `arch-chroot` though:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … rch-chroot
Thanks. Using arch-chroot worked out. It is/was certainly no environment issue, I even tested it with both i386 and x86_64.
I used it to reinstall mkinitcpio and to update my system, so now on boot I dont get a failure on mounting /boot anymore, but I still have problems with Load Kernel Modules.
My screen now looks something like this: http://m.imgur.com/ATWHJoq
Again it's not reacting to any keystrokes. I'll get some sleep now and will look tomorrow into getting some information from the journal logs. -
My two Lacie hard drives won't mount on my G5 running Tiger. They were fine on my G4 iMac running Panther. I've tried using the Lacie Update Tool but the drives aren't recognised. I've tested the firewire cables on another drive that works and they're fine, so it's not cables.
Both drives power up okay and whir into action, but just aren't talking to the G5.

Lacie 40GB (no model number, "DESIGN BY F.A.PORSCHE", no model number).
Any ideas much appreciated.Reply
This happened to me with a LaCie external drive as well.
The problem is that LaCie formats the drives as PC-based
and not Mac Extended, so unless you reformatted the
drives to Mac when you started using them, your access
to them on any Mac may result in a failure to mount.
Once that happens retrieval of data is made more difficult
because of this formatting incongruity.
There is no way you can get the data once your G4 quits
mounting them. If you can get the data off of the drives,
back it up and then reformat the drives using Mac's Disc
Utility. Then you can reload the data and I suspect all of
your Macs will then mount the drives via Firewire.
Good Luck!

MacBook Pro won't mount *2nd* DVD until after reboot.
MacBookPro5,1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.53 GHz, 4G ram, Mac OS 10.6.8
This MacBook Pro will not mount more than 1 DVD without a reboot in between discs!
These are commercial movie DVD's in excellent condition.
I can mount and watch one commercial DVD with no problems, but when I eject that disc after viewing and insert another commercial disc, it will not mount. I can hear the drive spin up, then spin down, then spin up again, etc... eventually the Finder takes over and says that I've inserted a blank disc and do I want to ininialize?
Eject command does not work while this spin up/spin down loop is occurring. If I Shut Down before the Finder finally recognizes there's a disc in trouble, then reboot and hold the trackpad button, the disc will eject. If I then trash all DVD preferences, the disc will mount and eject on command.
Inserting another disc will result in failure to mount! Etc...
Any ideas?I should have updated this ages ago. Sorry.
The solution to the problem was to remove the DVD drive, take the cover off it and clean the lens in the reader mechanism. Just Google up the disassembly directions for your particular Mac model.
Downhillracer1's solution, compressed air blown in through the disc slot is certainly easier and might do the trick if all you've got is a spec of dust on the lens, but if it's a problem with some kind of film deposited, opening it up and cleaning the lens is more thorough.
My DVD drive now reads and burns with no problem. -
USB 2 external hard drive won't mount on my G4 dual 450
I had a problem with my Intel iMac and had to take it for service. I tried to hook up the lacie usb 2 external drive that was my backup for the imac to my G4 but it won't mount (using the built in usb 1.1). I also have a usb 2 and firewire card in this machine and that won't work either.
It will mount on my G4 powerbook though, at usb1.1.
I don't see why the older G4 wount mount it too. Any ideas?Pat,
When connected, does it show up in Disk Utility? If so, it's failure to mount is probably due to restrictive permissions and differing ownership. In other words, you probably have permissions for the volume set such that only the "owner" can access it, and said ownership differs on your G4 tower.
In fact, the drive is probably mounting, but the mounted volume is inaccessible to you (on the tower).
If you find that the drive is, in fact, showing up in Disk Utility, and you wish to access it from the tower, let us know. There are steps you can take to correct the problem.

Ever snce installing 10.4.6 (I think) .dmg files downloaded with Safari (or Firefox) will not mount. If I double click the .dmg on the desktop, it goes away, does nothing and after a long time comes back with a dialogue box (I have never seen before) saying "Warning The following disk images failed to mount Reason: Device not configured"
Any ideas??!!Have you got another harddrive or second partition to
which you can install OSX?
Nope. That's why I'm so unhappy.
Or try restarting and holding the cmd key ("apple"
key) and the s together until the system boots up in
UNIX - other keyboard short cuts here:
I already did a safe reboot. No change. I also tried using my other account on the Mac - no difference.
and run "f@*ed disk", well properly the "fsck"
command from that UNIX
prompt. See
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
for more advice
I ran DiskUtility (both Repair Permissions and, from the install disk, Repair Disk), the disk is fine. The failure to mount, Device not configured issue remains.
I also used MainMenu to do the Daily, Weekly, and Monthly scripts. I haven't started cleaning cache files yet, with the exception of com.apple.kernelcaches and Extensions.kextcache, as recommended in another post.
I'm leaving the reinstall option until I have more time, and I'll just be mad at Apple for the poor update in the meantime. -
Downloaded update disk won't mount
I've noticed a number of updates failing to complete due to a failure in mounting the downloaded disk image.
Little snitch suggests an hdiutil command failure when it tried but I have had failures with various Google updates and VLC as well.
Any thoughts?paulhoau wrote:

How do I clone an external disk using CCC?
I have a MacBook Air and because it has only 256 GB and I need about three times that space for storing movies, document files etc., I use an external hard disk to keep these files on.
I formatted this disk using Mac Extended Journal but I did not put the Snow Leopard Operating System on it. I just move files from the computer's hard drive to the disk as required.
I had a scare once where the data on another external hard disk was wiped out because of a faulty USB cord. All the movies were lost and I could not recover the data. The disk also failed to mount. This problem kept happening several times. When I got rid of the faulty USB cord, the external disk mounted and I never lost data again. I am certain all the problems were due to the faulty USB cord. I have been using the same external disk ever since and it has been working fine with the non-faulty USB cord so I am sure it didn't have anything to do with the disk and it was the USB cord that was the problem. I used the same faulty USB cord with other external disks and the same problems arose - failure to mount etc.
This is the background for why I want to make a copy of this external drive. I don't want to lose the movies and other data on this disk if something goes wrong again and want everything on another disk just in case.
I usually use Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups. But that is with a external disk that has OS 10.6.8 on it.
I really don't want to put OS 10.6.8 on the external drive where I store movies and other over-spill data on it.
How do I go about making a copy of this external disk using CCC (or using another program if CCC won't work for this)?
I have two USB ports on my MBA. I prefer to use CCC over SuperDuper because I had a problem with SuperDuper in the past.So as I understand it, CCC will clone any disk to any disk so long as it's formatted to Mac (extended Journal) and I don't have to put the Mac operating system on the disks that I am copying from and copying to?
Thanks for answering. -
Leopard and panther open directory server hate each other
So I got Leopard the first day but didn't install it till a week later 'coz I was working on a Final Cut project. When I was ready to install I saw all these problems people are having and decided to backup all my user files before I do it which I've never done before (what can you say, I trust Apple engineers!) Anyway, after an upgrade install I found that my PowerMac Dual 2.7GHz G5 with 3.5GB of RAM was slow, very slow, crawling slow. Every button I pressed, every app I tried to open, every response seemed it'd take at least 5 mins and Activity Monitor showed that those apps I was trying to interact with were not responding but if I was patient enough to wait, most of them would eventually come around.
After a whole night searching the Apple forum and googling, I couldn't find any solution. So I decided to wipe the hard disk clean and do a clean installation. Amazingly everything worked just as they should and installation only took like 15 mins or so. After I finished installing all my usual apps back into my PowerMac I was, again, busy working on another Final Cut project. And finally that project was concluded so I can look at my new Leopard installation and see if I've missed anything after the clean installation. I found out that I forgot to add my office LDAP server information into the Directory Access and I went ahead and added it.
I was distracted by something else after I added the LDAP info and an hour or so later when I restart my PowerMac, it started to act weird and crawling slow again, just like when I first did the upgrade installation. I totally forgot what I did to make it slow and I was super worry. After like 2 hours of ghost hunting in my PowerMac, I decided to let it sleep for the night and try to figure it out in the morning. On my way home I finally remembered what I did to make it slow! It's the LDAP info!!!! That's the only system related thing I added since before I did the last Final Cut project.
I searched the Apple forum again last night to see if anyone has the same or related problem but I couldn't find anything close. I came to work this morning and decided to test my finding. The PowerMac was still super slow and I figured if it's directory access related, then if I unplug the network cable, my Mac should be smart enough to understand that there is no point in searching for a directory and simply gives up. I unplug the cable and my Mac is up and running smoothly again. I opened the Directory Access app and delete the LDAP entry, restart the Mac, plug the network cable back in and everything is fine now!
I believe the problem is more on my Panther (10.3.9) server (ok fine! we are cheap, we didn't think a Tiger server was worth it! was I wrong!) than on the Leopard itself and that's why I couldn't find anything related on the forum. Is the Panther server LDAP module faulty to begin with that caused the problem? I don't know. I just know that Leopard does not play well with Panther's Open Directory service.I've convinced myself that all the problems which I'm experiencing with failures to mount, disappearing CD/DVD drives are nothing to do with Windows XP because all my problems are occurring under Windows 2000 (on different computers). Looks like Apple have taken a leaf out of Microsoft's rule book (put the product out in the market before it's ready and let the punters do all the hard work finding and fixing the bugs).

How to copy a networked TimeMachine backup to a USB drive and restore from it?
Hi,
I backup my MacBook Air with TimeMachine to my QNAP NAS which offers a TimeMachine backup service and I can restore data from it OK.
Working in IT, and being a bit paranoid about important data loss, I am concerned that if I was robbed or my house burnt down I would most likely lose both the MacBook and the TimeMachine Backup on my NAS :-(
To protect against this I have backup my (linux based) NAS to an external drive that I keep offsite. This drive is encrypted to keep my data secure with a Linux form of encryption (cryptsetup) and hence can't be plugged into a MacBook to try and restore from it - I doubt this would work either as the TimeMachine data is not located in the root of the drive.
So what I have done to test my restore process is to mount the encrypted NAS backup that include the TimeMachine backup folders on a Linux machine and then copy the TimeMachine data to the root of an HFS+ formatted external USB drive.
But, now I am stuck as how to try and restore something from this to my MacBook to see if the copy of the TimeMachine backup is good. If I press the Alt key on the TimeMachine icon, I can select an alternate backup device and when I enter TimeMachine to browse the data, I can browse the structure but there is no option to go back in time !! It seems like it is not possible to restore from this copy of the TimeMachine backup.
Does anyone know if this should be possible, and if so, what am I doing wrong here?

GaryFor anyone else that may be in a similar situation, I can confirm that this does actually work.
I am unsure why I was not able to mount the original sparseimage that I copied to the USB drive before, but I have gone through the entire process again and I could successfully mount the TM sparseimage onto my MacBook and restore files from within it using TimeMachine to my Mac.
This is a Disaster Recovery solution only needed for if both my NAS and Macbook get stolen or damaged so I am happy with this solution for now.
I will try the restore process several more times from my monthly backups to reassure myself that the first failure to mount the sparse image was an anomaly.
This is the process that I have tested:
Configure MacBook to backup to TimeMachine Service running on QNAP NAS device.
Perform regular backup of QNAP NAS Device (Linux) including the TimeMachine backup data to an external USB drive with encryption enabled and store this device safely off-site
In time of loss of both NAS and MacBook, Time Machine data can be recovered to another Mac without the need of the NAS using the following process:
Mount the external drive containing the backup of the NAS filesystem (ext4) which is encrypted onto a Linux host so it is readable - use the cryptsetup luksOpen options to access the encrypted filesystem then mount it.
Mount a n empty HFS+ formatted USB drive on the Linux host
Use Rsync to copy the sparsebundle from the external NAS drive backup disk to the root of the USB Drive
Insert the HFS+ formatted USB containing the sparesbundle into the Mac's USB port
Double click the sparsebundle to mount it onto the Mac as a Volume
Using Alt button and the TimeMachine icon, select use alternative backup disk and you should see the TM backup in the sparsebundle
Enter TimeMachine and you should be able to restore any/all files
Hope that helps someone else and thanks to LaPastenague for pointing me in the direction of some of the answers I needed.
Rgds

Issues with RAID Volumes with SLES10 on x4100
I upgraded an x4100 from SLES9 to SLES10 with 4 SAS drives which were configured as 2 RAID-1 volumes in hardware and am having problems with the names that these devices get.
The root file-system was installed on the 1st volume, /dev/sda, and the other volume, /dev/sdb, was mounted at /local.
Even at installation, the 1st volume was named /dev/sdb and the 2nd volume, /dev/sda. I had to pull out the 2nd volume so that the 1st volume would be correctly named and I could proceed the update.
After the update was successful and the system booted with no problems, I tried to insert the 2nd volume set again, but the MPT driver would insist on swapping the device names, leading to a hard freeze after complaining about failure to mount the root file-system.
Is there any way to fix this issue? I tried installing the driver for SLES10 from LSI Logic's website, but the problem persists.
Thank you.I'm assuming SLES10 is a 2.6 linux kernel, which now includes the new hardware device naming scheme based upon the UUID (unique unit ID) of the hardware. The scheme is called "udev", and it runs at system startup.
When the system starts, 'udev' looks for the uuid's of resident storage hardware, and assigns and creates a /dev entry for each unique UUID. With this scheme, you could then move a disk from slot 0 to slot3, for example, and it would retain its /dev entry. So, for example, if the disk in slot 0 was named /dev/sda, and it was moved to slot3, it would still be mounted as /dev/sda.
You might want to 'clear' your device names (there is a procedure to do so... check the SUSE docs), then restart the system, verify your raid configuration, then allow the reboot to assign new /dev entries.
