Failure to shut down & missing dock icons

2013 MBP & Yosemite 10.10.1
My MBP is regularly displaying the message "Safari (example) quit because of a problem" AND "your computer shut down because of a problem". The computer often becomes unresponsive following either of these messages. If I try and restart / shut down (depending on circumstances), the computer's screen darkens and continues to show the cursor, and the keyboard remains illuminated, but nothing else happens. I have to shut it down using the power on / off key. When I start it back up again, most of the dock icons are missing, although mousing along the dock shows the application names and the apps themselves are accessible from the dock.
Help appreciated!

Hi Linc. herewith the latest panic report. There are no crash reports listed. Thanks for your response.

  • HT201730 Missing Dock Icons

Missing dock icons include Mail, Safari, iTunes, Contacts on my iMac... the applications run but the icons have been missing since last Yosemite upgrade yesterday. Rebooting doesn't restore them, any helpful hints?

Can you open the Applications folder from the Finders 'Go' menu? Applications should be stored in there if all is correct.
You should also be able to find applications in Spotlight or in LaunchPad too, if you are familiar with those. It's worth checking the main /Applications folder is correct, try the Go menu again & see if it looks correct – Calendar, Contacts, Safari & Mail & all the default Apple apps should be installed there.

  • Failure to Shut Down

For the past couple of days when I manually shut down my G5 Dual 2 GHz the Dock, Finder windows and Icons go away as they should during shut down, but the Mac stays on and I am forced to use the Power button to finish the shut down.
Other than recent software updates I am at a loss as to what is happening here.

Is the failed shut down scenario like this?
    1. Press "Control Eject" (no quotes) to show the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" and then press the Shut Down button.
    2. All applications quit, including the Finder, as expected.
    3. Only a blue background is shown and also the mouse pointer, as expected. Yet the mouse pointer does not go away, which is not expected. The Mac remains like that for ever, with the mouse pointer functional (you can move it)
    4. Pressing "Control Eject" (no quotes) again shows the "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" again. Clicking Restart or Shut Down buttons makes such window to go away (as expected), but the Mac remains as before (step 3). Repeating step generates the same results.
    5. You must force shut down, pressing the power button for a few seconds.
Both on PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.

  • Failure to shut down or restart

Have G4 Quicksilver (2002 model) that now hangs up on restart or shut down. Upon clicking on either Restart or Shut Down, all icons on desktop, menu bar, and dock dissapear but desktop pattern remains and computer stalls. Have to shutdown manually (front on button on computer) then restart manually by pressing same button after computer actually shuts down. Any ideas to correct problem????
    G4 Quicksilver (2002) 800 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   17" screen

First try repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
If that does not work, try repairing the hard disk directory:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
And if that does not show any problems, but it still won't shut down, see if some third party peripheral which is connected is preventing shut down. If any of those peripherals stores data, drag its icon to the trash first before disconnecting it. If no third party peripheral appears to be affecting shutdown, and the above does not help, see if creating a new administrative user and shutting down from that user helps. Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts is where you assign new users. If that works, then it says some preference in your existing user is corrupted. Let us know how far you get?

  • After 10.5.8 update no shut down, Finder, Dock, program folder issues

    Hi all,
I've seen and read similar topics to these issues but as the given tips couldn't help me I open another topic.
Yesterday I installed the 10.5.8 update. Since then I cannot access the Dock, it even doesn't show up, the Finder does not let me access the program folder and my Mac doesn't shut down at all, only by using Contol, Command and Power (sorry, does not know the proper terms in English).
I tried to repair the disk by using Disk Utility from the initial DVD and it did repair a lot of stuff. In the end, it shows "Keys out of order" in red and that my disk could be repaired but one volume couldn't. If I try to repair permissions it doesn't even start saying something of "... inaccessible ...".
After trying this no change in my issues.
    What could I do more?
Thanx for any tips and help
    Steph

You can find the directions here.
Good luck and let us know.
EDIT: Erase the Disk with DU, yes. But don't install the system, if you want to do a full TM restore.

firefox locked on a website on March 23 and stopped functioning altogether as a server PLUS I can no longer shut off my MAC except manually and then manually turn it on with out the Mac start up sequence.
I cannot download updates as Firefox cancels my attempts as it cancels my effort to shut down normally ...it is a great disappointment and a disaster to this non techie who was advised to download Firefox by other more savvy users...HELP

Could you please uninstall firefox from your Mac. Also if you'd like [[Firefox Hangs]] article could also help.

  • Missing dock icons in Mavericks

Just a few minutes ago, nothing would load in Finder past when it opens to my home folder. I figured I would try a log out and see if that would fix it. It did, but now my dock is showing missing icons. The app is still there, but only Finder, Calendar, and Trash icons are visible. I can still open the app and the light comes on, but no icon. I restarted and that didn't fix anything. Any ideas?
This literally just happened, and I wasn't doing anything unusual.

Some suggestions for all of you:
read Sco1by's post and then repair your hard drive. Don't just verify it, repair it: Boot into your recovery partition (hold down ⌘R at restart until you see the Apple symbol), go to Disk Utility, and repair your hard drive. While you're there, repair permissions too. OSX Tips Using the Recovery HD
This type of problem with macs is usually due to some third-party software that the user has added, usually an "enhancer", "optimizer", "cleaner", "defragmenter", "utility", anti-virus software, or "haxie". Collectively these are known as "crapware". They are notorious for causing problems like this with the GUI. They are unnecessary and harmful. They are popular with recent converts from the windows world. About 99% of the time, when people write in to these forums about symptoms like this, that's the problem.
I'd remove all these apps from your computer. If you can. They can be impossible to remove.
If the problems persist, then the only option is to start over, back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean install.
Then resist the temptation to install more crapware.

  • Missing Dock Icons

I accidently removed my osx, internet launch icon from my dock...(the one shaped like a white satellite). I've searched my entire computer trying to find it to put it back on the dock but cannot find it. How do I get it back?? I can still launch the internet via safari, but this can only open one internet search at a time, whereas the osx icon could open multiple. Please HelP!
    Huevo

If you mean the spring icon at the right side, open Safari, enter http://www.apple.com/macosx/ as the address, and drag the blue globe to the left into the Dock. This can be done with any URL.

  • Missing dock icon for Max OS X

I used to have a little icon in dock. It looked like the "@" symbol on a spring, and when I clicked it, I went straight to www.apple.com. Well, it's gone and I cannot find it anywhere. HELP!

I'm not sure that you can.
Frankly, I don't put URL shortcuts in the dock as they take a lot of space. I just use bookmarks in Safari.
What you could do is to create a folder, make the folder icon whatever you want, and drag as many URL shortcuts to the folder as you want. Put the folder in the dock, right click on it and choose "display as folder" (instead of "display as stack") and then click it, and select the URL from the list that you want to launch. It will give very similar functionality, with a custom icon of your choosing.

does anyone know why this happened or how to fix it?

Sorry, but is this really an iPad question? From what you seem to be asking, this seems to be an issue with Mac OS X and the App Store, not with an iPad, but you've posted in the iPad forum.
If this really is a Mac question, the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion forum can be found here:

  • Macbook not shutting down

It seems that whenever I try to shut down my macbook there’s always a program that doesn’t quit and stops the computer from shutting down. Right now safari is keeping my mac from shutting down, and force quit does not seem to help. The menu bar and icons on the desktop disappear but dock stays there and then i get an error message. Any fixes??
    Thanks all
    edit:
Safari is quitting now. however now it is the finder that is preventing my macbook from shutting down. The icons and menu bar still disappear and the blue status light under the finder icon disappears but the macbook just sits there until the error message pops up saying that the finder could not quit. Relaunching the finder in force quit doesn’t seem to be working either.

Exactly the same thing happened to me! I tried to shut down and it just did nothing. Tried to shut down again, and got the message that shutdown had timed out because Safari was still running, and it suggested I shut down Safari first. I had just shut it down using the "x" in the upper left, but I figured sometimes that doesn't work. But the taskbar didn't indicate that Safari was on, so I tried the force quit menu selection, and it didn't list Safari.
Tried to shut down again and this time all the desktop icons and Finder went away, but the background pattern was still there. So I launched Finder again from the taskbar, and the fan started whirring like crazy. Went through this procedure a couple of times, and finally just shut it off with the shutdown switch.
I just had the topcase replaced because the keyboard had shorted out for some reason, and that apparently shorted the shutdown/start button so that the system would just shutdown for no reason. Now I've got the opposite problem! I'm hoping this time it's just a software issue.
By the way, due to the MacBook problems I bought a Windows system and am responding to this thread on that new computer. I really like Leopard most of the time, but am getting a little sick of this sort of thing.

  • Finder will not let me log out or shut down. just updated to Lion 10.7.5 Says programs still running

I have just updated my Macbook(late 2009) to Lion OS X 10.7.5 and when I go to logout or shut down the Finder icon starts jumping. I click on it and a popup window says, "The Finder can't quit because some operations are still in progress"  - "You can cancel or stop the operations, and then try again". I go to the Dock and everything is closed. Wait! I go to Mac App Store and iTunes Stores. I log out of both of them. I try to log out and shut gown again and Finder still won't let me. Same message.
Is anyone else out there experiencing this. Can anyone help me? What is still running? How to find out what is still running? I dreaded this ever since the announcement of ML.

    Do a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
