Failure to sleep

I have got my iMac preferences set to sleep after 10 minutes, but nothing happens. Can anyone suggest a possible cause please.

I resolved a sleep problem with the Mac Mini. My symptoms were that I could not sleep the computer with the pull-down menu. It would enter sleep for a few seconds then wake right up again. So, I started to Hibernate the computer. That worked for a while but eventually I could not Hibernate either.
After looking at .plist's, energy saver, wake on network - all the usual suspects, I dug into my logs to find the cause of the wake. The command is
syslog |grep -i "Wake reason ="
I was seeing all the wake reasons was EHC2 - which was appearing my console log as well but I didn't know what it meant. After more digging I concluded that EHC2 was device #2 on the USB bus. Anything looking like OHC, EHC, or USB would likely be an external device while LID0 is the "lid" on a laptop, PWRB is the power button, and RTC is the clock.
Once had a clue that device#2 was causing the wake, I used a USB sniffer app. One is provided in Apple's developer software, USB Prober. From here, it got a little hazy as the output wasn't exactly easy to follow. But, it appeared that something with a description of a "4 port hub" woke up my computer. This turned out to be an internal hub in the case of my external Newertech HD - the stackable HD provides additional USB and firewire ports. The kicker is that I had the USB hub connected but all the ports were empty.
I switched the HD to firewire only and unplugged the USB cable entirely. That was the end of my sleep problems. I didn't seem to have this problem with my old Mini running Tiger, only the new Mini running SL.
Hopefully anyone else having sleep problems in Snow Leopard can find some useful information in all of this.

  • Failure to Sleep... HEAT build up...

    I all,
I have a week 40 macbook 1.83GHz machine. This afternoon I put it to sleep (closed the lid) with a fully charged battery. Upon return from my son's Karate class the book was not sleeping, FANS WERE ROARING, heat was incredible (really really hot!!!... hotter then an MDD without a heat sink), battery was delpleted to 1.5hours (normally holds 4.5 or so). It appears that it failed to go to sleep and remained active with the lid closed (lid was fully closed and "latched"). I have not been able to reproduce this effect.
Is this a common issue with the MBs?
Is this a sign of an ill SMC (PMU)?
Is there a switch in the hinge armature or is it a super magnet like in the old PowerBook G3 Series that is failing?
    Thoughts?
(The book is less then two weeks old... is this a sign of bigger issues? ).

    Hi Adam,
I also had to force it to shut down and... upon reboot had the "unexpected" quit message.
So far my book has not repeated this misadventure (failure to sleep follwed by running with the lid closed and then EXCESSIVE heat and really loud fan spin). I hope it will not do so as it was terrbily alarming. It was scortching hot.
I will watch it for a bit and if it repeats it is going in for service or at least a checkup. I have owned mac laptops for years (150, 165c, PB1400, Wallstreet, Lombard and Pismo... iBook1.33 and now this mac book)... I have never had this happen before with any other book in over 12 yearrs of Mac Laptop useage. I hope it is a "one of" event. I miss my iBook1.33. it was about as fast as this macbook for day to day lite use and it never misbehaved.
    Dave.

  • MBP: Failure to sleep, leads to forced hard boot and sometimes overheating

I am new to the Mac world, but it appears as though these are both common issues. I am thinking that my problem is more about failure to sleep properly than the overheating (it wouldn't overheat if it were asleep properly!).
    Situation:
    1. I have a bunch or a few programs running.
    2. I close the lid.
    3. It looks like the display shuts down.
    4. I put the machine in my bag, which has a furry inside to prevent scratches.
    5. I live my life for a while.
    6. Later, I find that my MBP is burning up, opening the lid doesn't get the machine to "wake up", the batteries have been drained, and I need to hard reboot to get the machine back.
Anyway, I have read on some groups that the failure to properly sleep is a hardware problem, others opt for an OS upgrade, and one promising lead that suggested I pull the power before closing the lid.
It seems that several of the conversations I've read are old, and my MBP is only 2 months old, so I think I have the latest OS builds. Pulling the power cord seems to not matter. This leaves me with the possibility of a hardware issue... My best guess is that my machine a) can't figure out if it is plugged in or not; b) can't figure out if it is asleep or awake; or c) restarts, even with the lid closed, and without displaying the display.
I suspect that when it gets running again, it heats up, burns the battery down to zero, and forces the OS to crash when the batteries run dry or nearly so.
So, I thought I'd post my dilemma here, and maybe someone who is "current" on this issue on MBP's could suggest a good course of action. I have AppleCare, so it is certainly an option to get the hardware replaced, however, is that going to actually help?
Is this as common a problem as it seems like to me (100% of my Apple MBPs have this issue, even though my sample size is small at 1)?
Are 10% of MBPs afflicted like this or more like 90%?
Will Apple take care of me or will it be a battle?
I really appreciate anyone who can help me out with suggestions on what course of action to take next.
    Kevin

Eve, I think you are having the same problem I had. Basically, sleep seems to not be very resilient, and in my case I think it was partially because the machine kept running and then entered a semi-failure state when the battery finally drained out. I think the machine just can't handle running out of power, which is somewhat reasonable. I'd like to see Apple make the machine recognize that it is sleeping, and running out of power, and then automatically deep sleep itself to protect your session...
You can test to see if we had the same problem by doing this when the machine "won't wake back up":
    - make sure the power cable is in
    - depress the power button for a long time, like 10 seconds to force a hard reboot (it seems weird, because the machine looks like it is off already)
    - you may "feel" the machine shut down (I don't know how else to describe it, but you can "tell" that it shut down).
    - release the power button
    - then, press the power again, as if to turn on
    - I think you will find that your MBP has now started back up
So, if you see this problem when your MBP has been sleeping for a while, I think you have the same problem I did. Now, if you deep sleep it (using the widget referred to above) every time you put it away, and wake it up with the power button, I think you will have very few problems.
The only problems I've had since starting this process was that a couple of times, the MBP didn't realize it was quite awake and feel back into deep sleep. This wasn't so bad as you just had to hit the power button to wake it up again. I'm also not 100% sure that there wasn't user error (me!) that caused that problem...
Anyway, give this widget a try and see if your problem goes away. I think you will find that it does.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot, sleep light is on, nothing else

    Help!
I've got a late 2007 MacBook Pro that got a new HD under warranty in late 2008. It's worked great through last night until this morning. This am, when I turn it on (fully charged and plugged in), it won't boot. The machine makes a little noise, then the sleep light comes on. It never even gets to the "chime" to show that the system is loading.
    I've tried the following:
Reset the PRAM - it won't do it
Start in safe mode - it won't do it
Startup from Install disk - it won't do it
Access the drive in firewire Target mode - it won't do it
Reset the SMC - no change
All it does, is turn on the sleep light, spin the DVD drive (because I put the install DVD in) and nothing else.
    Any ideas?
I have a Time Machine Backup that is 2-3 weeks old, but I'm still likely to lose some of my photos, emails, etc, if this is a hard drive again.
    Please help!

Did you do anything in particular to get it to boot up? If I could get mine to boot then I could work with it. I've got an external monitor that might connect, but if not, I should be able to share the screen from my Mac Mini. But I can't get it to boot.
Also, what time zone are you in? Since the same problem happened to us both on the same day, I wonder if something in the date is causing a failure in sleep/wake. I've had my fingers crossed that when tomorrow rolls around it will boot up again. Crazy, perhaps, we'll see. You give me hope.

  • MacBook Pro (early 2011) won't boot, sleep light comes on and fans come on high.

Just had a stick of RAM and the CPU replaced by Apple for an unrelated issue, but now this has cropped up. A little searching indicated that the GPU became unsoldered, but I'm curios if anyone can shed some light on this issue.
    Thanks.

  • 10.5.2 update and Leopard Graphics update = no sleep mode

All, After updating my MacBook Pro to 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics update, my computer will not longer enter sleep mode after a specified time. I can manually set the computer to sleep mode, but it will not automatically go to sleep mode. I have tried resetting the System Management Control Center VIA http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 and everything else in that doc.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA Jon

Call AppleCare and see if they can help.
    Regular trouble shooting
    1) Create a new account, name it test or something
    2) log into that account to see if the behavior changes
    3) If it does, then there is some problem in your own account.
    4) If it doesn't, restart.
    5) If the behavior still doesn't change, there is some system configuration error
    In this case
    6) Open Disk Utility. Verify your disk, then repair permissions (not likely to fix the problem but will at least eliminate that possibilty)
    7) Get a copy of Leopard Cache Cleaner and do a MODERATE cache cleaning
    8) Restart
If still not fixed, reset PRAM and the SMU. Look on the Apple web site for instructions for your particular computer.
If still not different, do an Archive and Install. However go to the Apple web site and download the 10.5.2 Combo updater first. After you Archive and Install from either the disk that came with your computer (assuming that it is Leopard) or the retail Leopard installer. Then run the combo updater. Then run Software Update.
These problems are disturbing and really shouldn't happen, but they do. However, they can be fixed and you'll find that Mac OS is, overall, much better than the alternatives.
BTW, I just went through this whole mess for crashes on wake from sleep (USB issues) and failure to sleep (printer driver issue). Another computer had DHCP problems and actually needed a reinstall. However both of them are working fine now even though it was a pain getting there.

  • Automatic "Sleep" Functional for Anyone after 10.5.2?

I'm wondering if anyone's "sleep" works after 10.5.2? If it does now, but didn't at first, what steps did you take to correct the issue? Is this failure-to-sleep problem restricted only to Intel-based systems?

    Hi Daddy,
I do not wish to appear offensive... but you've still not told me if you have an Intel-based Mac with OS X 10.5.2. Details at the bottom of your post do not clarify this issue!
I would like to know if anyone with this configuration now has a perfectly functioning automatically timed "sleep." This question has either a "yes" or "no" answer. I am particularly interested in hearing from those who experienced an unresponsive automatic "sleep" after upgrading (i.e., an initial "no") who have subsequently found a "fix" that reinstates a functioning automatic (timed) "sleep." If no one in this category responds within the next day or so, I'm obliged to infer that all Intel-based Macs (and possibly others) most likely experience this problem after updating to 10.5.2. +I view this as a truly minor inconvenience as I remain able to put the computer to sleep manually.+
However, I have acceded to your request: I dismounted both FW drives (physically and electrically). The Mac was rebooted with no open applications --- the monitor shut down at the specified time (after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity), but the Mac *+did not+* go to sleep even after waiting another 15 minutes beyond the specified time! I still have not tried booting with an unplugged USB keyboard/mouse...

  • Sudden, unexplained inability to sleep.

Starting yesterday, my iMac no longer will sleep when I command it to do so via Apple Menu or via Cmd-Opt-Eject keys. It slept when commanded daily for years until now.
It begins to sleep for 1 second & then comes back on. I am still able to “put display to sleep” with curser in one of the corners as I had set up. Last night I had done this & today the Mac WAS asleep. So apparently the setting to go to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity still works.
I read many posts on this & other related failure to sleep or stay asleep issues.
The difference with my issue is that I have no updates, new software or any changes made in the past few days. I read KB article HT1776.
I did the following to no avail; restarted, cold reboot, repair permissions, verify disk, & I deleted “com.apple.powerManagement.plist” from the HD/Library/preferences/System Configuration folder.
I do not use my Mac to receive faxes. I checked my System Preferences Energy Saving Preferences & none have changed. Wake for Network Access is unchecked. Put HD to sleep when possible is checked.
The only possible change I have done is to my APC UPS. I had a bad battery light & with APC tech support, I unplugged everything & did diagnostics on the UPS & then plugged everything back in (correctly) & the UPS is no longer showing bad battery & appears to be functioning normally. A new battery is being sent to me. My Mac software that monitors the UPS status in Menu bar shows 100% battery.
So, I don’t know why the change from sleep command working to not working.

Not all. Just printer & fax modem. I didn’t disconnect; Keyboard, XHD, Speakers, Router or UPS.
So, I tried d/c the USB to the APC/UPS since I just had trouble with that. Eureka! That was it. WIth no USB to the UPS connected -- I am again able to put it to sleep via the Apple menu. When I reconnect that UPS--it cannot sleep. My new battery should arrive tomorrow. When I replace the battery I’ll see if I can reconnect the UPS & if the same problem happens I will assume the APC UPS itself is bad. It must be doing something “new” to prevent sleep. I used it for 2 years, connected via USB with no sleep problems.
BTW, I still cannot induce sleep using Cmd-Opt-Eject keys. However, I had never tried the keyboard method until yesterday when I had the sleep problem & read all the sleep posts. So, that method may never have worked. It just starts to sleep for 1 second & then on again.
I suppose when a new problem occurs, it is useful to ask what is different or new related to my Mac -- however seemingly unrelated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • USB power failure-Freezes

I have a new Mac Pro bought in March of this year. Since then I"ve had several instances where my keyboard and mouse just stop working. Caps Lock won't light up. Mouse won't move. I'm using a wireless apple mouse with fresh batteries and when the keyboard loses power, it loses power. No typing can be done. I've unplugged the keyboard, waiting a few seconds and plugged it back in and still no power. The only movement I can make is shutting down an external USB drive and the error message will appear. I have to do a hard shut down and reboot and then the keyboard and mouse will work. On two occassions rebooting did not work. It took a second reboot. I have one USB SDHC card reader in the top front port. One iPod connected to the second front port and in the back I have the keyboard, one external wall powered USB enclosure and one Lexmark printer. All three back USB ports are used. My 2.8 gig Nahalem mac is running 7gigs of RAM as well. Not sure why the USB ports are just powering off but I'd love to acquire solutions to how to prevent it. When rendering or exporting it is a killer to have a computer freeze in the middle of that when deadlines are looming. Thanks

I found this. Maybe you can help decipher it.

  • Sleep only working via Apple Menu?

    Hi,
since today I have a very strange problem with my iMac: Sleep is only working through the apple menu. If I set up energy saver or press cmdshifteject, the computer won't sleep, only the display sleep will work (so the display switches off after the amount of time I set in energy saver, or if I press the keyboard shortcut the display turns off but the mac stays on)
Any ideas on this? It happens on all accounts, I already tried SMC and PRAM resets and disabled wake on lan and all sharings. I also trashed the PowerManagement.plist
It maybe helpful, that "pmset sleepnow" from terminal works fine. It seems that energy saver and the keyboard shortcut use another way to send the imac to sleep, which stopped working.
    ideas?

Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
More on sleep, some of which you tried.......
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update (10.6.4 Combo, etc.), disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
You can install it right over what you have now.
Many here have reported no wake from sleep or failure to sleep, running 10.6.3 on MacBooks, using Parallels and VMware. No solution yet.
    USER TIPS...
In System Preferences > Energy Saver is "Wake for network access" checked?
If so uncheck it and test.
Also, if you have an External Western Digital (WD) hard drive and have installed
WDDMService and WDSmartWareD on your Mac, it may not sleep. Fix is to un-install those....you don't need them to use the drive.
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
One provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
Also, here is Apple doc.#305262 about PCI cards and sleep.
After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
One noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"

  • Power off after putting iMac to Sleep

    Have you ever experienced this?
Put you iMac to Sleep and it powers down - not a shut down, but the power goes off - no blinking light, no whirring of the hard drive, no sign of life!
I have read and performed many of the tips regarding NVRAM, SMU, PMU, etc. resets. None have worked.
    Situation 1-
Use the 'sleep' command - moments after the machine powers off.
    Situation 2 -
iMac screen saver will run for a short time, then screen goes blank, the power light illuminates, the fan spins full speed, and the machine is totally unresponsive to mice clicks or movements, or keyboard entries.
    Situation 3 -
Sometimes upon power up, the iMac doesn't start, but you can hear a faint buzz sound from the back of the machine. Similar to audio hum.
These problems occur whether or not other devices are connected to the iMac.
    Connections-
Standard USB devices - mice, card reader,
    Bluetooth keyboard
    Ehternet
    Power Settings-
    Screen saver 5 minutes
Energy Saver - to sleep when inactive - 15 minutes, display to sleep - 15 minutes.
Various other settings tried with no change in problem.
I suspect the power supply. What's your opinion?

I began experiencing the same thing this week (two days ago). • My MacBook won't sleep and I'm forced to reboot...

For the past two weeks, every other time I close my MacBook it will either sleep or it will not sleep. When it won't sleep, the light on the apple turns off but the little indicator light stays on and I can hear the fans whirring. When it stays on instead of sleeping, the screen is frozen and black and I'm forced to turn the power off then turn it back on. I've tried a few things including taking the battery out and holding down the power button but nothing seems to be working. My nearest Apple approved service provider is about an hour away and I don't mind taking it but if I can fix it without making the drive that would be awesome. If there are some specific things you need to find out my computer let me know and I'll fill you in. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Failure to sleep can be caused by hardware or software. To troubleshoot the problem you'll want to make sure nothing is connected to the computer but the power adapter since a USB or FireWire device might be the cause. Your computer came with a hardware diagnostic disc - either it is part of your installation DVD or it is a separate disc. Boot up with that disc and let it run. If it shows a problem you know you need to make a trip to the shop. If not, we can't positively eliminate hardware but we'll move on.
You'll need to create a new user account, after which you should shut down the computer and then restart and log in directly to the new account. This will eliminate any start-up items that might be causing the problem as well as any munged preferences that might be the cause.
If the computer continues to show shutdown issues you'll want to look at: 1) 3rd party drivers such as all-in-one printers and scanners - uninstall, restart and try again, 2) RAM upgrades - remove and try again, 3) an OS reinstall (which I've saved for next to last), 4) computer hardware. If you get to the OS reinstall, I'd recommend that you fully back up the computer and then erase the hard drive, reinstall the OS, and immediately try sleeping the computer.
Shutdown and wakeup issues are the two problems I hate dealing with most.

  • MacBook freezes after shutting the screen closed down

Since some time ago, my MacBook freezes when I close the screen down for substantial time like a few hours or maybe even an hour, so that I have to kill the MB by pressing the power button for a few seconds. I did this almost everyday for maybe a few weeks now. Perhaps this is the after effects of a fall and there is no cheap cure for it?

Many here have reported no wake from sleep or failure to sleep, running 10.6.3 and other versions, on MacBooks and MBPro's, using Parallels and VMware. Some say deactivating the Sudden Motion Sensor and shutting down Parallels and VMware ,before sleeping, helped.

  • 10.5.2 Update fixes Leopard DVD burning issues!

I'd been having problems burning dvd's in leopard ever since i installed it, always had that "Power Calibration Error". I was able to burn discs in Bootcamp, so it was kinda obvious that the problem was in OS X. I've just completed installing 10.5.2 full update (341 MB) from Apple's website and I'm happy to say Apple has responded pretty well. I've burnt 5 Single Layer DVD's successfully. I have no dual layer ones lying around, so I'm not too sure about them.

  • When to dump Classic?

Seems like I never need the Classic environment anymore. Should I take it off my computer or is there some reason not to? And how do I dump it anyhow? (Aside: I have an ongoing problem of failure to sleep; sometimes takes 2-3 tries. Been working suggestions in forum for months, but no solution so far. Wondering if Classic 9 could have anything to do with this.)

OS 9 & it's applications probably don't take up much space on your HD, so you won't gain much. What size HD do you have & how much free space?
If you want to increase your free space, look at these links.
