Help - System Down
Environment:
HOST - Windows 2012 R2
PDC VM - Windows 2012 R2 VM
Terminal Server VM - Windows 2012 R2 VM
The system had been up 132 days and needed windows updates applying
The HOST and the Terminal Server VM updates applied and rebooted no problem.
On the PDC the updates appeared to have applied ok but on the PDC reboot I received the message ''Failure Configuring Windows Updates. Reverting Changes ......... "
The process then started but has been stuck at 8% for almost 2 hours.
What can I do?
It's 2:00am (New Zealand time) so off to bed in the hope it sorts itself out.
Any help appreciated!
PaulWhenever I got the same, I usually do a reset of Windows Update Components which always fixes my problems.
You can try it and the procedure is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

It is a production Read-Only Domain Controller. DC functionality is currently unaffected. Replication and diag all show 'green'
We have an internal WSUS server and there are currently 8 pending updates:

Security Update for Windows Server 2012 (KB3000061)
Update for Windows Server 2012 (KB3000988)
Regardless of whether I install them all at once or go through them one by one, upon reboot, I get the error message ""Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes". This box has previously had updates applied successfully however
the last successful update was prior to installing the ADDS role and promoting it to a RODC.

I have taken the following steps based on research without success:
Restarted the box - try again
Complete shutdown - try again
verified with my VMWare admins that there is no 'Secure Boot' or similar option set on the VM
Shutdown wuauserv, renamed SoftwareDistribution, started the service back up, reattempt
installed, but did not enable/configure, BitLocker Drive Encryption feature
sfc /scannow - no errors found
dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth and /scanhealth - neither found any issues
verified that the 'System Reserved Partition' is the correct size (350MB) and has free space (115MB)
deactivated the OS license, reactivated the OS license - no change
Pointed to the MS Windows Update servers instead of local WSUS
I have a little flexibility in how I repair this box. Given that DC functionality is unaffected and that this specific DC is not used heavily I want to try to repair it rather than wipe it out and rebuild it. I have not yet attempted to run updates on our
other, non-Read-Only DCs. If I run in to the same problem on them, I won't have as much leeway so I want to try to come up with a repair process if needed. I also have some concern regarding my ability to demote it from it's DC role given its current state.
There is nothing to indicate that that would also be a problem, but I would prefer to get it in working order before attempting a demotion.
Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My laptop (Lenovo Amd athlonII P360 dual-core processor) with OS windows 7 shutdown accidentally during updates. From then on I could log in to my system but it keeps popping up some error messages like....
tpsdsvc.exe-ordinal not found----ordinal 282 could not be located in dynamic link library iertutil.dll
concentr.exe--ordinal not found----ordinal 282 could not be located in dynamic link library iertutil.dll
AdobeARM.exe----ordinal not found----ordinal 282 could not be located in dynamic link library iertutil.dll
.Net EventWindow...MFManager.exe----ordinal not found----ordinal 282 could not be located in dynamic link library iertutil.dll
SLRuntime.exe---ordinal not found----ordinal 282 could not be located in dynamic link library iertutil.dll
IDVault.exe---ordinal not found----ordinal 282 could not be located in dynamic link library iertutil.dll
when I try to open IE browser..it pops up ieexplorer.exe------ordinal not found----ordinal 282 could not be located in dynamic link library iertutil.dll
My chrome browser stopped working...it opens but when I type any url...it just stays inactive...nothing happens
Even I'm unable to uninstall chrome through control panel. Nothing happens. I'm writing this through mozilla firefox. And even i cant update this browser. It says firefoxInstalle.exe---ordinal not found.
It always gives install update notification but when i try to install updates...it says failure to configure windows updates. reverting changes...
so far i tried sfc /scannow, restore points, safe mode, iertutil.dll file exists in c:/windows/system32...etc,.
I appreciate any solution on how to fix this problem and what is causing it?Hi sravy,
Would you please let me know whether refer to Susan’s suggestion and check if it may be a hardware/harddrive
issue? Any find?
à
My laptop (Lenovo Amd athlonII P360 dual-core processor) with OS windows 7 shutdown accidentally during updates.
Did you find any dump file after the Windows 7 crashed? If find dump file, please refer to following KB and
check if can help you to analyze the dump file.
How to read the small memory dump file that is created by
Windows if a crash occurs
In addition, as Susan said, this forum is for Small Business Server. Based on your description, your problem
was just occurred in Windows 7 OS. I suggest that you would post your question in
Windows 7 Forum. I believe we will get a better assistance there.
Hope this helps.

HP Ceement not working and continuous failure to update windows
I had a troouble with the screen and had it replaced to LED, and after that, it came into my notice that whenever I startup my system, the dialog box showing HP Ceement not working pops up. Also, there are options with check online for troubleshooting, but it did not work out when I tried it.
The another thing related with the issue (my guess only) is that, the original windows 7 home basic installed on the system is failing to get updated. the updates are identified and downloading also occurs. But, while installing, it always shows installation failed. This also seems to match approximately with the date in which I changed the display. So, is there any connection between the service done, and these two issues? and is there any way for me to rectify this?
I also should inform you guys, there is absolutely no other issue with the pc.
Thanks in advance,
DileepHello @Dileep008,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that HP CEEment is not working and continuously fails to update Windows on your notebook computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To rectify this situation, I recommend performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7). This should help return your system back to factory defaults.

Multiple failures after updates Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
After loading the latest set of updates for my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit operating system and rebooting, I am now experiencing a cascade of failures. None of my network (wireless or ethernet) adapter or miniport drivers
will load. my firewall will not load or has failed. I cannot logon to my Event Viewer to figure out what failed and my Microsoft NET is giving me errors when I try to access anything that might help me figure out what went wrong. So far I
have done a system restore back to before the update, but it did not fix the problems. I have tried to use Microsoft Fix it, but that must access the internet. I am sending this from a different computer because I cannot get online with the other.
Can anyone give me a clue where to start fixing these problems or do I have to completely reinstall my operating system?
Thanks.Hi,
In this case, you can try repairing windows image using DISM command.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824869.aspx
If it still can't work, please make a repair install to fix your system.

First time update windows 8 is fine after second time i get failure message to configuring
my tablet pc is ativ smart pc pro. first time I wanted to updat my tablet bios it stuck and i turn it off after that i reinstall windows everything was fine first time i update my windows and its done but for second time it shows me that " failure
update configuring, reverting changes" I dont know what to do. I restore my system to first day but again give me same error. last time i just restore windows and didnt install any program and start to update again i get same problem.Hi,
For your problem, firstly, I would like to suggest you contact Samsung to verify whether the BIOS upgrade would effect system ,
Secondly, if updates configuration failed, can you access into system? if so, please check which updates configure failed.
Thirdly, you can check WindowsUpdates log and CBS log to find the reason of this problem. if you had difficult to analyze these log, you can provide them to us.

I went to shut my pavillion touchsmart 14 down and it took about 30 minutes for it to say failure configuring windows updates reverting changes. Its been saying that for about 2 hours now. I have popped out the battery and held the power button down for 15 seconds and it still reverting changes. Anyone have any advice?
Hello @ArmyWife413, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that the notebook was doing some updates, that during this you received an error indicating that the updates failed to configure. I will try to assist you with this.
Here is a Microsoft document on the issue: "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" error when y....
I would like you to start by following that document and the steps that they have provided.
Please let me know how this goes for you.
Thank you for posting on the HP forums.

Error while Updating "Failure configuring Windows updates - Reverting changes"
I've recently formatted my HP ENVY 15t-3200 CTO Notebook PC.
When I'm updating the PC the Error of "Failure configuring Windows updates - Reverting changes - Do not turn off your computer" triggers on screen when the PC restarts after installing the Updates.
It takes hours to revert the changes.........
Pls. help me out as I can't update my PC to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 Pro.
I've also tried to resolve the issue by searching on the vrious websites but the issue has not been resolved yet.
ThanksHi,
Try the following.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt.
Type in ( or just copy and paste ) the following command ( including spaces ) and hit enter.
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
This will take a while to complete, but when it’s finished, restart the notebook.
Let windows fully load, then once again, open an elevated command prompt, then enter the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Restart the notebook then try upgrading to 8.1 again.
Regards,
DP-K

Stuck in "Failure configuring Windows Updates: reverting changes" loading loop
I just bought a new Asus notebook with Windows 8 today. I wanted to upgrade to Windows 8.1, so I had to first go through with all other updates. When the minor updates got to 98% the computer changed to the "Failure Configuring Windows Updates Reverting
Changes" screen. It has been on this same loading screen for several hours now. I have tried restarting the computer multiple times. I have looked up several troubleshooting videos and guides, but everyone else seems to have been able to leave the loading
screen and fix the problem in the actual working computer. I am still stuck in the loading... loading... loading screen. What do I do to get back to the home page? Or anything just to fix the problem.Kayla,
Thank you a 100 times! Being hooked through a modem to my network, as opposed to a direct link, was EXACTLY the problem.
After wasting 2 hours in the other sections of this forum through numerous threads of the same issues (with the same cut and paste answers by support engineers) it was just that simple. Bam! 5 minutes all better.
What alarms me is that not one of the dozens of posts i read through did an Engineer ever ask if they were hooked through wifi or a router. Even Dell's hideous support center will go through the basics first before launching into the hoop jumping.
Again bless you. If I could I'd buy you a drink, or cookies, whichever you prefer :) -
Satellite C875 : Windows reverting changes after update to Windows 8.1
For days now with no success, I have been trying to update from Windows 8 (64 bits) to Windows 8.1 a Satellite C875-153 (PSCBCE-03H002FR)
I am opening a new thread as none of the available threads on this forum have helped me nor my researched on the web.
*1st error* - which I was able to "sort of" figure out is:
-> *Windows 8.1 update fails with error message 0xC1900101 - 0x30018*
I have followed every steps, in the proper order, of this Toshiba guide, but it didn't help fixing the error:
http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/
I then followed recommendation from this thread and was "temporaly" able to update OS to Win 8.1:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=296594
The step that worked for me was to remove network cable while installing windows 8.1 as suggested by user "RandyRoberts".
*2nd error:*
*-> Windows 8.1 hangs and system tried to revert changes back to Windows 8*
By unplugging the network cable, I was able to complete the update of Windows 8.1 and run it temporaly.
As soon as I replug the network cable and reconnect to the web, the computer hangs and restarts.
I suppose Windows 8.1 is trying to check the licence status and then refuse to activate it.
Windows ends up trying to revert changes and go back to Windows 8.
It hangs at restart and refuses to reload previous OS (Windows 8), leaving me on a screen with couple options. At this point I can only recover the factory image to be able to restart the system.
These steps have been performed on a freshly reinstalled OS with no additionnal softwares.
All updates and steps have been followed and recheck several times. I am runnning last BIOS available.
I have already saved all my data and burned the recovery disks .
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.Hi GROM
I guess you found and read also this thread:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=74631
the user harrie_1 were able to update to the Win 8.1 and the update procedure went smoothly.
I dont know exactly why this workaround did not function in your case but I would recommend you to start the procedure once again and follow the update as described by harrie_1 user -

I just tried to install 20 updates and it got to 98% complete then suddenly started reverting changes.
I've never had any trouble installing updates on this machine before but it's new.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance.

Failure configuring windows updates
I have an HP 2000 Notebook PC i believe it is called. Last night, i decided to update it. When i woke up, it was only 7 out of 36 updates finished. It took all day to complete, but once it did, it said "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes Do not turn off your computer." It has restarted countless times and been stuck like this for hours.

I can system restore or refresh install, but after updating, same issue.Sometimes Windows update got some priority for programs,
make sure some programs you should install in advance.
