Faint but regular clicks/pops in MBP (Quad Core 2011, 2.0) headphone output

I've seen some scattered posts about this. In my case it's definitely not the motion sensor as it happens if the computer is totally still. I can hear it with the audio turned all the way down and no applications running. It happens every 30 seconds or so-- there's a sharp click followed by a faint electrostatic hum for maybe a second or so. I'm sending it in to have it evaluated. I noticed it immediately upon setting it up for the first time. I reinstalled Snow Leopard and reset the PRAM, neither of which helped. If I install one of my audio interfaces (Saffire DSP Pro or M-Audio FW 410 but still using the Core Audio driver) it does not pass through the firewire to the device. Anyone else having this issue? My old MBP (first gen 2.0 GHz Intel w/CoreDuo) does not display this symptom.

Took my MBP into the Genius Bar and got a replacement and the new machine (out of the box and running Lion, whereas the first one was among the last to ship with SL) behaves identically. I'm wondering if this is a feature, as I'm just now realizing that what I'm hearing may be the audio driver or headphone jack periodically switching on and off. I can make the click happen by doing anything that calls on the core audio driver. This may be clicking on a song in iTunes or even switching between tabs in Firefox if one of them has a lot of streaming content. The click is followed by a little bit of hiss; then, if I do nothing, there's another click maybe 30 seconds later and the headphone port goes completely silent. The 'hiss' is, I suspect, just the normal background noise on the output. When there's actual sound being output (a song, flash video, QT playback etc) there are no clicks or other artifacts. Likewise if I listen to the headphone output for 10-15 mins while doing nothing else (big fun, let me tell you).
If that's what's happening it's an annoyance but not the end of the world. I can't think of a good reason why it should behave like this (i.e. to save power or otherwise redirect resources) and it reeks of crappy hardware or coding, but if it's not affecting the actual headphone or firewire audio output when sound is happening I can live with it.
I could be totally off the mark and for all I know tomorrow it could be doing the above and clicking randomly during audio playback. Curious to know if anyone else who is having this symptom sees the same pattern.
Cheers.

  • Intel quad core i7 2.6 vs 2.7 GHz

    hello,
I would like to buy a macbook pro, but now I doubt which intel quad core I should choose.
Is there a noticeable difference between the 2.6 and 2.7 GHz?

the only time you'll see a difference between the 2.6GHz and 2.7GHz if you're using benchmarking software which most are sythetic and not real world conditons (what we'll use it for).
In paper, the difference of the 2.6GHz level 3 cache memory at 6MB and the 2.7GHz level 3 cache memory at 8MB looks good.  In reality, you will not see a difference or benefits going with the 2.7GHz.
suggestion - if you're buying a NON-Retina Macbook Pro get the 2.6GHz and use the money you save to buy either a 16GB of RAM or a SSD drive.
    good luck

Recently my mac has started making faint clicking noises just like a fan catching against something, it is only faint but loud enough to hear. any suggestions please

While it could be a cooling fan, a noise like that is usually a sign of a dying hard drive. Back up everything immediately. Make immediate backups of any new documents you create after the full backup.

It's probably the MacDefender scareware trojan horse. If you have this here is how to remove it.
    1. Open Activity Monitor look for MacDefender process double click on it and hit quit or force quit.
    2. Go to System Preferences, Go to accounts, Go to login items look for anything related to MacDefender hightlight it by clcking on it once. Then hit the minus sign to remove it.
    3. Go to applications folder and drag MacDefender to the trash.
    4. Open finder and do a search for Macdefender and remove anything you see related to MacDefender.
    5. Open Spotlight (the little magnyfing glass in the menubar far right corner) and do a search for MacDefender.
    6. Restart your computer and empty trash.
    7. If you feel you need to have virus protection for your Mac use ClamXav. It's the recommended AV program for MacOSX. Hope this helps.

  • I cant figure out what is slowing down my mbp i7 quad core. Help?!

This is a used machine I bought off CL. Upgraded to 10.8.3 and upgraded RAM to 8 gb. Has been wrking great. Suddenly delay between input and output. I click wait then it responds.....like a pc.....same with typing or any other comand and constant pinwheeling. closed all applications cleaned all temp caches. Used onyx to do its magic. All to no avail. My hard drive is at 290 of 500 gb.....my old intell core duo 2009 w 4gb ram is whirring along running all the same software. Its HD is at the same ratio.
Please help this is a mid 2012 15inch MBP i7 quad core. What could be slowing it down?

You'll have to backup only user files to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
Then hold command r keys down and reboot the machine, use Disk Uility Erase on the Macintosh HD and move the slider one spot to the right, then click erase, this will Zero Erase the entire partition, takes hours, but let it complete.
Then quit and reinstall OS X fresh with your AppleID and password/update and install your software, then last add files back, do a scan using the free ClamXav just in case.
If you still have problems, do a extended Hardware Check, should check the RAM and replace with the original and see if the problem goes away.

  • Clicks/Pops Between Songs

Using a 5th generation 60 gig ipod with itunes 7.0 on Windows XP. When I listen to songs hooked up to an Altec-Lansing Inmotion speaker system, I can hear faint but noticeable pops/clicks between songs. I hooked a family member's ipod up to my speakers and do not hear the clicks. I do not hear them on mine when using headphones. Any suggestions?

    bump
And another question- I notice that my cross fade playback was checked and the bar was set exactly in the middle. Could this be the cause of what I'm exerpiencing? And does that option only effect songs as they are ripped from the CD, or if I uncheck the box will it also effect the ones already stored on the ipod?

  • Audio question, clicking/popping when adjusting volume?

    Hi all,
I returned my last touch because of loud hissing when headphones are plugged in. I notice it on higher quality headphones. when i move the volume slider i also hear this clicking/popping noise. Does anyone else hear that when they move the volume slider up and down or is an indication of a problem? it almost sounds like a poor sound effect. any thoughts would be helpful.
be sure to pause the music/movie when testing...

^^^ same here, no hissing but faint pops when adjusting the volume when a song is on pause in the 3/4 to full volume range. Never noticed it until I saw this thread though.

  • Audio clicks/pops since Mavericks upgrade

Ever since the upgrade to OSX 10.9, I've been experiencing frequent clicks/pops in MainStage 3's output with the same buffer/processor core settings as before.  What's strange is that the CPU doesn't seem to be spiking at all, and there isn't anything else taxing the computer.  Higher buffer settings help a little bit, but even at a level of 256 samples I'm still getting more degraded output as compared to Mountain Lion.  It doesn't seem to be plugin-specific... the problem is present in Apple's AU's as well as third-party plugins like Kontakt and Ivory II.  Using standalone instruments outside of MainStage doesn't produce the same clicks/pops, even at lower buffer settings.  I'm not using an external sound card/interface.
    Things I've tried:
-Different buffer settings, as mentioned above - using MainStage 3 before the upgrade at 64 samples (with safety buffer) was great
-Removed MainStage as well as the associated preference files and reinstalled
-Created new concerts/patches rather than using preexisting ones
Any suggestions?  My last resort would be trying a clean install of Mavericks or reverting to Mountain Lion, but I don't really have a strong desire to do either of those... Thanks in advance for your help!
HW: 2012 MBP Retina at 2.6 GHz
SW : OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks, MainStage 3.0.2 using Kontakt 5, XLN Addictive Keys, Ivory II

I just upgraded to Maverick 10.9.2 recently . I tested the latest version of Mainstage after reading this post to see if I might encounter the same problem .
After spending 30 minutes with Mainstage , there's hasen't been any clicks or pops whatsoever .
The buffer size is 128 samples .
I also am using ONLY Logic soft synths . No 3rd party in my concerts . (  for now anyways )
Just wondering if the problems that you have been running into might be caused by the use of 3rd party plugs .
I am using a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 as class compliant USB 2 audio interface with buitl in midi .
I had to update the firmware of the audio card because of Maverick to avoid audio dropouts . That also solved a potential problem .

  • IPod suddenly no longer connects to any computer, hangs and clicks/pops

I recently (within the last two weeks) started using a program called PodUtil ( http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php ) to manage my music library between my work and home computers. Everything seems to have gone off without a hitch, but as of Friday my iPod started behaving very strangely.
I was playing a song on it through iTunes on my work computer when all of the sudden the song cut out and iTunes froze up. I was forced to disconnect my iPod manually without disconnecting it through the computer, and when I hooked it back up my entire system locked up until the iPod was once again removed. I plugged it in again and left the system alone and finally fifteen minutes later I got an error message saying that an iPod was detected but the iPod software wasn't installed. Despite this not being true, I uninstalled iTunes and the iPod software, reinstalled them, and finally the iPod worked correctly.
Until I brought it home and plugged it into my home computer and the exact same problem occurred. I once again uninstalled iTunes and the iPod software but this time it didn't fix the problem. The iPod refuses to connect now to any of the computers I've tried it on (home, work, my roommate's PC and even a work mac) and every time it's plugged in the system hangs until it's disconnected. I have also noticed that when it's plugged in every few minutes there's a loud hum and a clicking/popping sound that reminds me of drive heads failing on a harddrive.
The iPod itself works fine, I can play everything and it gives me absolutely no trouble. It's when I connect it to a computer that the problems begin.
I'm at a loss for what to do. I've tried every single thing under the knowledge base including rebooting and reinstalling and nothing's helped. It almost seems like there's a physical problem with the iPod (from the clicking sound) but the clicks never happen during normal operation and I haven't dropped it or anything that would've broken it. It's out of warranty and I'd rather not pay the cost of a new iPod to get this one fixed. Furthermore I took my songs off of my computer to free up space and the last music backup I have isn't entirely recent. But I can't even get it to restore even if I wanted to because it doesn't respond when it's connected. Any help will be great. Thanks!

    - Try another cable. iOS 7 made the iPod/computer more sensiteve to cable problems
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.
