Faint horizontal stripes across 2/3 of screen

Hello all,
I have a LED-backlit macbook pro with the nvidia 8600 GT. I am experiencing a very faint (barely noticeable) horizontal striping (looks almost like the pinstripes) covering the upper left 2/3 or so of my screen. My question is if this is an issue with the display or the video card? When plugged into an external monitor in mirroring or dual display, I can't see the same striping on the external screen. Tried resetting pram, login as a different user, to no avail.

An update: some sections of the display will flicker/flash when I press in the right side display bezel. I have read that this is indicative of a loose connection on the display cable?

  • TS3274 Am getting an opaque strip across the bottom of screen for the last two days.....how can I get rid of this?

Am getting an opaque strip about 1inch wide across bottom of home screen for the last two days.  How can I clear this please?

Have you maybe removed all the apps from the dock? the dock is the strip that remains constant and shows the apps that you place there across all sprinboard pages.

  • Left two thirds of my iPAD 1 screen black with faint horizontal stripes.

I have tried reset but no change.  Black area still responds to touch but typing blind! Any ideas?

also, as i mentioned, if i try to turn the ipad on immediately, it will show the fuzzy bars but if i wait like 30 seconds to a minute and try to turn it back on, the screen is normal...
what could possibly be the reason for this? i mean, it should either work or it shouldnt, right?

  • My MacBook Pro having problem that having orange horizontal stripes over the boot login screen and couldn't get into OS!! Please help!!

I'm having this issues suddenly where I wake up and turn on my MacBook Pro and pooofff, it happens.. Anybody tell me what happens and any solution can be made??
Got no idea why the image flipped upside down.. = =

It looks like that the installation process of one of the applications have caused some trouble. One of them may have changed or added kext files.
For that, the Window server crashed if you try to open a non Apple application like Firefox
Start the system in safe mode by holding the shift key on power on.
If save mode is reached, perform a permissions repair with the Disk Utility.
Don't bother about upcoming warnings like "could not repair file xy" as that occur cause you use the tool on a running system and opened files can not get touched by the tool.
After repair is done reboot system to normal and try to open Firefox.
If the problem persits, please report back here.

  • Horizontal stripes flickering all over the display?

    Dear Apple Users,
    I have a macbook pro 15 late 2008 unibody.
I have two videocards in it 9400 and the 9600.
I do have screen problems there are horizontal stripes flickering all over the screen.
They do get more visible when i have dark background.
These stripes arent even staying for a second they come and go and are hardly visible.
I do have apple care i just brought my macbook to apple they have replaced the display (im very thankfull)
But the problem still not solved it is conned to a apple cinema display 30 and now the stripes are also visible on my cinema display.
Is anyone familair with this problem? Could it be my videocard? Or something else?
    Kind Regards,
    OG

I doubt that you have a software 'bug' - looks more as if you're having a problem either with the GPU, the screen or the connection between the two.
Since you're still under warranty, I would advise that you take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them diagnose and fix the problem. I don't believe that it's anything that can be remedied via software.

  • Faint horizontal lines accross iMac lcd

Had a 24" iMac that developed faint horizontal lines across the lcd that got progressively darker the longer the computer was on. Had the lcd replaced by Apple twice, but after a couple of weeks the problem returned. They gave me a new iMac, but a month in I have the same problem with the new machine. Has anyone encountered this problem? Is it an inherent issue with iMac lcds or is it something external affecting my machine? And I'm not talking poltergeist. Help, want this fixed.

We have a 20" imac Core Duo that was purchased summer 2006 - then about 5 or 6 months ago, it started developing horizontal lines across applications (Safari, Mail, etc) and the desktop - sometimes they would go away, sometimes not... I thought is was some video driver conflicting, upgraded to snow leopard, went to the genius bar, etc... but lately it got worse to the point that it started locking up every day... this after going weeks or months without a reboot and over 3 years having almost zero crashes...
I read in a forum where the video chip (GPU - graphics processing unit) was heat sensitive and thought that after 3+ years, maybe it was dusty in there... I installed the iStat widget to monitor the temp of the GPU and installed a fan control (software) where you can increase the minimum speed of the hard drive fan (allegedly located above the GPU). I also put the end of the vacuum on the fan vent just above where the power cord goes into the back of the monitor and let it run for a while hoping to clean things out...
5 days later - zero display issues, zero hangs and zero crashes - and the GPU runs an average of 25 degrees cooler than before. This after a genius bar guy told me that it probably needs a new display board. Good Luck!

  • MacBook Pro only boots in safe mode with pink vertical stripes across screen.

So on Friday night I was using Chrome on my MacBook Pro, when all of a sudden little squares of light flashed randomly across the whole screen and everything but the mouse froze. I thought that was weird, so after a few minutes I forced my computer to shutdown. I waited a little and then turned it back on, and opened Chrome again. The same thing happened again, so I forced shut down, backed up Time Machine and ran a virus scan. Nothing came up, so I put it to sleep and and went to bed.  Then Saturday morning I went to open my laptop and it was off, which was weird, so I went to turn it on. After the apple logo and spinning gear went away, it booted to a light blue screen and stayed there. Again I waited and nothing happened, so I held the power button down until it turned off. I tried again but the same thing happened, so I booted in Safe Mode.
This time there were inch long vertical bars of horizontal lines, kind of confusing but here are two pictures I took of the screen that hopefully help. http://imgur.com/oj2WbZL and http://imgur.com/O1hwJ1B . When it finally loaded I had another issue, I had 6 pink vertical bars across the screen and a box of pink horizontal stripes around my pointer, http://imgur.com/BJBzu74 . I performed an extended Apple Hardware Test and after 17 minutes it found no issues, and as it performed the test the lines got whiter and made the screen harder to see http://imgur.com/XahBD3s .
I got my laptop June 2011, so it's not that old. I just want to know what this problem could be. I don't know if it's the connection from the screen to the computer, the hard drive, the logic board or something else. I'm really worried that it's something major, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

This is a GPU problem. It's normal that you see that the problem is random, but the fact that your Mac is only starting up in safe mode indicates that your Mac can only start up if the VGA driver is used. Moreover, if you open Console, you should start seeing "GPU Debug Info Start", which indicates a GPU failure.
As you have a backup, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the GPU is soldered onto the logic board, so the whole logic board has to be replaced, being a very expensive repair.

  • Thin Horizontal Line Across Screen

I've had them before and they disappeared spontaneosly. The latest one seems to want to hang around. Any idea how to get rid of it?

This is a followup to my post earlier today. A web search on "Thin Horizontal Line Across Screen" turned up this article:
    http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/post24947-5.html
Sure enough, my horizontal line came back. I decided to follow the advice in the linked article. I didn't even have to twist the monitor. I barely tapped the screen as I was reaching up to twist the panel, and the line disappeared. This suggests to me that the problem is a loose internal connection between the driver circuitry and the panel.

  • Is someone with iMac 2010 users  have problems with the monitor. I mean horizontal  stripes and dark screen ?

Is someone with iMac 2010 users  have problems with the monitor. I mean horizontal  stripes and dark screen ?

Mine's a late '09, but there have been display issues with iMacs.
Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • What do red horizontal stripes on the boot screen mean?

I occasionally see when I boot, as of about 2 days ago. My MacBookPro8,2 is on the fritz. The other major problem is that attempting to enter Time Machine crashes the entire machine (spinning beach ball of death, all inputs to the computer are non-responsive). If I get the computer to boot trying to "Back Up Now" results in something to the effect of: "The backup disk image <timemachineimage> is already in use." even though that's definitely flase (I'm on a closed network with just this 1 machine, no other users, a Synology doing TimeMachine protocol, and both the MacBookPro and Synology are freshly booted and able to see each other no problem.).
Anyway, all that info was just to describe anything I thought might be connected, but my question is just "what do red horizontal stripes at the apple boot logo mean?"
    Thanks!

Unfortunately after a few days the problem is still happening. It also impacts my external displays, both when in "extend my display" mode (meaning primary screen is open, external plugged in via Thunderbolt, booted from cold stop), and when in "external display only" mode (meaning as soon as I press the power button I close the primary display, so the boot apple logo happens on the external display).

  • I have a straight horizontal line across my screen

    Hi Folks
have a straight horizontal line across my screen. Can assist?

Yes, move the screen slowly back and forth, if it changes, you have a damaged monitor feed cable
Does it appear in all screens?
Does it vanish from time to time?
post a pic,   hook your AIr up to an external monitor, if its there, its GPU /logic problem
if its gone, its as mentioned a bad monitor feed from the logic via the cable.
    perform SMC reset and re-verify
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Contact Apple for an appt. for in shop diagnostics and likely repair.

  • I have a horizontal line across the bottom of my screen how do I remove it?

Re: Macbook Air mid 2011, I have a horizontal line across the bottom of my screen, it appeared when I was updating my iPhone, How can I remove this line from my display?

It may be a GPU or display issue. In both cases, make a backup of your Mac and take it to an Apple Store or reseller to get it repaired.
To check whether it is a GPU or display issue, try taking a screenshot by pressing Command, Shift and 3 keys. The screenshot will appear in the Desktop, so open it and check if the line appears in the screenshot too. If so, it is a GPU issue; if not, it is a display issue.
