Fake Adobe update, now I have a virus

Menu popped up to update Adobe player. Not paying attention I clicked on it, now I have a virus that sometimes interfere with all kinds of actions.

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.

  • I downloaded an adobe update, now the stuff I download from e-mails that I want on my desktop

I downloaded an update from Adobe. Now when I get an e-mail, like an offer or counter offer and I want it to download to my desktop, it won't do it.  It puts it somewhere else! very frustating.  All my PDF files now have changed to Adobe.  How do I put stuff back the way I had it.  I should have never downloaded the update. What is your operating system?  What is your email client?  What is your Reader version?
What do you want to place on your desktop, the email message, or the attachment?

Sorry, I have no idea what that means.

  • Adobe update seems to have crashed my computer

Help!! I just downloaded what appeared to be an update for Adobe FlashPlayer which has crashed my computer. On restart, I now get a black screen with white techno-speak and a cursor. Any thoughts gratefully received.

    Thank you for your response!
I tried the Safe Boot and it didn't work. (Except I did see the purple-spacey background at the log-in screen, which felt like a bit of an improvement)
I'm trying to repair disk permissions, but I'm not sure if it's doing anything or if it's just frozen. Does that usually take awhile?
Right now I'm just trying to get as much of my important stuff onto my harddrive as possible and then re-install the OS.
A bit of a different question, but this is my first Mac and it's been a nightmare, and any other Mac owner says that the problems I've been having with it aren't typical (freezes a lot, won't eject disks, won't wake up sometimes, runs really slowly when I change the resolution, runs pretty slowly if I have a few programs open, and now this), so if anyone else has gotten a dud Mac before, did you find that reformatting it helped, or did you have to take it to the Apple store and get it fixed?

  • My iPhone 4 was disconnected during ios 5 update - now i have error -50 showing and cannot get phone back on. Help!

during IOS5 update my phone was disconnected from itunes. i reconnected it and continued the update by clicking 'continue restore'. Itunes is now saying the the phone is updated to version 5 and appears to have fully synced. however, when i turned the phone back on i have the set-up screen and when i select to restore the phone through itunes i get a message with options to 'continue restore' or 'delete backup'. when i select 'continue restore' itunes then gives me an 'error -50' message and just syncs the phone but nothing seems to happen - the phone does not do anything.
Should i delete the back up and start over, or will that delete all my contacts?
    Any help is much appreciated!

    Everything is Sorted!
The release of iTunes 11.0.2 and iOS 6.1.2 for my iPhone 4, seems to have sorted everything. I can now sync music, films and photos between my MacBook and my phone.
I was dubious about blindly doing the updates but decided they couldn't really mess up any further functionality so I went for it and it's sorted now.
Look in to, and take the gamble, it's up to you.

  • Most Adobe updates now cause severe problems

I have used computers for many years and am well aware of their vulnerabilities.
However, due to the repeated destabilising results of Updating Adobe products on numerous computers, I will no longer update ANY Adobe product and will seek alternatives.
My latest update was to Flash Player 10. This resulted in BSODs every time on two fairly new and very stable computers.
Another reason to dislike Adobe is their insistence on Installing what THEY want on MY computer, such as AIR.
Surely there must be a more stable alternative than Adobe that allows us to watch video?
    Does anyone have any advice?

Hi 123noodles,  As you can see there are many threads on the Flash Player Forum. Anyone wishing help with whatever issue regarding Flash Player always needs to provide their computer and browser info and a brief description of their issue.
I think it's best not to offer solutions before knowing what the issues are. That is called guessing, in my opinion.
If you would like help, please provide the information.
    Thanks,

  • Updated mac book from 10.4 to 10.6, downloaded updates, now just have blank screen

Updated Mac Book (intel) from 10.4 to 10.6.3 using Mac Box set.  This worked.  Downloaded software updates from "software update", installation failed, restarted computer and now have only the 1st white screen with the wheel going round - cant do anything!

You could try some basic troubleshooting, and if that doesn't work, you could always do a complete uninstall / reinstall.
For basic troubleshooting, try throwing out *all* GB preference files from the preference folder. Also, I'd try tossing any GB files in the cache folder. Then, rebuild disk permissions using disk utility.

  • 10.9.3 updated - now i have graphics issues

I just updated my mid 2011 mac mini with the radeon hd 6630M graphics to 10.9.3.  Now, the text and images on screen is nowhere near as crisp as it used to be (preupdate).  It looks like someone made everything "grainy".  Text is blurry and it looks like rainbows are running along the menu bar.  The shadow from the windows creates white lines running parallel to window on top.
I am using a 24" samsung HD monitor at 1920x1200 (letting osx choose).  I ran the color calibration to no avail.  This was not an issue before the update and there were no issues during the update.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks

The magical turn it off and turn it back solution worked....Im still curious as to what caused it?  Any ideas??

    Hi all!!
After the 10.9.3 update on my early mac pro 2008 with upgraded ATI 5770 with 1024MB
my computer would not wake from sleep so
    1. I did the 10.9.3 complete update and that did not work so
    2.  I searched for someting and only came up with this  from Cna93and IT WORKED, my computer now wakes from sleep, I just hope it keeps on working now.
Apple you need beta testers that actually USE YOUR COMPUTERS!!!!!!

  • Update now i have lines in my screen

This is the second or third time this has happened to me. I will download updates and on restart my screen has lines running through it. *** over?Restarting didnt help.

I have a similar problem. I can not relate it to upgrades, however. The lines The lines start on opposite sides of the screen and never go completely across. In an application window the lion will go completely across. They will occasionally appear in an application window. If I magnify the screen I can see that they are a combination of possibly pixilated colors.
Does this mean there is a problem with the video driver?

  • My admin status has been changed to standard after the yosemite software update, now i have no admin and can't tso anything as before doing anything it asks for admin username and password, which i don't know as there is no admin!

admin status changed to standard, currently no admin, what to do!?

Please take these steps to restore administrator privileges to your account. This somewhat tedious procedure is only necessary if you've confirmed that no administrator account exists on the system.
If you don't already have a current backup of all your data, you must back up before taking any of the steps below. Ask if you need guidance. You won't need the backup unless something goes wrong—which is always possible.
    Step 1
Start up in Recovery mode. The OS X Utilities screen will appear.
    Step 2
Take this step only if you use FileVault 2. Launch Disk Utility, then select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the  Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
    Step 3
    Select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Select your startup volume if not already selected. Pull down the menu labeled
              Select the user account
    and select
              System Administrator (root)
Follow the prompts to set a password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9. I suggest you write down the password. If you don't write it down and forget it, you'll have to start over from Step 1.
    Select
               ▹ Restart...
    from the menu bar.
    Step 4
This step, like Step 2, applies only if you use FileVault. Log in as usual, then select
               ▹ Log Out...
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-Q. Don't restart. You'll be returned to the login screen.
    Step 5
At the login screen, click Other... Enter "root" (without the quotes) in the Name field, and enter the password you set in Step 3 in the Password field. You should now be logged in as root. This is a potentially dangerous condition. Do nothing while logged in as root except as indicated below. You'll be fine as long as you don't deviate from the plan.
Open the Users & Groups preference pane. Select your usual administrator account in the list of users and check the box marked
Allow user to administer this computer
You'll be prompted to restart. Do that and log in as yourself—not as root. Your administrator status should now be restored.
    Step 6 (optional, but recommended)
Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Disable the root user." You must authenticate in Directory Utility as "root" with the password you set in Step 3. Authenticating as another administrator won't work.
