Fake desktop (so I can store information in it)?

Hi All,
I'd really like to have a desktop like space (maybe one that I can toggle to somehow) where I can store current projects that I am working on. I find it really a bump in the road to have to look at these in a normal Finder window.
At the same time about a year into moving to mac, I realized that my MacPro slows to a crawl (literally) when I put too much data on the desktop.
Is there a really easy way to do this? If it involves Expose or Spaces can anyone point me to a down and dirty explanation to get this going?
Thanks
Jonathan

Hi Thomas.
Thanks for the help.
Can you help me with what you mean by too many open windows? I'm coming from a PC environment and my MacPro has in the past "churned" (the hard drive sounds like it is being read) and I think I finally isolated this to folders on the desktop with a large amount of information.
You are saying that the /amount/ of information or the amount of files in a folder on the desktop is not an issue it is the /number/ of folders - because these are open windows?
What is the issue with open windows on Mac?
Also, does this also apply to open software? I mean, at what point do I start to think about closing software? Say I have Pages, Numbers, Safari and four or five other software open. Is this an issue?
Lastly, I have a hard time understanding how this all works. Can you explain it a little more? I can't figure out if you are talking just plain old Finder windows here or if you are using something special. "Project based folders that can be open in each relevant space..."? What is the relevant space? I'm a little confused on how to rethink all this...
but you may also wish to have project-based folders that can be open in each relevant space so that items for the project you're working on are all filed away in the right place as you work on them. My personal work style usually involves two windows in column view, tiled one above the other. This allows very quick access to what I need as well as access to one side of the desktop for a short-term repository for things that are temporary or that I haven't figured out where to file.
Thanks again...

  • Store information on security place

    Hello All,
    I'm using some dbms_crypto for encypt/decrypt data with following code:
    create or replace FUNCTION sec_return_encrypted_data(data IN VARCHAR) RETURN RAW IS
        key VARCHAR(16) := 'A1B2C3D4E5F6G7H8';
        encryption_mode NUMBER := DBMS_CRYPTO.ENCRYPT_AES128 + DBMS_CRYPTO.CHAIN_CBC  + DBMS_CRYPTO.PAD_PKCS5;
        BEGIN
             RETURN DBMS_CRYPTO.ENCRYPT(UTL_I18N.STRING_TO_RAW (data, 'AL32UTF8'),
               encryption_mode, UTL_I18N.STRING_TO_RAW(key, 'AL32UTF8') );
        END;
    There is some variable, which is key. I need to store it some security place. How and where to store?
    Because it not visible for developers.
    Any idea and solution?

    If you know what browser cookies are, you can think of flash player local storage as the same sort of thing. That is, some storage space on your computer where a website can store information until it needs it, milliseconds or weeks later. As with cookies (or pretty much any tool), flash local storage can be used for helpful or harmful purposes.
    Because there are people in the world who use flash local storage for harmful purposes (as they were already using cookies), and because flash local storage is more difficult for people to find and remove, Safari now asks you for permission before it allows a website to use it. This is the message you are seeing.
    As for how to get rid of the message, there are several possibilities, depending on what you want Safari to do instead of asking. You could just turn off Flash entirely, but then you may lose some web content you want. You can install a flash-blocker like ClickToFlash, which allows you to choose which Flash content you want to see, but you may still see that message with flash content you choose to display.
    I run a flash blocker, so I cannot advise you on what to do if you choose to leave Flash unblocked. There are probabably ways to set a default "allow" or "disallow"; I leave that discussion to others.

    Hi, I am new to iPhone and downloaded a app from the app store and had my iPhone connected to my computer but I just cant find the app on my phone I'v checked on the desktop and the app store but it is nowhere...can somebody point me in the right direction plzzzzz

    If your iPhone is not recognized by iTunes when connected - not available under Devices in the iTunes source list, check this link.

    For voice memos, I have include voice memos when syncing selected under the Music tab for my iPhone sync preferences with iTunes which transfers voice memos from my iPhone to my iTunes library when syncing.

  • A friend of my daughter's used my mac when she got her new iphone.  Now I have a new iphone and my phone has her app store information on it and I don't know how to get it off and put mine in there!

    A friend of my daughter's used my mac computer when she got her new iphone to help set it up.  Now that I have a new iphone, her apps and all the app store information is stuck on my phone.  Her app account keeps showing up when I try to install something new, and I obviously do not have her password.  How do I get this off my phone??

    Open iTunes on the computer.  Without any iPhone plugged in, go to iTunes' menu and do Store > Sign Out.
    The click the iTunes Store row on the left of the iTunes display.  You can then sign on from the signon row on the right side of the display using the correct Apple ID and password.  Then you'll be all set!

  • [Forum FAQ] Go to Start Screen/Desktop when closing Windows Store App

    After install Windows 8.1 Update 1, you will notice these things set by default even on touchscreen laptops and desktops:
    Windows 8.1 now boots directly to the desktop.
    Closing Windows Store Apps and go to desktop instead of Start Screen.
    Besides option “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start” since Windows 8, another new option in Taskbar Properties “Show Windows Store app on taskbar” is used to control closing app behavior.
    Features of "Show Windows Store app on taskbar"
    When the setting is checked, all of the Windows Store apps that are currently running will display on taskbar. You can easily switch between Windows Store apps and your desktop and its applications through the taskbar. For mouse users,
    you can also access the taskbar within a Windows Store app. Just move the mouse cursor to the button of the screen, the taskbar pops up.
    When the setting is unchecked,
    Windows Store apps have no minimize button, only Close button
    Windows Store apps that are open are not visible on Taskbar
    Windows Store apps can still be pinned to the taskbar
    How do these two options work for closing app behavior?
    Modern app and Taskbar   setting
    OFF
    ON
    Boot   to desktop setting
    OFF
    Close goes to Start
    Close reveals the   app that was previously used, and eventually dead ends at the Desktop
    ON
    Close goes to desktop
    Close reveals the   app that was previously used, and eventually dead ends at the Desktop
    Know why “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start” does not work when “Show Windows Store app on taskbar” is checked on
    As MironV mentioned in the
    thread, Windows 8.1 Update is designed to introduce a number of changes for mouse and keyboard users that would help them use and switch between Windows Store apps alongside their familiar desktop applications. A lot of these changes only made sense when
    combined together, so they are toggled by one setting, which is “Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar.” This is usually enabled together with the first setting as a complimentary set of improvements for desktop users. When the setting is enabled, Windows
    Store apps are intended to feel more like regular maximized applications living on the desktop, though they are full screen only. For example, when you launch apps from Start, they appear on the taskbar until they are closed. You can also minimize them or
    switch between them by invoking the taskbar.
    Please understand that unchecking the “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" setting has no effect on close and minimize behavior when the “Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar” setting is checked, since
    they are controlling two independent things. If you tend to use only one Windows Store app at a given time, it may seem like we’re not respecting the setting by going to the desktop.
    Please click to vote if the post helps you. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

    I don't know if I'm the only one, but on my desktop (using mouse and keyboard only) I like to have my Start screen as my main screen.  To ensure this I made sure to uncheck the "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop" box and
    check the "Show Start on the display I'm using when I press the Windows Logo key" box. I also really like having the task bar appear at the bottom even when I'm using a modern app.  Based on the settings I've chosen (i.e., boxes I've checked or not checked),
    I would expect to be taken back to the start screen and not the desktop whenever I close an app.  From what I've read from your response and from others in this thread, in order to accomplish this function (i.e., closing an app and going directly to the
    start screen) I need to uncheck the "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar" setting.  By doing this I get the functionality I was looking for when the apps are closed and I get sent to the start screen.  However, I am now not able to see the taskbar
    when I'm in a modern app or when I'm on the start screen.  This seems counterintuitive/confusing as many have mentioned.  Not to mention it creates an additional step for users to get back to the Start screen.
    All I want to do is (1) use my start screen as my main screen, (2) see the taskbar when running whatever app I'm using (e.g., modern), and (3) go back to my start screen (and not the desktop) when I close an app.  It would only make sense that I should
    get these results if I leave the "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar" box checked and the "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" box unchecked; but unfortunately this is NOT the case.  I really hope that
    an update fixing this is coming sooner rather than later because this is really annoying.

  • Document from file - how better store information about document?

    I have a text file that contains information about documents (content from groups than define the document - one row is one document). Every group content from fields (from 10 to 70 in every group). Document consist of 9 groups. In one documen can difference number of groups (> 1 group). E.g. one document can have 3 group1, 2 group6. In another document 2 group9, 1 group 6 and so on. I need to store document in DB and must edit document (by JFrame). To store document I use object MyDocument to store information about document.
    3 solutions:
    1. Store every group as list from hastables
    public class MyDocument {
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group1;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group2;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group3;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group4;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group5;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group6;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group7;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group8;
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group9; 2. Store all groups as one list from hashtables
    public class MyDocument2 {
      private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> allGroups;
    } 3. Store groups as lists consist from individual objects (MyDocumentGroup1, MyDocumentGroup2 and so on.)
    public class MyDocument3 {
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup1> group1;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup2> group2;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup3> group3;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup4> group4;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup5> group5;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup6> group6;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup7> group7;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup8> group8;
       private ArrayList<MyDocumentGroup9> group9;
    public class MyDocumentGroup1 {
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group1;
    public class MyDocumentGroup9 {
       private ArrayList<Hashtable<String, String>> group9;
    }What solutions is better? Or maybe has another solution?

    Maybe better to store one document in ONE HashMap
    public class M2Document {
         private HashMap<String, String> data = null;in the next format:
    -------------key ---------value----------
    GroupID_FN | some value
    where, GroupID is ID of group, FN - field number
    example:
    -------------key ---------value----------
    Group1_1 | some value
    Group1_2 | some value
    Group2_1 | some value
    Group2_2 | some value
    Group3_1 | some value
    Group3_2 | some value

  • Firefox has taken over almost all of my desktop and I can't remove it....

    Firefox has taken over three quarters of my desktop and I can't remove it. This is irritating and I will remove firefox if this continues,
    I have pictures of my daughter as my desktop and do not appreciate this.

    On any windows machine use "Alt+SpaceBar" to help you move or resize the window.
    Windows 7 (only) users can use WinKey+leftarrow (cursor keys) to reposition window to the left half of the screen and then you can resize or move from there with the normal methods. Works nicely if you for instance lost your window on another monitor or want to switch the window to a different monitor in use. (something to look forward to in the future as you are on Vista)
    Please refer to the following article for many more tips, more complete information on how to fix, and if possibly an extension is involved in the problem.
    * '''http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resizing_oversize_window'''
    It is still possible to resize and move windows with JavaScript for those who lost the ability with Firefox 8.0 and above, but it involves a couple of extra steps covered in the above article.

  • How to store information in icloud

    Hi all we have just set up the icloud account.  is there any easy to use instructions on how to store information from our computer ie music into icloud.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Your iCloud account is not for storing music, that is done through your iTunes account. Any previous purchases can be redownloaded using iTunes in the cloud (use the purchased section in the iTunes store), or if you subscribe to iTunes match you can store all your library (up to 25,000 tunes) in the cloud.

  • I mistakenly deleted all browsers from my laptop in an attempt to start clean with the newest version of Firefox. I still have Firefox on my desktop. How can I copy it to my laptop?

    I mistakenly deleted all browsers from my laptop in an attempt to start clean with the newest version of Firefox. I still have Firefox on my desktop. How can I copy it to my laptop?

    Re-installing the Firefox browser is fairly easy. For most users the important part is the information held in the [[profiles|profile]] including bookmarks and passwords.
    If you remove personal settings it is almost impossible to get them back. You can however [[what is firefox sync?|sync]] between computers, and that effectively clones your bookmarks etc.
    If you have not already removed setting do not do so now, some of that info may be recoverable.

  • Is there an Adobe program that manages what sites can store on Flash player?

    I apologize in advance if I'm not posting properly , I am VERY new to all of this ,,,,My son uses Face Book allot and plays games there , I also play games on line and he was telling me that there was a program you could download that goes along with Adobe Flash Player that helps improve its performance by regulating how much information sites that use Flash Player can store on it and how they access your cam and mic and so on , like dumping your cache I assume ? Is there such a thing ? Again I apologize if I'm not posting this right ,,, "Stupid is as stupid does",,,, Respectfully , 2tattered

    Hi, You did well, I understand what you are asking  The first thing since those websites are not the safest, make sure you have a good Anti-Virus program running.
    Now these links to the Adobe site are not the easiest to understand. This is the Global Storage Settings Panel. It works together with the next link, which is the Website Storage Settings Panel. You need to read both first before making any Settings. The third link is the Global Privacy Settings Panel.
    When you go to these sites, they are active, you make the actual Setting right there. Nothing to download or Install.

  • Desktop Program at Apple Store

    He guys, didn't know where to post this so here goes...
    I was wondering if anyone was aware how they run the programs on the desktop at the Apple Store. I'm referring to the indent that now houses the apple iphone demo and such. I thought this would be a fantastic place for a calendar/to-do list and was wondering how I can manage this?
    Thanks

    You know you can save your $6 of £ or whatever it is, by using Yahoo's version of Konfabulator, 'the wiget engine' and a widget called 'zoomy dock' you can place it on the desktop level if you wish, of have it act more like a normal window, + loads of other stuff like battery status and clocks etc, check it out....
    http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/?search=zoomy+dock&x=0&y=0
    +it doesn't have to look like it does in the screen grab on the site, you can pick different backgrounds etc, see my desktop with zoomy added + calendar / clock / battery meter here....

    also... check out the 'dock divider' icons, they are real handy for splitting massive collections up making them easier to look at.

  • Wanted: a fake Desktop

    I'm setting up an iMac that will have three partitions:
    OSX 10.6.8
    OSX 10.8
    Data
    Fine by me, but my partner who will be using it a lot of the time, doesn't like storing her stuff inside that funny-looking-gray-thing on her Desktop called "Data". She's likes her stuff spread all over the Desktop – and nowhere else. I've got a story about that: whenever I am game enough to venture onto her laptop (usually in response to her asking me to fix something), the first thing I do is View > Clean Up. And just like a bowerbird whose collection of blue items has been messed up, when next she visits her Desktop she puts everything back just the way it was. i.e. a mess (yet if I dare leave a magazine laying around in the lounge room…)
    Anyway, now for various reasons* her stuff will have to be stored on the Data partition. So, is there a way of storing files on a partition, but make those files appear as if they are on a Desktop?
    * Files will be stored on Data and backed up on another drive. I expect to erase the OSX partitions every now and then and would rather avoid having to worry about Desktop files being backed up and archived. On my own computer, none of my files are ever stored on the OSX partition.

    Thanks for all the suggestions. Since it appears that I can't set up a real* Fake-Desktop (looks exactly like a Desktop but files are stored elsewhere), I've decided to try out a fake Fake-Desktop (FFD, looks similar to a real Desktop).
    Name the folder (or volume) where files are to be stored: Desktop.
    Make it fit the whole window and set to Icon view.
    From View, hide all the bars (Status, Tool, Path, Sidebar)
    Use Show View Options to set the background.
    To force this window to open at login (just in case it is closed accidentally) use System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items
    Voila – an FFD. Looks a bit weird to me, knowing that it covers the real Desktop and that instant access to disks and bars is lost, but Jenny almost never uses those things anyway. If I can't convince her to get more serious about using folders and hard drives, I'll see how she goes with an FFD.
    *Talking about real Fake items reminds me of my time in Singapore in the 1980s when the touts in Orchard Rd would pester me about copy watches: "You want buy copy watch?". So I'd look at their wares for a minute or so before declaring: "Hey, this isn't a real copy watch. This says Rolex! I want one that says Copy Watch". Our little interaction would usually end with them rather annoyed and telling me something like: "You stupid!" That particular tout wouldn't bother me again.

  • Invoking desktop app from Windows store App

    Hi,
    I have a Windows form desktop application developed using c#. I want to make use of the live tile feature available in WinRT apps (especially for Windows 10). The data in the live tile is to be fetched using WMI queries (Win32_LogicalDisk).
    How do I accomplish this? I don't want to rewrite the entire app. Live tiles should update on the background and on clicking the tile, my desktop app exe needs to be invoked. Is it possible to fetch WMI data and invoke exe from Windows Store apps?
    I tried using Brokered Windows Runtime components as given in http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dmx/archive/2014/04/30/how-to-trigger-a-desktop-process-from-windows-store-apps-the-easy-way-using-the-brand-new-visual-studio-templates.aspx . But could not get it to
    work as I get a 'TypeLoadException'.
    Thanks in advance.

    First, we'll assume that you're writing an LOB app, not an app intended for Store distribution, as you are trying to use a brokered component.
    The use of a brokered component is the correct thing for you to do in this case, as neither WMI nor Process.Start are available to regular Windows Store apps.  It's just a matter of proper creation of the brokered windows component for you to get going.
    My buddy Prashant wrote a cheatsheet for Brokered Components. I know it works as I've followed it myself:

  • How do I remove my App store information from a Mac about to be sold

    How do I remove my App Store information from
    a Mac about to be sold ?

    Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
    Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
    You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
    If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer with the machine.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
    The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either.
    Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")
