Faking 24fps - Trying to make my Video footage look cooler

Hey guys, I've been working on a music video for sometime now (1080i HDV footage) in FCP and After Effect CS3.
So I've about finished my final product, but when I preview it on a quality HDTV or quality monitor (looks great on my crappy $150 LCD monitor) it looks so fake or 'consumer video-like'. I bounced a mix of this video into After Effects and applied the Posterize Time effect at '24 fps' and BAMB! It looks like a music video finally! So now my question...
I'm working in Final Cut and After effects with HDV 1080i footage, what's the best way to get this to 24fps or to fake the 24fps look. I don't need true 24fps unless it's recommended for a better look (not going to film...ever). The Posterize Time effect in After Effects is great and I'll settle for it if there is not a better way or at least some recommendations to try. I'm not sure if that effect is combining frames or dropping them, but the footage is a little too choppy in a few places.

I am trying to see if there is anyway or effect to make some video footage look dreamy or heavenly, it is for a wedding so I want to give it that "mystical" feel. I hope my descriptive words make sense. The footage should almost have a shimmer.

Hi - One way to go is to use third party plug-ins, another is to learn how to combine and use filters in FCE to achieve the effect you want. Final Cut contains dozens of filters, that when combined can achieve very nice effects, and allow you a lot of control. I actually prefer the filters layering process as it keeps me in control of subtle variations of the effect. Here is one way to make your images a little more romantic. The following demo is done on Final Cut Pro, but as Mr. Wolsky pointed out, most if not all of these filters should be available to you in FCE:
I start by editing my scene to the timeline, and locking the audio:

It is a harshly lit shot of Meg The Dog ( a self portrait) with a cheap Kodak Zi8 camera:

To make it look nice, I edit the exact same scene in the exact same position on the timeline to V2:

I double click *on the clip on V2,* which is above our untreated clip, and it opens in the viewer. I select the Filters tab (which is empty).
I then go to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and drag the Gaussian Blur filter to the Filters tab in the Viewer window, and set it to around 20 pixels of blur:

This gives the image a nice soft look:

but everything is soft - and I just want the highlights to be soft and hold the detail in the non-bright parts of the picture. So I return to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Image Control > Brightness and Contrast and drag the Brightness and Contrast filter to the Filter pane in the viewer, setting the brightness and contrast up slightly:

Which makes the bright parts of the picture even brighter:

Now I want to combine this with the "normal" image on V1, keeping only the blurred highlights on V2. So back to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Key > Luma Key, and drag the Luma Key to the Filters Pane in the viewer. Note that I switch the Key Mode to Key Out Darker:

Which now gives me nice soft highlights while keeping detail in the scene where the luminance is in the more normal range:

To complete the effect, return to the Effects Tab > Video Filters > Stylize > Vignette and drag the Vignette filter to the Filters Pan in the viewer:

and this gives me a natural Vignetting look which focus attention more to the subject and has a more cinematic look:

Help - trying to make a video and imovie won't import the required video

the video i need has been converted using handbrak to mp4 and yet remains white when i try to import.
please help as i need to make a video for work and desperately running out of time now.

ok so i tried other websites and my webcam works fine with those. but i get on skype to make a skype call to friends or family and my screen turns back and i'm unable to do anything at that point. so i came on here to look if anyone had this problem and i've found some simular but i guess not what i'm hunting for. thou the suggestion that is commonly said is go to the Event Veiwer and post the most recent problem...so to get straight to the point this would be thing you would be looking for i suppose.

This error message has nothing to do with Skype, but may prevent other error messages to be reported by Event Viewer. Run this MS Fix It in order to fix this error message:

Also, please, run the DirectX diagnostics tool (32-bit version).
Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostics program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. Please, attach this file to your post.

How to make Flash Video player look good?

I put the FLVPlayback component on my stage to stream some video. It's looks rather bland with a white background and no border and I'd like to make the component look better. Does anyone have any recommendations or examples for improving the look of the video player?

you can use google to search for tutorials on skinning the component.

Can Shake make a video clip look poster like?

I'm a very long time user of FCP. I'm looking for a software app that I can put on a video clip that will give it a "poster" or cartoon like or 2D animated look. If anyone's seen the 2008 Coca-Cola short film winner, this is what I'm looking for:

Can Shake do this? FCP can give a poster-like look, but it's only a frame at a time. On a five minute video clip, that could take awhile...
I'm willing to buy whatever software / hardware is needed, but I just want to know if I'm buying the right software.

Why does my progressive footage look interlaced after export?

I've searched all the discussions on this topic and my issue seems to be very paticular...
I have imported AVCHD 1080p footage (29.97fps and 1.3333pas) into Premiere Pro CS4 Version 4.2.1. I placed this footage into a AVCHD 1080p anamorphic, 29.97fps, 1.333pas, progressive scan sequence. I exported the sequence out with a H.264 codec, 1440x1080p HQ preset and changed the frame rate to 29.97 and the field order says None (Progressive) and my footage when screened on the computer in a Media Player looks interlaced eventhough the raw footage does not look interlaced at all. I even interpreted the footage for all the clips used in the sequence to conform to No Fields (Progressive Scan) Field Order.
Did I leave something out? What am I doing wrong?
I will say that one clip in the sequence was edited in AE and rendered our as a .MOV with a PNG compression type and it does not look interlaced in the final export from Premiere Pro.

So I figured what the problem was...here at my job the manual that was available for the sony handycam was from an older model. I did not know this. I looked up the actual manual online and it specifies that the recording mode I've been using to capture (HQ HD) is actually shooting AVCHD 1080/60i...so my original footage is really interlaced. Here's where I had my "Ah Ha" moment. I'm currently switching to an iMac from PC and when I viewed the raw footage on a PC in the Media Player, it looked progressive. BUT, when I just played back the raw footage on my Mac, it looked interlaced so I knew something was wrong.
OK! so here I am trying to make 1080/60i footage look like 1080/30p this should be fairly easy correct?
(also, thank you Jim for affirming that my process is in fact correct IF I was using said progressive raw footage which made me question the project at it's beginnings)

Trying to make imovie incorporating trailer, video and slideshows

i am trying to make a video in iMovie starting with a trailer, then a movie (video clip), then a slideshow, another movie, another slideshow, another movie, then my last slideshow. I burned a copy, but it won't play continuously. I have to keep going back to the menu to choose the next section. How can I set it so it goes from the trailer right into the movie then into the slideshow, etc.....?

i didn't mean to say iMovie. I meant to say iDvd. I have finalized the trailer as an imovie and I have exported the slideshows into itunes and dragged them into my iDvd. They are all there and will burn just fine, I just don't know how to get them to play continuously without my intervention when they burn!!!!

How do I make my video into an old tv? Like with the old lines that move up and down and come in and out?

here is a super simple solution
1) upload all 3 versions to your .MAC "MOVIES" folder "movie 1 QT", Movie 1 WMV, Movie 1FLA" etc
Then follow the instructions below to create a "picture" of each file adding "for windows users click this player etc" for mac etc then in inspector link the "pictures" you create to the appropriate files this will
1) for windows users auto open the media player & play your video
2) open a blank web page with the QT file & same for flash (although I have never done this with flash it "should work"
here ya go
You need to make a non-movie page, any will do. Start your movie and take a photo of it with shift-apple-4. This will give you an image of the movie and also the Windows Media Player frame. Place this image on your page, give it a title etc and make sure the image is selected. Using the inspector, chose Link to File. When you do thius, navigate to the wmv, QT etc file that corresponds. When you upload your site, that file will be stored along with it and when the link is hit the wmv movie will launch.

I know it's not specifically an FCP X topic but I believe a number of FCE and FCP X users have tried to make timelapse videos from a series of photos.
This free app supposedly helps with the creation of such sequences but as I haven't used it I can't comment on how useful or not it may be.

After the skype 5 headache which many users are experiencing, I just found "" vtok "" in apples app store.
It supports VIDEO and CALL over wifi AND 3G !! It does work fantastic and is FREE.
BUT you would have to set up a free "Google mail" address to get it to work.
It's painless and is a great option.

Video Footage and the New Macbook

I recently purchased my first macbook after a long history of PCs. I was trying to upload some video footage from my JVC GR-D395 camcorder but I don't know how. Everywhere I look online, I'm told to use a firewire but I just learned the new macbook doesn't have the port. Does anyone know how I can get the video onto my computer? Thanks.

Network the raw data from a firewire enabled computer or write data to a USB or DVD from another computer. Hopefully soon the Ethernet to firewire adapters will start appearing. Don't hold your breathe.
