Falloff Blur - Lighting Effects in 64-bit PS CS5
Hello
I miss Lighting Effects. I know I can get it back by running in 32-bit mode, but it's just not the same...
Is there a way to get that awesome falloff blur that Lighting Effects has (had)? Like if I draw an oval, then apply some sort of blur or process of blurs to it to get that great look? It would also be really hande for making shadows.
Like this:
http://www.photoshopatoms.com/photoshop-basics/introduction-4-layer-styles/images/img06.jp g
Just curious...
-------------------S
I think one aspect of the effect is fairly easily mimicked by a Radial Blur Layer, converted to SO and then perspectively transformed; the shadows are a different matter though.

Lighting effects not showing up in CS5
This plug-in is not showing up on both CS5 and CS 5.1 running on a MAC OSX 10.6.7 Italian system. I have tried both from the Italian versions of PS and even from one new version in English of PS5.1 and it isn't to be found under the menu "rendering" or enywhere else. I see that it is in the plug.in folder and the folder of lighting effects is there as well, but it just doesn't show up. Any ideas about this bug? I've tried it on 3 different computers!
As far as i know, the lighting effects filter only works in the 32 bit version of
photoshop cs5/5.1 on a mac system.
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-7959a.h tml
There is also a photoshop macintosh forum (you posted in the photoshop elements forum)
http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_macintosh
Added: If you have the extended version of cs5, you might experiment using 3d lights
for lighting effects, which works in the 64 bit version of cs5. Turn your layer into a
3d postcard and use the 3d lights for various lighting effects.

Urgent - Need help with Lighting Effects Filter
Hi,
I need urgent help on something regarding the Lighting Effects filter in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I need lighting effect urgently to complete a project.
I am using Photoshop CS5 on a Windows Vista computer in 64-bit mode.
On the net it is given that you can run photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode to use the lighting effects filter - both on Mac and PC.
My Problem:
While on the net it is given how to change from 64-bit to 32-bit and vice-versa, I have my Photoshop CS5 installed on 'E - Drive' and not on 'C - Drive' due to lack of space. I have followed all the instructions on how to open it in 32-bit mode on the net, but I still cannot use the lighting effects plugin.
What I need is if someone could give simple and clear instructions on how to open Photoshop CS5 32-bit version instead of opening the default 64-bit version on Windows Vista - that would be great.
Looking forward to answers.
Thanks. That advice about running the 32 bit version of cs5 for the Render> Lighting Effects filter
only pertains to the mac version of photoshop cs5.
The lighting effects filter does work in the 64 bit version of photoshop cs5 on windows, your
document just has to be 8 bits/channel and in the RGB Color mode (Image>Mode) same
for using the lighting effects filter in the 32 bit version of cs5.
Added: In general it's frowned upon installing photoshop on drives other than C drive.

Photoshop 13.0.1
OS X 10.6.8
16 bits per channel RGB mode.
The Lighting Effects filter quantises the optional height-map channel to 8 bits, which can result in a very obvious terraced-slopes appearance and moiré.
(Adobe, please do not simply reply with "you should be using 13.0.4" unless that actually fixes the problem.)Alpha channels are 16-bit in a 16-bit per channel document. As Christoph said, selections are limited to 8-bit, so if you make a channel from a selection then that channel will have 8-bit quantisation.
Here is an example of Lighting Effects filter using a channel containing a 16-bit radial gradient as a height-map, and where the filter is quantising the height values to 8-bit. -
Lighting Effects filter in PS (CS6; 64-bit) crashes program
This is a Win7 64-bit OS, new CS6 installation with all updates applied/installed.
Use of Lighting Effects rendering filter in PhotoShop (CS6, both 64- and 32-bit versions) causes PS to crash.I did make some suggestions, which you appear to have only dabbled with... Did you try Basic mode? Did you try checking/unchecking all the various settings in all the combinations? Be exhaustive. You feel your system is advanced, I get that, but you're looking to isolate a problem here.
I'm not as familiar with nVidia as I am with ATI, but have you investigated the various settings their driver UI provides?
I'm not saying there's a definite fix in there, but In doing these things you might:
Discover a combination of settings as a workaround that makes it work acceptably for you.
Be able to tell Adobe or nVidia exactly what to look for if they want to investigate it further.
By the way, have you contacted nVidia and let them know Photoshop is crashing when it tries to use their GPU for Lighting Effects?
Lastly, some folks have found that fully uninstalling the display driver, cleaning up any remnants of it and prior display drivers that may still be laying around, and installing the latest driver sometimes helps. Display driver writers are apparently not all that good at writing installers.
I never had this issue with CS4... Only CS6
People sometimes like to say that kind of thing, but (and I'm sorry to be blunt): So what?
This is an entirely new program with new, different, and greater demands of your computer system. It's using more and different features of your GPU than any prior version.
I can only assure you that it does work okay for some others. I have had no problems with Lighting Effects myself. But you should know that since Photoshop CS6 first came out I *HAVE* had crashes while trying to do 3D modeling work. At least some of those were caused by the (then current) ATI display drivers. I (and others) contacted ATI and described the problems, and their subsequent driver versions have gotten more stable. Their current version seems to work rather well with Photoshop CS6. My point is that things can get better. Hang in there.

I am having dark blurred light ghosting effect on my imac screen. Does anyone experience this?
When posting in Apple Communties/Forums/Message Boards.......It would help us to know which iMac model you have, which OS & version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by completing your system profile and filling in the information asked for.
***This will help in providing you with the proper and/or correct solutions.***
Can you post a picture of your problem? Sometimes, that helps. You did not mention where this ghosting effect takes place? Startup? Finder? Browser? -
Lighting Effects options not showing up for cs6 on 32-bit windows 7.
I've seen a similar question asked many times here but nothing seems to be working.
When I go to filter -> render -> lighting effects it seems to pop up some kind of options pane for maybe a quarter second while it's thinking, but once it's done all it does is create a duplicate layer called "lighting effects". I never actually see the options.
I've updated my drivers, and I just installed cs6 today, without importing any of my old settings from before.
Any idea what's going on?Quote from »photoshop_reference.pdf«:

Disappearing Icons/Controls in Blur Gallery and Lighting Effects Filters
About a month ago (after I downloaded Photoshop 2014 but BEFORE the most recent update); I found that the adjustable tack icon (in Field Blur) and the light icons (in Lighting Effects) have disappeared. I can still adjust their controls but they don't appear on the screen so I'm not sure where exactly they are and thus can't move them. Anyone else had this issue? This has persisted after the most recent update.
Could you please post a screenshot to illustrate the issue?
What are the Performance Preferences?
What have you done for general trouble-shooting so far (restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be of special interest)?

Edit: Have you tried changing the GPU "Advanced Settings" (and restarting Photoshop, otherwise that won’t take effect)? -

Doesn't a Mac have a definitive way to check to see whether an application is running in 64 bit mode or 32? Some kind of process manager or something? 22 posts have gone by and the original poster doesn't yet seem convinced that it is actually running in 64 bit mode.
I don't know why there has been doubt since post #12 where I explained that Ps must be running in 64-bit mode when more than 2100 MB RAM is reported in Preferences.
Anyway, here's a screenshot of Activity Monitor showing CS6 in 64-bit mode and CS5.1 in 32-bit mode. -
Still no Lighting effects filter even after PS in 32 bit
I am booting up PS in 32 bit mode so I can use the Lighting effects but I am still not getting the option in the render menu. Can anyone help?
Hmmm… I wonder if folks who got the CS5 DVD that installs Photoshop 12.1 right off the bat only get the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5—as opposed to those whose install media installs 12.0 and then they have to update to 12.0.4.
It's pure speculation, but the CS 6 beta for the Macintosh is only 64-bits, no 32-bit version available. -
Hi guys,
I have a copy of CS 5.1 and my system is a Macbook Pro on Mac OS 10.6.8
I want to use lighting effects, so I changed it to 32 bit mode. So I go in to Photoshop and it's not there. I reset PS's settings, restart the computer as well. Still nothing.
Wah. It worked before in the past, so why not now? Also I checked the plugin folder to make sure the lighting effect plugin was actually there and, yes it was. So what gives?
Anyway, any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated, thankyou
JanOk this is the render menu in 32 bit mode. Annndddd...
I noticed there is still the 'x64' beneath CS' title... is that supposed to be there when you boot in 32 bit mode? Or could it be that my CS just isn't loading in 32 bit?
Anyway thanks for replying! -
Lighting Effects and Blur Gallery defective in CC 2014?
I'm not seeing the field controls or any control pins for either the Lighting Effects options or within the Blur Gallery. This is on an iMac/Yosemite setup, with the GPU enabled and both OpenGL and OpenCL available.
Does anyone have ideas on what could be the problem here?
thanks
Johnhi,
I managed to restore both the field and pin controls by going to View > Show > Show Extra Options, turning everything off and then going there again and turning things back on. For the Blur Gallery options, it is necessary to have Show > Edit Pins activated, no matter whether View > Extras is initially checked or not. You can actually execute the Edit Pins command with the Filter(s) active. This is very quirky.
thanks for the response

Is the Lighting Effects Filter still 32-bit in CS6?
In Photoshop CS4 and CS5, it's a real PIA to have to restart PS in 32-bit mode in order to use the Lighting Effects filter (FILTER>RENDER>LIGHTING EFFECTS). Has this been addressed in CS6? (Still looking for reasons to upgrade.) Thanks.
See this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/979969
It focuses on GPU requirements and troubleshooting. The Lighting Effects Gallery depends on the right graphics card and drivers.
Run throught the troubleshooting steps first in order to see what needs to be done. -
Why has Lighting Effects stopped working in CS6 32 bit
I have just upgraded my graphics card and Lighting Effects has stopped working in 32 bit CS6. It never worked in 64 bit but it was OK in 32 bit until now. I press the effect and nothing happens. Can anyone help?
Hi,
If you revert the driver update do you get the Lighting Effects menu back? What is your OS, video card, and driver version? Do you have 13.0 or 13.1?
regards,
steve -
Filter - Render - Lighting Effects seems to be somewhat less than perfectly functional for me.
Unlike another recent poster, I'm seeing the controls okay, but they don't actually seem to work properly. Worse, I can reliably produce a crash.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5670 and Catalyst 12.6 (latest released) drivers for Windows 7 x64, Advanced mode GPU operation. My detailed system info can be found here: Link
Chances are this is a display driver issue, but I want Adobe to know about it.
Here's what I see...
For testing I create a middle-gray square document, 8 bits/channel, sRGB, then start the Lighting Effects filter on it:
If I toggle the preview setting off and on a number of times, this happens:
This is reproducible, though it sometimes takes more or less Preview toogles. Here is the pertinent information from several such Photoshop crashes:
Next I am going to try Normal and Basic mode to see if they make any difference with this problem. I'll follow up here.
-NoelNoel, followed your example and no crashes on my system (Intel 4000 card with latest production drivers) but horribly slow, probably the slowest filter I have ever tried - Basically unusable.....
