Familiar Story - tx2000 - lights and fan on, but black screen at boot up

I've been reading around that there's a common problem with the 1000 series of tablets. After 1 1/2 years, the sucker gets a black screen at boot up, yet the lights are on.
Well, almost a week to my tx2000's 1 1/2 year date (and now out of warranty), I tried to take my tablet out of hibernation. The screen was black yet the lights were on and I could hear the fan.
I tried basic troubleshooting with the online tech, but to no avail. It doesn't work, and they tell me it'll cost about $400 for it to be picked up and repaired. Anybody got a viable solution, or do I just need to go ahead and start saving for a Mac?
Thanks HP for reselling such faulty merchandise.

So this most likely does not apply to the tx1000 problem, but I believe the tx2000 recent problem is not related.
For those getting lights and fan on.. or perhaps on for a second or so but no boot screen or logo it maybe related to your video card driver.
Sounds crazy right?  Well your video card driver controls how your computer goes into hibernation and sleep.  If the drivers are incorrect the system may not handle this process correctly when you try to reboot it.
I'm not certain on how to get the system to boot up again, but I've done it quite a few times while trying to revive the machine.. pulled the battery.. the ram.. held the power button.. lots of cussing.. the solution seemed different each time, but eventually if you can get back into windows you'll find that either by not using hibernation/sleep or by loading the original video card drivers from the hp site, you'll avoid this problem again.
This problem started occurring for me after microsoft made available a driver update on windows update this past summer..  then suddenly everyone started having issues at the exact same time.. I've seen it blamed on simultaneous heat issues around the world caused by exactly 1 year and 2 months of dust collection on every tx2000 laptop... however I'm quite certain it's the new video drivers in combination with hibernation/sleep.
But don't take my word for it.  For more information on how video drivers can affect the boot process check this site: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1046825.html

The computer shut down on its own while we were gone and will not start up again.  When we press the power button we hear drive and fan noises but no chime and the screen remains black.  Any suggestions?

A pretty common thing for computers that have been shipped is a RAM chip becoming dislodged just enough to cause what you are describing. Try re-seating your RAM chips. Basically just pull them out and push them back in. Take a look at this article if you need some direction on this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

  • When I got a new iPhone5, I experienced short battery life, and system sofware issues were not the cause. The camera also takes a blury picture regardless of lighting and I have the black one. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

What makes you so sure it isn't software?
The camera can be focused by take the point of focus on the touch screen.
If it is new as you said, it should be under warranty. Make a Genius Bar appointment or contact Apple with a repair request.

My 3rdG iPod Touch is frozen on the home screen and the volume and time works but the screen doesnt, what do I do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Livestream Camcorder to MBP using ADVC110 but Black Screen

I get a black screen on skype/ichat when using a Canon XF105 (semipro camcorder) connected to the Macbook Pro. The various application recognize the advc110 but no audio/visual just a black screen.
    Here is the setup:
-Canon XF105 connected to Grassvalley ADVC110 using av out cable ( camera set to output SD mode)
-ADVC110 switch is lit blue: analog in.
-ADVC110 connecting to Macbook Pro using firewire 400 to 800

Look at the black screen after booting under a strong light, either from the front, or through the Apple logo on the top. Do you see faint images for your normal desktop pattern?
A general step would also be to reset the SMC:

And you can try to seek out an external display and see if you get any image.

  • IPad 2 has a black screen which lights up to a grey black screen when I press the power or home button

iPad 2 has a black screen which lights up to a grey black screen when I press the power or home button but I dont see the apple logo. The battery is fully charged and when I plug it in to my computer, I can use iTunes to do everythng except backup the iPad since its passcode locked. Please help me resolve this problem. I don't have apple care

Yup! I've been there! You just have to double-tap the screen with three fingers and the zoom should go back. You have to turn off the feature in Settings>Accessibility>Zoom>and turn the switch off so this won't happen again when you double-triple tap.

  • MacBook Pro seems to boot up, but black screen

I have a MacBook Pro from around Oct 2006, intel processor, uses 2x512 MB PC2-5300 RAM.
I changed the RAM to a 2x1 GB kit, but found that one of the new RAM modules was dead on arrival. I confirmed this was the case by using the new RAM in a different machine, and sure enough one of the modules just arrived was dead. This is no problem, I can send it back.
    However ...
Now I have put back my old 2x512 MB RAM configuration, which was previously working fine. And my MacBook Pro will boot, no flashing lights indicating an error, and no beeps indicating an error. But the screen is blank. I have checked to make sure the RAM modules are seated correctly (they are) - I also tried switching the RAM modules in the slots just in case there is any funk with that.
I further tried the CRTL + option + P + R to reset the PRAM of the motherboard, that doesn't seem to work.
I'm starting to feel the graphics adapter is dead, since there is no output at all onto the screen.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • IMac G5 boots, and then goes to black screen

This is not my iMac, but a friend who is using this that she got from here son who upgraded to an Intel iMac. The hardware is a G5 20 iMac. I don't have any more information since it wont power on....or have the installation disks...
The symptoms are that the machine will power on, "bong" show the blue apple screen, then the spinning lines and then suddenly a black screen and nothing more. I booted to single user via Command-S and ran fsck to ensure the disk was clean. Ir reported no errors, but halfway through the check the fans came on full. Only having experienced an Inetl iMac's fans, they were very load. When the fsck finished (with no errors) the fans turned off again. When i exitied the shell to reboot, the same thing happened again. Black screen and not repsonse.
The fact that I can get to single user shell and check the disks points to most of it working, but I'm confused as to why it gets no further.
ANy help would be appreciated as she want to migrate from her current PC based workflow to a more reliable(!) one, but this isn't helping....
    Thanks,
    Jimmy

Thanks to the responders for their input. I was fearing the worst. However, it looks like the issue wasn't as serious as a broken capacitor. I don't understand why the following worked, as it's not as if the machine was always not working, but just started.
As part of the diagnostic process, the back was opened and then the memory reseated. After reboot this still failed. Then Command Option O F to get into open firmware and then
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
and the machine rebooted and came up again.
So far there have been no problems, but it looks like this was the fix.

Don't know how many tries on TS3173 and still didn't work for me.
After reading from threads after threads, I got it fixed with following steps:-
    Solution 3:
If you applied solution 2 and you still have problems, try the steps below.

    2. Press a key when you are prompted.
    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then 4. click Next.
    5. Click Repair your computer.
    6. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
7.In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type (these commands are safe - more information)
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
    Code: Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
    Press ENTER after each command.
    Restart your computer.

  • Satellite A100-646 and external monitor shows black screen

    Hello to everybody,
I have a similar problem with A100-646 (bought in Italy). Laptop's LCD and external monitor shows black screen but system boots without other problem. When laptop is not used for a long time (half a year) it work for one week without any problem.
Unfortunately, there is no proper service in a place where I live. Perhaps, there is a problem with power supply.
Is there other idea? Does anybody have a service manual? ([email protected])

It is not easy to find shop where you can order original and new hardware components.
Best source for such parts is definitely eBay where you can buy used but well working components.
Upgrade? You must know that upgrade on mobile computers is not the same as on desktops. Cooling possibilities are not the best and each notebook model has optimized cooling system for original parts. So new graphic card can be more powerful and produce more heat and it is definitely not good for your notebook. So best thing you can do is to replace it with original part.
