Family account settings - FAQ?

Is there a FAQ or tutorial on how to set up multiple devices where some are shared by family members?   The whole concept of accounts and apple ids is very confusing when you don't have a one-to-one match with people and devices and I can't even find the right place to ask this question.   Is it too much to ask for my wife and I to acces the same iphoto and itunes libraries on a single imac, but sync different playlists/albums to personal ipods/phones, while backing up our paid apps and content?   And is there a graceful way to share the use of an ipad with different facetime accounts?

I quite agree no-one should be cheery about these appalling, complex, innefective design flaws. I have been using macs since the 90's and like most users have been through an evangelical phase. But now, with issues like this I am getting so frustrated with the controlling attitude of the mighty apple that I am looking for alternatives to mac.
Android is great on the phone I have used and apparently on android tablets you can have multiple user accounts. Sell the ipad? I think I might. Alternatively there is an app called divide on the ipad which allows you to set up a seperate 'area' with different email, IM and calanders.
Picasa will solve your photo sharing problem (the desktop version not the bizarrely clunky web interface) and is free to download. Dropbox is also increasingly good for photo sharing. Copy may be an even better option - it doesn't have the same web viewer but it does give you 15GB stright up - (20GB if you follow this link: https://copy.com?r=Y8hU0q ). Both of these are cloud storage rather than photo apps, but combined with picasa you have everything you need.
I've not found the music solution yet, has anyone?
Anybody?

  • Family account for contacts but with same apple ID - iCloud use

Hi, I am writing to ask what the best way to setup a multiple contacts account using the same apple ID for iCloud.  My wife and I both use the same apple ID for our iPhones as well as our iMac and iPad.  I would like to be able to have my contacts on my iPhone and iPad and have my wife's contacts on her iPhone (and obviously having both our contacts on our iMac for backup and reference).  I have read some forums suggesting creating a "family" apple ID accout for some iCloud stuff where I could have my contacts linked to and then having our existing apple ID for her to use.  We share calenders, downloaded apps/purchases and some Documents and Data (Money app) - all of which I would like to keep the way I have described.  I would just like to be able to have my contacts and her contacts separate for iCloud purposes.  I read something about the primary and second account settings in the Mail/Contacts/Calenders but it isn't very clear.  I seem to
I have yet to venture creating such another apple ID account as I don't really know how to go about doing it.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Bill Cooley

Much easier to manage if you each have your own AppleIDs and computer logins.
You can easily share contacts and calendars through iCloud while still keeping them separate.
    You keep this AppleID.
She creates a new one and adds it on her iPhone in Setttings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars
These are your primary iCloud accounts
Now each of you go to Setttings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars and add an iCloud account.
Add the other's account (as a secondary iCloud account). You can select to use Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Find My iPhone.
I have my daughter's iCloud account this way and I use Contacts, Calendars, Reminders. This way I can view or update her info from my iPhone/computer.

  • How to share a photo stream w/ family account

I have searched for two days for a solution, but could not find one.
    Our setup is as follows:
One iMac at home, where iPhoto and Yosemite is running on.
My wife has an iPhone 5S with iOS8 and I have one, too.
We have an iCloud Family Account, and she has her own Apple-ID, but is part of the family account.
    Prob:
Photos she is taking are not added automatically to the iMac - iPhoto Photostream. It only works with MY Photostream. It seems that one could only have a photo stream for one Apple-ID, regardless of a Family Account setup.
I have created a shared Family iCloud - Album, but I find this too cumbersome, since she needs to add photos manually to it all the time and secondly I don't know if these are added automatically to the iPhoto Media Lib on the iMac.
Desired solution: Without sharing the same Apple ID both iPhones should have a Photostream (not a shared iCloud album), and this photo stream should automatically add photos to the Media Lib on the iMac. Sort of a "shared photo stream".
Many thanks in advance - hopefully somebody has cracked this nut before me :-)
    Best, Georg

    Where are you looking?
There are a few ways to do it. You can select a photo in the Photo app then tap the Share button, there should be a Photo Stream button where you can add a new Photo Stream. Or from the Photo Stream section of the Photo app tap the (plus) button in the top left corner.
If these options are not available check Settings/iCloud/Photo Stream to ensure both My Photo Stream and Shared Photo Stream are turned on.

  • How do I set up my iphone 5 so I can access my family account? I purchased music from itunes using my apple id, and those songs do not appear in our family cloud.

How do I set up my iphone 5 so that I can access my family account? Recently I purchased music from itunes using my apple id, and now I cannot find those songs in our cloud. I wanted to add those songs to my ipod. Do I have to buy them again using my husband's apple id?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can use different ID's for iTunes and iCloud.
Just delete the account in settings > iCloud and create them their own account.
if the children are minors, you wiil need to create and be responsible for each account yourself.

  • Port number from verizon to family account in FL, but I live in PA

Getting an iphone 4, I currently am with verizon and am looking to port my 917 (NYC) area code number to my family account, which is in FL.... But I live in PA. (I've moved a bunch)
CSR told me that I'd have to get a number local to the area where the account is based.....
I know it CAN be done...so what's the way around this red tape?

No, you don't need a US bank account. Any account that can accept direct payments from an overseas source will work.
See this link for how to get started and obtain an EIN. (Doing this over the phone with the IRS after filling in the form is the quickest and easiest way to get this done.)

Now I had to restart my Ipod all over again which because of that i lost all my data. When I want to get apps I can't install them because of a billing information problems. What security code do they want on my account settings information? And how do you delete purchased apps that you install, but didn't want?

Maybe the three or four digit security code on your credit card card

  • How to post calendars to Family account

Hope this isn't too stupid a question, but we have 3 or 4 people at work who did have individual iCal accounts they'd published successfully. The company recently insituted a family account for them, as it was less costly and, it was assumed, more useful.
However, nobody now knows how to post /publish their individual iCal calendars to the new family account and I'm having trouble finding answers on Apple's web site.
Can anybody help me out here? How can the individuals post their calendars now that we have this Family Account?
    MJM

Sorry that I'm not very helpful... Are your employee computers setup with the family account? It should be as simple as publishing the calendar and having everyone subscribe to each calendar.
You may want to write Apple to see if you can have this clarified because it is not in their FAQ section.. there is a form that you can fill out at http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac/ical/
It would certainly be strange if you were unable to publish calendars from the family account....
Perhaps your family account has not yet taken affect...

  • Thunderbird (paired w. Cybermesa) no longer puts copy of msgs in the sent folder. I submitted this 2 wks ago & have tried Tools / Account Settings as described.

Thunderbird (24.6.0) running on a Mac (With Cybermesa POP account, not AOL) no longer puts a copy of sent message into the Sent mail folder. I followed the instructions in your FAQ and read the similar question from Mike which hasn't been up there longer and hasn't been answered either.
Pretty critical for my application to have a record of what was sent, and when. If you don't care, ignoring the problem for 2 more weeks will make that pretty clear and I'll find something else that does work.
I look forward to hearing from you,

  • Family account will not transition to iCloud. Keep going round in circles - get Congratulations message from mobileme then still cannot sign into iCloud. Have moved 2 other family accounts weeks ago but this one will not?

Keep going round in circles - get Congratulations message from mobileme then still cannot sign into iCloud. Have successfully moved 2 other family accounts weeks possibly months ago but this one will not? Am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 OSX. All ideas welcome as these are original mac accounts and keen not to lose them - call me sentimental:-)

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, OSX 10.6.8 will not support iCloud. You can use the mail address from the iCloud account with Snow Leopard bot not the rest of the iCloud features. You can access then via the web browser though at iCloud.com.
    To set up iCloud mail.
Delete your mail account from Mail preferences and set it up again using the Mail Server Information.
Some users have apparently encountered issues using this information in pre-Lion set ups (I haven't), Roger Wilmut has kindly provided instructions for those who find themselves with this problem.

  • .mac family account

had a computer crash and lost all access-codes of my family pack accounts. I still do have the .mac activation key. how can I get access to all account-settings ?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Could you tell us a little more about what you want to do. Bear in mind that iTunes has nothing to do with your iCloud account.

  • TS4020 family with multiple apple accounts, can we create a secondary "family" account?

family with multiple apple accounts, can we create a secondary "family" account?

You can perfectly well create a new separwate iCloud account: for this you will need to create a new Apple ID for which you will need a non-Apple email address you haven't used elsewhere for iCloud.
That done, everyone can sign into it in System Preferences (or Settings)>Mail, Contacts & Calendars and enable the various data types in the checklist there. This is a 'secondary account': its email, Contacts and Calendars will appear alongside those in the existing 'primary account' but you don't get 'push' email (it's checked periodically) and it cannot use PhotoStream.
Note that if you've been using the same device to create other accounts, there is a limit of three iCloud accounts which can be created by any one device, so if that's been reached you would have to use another device: once done the first device can sign into it perfectly well.

  • In Thunderbird, I cannot send email. I am asked to enter an email address in Mail and Newsgroup Account settings but when I click on this option, nothing opens.

I can connect to Thunderbird and receive email. However, I cannot send emails. When I press send (either from replying to an email or entering an email address manually) I get the following error message:
    Sending of message failed.
No sender specified. Please fill in your email address in the Mail & Newsgroup Account settings.
When I click on the menu option within the email message Tools/Mail & Newsgroup, the message minimises and the programme returns me to my inbox. There is no Mail & Newsgroup setting on the mail programme.

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

When trying to update  Apps in iTunes on my computer my old Apple ID appears, which is no longer in use and has no password; even when I try to create a password for this Old ID, Apple won't let me. When I go into see my Account settings My new Apple ID / iTunes ID are listed and the passwords are correct obviously so why can't I update my Apps?   Why does my Old apple ID keep appearing and how can I get Apple to change this?

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?
