Family DVDs to mp4 for AppleTV

I have a PC with Vista, as well as an iPod video and an AppleTV. I'm wanting to know if were to upgrade to Quicktime Pro if I will be able to convert my family video DVDs (unprotected, .VOB files) or other MPEG2 files to H.264 format so I view them on AppleTV or my iPod.
I'm assuming I would also need MPEG-2 Playback Component, but still I can't seem to find any straight answer, even when I called the Apple tech support phoneline. I'm just wanting to know if I were to spend the $30 for Quicktime, and maybe the MPEG2 software, if it will work and produce the compressed MP4 files that I can upload to my AppleTV.
On top of the conversion, I'd like to know if Quicktime will preserve the chapter markers, and/or allow me to add meta-data to the files so that AppleTV displays it like the movies I buy from iTunes.

Good questions.
Here are the answers:
QuickTime Player and the Apple MPEG-2 Playback Component will allow you to "playback" most non encrypted DVD's (MPEG-2). But it isn't an editor or a converter (even Pro upgrade).
Windows and Mac users can use MPEG Streamclip (free) and the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20) to export and edit in this app. It can also export to QuickTime formats (including the iPod settings when using MPEG-4 Video codec).
If you have version 7.1.5 of QuickTime the "Export to iPod" preset found in MPEG Streamclip should make a 640X480 (4:3) .m4v file that will work with TV.
Do a short test file before committing to a big project.

  • How to rip DVD to iTunes for AppleTV?

    Hi all,
I am new to the mac world and interested in how best to rip a DVD to iTunes for use in AppleTV?  Using 2010 Mac Mini.  Thanks!

I use "Mac DVD Ripper Pro" to rip the DVD to my iMac (not free but works well), then use handbrake to convert to a iTunes friendly format (just use the AppleTv 2 preset).
I do it this way so i can rip several, and then load all of them into the  handbrake queue and let it process them over night.
Then i use iDentity to add the metadata to the file and add to iTunes.

  • App for converting standard DVDs to MP4 for Iphone

I have used Handbrake to convert standard DVDs to MP$ for my Iphone, but have run into a problem with the 64-bit version.  I cannot go back to 32-bit version.  Is this the best app for this conversion?  If so, should I reinstall?

Are these "home made" DVDs, that is, DVDs without copy protection? Or are they commercial video DVDs?  If you're referring to commercial and hence copy-protected video DVDs, breaking the copy protection, which would be necessary to copy the videos from the DVD and convert them, is illegal in the US (and other countries), so we're not allowed to discuss it here.
You may want to post in the Handbreak forums in either case.
    Regards.

  • Ripping DVDs for AppleTV?

Can I use a program like Popcorn to rip DVDs and convert them to some format that will stream to my AppleTV? If so, what format and settings would you recommend?
    Thanks.

Yes, the user agreement does not allow you talk about the process of ripping/circumventing DRM stuff - I understand and agree with that. The original question is about using an off-the-shelf product and there are practical and legal applications for it.
I'm going to explain the process I would use if someone in my family created a DVD of their home movies with iDVD. This is completely legal for me to want to take that DVD and transfer it to my AppleTV.
    1) Insert Family DVD into computer.
    2) Use something like Popcorn to extract the contents to files on computer.
    3) Use something like Handbrake to convert the movies into AppleTV MP4s.
    4) Add the MP4 to my iTunes Library
    5) Sync to my AppleTV
This is a completely legal process to describe. The key thing to know here is that using a program like Handbrake allows you to convert what you pulled off the DVD to an MP4 file suitable for AppleTV.
    Good luck,
    CR

  • Using an animation-friendly codec for decoding DVDs to MP4

    Hi,
I have some purchased cartoon DVDs that I'd like to convert into MP4s for travel purposes etc. Using Handbrake has resulted in a lot of artifacts, and I wonder if using an animation-specific codec would give better results - not to mention smaller file sizes. Could someone advise me how to go about converting DVDs to MP4s using an animation codec? I own QT 7 Pro and iMovie. I also have Diva and Drop2DV.
NB: I am aware of the copyright restrictions on recorded media and wish to re-assure the MPAA, RIAA, FACT, PRS, FBI, CIA, CPS and South-East England Water and Sewerage Workers Union that I in no way intend to distribute, freely or otherwise, any of the backups I may make as a result of receiving information on this forum.
    Cheers,

Well say you had plain vanilla DVD content from your iDVD you made. The bitrate on the animation codec is huge, and the resulting file would likely be actually larger than from the DVD file you began with. And won't conform to MPEG-4 since it is not the MPEG-4 codec anyway.
Just use MPEG Streamclip, export to MPEG-4 and if this is for iPod press the iPod button. You need the Apple MPEG-2 component and don't forget to fix timecode errors. H264 is plenty good for this transcoding.

  • Copying DVD's and VHS's onto HD and incorporating into iTunes for AppleTV

I'm needing a good all-around application for digitizing and then transporting my home DVD's, VHS's and even old cassette audios into my iTunes for AppleTV viewing. I'm wanting a completely digital world, backed up by my new Drobo. What I'm needing is a good application to do all this. Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but I don't know where else to ask these questions.

Kelly, try visiting the site Life Hacker (www.lifehacker.com) for some guidance. In addition to really good content that could answer your questions, they have a great user discussion area where you can post questions like this and receive recommendations, advice, etc. Don't get me wrong, the user support offered here in the Apple Discussions is awesome and if you get an Apple TV, this is the place to come for support and advice. But if you're still in the decision-making stage, a site like Life Hacker is probably where you want to go for information.

  • Best video format for converting DVD to NAS for widely sharing

Summary: The article shows you with an easy workaround for
copying DVD to NAS for streaming by ripping DVD to NAS friendly video
    format on Mac and Windows
I recently purchased a NAS to store all my music/photos etc on. I
can stream stuff to my iPhone/iPad using the NAS software. What I want
to do is rip all my DVDs (over 400) to my NAS, but I’m not sure which
format to do it in, to play nice with my Apple TV2, Xbox 360, iPhone,
iPad etc. I wanna get some advice as to what format to rip in and what
    software to use?
Learn some tips from online, I got know that to copy dozens of DVD movies to NAS,
you need to get the content off the DVD disc as a protection-free and
easily readable element for NAS. In this case, at the first place
powerful third-party software for backup DVD to NAS is what you need.
There are many, many DVD ripping tools on the market. I’ve tired a pile of them.
    Brorsoft DVD Ripper
is the best one I’ve tried yet. It is capable of ripping DVD to MP4,
AVI, MKV for NAS streaming with no quality loss; it also enables you to
copy DVD main movies for backup onto NAS in .vob format. And what I’ve
learned is that MP4 would be one best target format for it is fully
compatible with nearly all media devices including iPad, iPhone, PS3,
Apple TV, etc. If you are running on Mac OS X, turn to  DVD Ripper for Mac. If you haven’t got the software, download it now and let’s start the conversion.
Ripping and copying DVDs to NAS
    1. Launch the DVD ripping program for NAS devices . Then
click "Load DVD" to import the DVD files you want to convert. To select
the subtitles you like, simply click Subtitle and select the one you
prefer. P.S. Before start the conversion, you can choose to backup DVD mian movies.
    2. Click Format bar and choose your desired format. To store
hundreds of DVD's on NAS, you can rip DVD to .mp4, or .avi, .mkv, etc
compressed format. And click Settings bar, you can adjust the level of
compression to suit the quality you want.
Tip: If you like, you can click “Settings” to change the
video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. Keep in mind
the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution
which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible
    quality loss, and vice versa.
    3. Press the "Convert" button to start ripping DVD for NAS streaming.
After the conversion, click Open button to find the output files.
Make sure the wireless network connection is accessible among the NAS
and Apple TV, PS3, HD TV or other media players. Then just enjoy the
high quality DVD movies anywhere anytime.

I've always found encoding with Handbrake and choosing the Apple TV2 preset is an excellent place to start and video encoded using that preset will work on my iPhone 4, 4S and iPad 2.
If the files encoded using that preset are too big for one's taste they can always encoded at a lower average bit rate rather than using the default 'Constant Quality' of 20.
Later on I'm sure the Handbrake group will have an AppleTV '3' preset supporting the 1080p format supported by the ATV3 and iPad '3' but using such a preset would not create a file usable on the iPad 2 or the iPhones.

  • IPod Classic 160GB film library sync problem -  trying to sync films that have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store - all other libraries sync perfect - why?

Hello Apple and the iTunes Windows PC users community.
I am trying to sync films that I have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store. The mp4s all appear and play successfully in my iTunes application but will not sync across to the iPod film library folder.
For your information: I am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on a Windows 7 64bit machine with 500GB hard disk and 8GB of Ram in the UK.
I have restored the iPod classic 160GB three times now to see if it was a hardware problem with no joy. Each time all the music restores properly as do the podcasts and all the items in TV programmes all appear to sync and work fine.
I have also tried to copy films into the TV Programmes to get around it with no joy. They always go to the films section to start with. It is just the Films library that does not sync - all others work perfectly. As a last resort I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes with no joy either.
I am technically savvy and have gone through the itunes and ipod settings but nothing appears to make a difference - This is the first time I have had to post here as I can usually solve the majority of the ipod anomilies but this one has me flummoxed.
Has the film encoding type changed in the newest itunes update? - Has this happened to anybody else and is it a hardware, software, or operating system problem.

Having uninstalled the current version 11.1.3.8 and loaded and older version of iTunes 10.7.0.21 I can now categorically confirm that the newest update seems to be causing the problem as the films and TV Programmes are syncing perfectly on this older version.
If you are going to do this please dont forget to remove the  ' iTunes Library.itl' file as this stops the older versions from running as I've just found out

  • Export for AppleTV - Settings messed up?

I have done it this way before (at least I thought this is how I did it):
File - Export - Using Quicktime Conversion - Format (Apple TV) -- name it and go...
Then drag this file to iTunes, and all is great... I can watch it on my iPhone or my AppleTV.
Last week I messed around with different export settings trying to get a short video small enough to email.
Now when I do the File-Export-etc to get a video into iTunes, the video's aspect ratio is messed up - it looks like it's squishing the 16:9 video into 4:3 - as if I have somehow messed up the preset for AppleTV.
My normal process is that I export 1 for iTunes to watch on my AppleTV, and I export 1 (File-Export-Quicktime Movie (self contained)) to keep as a "master" to burn DVDs, etc if I ever need to.
The "master" is in the correct aspect ratio, so I don't think it's something in the project - it won't play back on my computer, but that is another whole discussion, that I think is computer power related - see https://discussions.apple.com/message/16176561#16176561 if you want more info on that part.
How can I verify the settings that the AppleTV preset is using? Or should I be doing it another way?

    anyone?

  • Ideas for AppleTV firmware?

I was wondering if there was anywhere we can submit ideas for AppleTV firmware.  I have digitized my large DVD/Blu-ray collection for esier viewing on all our TV's and I was looking for more filter options (Like by Rating).  I was also looking for a quick scroll option (like the ipod does when you scroll through your music).  And even a search functoin for your movie/TV shows for your itunes library.  Now if I'm missing a setting somewhere then that will clear this all up.
    Thanks for your help.

As much as I would love it if the Apple TV was to have a Blu-Ray player, that will never happen. That is not what Apple is trying to do with this product. If you also look at the direction they are going, it would seem that Apple thinks everyone can do away with all types of media and just go strictly wireless and buy everything through iTunes. This is a real shame. It would appear that Apple just doesn't understand that most people, such as myself, do not want to be pushed into something they don't want. If the Apple TV had a blu-ray drive it would be the only thing I needed for my media center. Since it doesn't I have to either buy one or get something that already has it such as a PS3.

  • Movies for AppleTV

Besides iTunes, is there any other seller for AppleTV-ready movies? iTunes is fine but the selection is rather limited.

Considering that movies purchased through the iTunes store are copy protected with Apple's own encryption scheme I think it's unlikely that you will be able to find another source. Movies from other sources such as Amazon's Unbox service are also copy protected using Microsoft's encryption scheme so I doubt that you could convert them to Apple TV compatible m4v files.
There are other threads in this forum dealing with the ripping and converting of DVDs, so you might want to look around.
