Family history with photos, in Pages?

I inherited very old photo albums from my grandparents and parents. There are several hundred photos, which I want to preserve for my family. I'd like to scan them and add text to each photo - it wouldn't be printed out, I just want it on my computer then it can go onto a disc or whatever from there, to give to each of my sons.
It's going to be a big project, and I'll be putting a lot of time into it. I want to choose carefully - is Pages the way to go, or - ? I've heard that word processing programs usually don't deal well with a lot of photos and really large documents - that they often crash.
If anyone has any suggestions on the best way to handle this project I'd really appreciate the help.

You must be very anxious to get at those very old photos. Are they still in their original albums? Or have you removed them and put them in photo safe boxes or sleeves?
Yes, they have all been scanned from the original albums, using the best scanner software there is: VueScan:

They started life as (sometimes faded) 4"x2" prints but are now all digitized at 250dpi and capable of producing sharp black and white prints up to A4 size. VueScan (no I don't have shares in them!) is incredibly good at restoring old prints, and IMO worth every penny/cent.
They are backed up on three separate hard drives, and in different locations.
If you and your brother live close enough to collaborate on the history, you should have a great time with it - are you doing it soon?
Nothing in life is that simple! I live in SW England, he lives in Brussels, Belgium! Thank heavens for email and Skype! We are still discussing the very subject that you and I are: what to do now! Fortunately the original compilers of the old albums annotated every photo with who was on them and where they were taken, as well as the date. That makes life a LOT easier, but we want to add biographical notes to each person, to the extent that this is possible, as well as building a coherent narative. He knows more about our ancestors (beyond our grand-parents) than I do (he is 8 years older than me!), and I am better at the technical side, so between us we should get a decent result!
As for the family tree, that was compiled some time ago by a great aunt, who was able to go back as far as 1740, beyond which Danish church records (did I mention that I am Danish?) become very tricky and expensive to research. She stopped at around the time of my birth (the 1940s), so updating it has been easy!
'Wonderful stuff' you say. Indeed it is, for it is so much more than a collection of faces and dates. For example, my wife loves looking closely at some of the old photos to find paintings and other objects that we (or my brother and his family) now have. That brings 'family heirlooms' to life! And of course, looking at the fashions and interiors of bygone years is great fun also!
But back to the technical side:
The point you bring up - will our descendants have access to compatible software - is sure a good one - and I think it applies across the board. We're stuck in our own space in time, with our existing technology.
And yet you want to use Pages? A Mac only application? Hmmmm....!
I still go with my Option 4. Books created in the manner described can be printed in multiple copies, and of course are created digitally, so printing them can be repeated.

If Pages and the other applicatioins installed in the Applications in the root directory they can be used by everyone. By default all programs installed by the App store are installed in the Applications folder in the root. In other words, your family members should be able to use the programs. Can they not?

Are you sure PDF won't work? It should as what you're trying to do is pretty much what it is designed for (PDF - Portable Document Format). On a Mac anywone who receives the file should be able to see it in all its page layout glory by using the app Preview or Adobe Reader. Same on a PC, the file should be viewable as a PDF file using Adobe Reader and probably some other viewer (don't use PCs so not sure what other apps).
What application are you creating the file in and are you sure you're exporting it correctly in PDF format, fonts and images embedded?

What upload speed do I need to upload the XL photo books with over 25 pages?

I have just recently gotten a new Internet provider and the max upload speed I can get is 1mbps but I am only getting .4 mbps at the most. When trying to upload an XL photo book with over 26 pages it keeps failing to transfer/upload and the error message says to check the internet connection. I'm wondering what upload speed I need to upload? I need to cancel this internet provider before my free month runs out if 1mbps is not going to be fast enough.

Well I have my first order coming in tomorrow (according to Fedex) and I have my fingers crossed.
So far I haven't been able to find any local printers that will print and bind the books at a reasonable cost - best I've found so far is $200 (or more) per book.
Hardly cost effective for my relatively meager budget.
I've explored Asuka a littoe more, and their quality does appear to be superior at first glance, but it seems I am not able to take advantage of submitting my aperture-generated book directly. According to their templates I have to put everything together manually in Photohop. Great for end-control, but one thing that made me pursue this was the ability to generate a book inside Aperture using versions direct from collection (any changes I made to an original image were automatically incorporated in my book. Had I done it all manually, teh time/effort I'd be putting into the book with be well over 5x greater!
I've also looked at shutterfly.com so far - and they seem promising, and am wiating for my colleagues order to go through before I get too excited.
Either way, I hope to have my first printing this week - I'll keep ya posted!

You can drag and drop (this will result in a compressed JPG) or hold the alt key and drag and drop (this will copy the original). You can also select the pictures and choose Export from the File menu.

You do not have the properties in the Bookmarks Manager (Library), but you should have it if you right-click a bookmark the Bookmarks Toolbar or in the bookmarks sidebar.
On Mac you probably do not have it if you right-click an item in the Bookmarks menu (this menu is under control of the Mac OS), but I assume that this should work if you click the "Show your bookmarks" button on the Navigation Toolbar that is next to the star to bookmark the current tab and right-click an item in the bookmarks list that opens.

How do I add pages to a photo book with the same number of photos per page.

I want to add a photo book, select all the pages and tell the book to be 4 photos per page. And when I add new pages, I want those to have 4 photos.
When ever I add, it just selects a random page and then I have to manually change that page to have 4 photos. Is there an easier way to do this?

Family sharing with multiple apple ids

Just a question about family sharing. My husband and I have decided to have separate apple ids but family sharing allows us to share purchases but does this also include iCloud storage or do we each have 5GB. Also if we do this route with our son what happens to his purchases we've approved when he decides he doesn't want to be on family sharing when he's 18.

Each Apple ID has it's own 5 GB of iCloud Storage
Once you son turns 18, if he decides to leave the Family Sharing, any purchases made with his Apple ID will remain his and no longer available to the family.

Need Help/Advice with Photo Web Gallery coming from SQL Database

This is my first attempt at a database driven website. I assume what I am trying to accomplish should be fairly easy for more experienced but I am stuck at this point.
First, let me explain what I am trying to accomplish.
I want to create a thumbnail photo gallery displayed in columns and rows. I want to be able to hover over or click on the thumbnail image and have a lightbox script display the image over the thumb page. I am developing locally right now with intent to upload to the hosting site upon completion.
I am developing with ASP vbScript pages. I have an SQL database where the paths to the image thumbnails and pictures are stored in a table. On the gallery page, I have created a div tag to hold my image recordset. Within this div, I have inserted 3 absolute positioned divs to hold the pictureID, the pictureName and the image inserted as a datasource. I then inserted the information from the bindings panel of my recordset. Last, I used a horizontal looper extension from Tom Muck to get the thumbnails to display in columns and rows. Everything works up to this point just fine.
Now, I want to be able to hover or click on a thumnail image and have it displayed in a lightbox. I downloaded and used a javascript called Lightbox 2 which contains 3 javascript files and a css stylesheet. I inserted the files into the head tag like instructed to but could not get things to work properly. Here is where I need help. Currently, I am clicking on the thumbImage binding within the image Div and creating a link holder. I am then binding the larger pictureImage to it with the a.href selected in the bind to. I am then adding the command to call the lightbox javascript. Now, when I test my page, my thumbnail images do not show up (my alt text does in its place) but the links are in place and you can click on the alt text and it will return the correct larger image, but not in the lightbox, just in a new window with no styles.
Am I going about this correctly? Can you use lightbox scripts with data-driven galleries? Does anybody have any suggestions of what I may be doing wrong or missing? Are there better ways to go about accomplishing this?
Any help would be appreciated as this dynamic data thing has my head spinning. Although I know a database is needed to simplify the update and maintenance of the photos while allowing them to be searchable by keywords and tags also set up in the database.

As I explained, I am developing locally a the moment. I will see about getting the databased moved up to the hosting server and then provide a link for an example.
In the mean time, can you or anyone else explain a way that you would go about displaying an image thumbnail photo gallery laid out in rows / columns, with any lighbox script that would overlay the larger image over the existing page instead of opening a new browser window?
I don't have to use the method I tried to describe.
In all of the lightbox examples I have looked at thus far, they give instructions on how to append that javascript to a single static image or a group of static images, not images from a datasource. That is where I am getting confused.

Photo gallery page from iWeb '08 doesn't work for Mac OS X 10.3.9 user?

I have recently published a photo gallery page with comments on using iWeb '08 (latest update). Displays fine for me and apparently a lot of other mixed-platform users. But one user is saying that his eMac with Mac OS X 10.3.9 and the Safari of the day don't display the pictures. He gets the banner and background image for the gallery, but not the actual pictures. I asked him to try Firefox, but so far no reply on that.
Do the older versions of Safari work with content from iWeb '08?

Unfortunately this is not true. On an iMac G4 10.3.9 using Safari you cannot even view the photos, the photo page or even the web gallery itself. You just get a warning. Had I known that my friends and family would have a problem viewing photos I would have passed on the update. I find iLife 08 a very poor release from Apple and more trouble than it is worth.

But Kirk, they don't, none of them! and this kind of stuff just seems crazy to some of us. I wish that Apple would TELL US or advertise the facts like, Oh, you only get ONE gallery for each user on Web Gallery (useless) and Oh, you will not be able to edit 06 iWeb pages with 08 iWeb and the iLife 08 version of iPhoto you will not be able to view these galleries without upgrading to the latest Safari web browser. Yes we always expect some bugs with a major update but this is getting ridiculous.
I have not yet had anybody try downloading the newest version of Firefox that will work with 10.3.9. Do you know if that will make a difference? Thanks for your help.

IPhoto - Family book with lots of text

I would very much like to create an iPhoto book with photoes, but especially a lot of text about my family.
However, the design of iPhoto does not allow me to write more than two small columns of text on each page.
Do I really have to stop using iPhoto for this purpose?
For the time being I think I just have to type everything in Word, add the photoes and finally make an A4 print.
However, this is not the way I want my family book to look.
Can anybody help me?

You can create a custom, all text page by creating an 8.5 x 11 landscape layout in a 3rd party app like Word, Pages, etc. and adding your text to it in whatever layout you'd like. Then follow the instructions below to convert that page to a jpeg and import into iPhoto where you can add it to a page as a full page image:
Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3 - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE: If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto.
Here's a rough example of what you can achieve:
You'll have total control of the column widths, no of columns, margin size, etc. in the app that you choose.
