Family of 4 has 2 computers and 3 ipods - exceeding activation limit

Ok, so here's a question that has been bugging me since a while, but is bound to become a real problem for buying more apple devices soon.
iTunes, with its current 5 device activation limit is not compatible anymore with the average family, that all likes to use and buy stuff from apple and itunes.
Here's our situation:
We've got one macbook, one pc and 3 ipods. So we've hit the 5 device limit.
Now we've seen this new ipad come along and would really like to buy it, but we won't be able to use itunes on it to let it play our previously purchased songs.
Next, I'm probably buying an iphone, which is going to make the problem even worse.
So, I haven't found anything through browsing the web as to how apple wants to address situations like these, and I dare a guess that I am not the only one living in a family of 4, that are bound to exceed the 5 device limit.
You thoughts?
Cheers,
Frank

Thanks, I didn't know that.
So what category is the ipad going count for? A computer or an iPod (type of device)?
As roaminggnome pointed out, none of us know the answer. However, I can tell you that an Apple TV doesn't count toward the 5 authorizations. It appears, at this time, that only computers count as computers.

  • Please can someone help me? Have iphone 4 and just returned home from abroad where the phone worked fine. Now it wont receive wifi. It picks up signal and shows on phone but cant connect to internet. Computers and ipod all working ok

Hi, please can someone help me?
Have just returned home from abroad where my iphone 4 worked perfectly.
Now at home it wont receive wifi. It picks up the signal which shows in phones display but cant connect to the internet. Computers and ipod all working fine so I assume it must be a problem with the phone.
Have checked that wifi is turned on and tried resetting phone to no avail

    Hello melissa82686,
From your description, it sounds like you may have been using the SMS feature of Continuity in iOS 8. If this is the case and it has somehow become misconfigured after a recent change, you may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
    SMS
With Continuity, all the SMS and MMS text messages you send and receive on your iPhone also appear on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch. Even if the person you’re communicating with doesn’t have an iPhone. And regardless of what phone they have, you can reply from whichever device is closest to you, including your iPad or Mac. You can also initiate a  conversation by clicking a phone number in Safari, Contacts, or Calendar.
To use Continuity for SMS and MMS with your iPhone and your Mac, iPad or iPod touch
Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch need to use iOS 8.1, and your Mac needs to use OS X Yosemite.
Sign in to iMessage on your iPhone, your other iOS devices, and your Mac using the same Apple ID.
    On your iPhone:
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By, and add a check to both your phone number and email address.
Go to Messages > Text Message Forwarding, and enable the device(s) you would like to forward messages to.
Your Mac, iPad, or iPod touch will display a code. Enter this code on your iPhone to verify the SMS feature.
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity - Apple Support

  • Itunes has detected and iPod in recoverty mode.

Every time I connect my Nano (2nd gen 8gb), iTunes gives me the message
"iTunes has detected and iPod in recovery mode. You must restore thsi Ipod before it can be used with iTunes."
So I go through the restore process, and it resets and then, comes back into the same message. I am in an endless restore loop.
I have tried different usb ports, computers, reinstalled the software, reset the ipod. But iTunes keeps wanting to restore the iPod.

  • ITunes has detected and Ipod in Recovery Mode...

After in stalling ITunes 7 on my Windows XP machine, I received the following error when I tried to sync my IPod. "ITunes has detected and Ipod in Recovery Mode. You must restore this IPod before it can be used with ITunes." After completing the restore, it tells me to leave my IPod connected. Then it just comes back with the exact same message about recovery mode. Now I have an Ipod with no songs on it, and I am unable to sync it with ITunes any longer. Does anyone have any solutions to this bug. Everything was working perfectly prior to installing ITunes version 7.0.1.8.

I had the exact same problem with my new 8 gb Nano. I tried putting the Nano into disk mode as was suggest in another discussion thread, but that did not make any difference. I finally discovered that my shutting the computer down and not logging onto the network after it rebooted, Itunes was able to recognize the Nano correctly, and proceeded with installing my music. If you are using a home or work network I would try not logging into it before you update your Ipod.
    Good Luck!

  • Can I use iphone 5 as a camera and ipod without activating the phone service

Can I buy a new Iphone 5 and use as a camera and Ipod, wtihout activating the phone?

Yes, you can. There still needs to be a SIM card in the phone if the phone hasn't been set up yet; the SIM does not have to be active.

    Hello,
what concerns your wish about an uinstaller, so you should use
https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs3-product-downloads.html >>> AND note this "Read before you download a CS3 product". And esp, "You need your CS3 serial number to complete the installation" but this shouldn't be a problem for you, because you had an official version and so you can use all these informations like https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html

  • How to sync Contacts and Calendars between 2 computers and ipod?

I'm having difficulty syncing contacts on 2 computers and an iPod. Although I'm able to sync contacts from an iBook (G4/OS10.4) to an iPod Classic, when I attempt to sync the iPod to an empty address book on an Mac Pro (Intel/OS10.4) the synch goes the wrong way (and deletes the contacts on the iPod. What gives? Is there any way to sync the contacts on all 3 devices (iPod and 2 computers)? If so, how?
    Same questions for Calendar...
    Thanks.

As Julian points out, the present means of synchronization under Mac OS X 10.4 and later involves an entirely different technology than that originally used. You can read a technology brief here.
It has nothing at all to do with your perceived 'greed' on the part of Apple. Your iPod is essentially a read-only device, and cannot push changes back to the framework.
As he points out, there are third-party alternatives to explore, including multiuser packages of BusySync and the use of individual Google calendar accounts as intermediaries for single-user remote cross-platform synchronization.

  • HT1551 My Apple TV Home Only Has 'Computers' And 'Settings'. Isn't There Supposed To Be Youtube And Netflix And Stuff? I signed in to my iTunes account AND Connected to a wifi

Before I updated my Apple TV, It had everything, 'YouTube' , 'Netflix' And the iTunes Store. I just updated it and connected to my WiFi network and signed in to my Itunes account. After that there wasnt anything in the home screen, execpt for 'computers' and 'settings'. Any help?

This always implies the AppleTV is not seeing the internet when it starts up, as it seems to acquire available category content from there.
Restart your router and unplug and restart your AppleTV - does that help?

  • Newbie - Be gentle - Using multiple computers and IPods

I have 3 kids wanting to use my computer and a separate computer at their other parents' house for ITunes. Can this be done? How? We have already had problems with ITunes erasing songs from one computer etc. Any help appreciated.

you need to set up the ipods for manual synching go to edit>prefernces iPod tab. This way you can add music from either PC without deleting what is on the iPod

  • When I connect my IPod, a message comes up stating itunes has detected and ipod but it could not be properly identified

I have installed, uninstalled and installed itunes and restarted my computer and reset my ipod and it is still not "identifying" my ipod. What am I doing wrong?

    Morning tjmay523,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:

Certain phone connectivity software from vendors such as Samsung, Nokia, Bora, Novatel, and Sony may also cause this issue.
    Hope this helps,

  • Ive had my iPod classic for some time now, and up to now have been using my laptop to sync songs from iTunes.  Unfortunatley, the laptop has died and I'm thinking of buying a iPad.....but how do i now get any songs downloaded from iTunes to my iPod?

I've had my iPod classic for some time now, and up to now have been connecting it to my laptop to sync any downloaded tunes from iTunes.  Unfortunately, the laptop has died and I'm thinking of buying a iPad.....but how do I now get any songs downloaded from iTunes to my iPod?

If an iPod is set to update automatically it will be associated with a particular library. If you connect that iPod to a different computer or a different library on the same computer you get the the message you are referring to. "The iPod "iPod Name"is linked to another another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library". To use an iPod on multiple computers you change the update method to "manually manage songs and playlists". You can also use multiple iPods on a single computer so you will be able to connect both of your iPods to your existing iTunes. Connect the new iPod and follow the on screen instructions, iTunes will open and update your iPod.
    For info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Transferring itunes and ipod contents from family comp to new laptop

"how do i get my itunes and ipod contents that i've downloaded and bought onto my new laptop?"
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

"When i sync my ipod it wants to erase all my songs"
When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • My PC crashed. Before crash I had it an office Mac, an iPhone, an iPod and an iPad. That's 2 computers and 3 deivces.  Or is it 5 authorized devices

My PC crashed. Before crash I had it an office Mac, an iPhone, an iPod and an iPad. That's 2 computers and 3 deivces.  Or is it 5 authorized devices?  Anyway, since the PC crash I bought an iMac and my office Mac was replaced by a MacBook pro.  I moved my iTunes files from my office Mac to my MacBook.  I moved my PC iTunes files to my iMac from my unaffected external hard drive.
I am now totally confused regarding what is authorized and what is not!  Only three devices appear in my iTunes account.  I "removed" the PC.  Still I am told that I can't download MY apps to my new iMac because I have 5 authorized computers.  Really?  Actually I have NO authorized computers.  Only one that has my apps still (my office Mac).
If I deauthorize all I know I can start fresh.  That makes sense.  What has be balking at the idea is the "one time per year" deauthorization!  What is the point?  Give me an accurate list allow me to deauthorization and authorize the devices I wish.  It is MY account with MY purchases,
    Advice please?

Authorization ONLY applies to computers.  NOT ipads/iphones.ipod/Apple tvs.  ONLY computers.
Deauthorize all, then authorize the active computers.
