Family Share and blocking purchases

Why has apple decided that 14 and older is an appropriate age for me to give my child access to my credit card?  Shouldn't I have the option to turn on purchase request for any family member, at any age, if it is my credit card on the line?   I would like to set up family sharing but since I can not at least review and approve what my teenage children purchase with my money I will not set it up.
For those of you in the same situation I have a round about solution I have been using for a few years now.
Set up your kids accounts with their own account but go on to their device and set up the app store with your main account and turn on require password.
This works but is a bit of a pain since they have to actually bring me their device for me to put the password in.
The other problem with this is that they can not purchase items on their own accounts.
My kids are good with it.  I pay for the phones and we have rules for them to have them.  I just wish apple made it a little easier on me.

Hagame,
I find it odd about the family purchase thing too. Thank you for your insight as I thought you could set it up for any kid no matter what the age. After coming across your post I noticed that that I was wrong and you are right. I also like your solution for now. I wanted to encourage you to give Apple feedback about this, as this is a user to user forum and there is no saying wether or not Apple will see your concerns or comments. https://www.apple.com/feedback/
I too will be sending feedback. Once again Thank you for your informative post.

  • Family Share and iTunes Library

So how well does the iTunes library play with Family Share?
Currently my wife and I share the same iTunes library. I sync both of our iPhones on iOS8, and her iPad with the same iTunes library. The iTunes library uses our joint iCloud account that we share and make purchases with. We also have our own iCloud accounts for email, messaging etc...
Can I continue syncing all our devices to our current iTunes library?

Here's what I'm finding from extreme trial and error personal experience. This is based on dropping the device as one of the 10 allowed on my account and no longer having the device use my iTunes account, but their own subjected to mine through the new Family Share feature.
1- The other devices will lose iTunes Match, if you have it.
2- I can see NO way to get to the content on iTunes 11.4 on my mac (BIG problem).
3- The only way I can see is download them on the phone, link the phone back to the other mac.
3- The other family member is completely confused with how things work now.
4- I have to physically go see what they download it no longer pops up in my library. I personally liked this as I've found some good songs and apps I would have never seen otherwise.
In your case what will happen is everything will disappear from your wife's devices. She will then have to go back into her iTunes on her iPhone or iPad and download whatever she can. There will be some things that disappear.
Personally - don't do it. If you have less than 10 devices and don't need the space there, there is NO reason to move over to this crap.

  • How do I Family Share in-app purchases?

How do I Family Share in-app purchases?   The free app only allows certain areas to open. An in-app purchase unlocks the full app capability.  I cannot Family Share the in-app purchase. How do I do this?

There is a way to get around it, as it worked for me!
I turned on family sharing for my son. Now I have set up an Apple ID account for him too. His ipad was under my Apple ID account but I have since restored the ipad to factory settings, setting it up as his own now (you don't need to do this step, but I chose to do it so everything on his ipad is under his account now).
When I logged into the App store on his ipad, using his Apple ID account I can access the apps that I have purchased (I being the main account holder). However I had the same issue as you, that I couldn't family share the in-app purchases.
To get around this on his ipad, I logged off from the app store with his Apple ID account and then logged into it again using my Apple ID account. Therefore I could download the original apps that I had purchased for him + the in-app purchases. Then I logged out of the app store using my Apple ID account and logged in again using his Apple ID Account. Bingo now the full app is on his ipad!
Then I synced his ipad to the itunes library on my PC, so the apps are now in his library. It would be also wise to do a backup so you don't have to repeat this process again.....
    Cheers

  • Today my daughter could download 2 aps on her phone without my permission.  We are part of family share and her settings show that she needs my permission to download anything.

Today my daughter could download 2 apps on her phone without my permission.  We are part of family share and her settings show that she needs my permission to download everything.  How could she download the apps if I did not giver her permission.  I thought that was the point of family sharing in the cloud.

Yes, Family sharing is almost not useable this way. Once you activate it you won't be able to load some of the best/essential apps even though they are free. But they are blocked by the Patriarch of the Family. :-(...
I do not understand why this issue does not get bigger Attention? Does noone use familiy sharing yet? Or do they activate it right after they have loaded all those essential apps beforehand?

  • About the ios8, family share, and credit card info.

Ok well I love the idea of family share and the IOS8 idea, but I didn't like the idea of putting a credit card info into this family share and thing why can't it work with just a gift card. It's about the same thing isn't it. Its like if the gift card gets to the point where the user needs funds why can't we have that option. I mean I'm an Apple Fan and honestly the gift card or credit card is the same idea the company is not losing any money and well. I feel that the customers should have an option to how they would like to make payments. please respond to this if anybody can tell me why we can't have that option. Thank You.

If there is credit card information, exceeding the value of a gift card just means the credit card is then charged.  If multiple family members tried to purchase at the same time and there was only gift card credit in the account they could get caught in a billing problem if the system didn't keep up with the charges fast enough.  Requiring a billing channel that is not based on a fixed value is just a way to make sure funds are available for all family members.
And the Ask to Buy restriction is a way to keep underage members from buying without controls.

  • Family share and automatic downloads

I recently upgraded all my family to iOS 8 and wanted to try and set each one an iCloud account, there are several things that doesn't work with family share and I wanted to make sure that it's not cause I dont k ow how to activate them.
    1. iTunes match is not working on the family devices, only on my account
    2. I can't use the icloud storage I have to backup other family devices
    3. I can't set up auto download of app so I could get my kids new games and they will automatically be downloaded to their iPads
if you know how to make those issues work I would be really happy!
    thanx

  • Family share and deleting contacts

Can I delete a contact from my Apple ID on family share and not affect other people's Apple ID contacts? Example, two people on family share have the same contact, but 1 wants to delete the contact and the other does not.

    Hi courtneyfromsan francisco,
I understand that you have some questions about Family Sharing and your contacts. According to the information in the following article, Family Sharing does not connect to Contacts, and any changes you make to your Contacts will only be affected on machines signed in with your iCloud account:

  • Family share and non itunes purchased music

My wife and I are going to get an ipad mini for the house that we will use for a lot of music storage and entertainment for the house. We have a TON of cd's we purchased back in the day. If I load those into my iTunes, will my wife be able to access that music using family share? Or can you only access music that was purchased? She wants to be able to get that music on her phone.
    Thanks!

Okay, so I did as you said, and tried to remove all music from my iphone, and nothing changed on the phone.  The unplayable music and playlists all still show up and the purchased music is still playable and on the phone despite removing it all.
I just now told it to not sync any music at all (unchecked the larger sync music tab) and for some reason it repeatedly re-checked itself.  After 7 or so attempts I got it to only put on 10 songs (idk why any or even why these particular are on)  but now I'm going to try re-adding songs back on.
YESSSSSSS! IT WORKED!!! GAWAAHAHA FINALLY, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • Family share isn't working - we set it up and it was working fine for a few weeks then in the last few days it's stopped, we can't see the other members in our family share and it says we aren't set up but it doesn't allow us to confirm and reset up

Help!  We set up family share a few weeks ago, and it was working fine with the organizer and two additional members.  The three of us could see each other on app and iTunes stores and could view each other's purchased items.  Then ... All of that disappeared.  We cant see each other's profiles any more and we definitely can't view any purchased items.  In addition, when we try to go in and jump start by downloading a free app or logging out and back of itunes, nothing works.  It seems to show we have family sharing in the iCloud settings, and when we click the Apple ID it asks us to confirm, and we confirm, and are asked if we want to change accounts because then we trigger the 90 day freeze period.  And we aren't changing any accounts - just trying to confirm the same accounts to get family share to work!  We are all on the same ios 8.1.3 and os, so I don't know what else to try!

No, I am a media professional who uses his MacBook Pro to connect to external monitors, and needs to continue to do so.  I don't want Apple TV.  I want my laptop to work again, like it's supposed to.  Like it used to.
I have a demonstration this week at work that requires me to plug into an LCD screen and I am hoping to have this resolved by then.  I am trying to convince my department to buy a Retina Mac and thousands of dollars worth of video software for live shows, and if I can't make it work, then I can't exactly convince them (or myself) to buy what I have been researching.
Again, I don't want wireless video or Apple TV.  I don't want to buy any more stuff.  I want to know why my Thunderbolt to HDMI cable stopped working after my update, and how to fix it...preferably before this meeting.

  • Family share and iTunes Match

I am interested in signing up for iTunes match, but only if I can share the music media with my wife. I understand that if she signs in with my apple account she would have access to all the content, but I don't want to do that.
If I start using the family share option, will my content from iTunes match also be available to her or just the purchases made through apple?

    Mhollenbeck,
Family Sharing enables sharing of content purchased from the iTunes Store.  It does not enable general sharing of all the content in your library:
When you join a family, you'll be asked to confirm the Apple ID that you regularly use....  Purchases from this account will be shared with your family members.
It sounds like Home Sharing would meet your needs better.  Read here and decide:

  • Can my minor daughter have her own account as my family member and charge purchased to her own credit card?

Currently I family-share my iTunes with my minor daughter.  She purchases songs which are charged to my bank card.  l would like to set her up with her own apple id so she can purchase her own songs and use her own bank card, but still share so I know what she is purchasing and how much she is spending.  is this possible?

    Bank card - no.
    Gift cards - yes.
    Family purchases and payments:
"After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer's card."

  • Family Sharing and Individual Purchases (Suggestions)

I have recently updated to iOS 8, as i am sure many others or perhaps millions have done as well. Me and my other half tried the family share option and it works for the most part very well, BUT... We seriously think it is lacking a few options for granularity.
regardless of who the organizer is the option of who'c Billing information to use for purchases should be selectable and not just limited to the organizer Below are some of our suggestions for Apple....
    Suggestions
For instance if my wife and I are on the Family Share we should have the following options:
    1) A way for identifying a family share member as parent or child (Child being no older than 21)  this will help establish groups
    2) Family members should be presented with an option to use their own payment method associated with their individual iTunes Account (as default method).
         a)  If wife is Organizer i shouldn't be forced to have my purchases paid for from her account when i have my own payment info for my own iTunes account.
         b)  Any child on the family share who have their own banking information on file for their account should be presented with a choice to use their own payment
information or request authorization from parents to have them (the parent approving the purchase) pay for purchase. Depending on which parent approves
the request would determine which parent would be responsible for his/her child's iTunes purchase.
         c) If Child has no method of payment on their iTunes account then any purchase request would automatically be routed to the parents to request purchase
               authorization
By having a msg such as "Request for purchase authorization sent to parent/guardian" (or something along those lines) it would still allow the parents to be anonymous as to who authorized the purchase for the child. Family members of Divorced Parents (further suggestions)
For Children of divorced parents this would also allow the flexibility, from their point of view, to still have mom or dad play a role in the purchasing decision.
         d)  Children 21 and younger should also have the ability to be part of, no more than, 2 family share plans while parents can only be assigned to 1 family share plan Example of the two different groups a child may belong to..
              a) Plan 1 - (Home A) Father / Step Mother (assuming both parents have remarried)
              b) Plan 2 - (Home B) Mother / Step Father (assuming both parents have remarried)
When child is at "Home A" family from Home B can still authorize his purchase in the event the Parents from Home A do not approve it.
Last but not least - Approval request sent from children to parents have a expiration time of 15 minutes meaning if the request is not acknowledge / approved after 15 minutes a message could be sent to requestor indicating "...request has timed out due to no response..."
    Conclusion
These are some suggestions that we feel will make Family Share Plan more usefully to parents of children and to accommodate one of many different family situations.

    Carlton,
Family Sharing works best when there is an adult (the "organizer") who is paying for the purchases of one or more kids.
What you are describing might work if you always make sure to have a credit balance on your account.  However, the situation would work more smoothly if you each buy your own stuff and use Home Sharing rather than Family Sharing.

  • Trying to set up family share and the invitation does not show the accept decline option so we can't accept the invitation.  Anyone know how to fix?

invitation to family share does not have the accept or decline option to choose

Several things here so let me attempt to clarify.
For iCloud the reason the contacts where removed from he other device is because you updated your contacts, in this case deleted them, and then iCloud updated the other device to match. By deleting the iCloud account on the device it will stop the device from using that iCloud account and therefore nothing will change on the other device. By using a seperate Apple ID you can still use the features of iCloud, Find My iPhone comes to mind, without your content (contacts, message etc.) merging with the other device
For iTunes, you cannot use two Apple IDs for one account however if you use the same account iTunes on your computer will keep the content on each device seperate very nicely. You can also configure the settings for iTunes and the App store on each device to keep the content from automatically downloading to the other device. What I meant by share apps and music is this. What happens if you find a game, lets say Minecraft, that you really like and it cost, as Mincraft cost, $6.99USD. You buy it and play for a while and then you realize that your husband really likes the game as well. If you both use the same Apple ID for iTunes he can download the $7.00ish game to his device at no additional charge. If you use seperate Apple IDs for iTunes well... it look like he will also be paying for the game to have it on his account. Same goes for Music and Movies
I hope that clears things up. Let me know if you have anymore question.
