Family Sharing, how do I do it?

How do I add someone to Family Sharing?

Hello headfx,
The steps below detail how to go about inviting someone to join your family group.
Invite people to join your family
Use these steps in iOS 8:
Go to Settings > iCloud > Family > Add Family Member.
Enter your family member's name or email address.
Follow the onscreen instructions. After you send the invitation, you can check its status under the person's name in Settings > iCloud > Family.
Use these steps in OS X Yosemite:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
Click Manage Family.
Click +, then follow the onscreen instructions.
You can also use these steps to create an Apple ID for a child and add them to your family group. When you create an account for a child, you must use a credit card as the payment method as part of providing your parental consent. After you create the child's Apple ID, you can change your payment method back to a debit card if you choose.

To remove Audiobooks depending on the type of Audiobook ie a series of mp3 files you will find under music and probably have to deselect the album name to remove it. I don't have any of these as I download from Audible or I use Audiobook Builder to stictch together mp3 files into m4b files. To find these Click on Books you will immediately see a section for books (in reality ebooks). Scroll down past that and you will see Audiobooks where you can select and deselect. Deselect the required Audiobooks and Click Sync

• When on family sharing how can I use the credit on my account instead of the family credit card?

I have a credit of $5.90 that already existed before being added to family sharing. The only pay option is the family credit card, and not my existing credit. I want to finish up my credit first. How can I do this? I've tried on my iPad, my iPhone, and they don't work. I decided to try my laptop and still no use.

Hi,
Are you talking about changing the Apple ID used for purchases in iTunes? If so go to 'Settings->iTunes & App Store-> then 'tap' on the Apple ID that appears and click Sign Out on menu that appears. You can now login with a different Apple ID.

• Family sharing - how to create a separate account?

My son (4) has his own ipad, but I've always used my Apple ID to purchase apps for him. I'm trying to set up family sharing. Recently I read on Apple's website:
Kids under 13 can have an account too.
Now kids under 13 can have their own Apple IDs. As a parent or legal guardian, the family organiser creates the child’s Apple ID and adds the child to the family group. Ask to Buy is turned on by default, but the organiser can also limit the content kids have access to on their devices through Restrictions on an iOS device or parental controls in OS X and iTunes.
How can I set this up for him. As I've tried creating an Apple ID for him but I get this message You are not eligible to create an account at this time.
I'm assuming because he is under 13.
When I do eventually create an account for him, will I be able to share previously purchased apps that I have purchased before setting up his account?

Found info on how to set up account which was successful:
Age is also dependant on the country.

• Family Sharing - How does child receive msgs & email?

I added my 8 year old son to my Family Sharing. I want to send him emails and iMessages from my iPhone to my iPad which he uses frequently. When I attempt to send him a message from my iPhone or Mac, using his @icloud email address, I get errors saying this cannot be done. I am also unable to send him emails at that iCloud address. How do we set this up? I have looked in Settings on all my devices and no luck finding the steps.

I do want my daughter to be able to download apps or updates to existing apps even when she is not with me, but that doesn't seem possible without sharing passwords.
That is indeed not possible. She'll either need to re-acquire all those apps through her own iTunes Store account, you'll have to give her the password to your account, or you'll have to do all the updating for her.
Regards.

• Family sharing how does it work

I would like to know how it works and to set it up

Hi Lillian,
Family Sharing is a new iTunes offering that allows one responsible adult (the "Family Organizer") to take financial responsibility for one or more minors, even if they would otherwise would be too young to buy from iTunes. The Family Organizer must have a credit card. Members of the family group can share purchases for as long as they stay in the group.
The following document has a good summary:
Family Sharing: A new way to bring harmony to your family’s digital life.

• Family sharing, how to set default payment to none.

why can't I set my default payment to none in family sharing? I'd like to only us gift cards. Makes no sense. Gives my family a free pass to purchase whatever they want.

I'm pretty sure higher access superceedes, so you could set up a group with no actual access, just to get the preferences working, then their individual security will dictate what they can do. I haven't tested this fully, but I beleive this is how it will work.
As far as setting the preferences, go into the admin console and right click on the group, then select Preferences. To apply the group preferences to a user, add the user to the group, then right click on the user, select preferences and from the upper left corner, use the drop down to select the active preference, in this case, it will be the group you created and added them to.

HTH

• Family sharing - how to see allowed but not yet downloaded apps?

I am using family sharing with some of my relatives - and I have to ask for permission since I am still under 18 years old. Is there a way to display a list of all apps the family organiser approved - even if I haven't buyed them yet (I pressed - by accident - on the cancel button instead of entering my password and can't remember the name of the app)?
Thanking you in anticipation

Although this will hide it from their purchase list, I don't think there is any way to prevent them from re downloading once permission has been granted.
They could search the App Store & re download it without you getting notification since you originally gave permission.
I guess you could remove their Apple ID entirely & create a new one but that might not be practical.

• How to setup Family Sharing iOS 8

Ok, here's a scenario that I'm sure many people will currently be in - a central Apple ID for purchasing App Store items that is shared between family members, and individual Apple ID's for each family member for email, calendar, contacts etc.
With ios8 family sharing how do you setup so that everyone can still access shared apps from the original "shared I'd" but also operate under family sharing with individual Apple id's?
Example, say we use the Apple id [email protected] as the current shared ID which has all books, music, apps purchased and has a current store credit balance. This one is setup as the AppStore ID on each device. Each family member then has setup as their icloud Apple id a personal Apple id such as [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] for email, contacts, iMessage etc.
I'm assuming the organiser becomes [email protected] but if that is on my device, can I still invite my own [email protected] on that same device to retain access to my emails, contacts, iMessage etc ?
Sounds as though Apple has done the right thing for new setups, but not necessarily covered existing users who followed their previous options - which came with its own shortcomings.
Please help

Hello,
It should be in Settings > iCloud and right underneath your iCloud account at the top, there should be an option to setup Family Sharing. Then it is following the steps outlined. Take a look at the page below for everything on setting up Family Sharing and also creating an account for child that is under 13. I have aslo provided an image of where it should be located under your iCloud account.

• HT201058 How much iCloud data do you get using Family Sharing?

If I add both of my daughters to my Family Sharing, how much iCloud storage do we get between the 3 of us?
Is it worth joining ID's, if we only have 5GB to share between us, considering we are all using over 4GB each now.

I would also like to know how I can merge a Apple ID with another ID?
I set up my daughters ID's about 3 years ago, but I had to add 10 years to their Date Of Birth, else I could not get them ID's. Now when I have added my daughter to my Family Sharing, it states she is an adult, and it will not let my change her DOB. Apple says I have to setup a child ID within Family Sharing.
So, can I change a Adult ID to a Child ID, or merge a Adult ID to a new Child ID?

• From Shared itunes account to ios 8 Family Sharing

In my family everyone has his/her own icloud account for sync and backup and we all use a common i tunes account so we can use one credit card and share bought apps music etc..
Now that ios8 will come, with family sharing, how will this work?
if i set the shared itunes account as the main account, i'll "loose" one of the family members (me) as i have a separate icloud account. i don't want that. is the solution to move my icloud account to the former shared itunes account?
also, will ios 7 users (i.e. with iphone 4) be able to be included in the new family sharing?

As far as I know this is the only info that Apple have so far released about Family Sharing : http://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/family-sharing/
It's not clear to me from that page how you will be set up e.g. whether in your case you could set up the shared iTunes account as the 'organiser' account and then use that to invite each of your own cloud accounts into it. It may be a case of waiting until further details are released later this year.
I'm assuming that a device will have to be on iOS 8 to benefit from it - the bottom of that page includes :
Some features require iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. Some features require a Wi‑Fi connection. Some features are not available in all countries. Access to some services is limited to 10 devices.

• Family Sharing and child account

Hello,
I recently bought an iPod for my child and wanted her to have her own account instead of using mine because I didn't want her to have all my messages going to her. So, I set up her iTunes account and had to change her birthday to allow for it. (I know, wasn't the best decision) Then I realized with Family sharing you could setup a child under the age restriction so that she would have her own account and I would be able to control her purchases and things.
Unfortunately I am not able to change her birthday to the correct one.
I saw someone mention delete the iTunes account and then recreate it, but I don't see where I can do that. I want to either change her birthday or somehow start over from the beginning. I don't want to create a new account using a different email address, I want to create one with her email address under family sharing.
how can I do this? I want to set her up in family sharing as a child, not an adult. But her iTunes account is already setup as an adult. How do I change it?

Hey avalanche_mt,
Congratulations on getting an iPod for your daughter, I am sure she will enjoy it very much.
It is possible to change the birthdate associated with an Apple ID if the current birthdate shows the account holder is over 18 years of age. If you are using a Mac, sign in to that account in System Preference > iCloud and change the date there. See this article for reference -
OS X Yosemite: Change iCloud account information
You can also change this information on the web at appleid.apple.com. Select Manage your Apple ID, enter the Apple ID and password, go to Password and Security.
Note that the birthdate can only be changed one time, and that accounts that show a birthdate of under 18 can not be changed.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Be well,
Brett L

• Family sharing with apple ID not primary iCloud ID

hi! before family sharing existed, we set up a new apple id in iTunes (a gmail address) for my children to share so they could have the same purchases on their iPads. they also had their own unique apple id's for mail, contacts, etc. now that we're trying to work with family sharing, how do we accept the invitation for this account, as it's not technically associated with an iCloud account. their iPads, my mac, my iPad and phone all have our own iCloud accounts. from what i've read, the recipient of the invitation needs to be logged into their account on a device or a mac, but i suspect it means logging in to iCloud in order to accept the email invite, not just logging into iTunes. but if i do that on my mac or other device, it wants to delete everything else from my primary apple ID account. is there a way to accept the invitation in an email if it's not a primary iCloud email?

yesterday i've played with that issue also. Here are my results:
When you assign an appleid to your user account, you have to verify it's properly linked. You can do so by going to the users & groups pref pane. unlock it and right click on your user account. You should see "additional options" then. Go for it. Now take a look to the "Aliases" Section. You should see the mail adress of your linked appleid there. right below there should follow a line, starting with "com.apple.idms.appleid....". This seems to be some kind of Unique ID of your AppleID. If this entry is present, your AppleID is correctly linked to your account. If there is only the mail adress, the linking was not successfull. In this case, make sure you have Internet connection. This is important, because the information of the AppleID must be taken from apple's servers. so if you link the AppleID without Internet Connection, it will not work at all. After you have ensured a working internet connection, remove and reassign the AppleID to your account. After that, the entries should be OK.
When you have done this on both computers, you now should be able to connect a remote computer using your AppleID. But only for Filesharing. Screen Sharing seems not to work this way at the moment. I have played around about 2h yesterday without finding a clue to get this authentication method working.
After reading around in the web for a while, i found several posts which indicate that this feature only work, if you connect to the other mac using the IP Adress and not the hostname. Because i personally do not have the possibility to check that at the moment, maybe someone else can check this. Just go to safari and enter "vnc://IPofRemoteMac" in the adress bar. Connection should be established using IP adress then. Maybe this works

• How can I Migrate/Split itunes/icloud account for a large family now that they have family sharing

Ok, now that Apple has finally come out with family sharing I need to get things sorted out and I think it is going to be a mess. I have 6 family members (my spouse and 4 children) all sharing/using one itunes account. For parental reasons this made perfect sense. Now with the the advent of family sharing and such we have alot of sorting and migrating to do and I am very unsure how to go about it. Here is what we have.
Myself - I have a 64GB iPad 3 and a 64GB iPhone 5
Spouse - 64GB iPhone 5
Children - x4 16GB iPhone 5C (pink, blue, green, and a yellow)
We have had one itunes account now for several years, we used to have x4 16GB iphone 4's and a 16GB iPod touch 4 so we needed it to be shared at the time. We all have different Game Center ID's and Facetime/iMessages are all setup to the phone numbers (aside from mine which also uses the itunes e-mail). We currently have 1 upgraded icloud account with 200GB of storage on it (love the new tiers). So here are the questions.
1) How do I go about using and isolating all the devices so they can all use the iCloud storage? Right now if I try and setup backups by device under the what to backup there is no simple "Full Backup" option, they have all the categories separated. I cannot backup my daughters contacts without forcing a merging of them and so on. Same thing with Documents and Data. Would I need to setup a different iCloud account for each device now?
2) iTunes Music/App purchases. Now that they have a family sharing function I am assuming it would be a good time to separate all the devices (aside from my personal iPad/iPhone). If I understand correctly we need to setup a new itunes account for each and link them with family sharing, does this then allow us to disperse/move items from a singular to the multiple account (at least a one time option to move around) or would it simply be shared off the original account? My daughter for example will be 18 next summer and as such no longer under our care. How do we move her items to her account? She has a lot of purchased Music. Now keep in mind I am talking about an account for someone who was 12 when she had her first device and as such needed to be under her parents.
I just want to state that repurchasing things is NOT an option, and to be frank, according to Canadian laws pertaining to *licensing* we actually own the product if we paid for it and have the right to transfer the ownership thereof. This issue went through the courts regarding used copies of OEM editions of Microsoft Windows several years ago and they closed the legal *license* vs ownership separation.

Go to appleid.apple.com to manage the ID, sign in and select to the Name, ID and Email Addresses section, then change the birth date on the bottom right. At the present time you may not be able to enter the correct birth date, but others have had success changing the year to 2000, or the date to 1/1/2001, both of which will have child ID status.

• How do you add an iTunes Gift Card so that all purchases of any members of a Family Sharing Group can use the credit?

How can all family members of a Family Sharing Group use a gift card that has been been applied to the iTunes master account? I added a gift card to our master iTunes account for my grandson, and even though he's a family sharing group member, none of the purchases I have approved from his requests have used the gift card credit. A search of the iTunes support site failed to turn up anything that even remotely addresses this topic. It would seem reasonable to assume that any purchase made by any family member should be able to use the gift card credit since all purchases go through the master account, but this does not appear to be the case.

Regarding your statement about the gift card balance being used if redeemed to the organizers account - http://www.apple.com/feedback.
Regarding redeeming the gift card to the child's account, it is the same as redeeming to yours. You have to be signed in to the iTunes store using the child's apple ID, then redeem the gift card there. If you already redeemed the card on your ID, you won't be able to redeem it again.
