Family Sharing killed my kids emails

I was learning about family sharing.
I learned DO NOT create an Apple ID with their EXISTING EMAIL if they are a minor. You must use an icloud apple ID.
see below for details about this problem.  (Note the customer service agent was unable to comprehend how to communicate this issue to Apple, despite repeated attempts.)
1) I tried to create an  apple ID on my iPhone 6. they have their own email accounts. However I could not use these emails, I had to use icloud emails.
2) I went to a computer - an Apple - and created their apple ID online. success - an email was sent to their email addresses, which was verified.
3) I tried to add their new apple ID to their Ipods, and Game Center. This seemed to work fine.
4) I tried to add their new apple ID to iTunes store - no success. the birth year was blank.
5) I logged into "manage my apple ID" on the computer - could not modify the birth year.  Both kids are under 13.
When I contacted apple Support, they told me "well I can't change it, you will just have to create a new Apple ID for them."
So I went through all the steps, and created new icloud Apple ID on the phone. This was successful. However, I discovered that I could not add their own emails to these accounts - they are associated with another Apple ID. (Note this other ID is essentially unusable!)
Further I learned that if I delete these other accounts, they will be permanently unusable by Apple.
The solution to this problem seems to be that Apple should allow a new minor's account to be created with any available email, not just a new icloud email. Or they need to find a way to modify the existing account.

I'm afraid that aliases remain tied forever to the account which created them - you can't move them to another account nor turn them into an actual account.

  • I set up Family sharing but the invite email never arrives at one of the accounts. Any suggestions? Yes, the account is receiving other emails.

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup Family sharing but the invite email doesn't arrive at the destination account.
The account receives other emails and i've checked the Spam filter and virus checker.
The source/host computer is an iMac running Yosemite. I can happily email from the iMac to the MacbookAir.
    Any suggestions or workarounds?

    Hi there _Man,
I understand that you are having an issue with some of your Family Sharing members not receiving the email in order to join your Family Sharing group. You should first try to resend the invitation to this person, using the information in the article below:
See if your family member accepted the invitation
After you send the invitation, you can check its status under the person's name in Settings > iCloud > Family on your iOS device. On your Mac, go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click iCloud, and select Manage Family. Then select that person's name to see the status of the invitation.
If you need to resend the invitation, select "Resend Invitation."
    Join a family group
You can accept or decline an invitation to join a family from you iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
In iOS 8, go to Settings > iCloud > Invitations.
In OS X Yosemite, choose Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Manage Family.
If the invitation is sent to your email address, you can also respond right from your email.
To accept an invitation, follow the onscreen instructions. Here's what you'll be asked to do when you join:
Confirm your Apple ID and password.
Choose if you want to share your content and which iTunes Store account you want to share from.
Choose if you want to share your location. If you agree, your location can be displayed on family members’ devices in Find My Friends and Messages, and the location of your shared devices will also appear on family members’ devices in Find My iPhone.
If you can't accept the invitation, see if someone else joined a family with your Apple ID or is sharing purchased content from your Apple ID. Remember, you can only join one family at a time, and you can only switch to a different family group once per year.

  • How do I set up Family Sharing for my kids without owning a device myself?

My kids received iPads for Christmas. I neither have an iPad nor an iPhone, but I would like to set up Family Sharing.  How can I do this from my account without owning one of said devices?  I have installed iCloud for Windows, but I cannot log into it (valid iTunes account, but not set up for iCloud).
I cannot be the only parent in the world whose kids have iPads, but I don't.
    Many thanks

    Hey Wendaroski,
I am not quite sure what you mean by "my family members emails are already associated with my iTunes account" but what you need for each family member is an Apple ID. Yours would be the one for your iTunes account.
If the other members of the family already have an Apple ID you can invite them to join the family group. If not they will need to create one, using their email address. This article shows how -

  • Setup Family Sharing with a Kids that has an iCloud account already

I have kids with iCloud accounts (actually accounts back from Mobile Me) and now I want to add them to the iOS 8 family sharing. That works but it lists my kids as Adult but they should not be because they are not 13 years old.
Is there a way to make them being listed as Children?

    Making purchases
After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer. As the family organizer, any receipts generated by the transaction will be sent to you. Learn more about how iTunes Store purchases are billed.

  • Family Sharing accounts for kids

I created Mail aliases for my kids as they were too young to have an Apple ID back in the mac.com/me.com days.  Now with Family Sharing, I can create accounts for them (and they are getting older).  Is there a way to convert those aliases to Family Sharing accounts?  I wasn't able to to do this before with a MobileMe Family Pack, but Family Sharing brings a new set of rules on the accounts restrictions.

I'm afraid that aliases remain tied forever to the account which created them - you can't move them to another account nor turn them into an actual account.

  • Family sharing - Stream movies to idevice instead of downloading?

    HI!
i Just set up Family Sharing.
All good in apps, but have this annoying thing with movies:
in the past, with my kid's ipad, I used to have my own iTunes account on it so, when going to the Video app, all my movies purchases where ready to stream directly to the device.
Now with Family Sharing, on my kid's iPad, no movies are available for streaming. I (he) need(s) to go to purchased items on iTunes app, choose my profile, then select movies and yes, he's able to DOWNLOAD it to tjhe ipad, but not stream it.
The fact is that this is less comfortable than the previous situation, as he's not able to directly stream them, which is a pity...
I do have eitherway an iTunes 'server' with the old Home Sharing setup, and yes, he's able to get them from the 'shared' tab of the Videos app, but he was already able to do so in the past.
Also, home sharing only works at home, as it needs to get the media from the iTunes library which has Home Sharing enabled, so it's useless (as it was) outside home.
Now, the new Family Sharing is intersting, but I'm annoyed I read on Apple's website that, upon getting to any other member's itunes items, the rest would be able to  DOWNLOAD OR PLAY the items.
    (See here;
    Family Sharing
Either taht info was wrong, or there's something wrong in my case, or the feature is not working for some other reason.
    Any ideas?

Couldn't agree more.   I bought my wife a new iPad and the sharing of the Apple ID was something I was looking forward to switching over to family sharing to simplify trying to manage multiple phone #'s and email addresses under one Apple ID by device and to also prepare for the day when my kids are teenagers and want their own accounts to make their own purchases, etc.   Issues like having 5 devices ringing/buzzing away when someone calls me is annoying and could be tackled by adding Apple ID's and switching to family sharing.   However, the inability to stream movies is an immediate deal killer.   My wife wants to watch a movie while working out and certainly isn't going to wait for an hour for it to download first.   Yuck!

  • Family Sharing - can't accept invitation

    Hi,
I'm adding my wife and 2 kids to Family Sharing. The kids worked fine, but no matter how much I try I can't add my wife.
On the iPad i go to iCloud->Family->Add Family Member. I enter my wife's email address (a hotmail account) and an invitation gets sent to her. She accepts the invite, only to be told:
"Invalid Invitation. You are already part of this family. Go back to iCloud and tap on Family to review your family settings."
I go back to iCloud and under my wife's name it simply says "Invitation sent".
I've sent her around 20 invites now and she still hasn't managed to successfully accept any of them, either from the same iPad or her iPhone. I'd be really grateful for any suggestions on how we fix this problem. It seems totally stuck!
    Thanks.

    Hi Help Bilbo,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like there is trouble joining Family Sharing. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support
You can accept or decline an invitation to join a family from your device:
In iOS 8 on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > iCloud > Invitations.
In OS X Yosemite on your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud > Manage Family.
If you can't accept the invitation, see if someone else joined a family with your Apple ID or is sharing purchased content from your Apple ID. Remember, you can only join one family at a time, and you can only switch to a different family group once per year.

    Hello Jeanelleelisem,

  • I have family sharing, however children have received iTunes vouchers for Christmas and redeemed under their own IDs, however purchases still only can go through to my credit card

how do you get family sharing to use kids redeemed iTunes vouchers before collecting from parents credit card

    Hello 69cou,
You would need to add the iTunes Gift Cards on their devices or Apple ID. Once that is done, they should be able to make a purchase and pay with their iTunes credit first and what ever is left over will go towards your payment information. Take a look at the articles below for more information and how to add credit.

  • Family Sharing & iTunes gift cards??

I have two kids under 13 years of age, and I want us all to use the iTunes money we have on my (the "Organizer") account, but Family Sharing charges their purchases on my credit card, NOT my iTunes money. How can I change the primary payment to use iTunes money & not my credit card in Family Sharing? I tried disabling Family Sharing and just go back to what we were doing before (all devices on one apple id), but now I cannot even disable Family Sharing because my kids are under 13.

    Queen Bee,
There is no way to transfer a balance to another account.  However, if the balance is completely untouched, you can ask iTunes Customer Service to "un-redeem" the  card:

  • Family Sharing and the App Store

There are two weird things I'm noticing now that I've set up Family Sharing for my wife and myself.
    1) Both of our iCloud Account pictures in the Settings App are the same. If I change my iCloud picture to myself, both our iCloud accounts (though they are set up with separate email addresses) change to the same picture. The same happens if my wife sets her iCloud account picture - it changes both our accounts' pictures.
    2) When I go to the App Store, under Purchased I get two sections: My Purchases, and my wife's purchases, listed under her name. If my wife goes to the App Store and goes to Purchased, she gets the message "This iTunes account is set up to use Family Sharing with a different iCloud account than [my email address]." This is despite logging completely out of iCloud and the App Store on her phone, leaving Family Sharing, and rejoining everything using her Apple ID.
Has anyone else noticed strange or similar behavior?

I have fixed the first issue. Both our phones use my iCloud account for contacts (primary iCloud account on my phone, secondary iCloud account on my wife's phone), but apparently that now messes with how the phone identifies who you are. I have since enabled my wife's iCloud contacts and added one card for herself, using Settings > General > Siri to set that new card as her contact card. Now our iCloud accounts both show our respective pictures, but we can still share contacts.
However, even after turning off Family Sharing on my wife's iCloud account and re-adding her to my Family Sharing account, we still get the message on her phone in App Store > Purchases that "This iTunes account is set up to use Family Sharing with a different iCloud account than b***". There is a Learn More button, but this simply takes me to her phone's iCloud account where it clearly shows that her iCloud is set up in family sharing with my b*** email address. Under App Store > Purchases on my phone, I am able to view both my purchases and, supposedly, her purchases (currently empty).
No one else has seen this problem?

  • Family sharing - is it possible to get the download requests from my kids via email?

    Hi
I've set up the family sharing and it works really well. My kids have to get my permission to download anything.
The problem I have is that I don't always have access to my personal apple device, which is my iPad, but always have access to my work one, which is my iPhone.
As I can't put my personal apple id on my iPhone I was wondering if it was possible to set the requests to come via email?
    Thanks in advance
    Tim

At this point, this only works through Notifications on the Mac and iPad:
Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy - Apple Support
Maybe using the Notification Center on your Mac is a good alternative for using e-mail.
