Family sharing - Stream movies to idevice instead of downloading?

HI!
i Just set up Family Sharing.
All good in apps, but have this annoying thing with movies:
in the past, with my kid's ipad, I used to have my own iTunes account on it so, when going to the Video app, all my movies purchases where ready to stream directly to the device.
Now with Family Sharing, on my kid's iPad, no movies are available for streaming. I (he) need(s) to go to purchased items on iTunes app, choose my profile, then select movies and yes, he's able to DOWNLOAD it to tjhe ipad, but not stream it.
The fact is that this is less comfortable than the previous situation, as he's not able to directly stream them, which is a pity...
I do have eitherway an iTunes 'server' with the old Home Sharing setup, and yes, he's able to get them from the 'shared' tab of the Videos app, but he was already able to do so in the past.
Also, home sharing only works at home, as it needs to get the media from the iTunes library which has Home Sharing enabled, so it's useless (as it was) outside home.
Now, the new Family Sharing is intersting, but I'm annoyed I read on Apple's website that, upon getting to any other member's itunes items, the rest would be able to  DOWNLOAD OR PLAY the items.
(See here;
Family Sharing
Either taht info was wrong, or there's something wrong in my case, or the feature is not working for some other reason.
Any ideas?

Couldn't agree more.   I bought my wife a new iPad and the sharing of the Apple ID was something I was looking forward to switching over to family sharing to simplify trying to manage multiple phone #'s and email addresses under one Apple ID by device and to also prepare for the day when my kids are teenagers and want their own accounts to make their own purchases, etc.   Issues like having 5 devices ringing/buzzing away when someone calls me is annoying and could be tackled by adding Apple ID's and switching to family sharing.   However, the inability to stream movies is an immediate deal killer.   My wife wants to watch a movie while working out and certainly isn't going to wait for an hour for it to download first.   Yuck!

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from her old compouter to /Music/ in her account on this new computer.

  • Can you set up family sharing from a mac air instead of an iphone

I am interested in sharing an ibook with my wife who has an iphone. I have a Mac Air but don't have an iphone. Is it possible to set up family sharing from my Mac Air with my Apple ID as the primary?

Yes, it is, assuming your Mac is running Yosemite: Start or join a family group using Family Sharing - Apple Support

  • Family sharing - is it possible to get the download requests from my kids via email?

    Hi
I've set up the family sharing and it works really well. My kids have to get my permission to download anything.
The problem I have is that I don't always have access to my personal apple device, which is my iPad, but always have access to my work one, which is my iPhone.
As I can't put my personal apple id on my iPhone I was wondering if it was possible to set the requests to come via email?
    Thanks in advance
    Tim

At this point, this only works through Notifications on the Mac and iPad:
Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy - Apple Support
Maybe using the Notification Center on your Mac is a good alternative for using e-mail.

  • "Cannot open" error when trying to stream movie to iDevices

I'm having trouble with two videos I recently purchased in iTunes.  The movies play on my computer, but I cannot play them on any devices when I stream them over "Home Sharing".  I get an error "Cannot Open".  This happens on all my iPads and iPhones.  Other movies play fine.  What could the problem be?

I fixed mine by unplugging apple tv for about five minutes, then plugging it back in.

  • Purchased movies say "watch" instead of "download."

Recently, after deleting a movie from my iPad Air, I would try to download the same movie, but the only option is the "watch" option. I have the settings to show only downloaded movies, not all movies. I can download the movie if I change the setting to show all movies. My problem is, I would like to download the SD version of the movie instead of the HD version. I've tried to search in iTunes, choose the movie and select the SD version, but it only shows WATCH. Why does my iPad think the movies are still on my device?

    Hello there, aandrewjulie.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up how to choose SD content for sync and download to your iOS device:
iTunes Store: Viewing and downloading HD content on iPad
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4095
If you prefer to sync SD video content to iPad:
With iPad connected to your computer, select it on the left side of the iTunes window.
    Click the Summary Tab.
Scroll down to the Options section and select the checkbox for "Prefer standard definition videos."
Now when you sync videos to iPad, only SD versions will be synced.
To undo your change, simply repeat the above steps and uncheck the box next to "Prefer standard definition videos."
If you don't sync using your computer then the following article provides the optiosn for doing this directly from your iPad:
iTunes: Sync purchased HD videos to iPod or iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4223
Download previously purchased content in a lower resolution
The easiest way to put purchased videos onto your device is to download the videos from iTunes in the Cloud. This should make sure that you get the highest resolution video optimized for your specific device. Learn more about downloading from iTunes in the Cloud.
Syncing video to iPhone 3G or earlier, iPod touch (1st or 2nd generation), iPod classic, iPod 5th generation, or iPod nano (3rd, 4th, or 5th generation)
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. You can download the latest version for free here.
    Open iTunes on your computer.
From the Store menu, choose Store > Sign In, and then enter your Apple ID and password.
Navigate to your Purchased page. Find it by clicking Movies or TV Shows from the top navigation bar in the iTunes Store, and then click Purchased from "QUICK LINKS" in the iTunes Store.
Choose the appropriate video type: Movies or TV Shows.
In the lower-right corner of the screen, deselect the box next to "Download HD When Available."
Search for the desired video and click the download button.
This should download the standard definition version to your computer so you can sync to your device.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Family Sharing *never* asks permission prior to purchase

I'm sure others are having this issue (I've seen a few posts here and there); I have a love/hate relationship with Family Sharing. Movie and TV sharing is great -- it's easy for us to share purchases; we do it all the time.
The problem is with the fabled "ask permission prior to purchase" feature -- it doesn't work. Not for us anyway. I only know that a purchase has been made after I get notification email from my CC company that a charge has been made.
My kids are good; it's not a problem. They usually ask.
Everyone at Apple is perplexed -- no idea why it's not working, have you tried this or that kind of thing (logging in, then out; deleting plan then reinstating, etc.; nothing has fixed it).
It's such a great idea, I'm really kind of ****** that it isn't working for us.

    Hello jeffchr,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like you don't want to be billed for a family members purchases. I would recommend that you read these articles, they explain the features options.
    Family Sharing
All new iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases initiated by family members will be billed to the family organizer’s account.
    Family purchases and payments
    Making purchases
After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer's card.
How iTunes Store purchases are billed
Which payment methods will be used first?
When you make a purchase, content credits are used first, followed by Gift Certificate, iTunes Card, or Allowance Account credits. Your credit card or PayPal account is then charged for any remaining balance.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Mario

  • New phone, family sharing music all gone

    Hello all,
I just replaced my wife's phone.  We are both on iOS8.  I set up family sharing and I am the organizer.  When I set up her ID on her last phone we went into purchased music, movies, etc. and downloaded them to her phone.  When I replaced her phone today and restored from a iCloud backup, no music or movies are there.  With family sharing will my wife how to re-download music and movies every time she upgrades phones?  Do we have to go back through the long process of weeding though all my purchased albums etc.  I would've thought that once she downloaded everything she wanted once, iCloud would keep it all intact.
    Any info is appreciated!
    Bob

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If other music is not on your computer or iPod it is gone.

  • Family Sharing and free apps - add to my own purchase history?

Hi, my wife has a collection of free iPhone apps on her Apple ID's purchase history.
We have set up Family Sharing, and all is working well - we can share and install each other's apps.
However, is there a way to add free apps she has previously downloaded on her own account to my own purchase history too? For example, she has Apple's 'Remote' app on her account, and it would be nice to know it was also attached to my own purchase history - however, when I download it, I get the message telling me it is linked to her account under family sharing.
Is there any way to download it to my own account so it shows in both of our purchase histories?
    Thanks,

  • A recent movie purchased on iTunes and downloaded to my computer does not show up on apple tv.

I routinely buy movies on iTunes and they usually show up on apple tv automatically but the most recent purchase is not there. Im not sure why.

    Hi there mctedesco,
You may want to make sure that the movie in question was purchesedwith the same Apple ID that is being used on the Apple TV. Take a look at the article below for more information.
    Download past purchases
    Before you begin
Sign in with the Apple ID that you used for the original purchase. Use these steps to see which Apple ID you used to download an item.
See if the content is available for redownload. Previously purchased items might not be available if they're no longer on the iTunes Store. If you changed your Apple ID from one country to another, you can’t download items you purchased in a previous country.
If you're using Family Sharing, you can use these steps to download your family member's content.

  • Will I loose apps and settings if I move to Family Sharing instead of using one Apple ID?

I am looking at setting up Family Sharing.  I currently have all of the families devices under my apple ID.  If I create new accounts for each member of the family, will they loose all the apps and data on their devices?

Thanks mende1.  Would you back up all the devices on itunes first, and then create the family sharing?  I have all my kids devices tied to my account and I don't want them to loose all their stuff.
    Thanks

  • How does my family stream (not download) content using family sharing

    Hi,
Our family previously used Home Sharing with an iTunes account on an iMac. We could pick up our family iPad and stream a movie from the iTunes shared library. How do I now do this with Family Sharing in ios8? - I can still stream like before as my apple id previously purchased all content, but not my other family members now. I don't want my 7 year old to have to wait hours while the movie they wanted to watch on the iPad downloads on to the device - I just want it to start streaming like it used to .... any help appreciated!
    Thanks

As far as I know, family sharing should not affect home sharing and as long as Apple id is the same on ipad
in settings - videos (for movies) settings music( for music)
and on computer under home sharing - it should still work the same way.
Apologize in advance if I am wrong, I do not use family sharing and reason for that I feel it is a step back, not forward.

  • How can I move my wife's account under my apple ID to a new Apple ID for her and switch to family sharing?

I have 4 devices under my apple ID. 1 iPAD is used by my wife and has her own mail account setup. With family sharing, I would like to move that account to an Apple ID of her own and add her to the family list. How do I do that?

    Hello Godde
Lets start with checking out the articles below for setting up Family Sharing and more information about Apple ID’s. I will say that you will not be able to transfer any purchases to a different Apple ID, but you can rename the Apple ID. If you want to use Family Sharing, then you will need to just create a new iCloud account and then follow the steps in the second article to start sharing content between you to.

  • My daughter purchased a movie that I approved (Family Sharing) however, it is not showing up in my iTunes account so that we all may watch it on TV?

My daughter purchased a movie that I approved (Family Sharing), however, it is not showing up in my iTunes account so that we all may watch it on TV?

As you connect your ipod to iTunes, an option in the upper right of the screen will appear. When you click this, it will show the different menu for your ipod.
