Family Sharing - Unable to turn on Ask to Buy

I have been attempting to setup my daughters iPhone 5 to use Family Sharing.  I have the invite sent and accepted on her phone.  However, When i try to activate the "ask to buy" function from my phone on her account I get the following message
Has anyone else had this issue? if so, could you give me your ideas on how to work around this?  I feel like it could be something with the setup on my daughters phone, but completely sure.  I have her iCloud setup using her Apple ID, and the iTunes Store is setup using my Apple ID ( have also tried setting it up with her ID being associated with iTunes Store also but no good)

Hi gt23,
It seems you would like to activate "Ask to Buy" on an adult account in your Family Sharing group. "Ask to Buy" cannot be activated on an adult account. The following article provides more details about Family Sharing:
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
Ask to Buy is enabled by default for any children under 13 years old, and can be enabled during the setup process for any children 13-17 years old.* You can't turn on Ask to Buy for adults.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

  • Why is Family Sharing not allowing me to ask for purchases from my mom?

We recently got family sharing together and once my mom tried to click the thingy that says, "Turn on ASK TO BUY" or whatever, this happened:
"Cannot Enable Ask to Buy, Ainslie is sharing purchases from an account that's also used by another family member. Ask to Buy can only be enabled on accounts that aren't shared."
except my iPad mini uses the same Apple ID.....   How do I get it to work?!

See the following for how Family Sharing works
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
    It includes
After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your (the administrator's) account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer's card. As the family organizer, any receipts generated by the transaction will be sent to you. Learn more about how iTunes Store purchases are billed

  • I want to turn on "ask to buy" as the organizer and card holder on "family share"

I want to turn on "ask to buy" as the organizer and card holder on "family share" Who is the genius that made it only possible for under 18 users? Ask them if there motive is greed or are they just ignorant? It's my credit card, give me control! Please fix this ASAP and let me know how to turn it on. Thanks

    Hey maolom,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you may benefit from transferring your library from the PC, to the Mac (to avoid having to turn on the PC and use Home Sharing).

  • Is there a way to turn on Ask to Buy for those older than 18?

Is there a way to turn on Ask to Buy when sharing with an individual older than 18?

    Hey photogpreacha,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to turn on Ask to Buy for a member over 18 years old. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • More Family Sharing Options

I have family sharing set up for my family. Ideally, what we want is to have us all share purchases with each other in the way that family sharing does, however not have ask to buy enabled. The children in the family are given credit in the form of iTunes and App Store gift cards, and we want them to be able to use this, but not have purchases come out of the credit card. Essentially, we want to have individual accounts with credit from gift cards, not have to ask to buy, but also not pull out of a credit card. We want Family Sharing only to share purchases, not to add a credit card or to restrict purchases. Is this possible?

It is not possible in the current iteration of family sharing.  If the children have credit, their purchases will come from the iTunes store credit first.  If there is not sufficient credit, then the Organizer's card will be charged.  That is how family sharing currently works.

I recently set up Family Sharing and do not get ask to buy notifications from my granddaughter. Any help is greatly appreciated. For background using iOS 8.2. A iPad air 2 and iPad mini. I logged out of accounts on both iPads and back in to no avail. I've also powered down and back up, turned ask to buy off then back on,

    Having a similar issue.
My daughter buys an app, gets the prompt to ask permission (which she does) and then nothing happens.
I am the "organizer" so there is no option on my iPhone to be a parent although I read the "organizer" is automatically defined as a parent so theoretically I should receive a notification to approve the purchase. I never get anything.
Someone said to turn on Notifications for "Family" but I don't see any Family listed under the Notifications setup screen.
Not sure why Apple makes this so difficult on top of being so buggy.
Anyone else have this issue with a workaround?

  • Family Sharing problem: Ask Permission Notifications

Ask Permission Notifications are only showing up when I log onto my Macbook and not my iPhone. Is there something in my iPhone settings that is I have activated preventing me from getting these notifications?

Did you create her as a child account, or is she set up as an adult ?
From Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy :
Ask to Buy is a feature of Family Sharing, and the family organizer can turn on Ask to Buy for any family member who isn't an adult. When a family member initiates a new purchase or free download, a request is sent to the organizer if Ask to Buy is on.
There are instructions on that link for how to turn 'ask to buy' on and off for under 18s

  • HT201079 Family sharing : Why not ask to buy for adults ?

I don't see why we can't turn on "ask to buy" for adults. I want to control what I share....

As far as I know Apple haven't said why (these are user-to-user forums), only that you can't - you can try leaving feedback for Apple and maybe in the future it will be possible : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

  • Family Sharing Purchases No Prompt for Parents to Approve

My daugter is purchasing a free game on the app store on her iPad and it’s not prompting me to approve it and thus she’s unable to purchase anything.  I’ve hard rebooted both devices and my wife isn’t getting the prompt either.  iCloud and iTunes appears to be in order.  I’ve logged my daughter out of iTunes and back in with no change.

    Hello there, Lea.
When you've setup Family Sharing and want purchases approved with Ask to Buy, the following Knowledge Base article provides some great information on how to turn that feature on:
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
Approving purchases with Ask to Buy
You can turn on Ask to Buy to require approval for purchases initiated by any family member who is under 18 years old.*
    iOS 8
Tap Settings > iCloud > Family, and tap your family member's name.
    Turn on Ask to Buy.
    OS X Yosemite
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Click Manage Family and select your family member's name.
    Select Ask to Buy.
Ask to Buy is enabled by default for any children under 13 years old, and can be enabled during the setup process for any children 13-17 years old.* You can't turn on Ask to Buy for adults.
If you don't wish to be billed for purchases initiated by a specific adult family member, you can remove that family member from the family group.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Family Sharing : Controlling Purchases

I have set up Family Sharing for all members of my family.
However, everyone is 18 or older and the Ask To Buy option is not available over 18 from what I have gathered in the Apple info on the subject.
I was surprised to receive a receipt today from iTunes Store for a purchase performed by my son without my consent and it was charged on my VISA.
I don't even think he also realized that his purchase was going to be billed on my VISA.
I still want be aware and have request permission sent to me if purchases from my children will be paid using my VISA .
    Is this possible?

Well thanks but I had already read that info before my initial post.
    It says :
Ask to Buy is on by default for any children under 13, and you'll be asked if you want to enable Ask to Buy when inviting anyone under 18 to your family group.* If you turn off Ask to Buy for a family member after they turn 18,* you can't turn it on again.
They were already over 18 when I added my family members so I never was given the option to turn on Ask To Buy.
Now as it says : you can't turn it on again.

  • Family Sharing Doesn't Share

Question...I added my son to family sharing and I am unable to access a song that he bought from iTunes, without buying it myself. I've checked and both our family sharing option is turned on. Please help

  • How do I approve an 'ask to buy' on a family share

How do I find my 'notifications' to approve an 'Ask to buy' from my daughter's profile?

    Hello Shaynn,
If you are the organizer of the Family Share you should see the Ask to Buy request in the Notification Center.
Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy - Apple Support
    Make or decline a purchase
If you're the organizer, you can use these steps to make or decline the purchase from your iOS device with iOS 8 or Mac with OS X Yosemite:
Open the notification to see the item that your family member wants to get. (See your notifications on your Mac or iOS device.)
    Approve or decline the purchase.
If you approve, you need to sign in with your Apple ID and password to make the purchase.
After it's purchased, the item is added to the family member’s account and shared with the rest of the family group. If a family member downloads a previous purchase again, downloads a shared purchase, installs an update, or uses a redemption code in the store, the organizer won't get a notification.
If the organizer doesn't make the purchase or decline the request, it will be deleted after 24 hours, and the child will need to make the request again.
So if you are on your iPhone…
You can access Notification Center from any screen, including the Lock screen. Just swipe down from the top of the screen.

  • Family sharing-child can't see my content or purchase my previous apps

I've followed every step in the Apple support article for family sharing set up and logged in and out of the cloud multiple times but we still can't figure this out?  I set my child's new Mini up on family sharing.  She has to ask permission and that is working.  I can also see all of her content on my iPad.  She can't see any of my content.  She wants an app that she previously purchased on my iPad.  We get a message that says the family already owns it, press okay to download.  But, nothing happens? What am I missing?

Nevermind, resetting the mini and logging back in finally worked.  Must have been a glitch.

  • Are audio books able to be downloaded through family sharing?

I set up family sharing and was hopeful the entire family could enjoy audio books together (listening separately). I can find songs, music and Aps from all family members but not audio books. Is there a way to share them across different Apple IDs?

Which purchased content can I share using Family Sharing
If you turned on Share My Purchases, you can share most content that's also available in iTunes in the Cloud. You can share Music, Movies, and TV shows that you downloaded from the iTunes Store. You can also share Books that you downloaded from the iBooks Store. The availability of each content type depends on your country.
There are a few things that you can't share:
Songs added to iTunes Match from outside the iTunes Store
    In-App Purchases
Items that are no longer available on the iTunes Store
    Items that were hidden
    Apps that aren't shareable
If you're on an Apple TV, you can't access shared music."

  • What happen to existing money when activating family sharing

    Hi,
I would consider to use family sharing but all accounts already have money in them. We were used to buying app store cards, and we still have some to use.
So, what will happen to the money we already have in every account ?
Will it be possible to use the remaining unused app store cards while in family sharing ?
Not related to the main subject, are already bought music and apps will be available to family members ?
    Thanks all

This raise one more question, does that means that purchased apps, music, books with itunes cards will be shared and will go thru the approbation process ?
    François,
As the Family Organizer, you can activate the "Ask to Buy" feature for each member who is under 18.
If "Ask to Buy" is enabled, the member can only make a purchase after you give your approval.  Yes, this also applies if the purchases is charged to their own credit balance (or even if it is a free download).
