Fan and Temperature Issues

Hey everyone,
Recently my fan started getting pretty loud. I opened up the back of my 2009 13" Macbook Pro and gave it a through and through with a compressed air canister, I also unmounted the fan and shot some compressed air into it as well. Now I'm kinda worried, because that only kinda dulled out the noise a bit, and the internal temperature of my CPU is getting a little too hot for comfort(100 C and up). The problem isn't so much the temperature, but the fact that in response to these high temperatures my fan is consistently at a MAXIMUM of 1500 RPM according to SMC Fan Control. Even if, using SMC, I set the minimum fan speed to 4000 or 6000 RPM, my fan just stays at consistently low speeds. Would opening up the fan itself and cleaning/lubing solve the problem or should I just replace the fan altogether?
Thanks in advance

Im having a similar problem with my late 2009 Macbook (white). All of a sudden the fan has been acting up, making uneven and inconsistent whirring sounds. At first it didnt happen right away but now it pretty much starts acting up within 10 minutes of turning on. I downloaded smcFanControl and learned that at some points CPU was in the 90C range and the fan would jump between 0rpm to 1500rpm. I turned it off for an hour or so just now and it's been at a solid 42C and 1999rpm for about an hour now... like i said it's REALLY inconsistent.
based on what i read i guess i dont have to worry about the temperatures so much with this model? I havent gotten past 94C just yet.... Is the best thing to do just replace the fan? Im not sure that would even solve the problem and I'd like to be sure before i spend a cool (har) $100 on something that wont work.
Do laptop coolers help at all? Is there one you guys would recommend for this kind of thing? I just dont want this to be the second hard drive to FRY on me because of a lousy fan.
plus i'm a student, this laptop needs to last me at LEAST 2 more years.
thanks, any temporary fixes would be nice too.

  • Fan and Temperature Issues with certain apps

    Hi there
I have what seems to be an issue with the cooling on my 2011 Mac Mini where when running some apps the cooling fams for the CPU seem not to kick in.
To give an example I do a lot of online gaming and when playing LoTRO on my Mini when the CPU temp gets to around 78-80c mark the CPU fan ramps up to keep the CPU cool which I guess is normal however yesterday I was doing some audio recording / editing in Garageband and noticed the CPU temp was at 93c but yet the fans hadn't kicked in.
I did a bit of research and installed SMCFanControl to monitor what the CPU fan was doing. Again using LoTRO when the CPU got to around 80c the fans ramped up to around 4800rpm and the temperature lowered yet with Garageband even with the CPU at 91c the fan was only spinning at 1800rpm. I know 90c is still below the threshold of safe operation for the Core i5 2415M CPU (which is 100c) but not by much. This is a real concern for me the hotter the CPU runs the shorter its life will be. It is unfortunate that SMCFanControl is unable to directly control the CPU Fan in the 2011 Mac Mini
Can anyone out there can shed any light on why this is happening?

Thank you everybody for your sound advice - Normally John Hammer1 I would agree with you, if OSX can do a task then let it do it and not use 3rd party software, but however in this case I don't think OSX was doing a very good job at cooling the system. To use an analogy you wouldn't drive your car with the temperature gauge constantly near the red line as it would damage your engine. This is how my MM was running when editing (of which I do quite a lot) and having a computer constantly running near its thermal limits isn't doing it any good.
I feel (and have always felt) that my Mac Mini has been lacking in cooling and that whilst the MM is a pretty little computer its performance has always been hampered by its lack of cooling. I'd rather have a bit more noise from the fan and have a more efficient computer.
I have installed Fan Control 1.2 and so far it is doing its stuff ok. Like den.thed I'm a bit old school, I usually keep my Macs for around 4-5 years and I want this one to last.
Again thanks everyone for your advice.

  • IMac 27" (Late 2012) Loud Fan and Overheating Issues, causing Hard Drive Failure

    Hi all,
I'm having some serious overheating issues with my new iMac. Any help to help me solve this problem would be gladly appreciated since it's really beginning to bug me. Here's what's has happened:
I noticed in the first few hours of switching the iMac on that there was a short burst of very loud fan noise. This has been happening about once every two days since and every time I haven't been doing any heavy processing with the system. I've noticed that the main fan will spin, on average, at 1200rpm. Is that normal? The iMac is very well ventilated and sits right next to a window...
I have also boot camped the iMac with a copy of Windows 8 so I could run some fairly power-hungry games. I intentionally purchased a high end iMac (27" display, Intel Core i7 3.4GHz, Nvidia GeForce 680MX Graphics, 1TB Fusion drive) and expected the iMac to run games flawlessly. However, after a few days, I noticed that the CPU and GPU had shot up to a worrying 80°C whenever I ran power-hungry games, with a very loud hissing noise from the fan. After running games for about 10 minutes, the fan will stop hissing, causing the GPU and CPU to increase to 100°C. The iMac then fails and switches off unexpectedly without any warning. After analysing the Windows event logs, I received an event ID 41: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
As this occurred about six times whilst I was testing my iMac's performance, I think my hard drive has now begun to fail - sometimes I will hear the hard drive make a click noise, about once every 5 seconds. Sometimes, the clicking noise causes OS X and Windows to run very slowly (even though minimal RAM is being used and nothing too intensive (Safari, Mail etc.) is being processed). Running Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions under OS X's recovery mode as well as a repair in chkdsk in Windows suggests that there were no problems with the hard drive. All I can do is wait a while for the clicking noise to stop, and then performance will increase. I have backed up everything externally.
I have also performed a reset of the SMC as well as the PRAM, which hasn't really helped.
Any help will be appreciated. I will gladly provide any extra logs etc. if they're needed.
    Thanks so much,
    Alex.

That's the default fan speed on iMacs, so there isn't any problem with this.

You must know that Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8 and that Apple hasn't released drivers for Windows 8, so it can fail. Install Windows 7 inmediately until Apple launches updated drivers.
As it looks like the hard disk is damaged, I would take the Mac to an Apple Store. It's in warranty, so it should be repaired for free or you should receive a new one

  • Loud fan and overheating issue.

I bought a secondhand macbook about 8 months ago, and recently the fan has started making a god awful noise, and it stops and starts every now and then,  and my laptop is heating up. Is this a hardware problem? and will it be expensive to fix?

    1) Thermal sensor issue
    2) Fan issue
Try an SMC reset. See if this helps.

  • Fans and Temperatures

I've not long bought an "old" MBA --- 80 GByte disk and micro dvi.
Recently I've been noticing that, even when the thing is basically
idle (just me tapping away in an editor), the processor gets pretty hot
(getting towards 70 C) and (if it's connected to the power)
the fan starts whirring like mad (6200 RPM).
OK, I know the old MBAs struggle with video and the like. But
this is with just me typing and maybe a couple of (animation free)
web pages. That shouldn't need the fan going at full speed.
((Especially when, if I unplug it from the power, the fans slows but
the CPU gets hardly any hotter!))
Now, I've just noticed that although iStat is telling me
that the CPU is currently 68 degrees, the heatsink is only 56.
Is that right? Should the heat sink be that much cooler than the
CPU? Or is there a problem?
Could someone tell me what sort of temperature difference THEY get
    between CPU and heatsink?
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert.

    Greetings,
What web page causing your air running hot? It might be the network problem. When i'm listening online radio when the network speed is sluggish (especially in my school), my air turn out to be running hot.
How about turning airport off? Running hot as well?
In fact it is very hard to judge what causing your air running hot. Sometime it might be "windowserver", "VshieldCore" or some funny program like that.
Go to activity monitor (all processes) and check out which program causing your cpu running high.
    Good luck.

  • Sound of the fan and temperatures.

I have the new macbook since a month now. I have installed iStat and I see that the cpu is something like 50oC while just surfing or listening to music and the exhaust fan works at 2001 rpm. Is it normal? How about yours?
At 2001 rpm the fan's noise is quite noticable.

I believe it is normal. 50 degrees Celsius is quite cool for a laptop. and your fan RPM is about where mine is and I do not hear it at all. I would have it looked at if it is really that noticeable.

  • Fan and Screen Issues, MBP SR 17" Hi Res

Earlier my fans ran up to 5400 rpm and stayed there (while watching a movie in quicktime, cpu loads was very light), even after getting CPU Temp down to 50 degrees. I restarted the machine and they remained there, after putting it to sleep the went back down to 2000 RPM.
Now they have risen into the 3500rpm range and have the CPU Temp to 48 degrees but are still running at this speed, very very slowly moving down. I have not been doing anything but running firefox- CPU load is negligable. This fan behavior seems out of the ordinary to me.
Also, my screen has a lighter band across the bottom, I would like to know if this is normal, see pics below. Thanks.

The lighter band on the bottom portion of the screen along with the screen being unevenly lit is considered normal by the folks at the Apple Store. I have been through a bunch of 17" Hi Res screens and also bought it to the notice of all the on duty store managers. They acknowledge it but do not have an answer or a solution for me. It's not their fault because all the units that I have come across (which is quite a few) seem to display these artifacts.A few of the non Hi Res screens also displayed the same symptoms. I have given up bringing it to their attention. The Hi Res screen that I have which I got earlier this evening has dark spot(like there is no light) in the bottom left and right corner of the screen. I think it is just the nature of the beast.
    Hope this helps.

  • Satellite L670-1JN - Fan activity and temperature

    Hello,
When my Satellite L670-1JN is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) with an ambiant temp 20C at wich temperaure approximately must be the processor?
At which temperature fan start and stop?
Power mode selected is normal with optimization of performance, with the power adapter.
    Thanks

Yes fan activity is control automatically but when my laptop is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) fan stop(30s) cpu temp increase from 36% to 40% and fan run(30s at 55%) temp decrease from 40% to 36%.
For this I used Health Monitor delivered with PC. Temps ig given in % so i can't know temperature in C.
Is it normal? ambiant temp is 20C.
    It's noisy.
I will prefer to have fan continuously on at lower speed.
Is it possible to change setting of fan and temperature except by changing the cooling method in Windows Power Management to battery optimized.
In this case noise increase fan stop(60s) cpu temp increase from 32% to 40% and fan run(60s at 90%) temp decrease from 40% to 32%.
My PC is newer I have not yet install other application so only OS is running.

  • Msi FX5600 VTDR128 + 3D!Turbo Experience Temperature issue

I bought a MSI FX5600 VTDR128 board, to use on a Abit VP6 board  - 2x PIII 933@133 FSB, 512 MB SDRAM 133 CL3, PSU AOPEN 300 W - installed MSI/Nvidia drivers 44.03 and 3D!Turbo Experience, first the one that came with the drivers and utilities CD, this one reporting erroneous memory and GPU speed (100 MHz and 54 MHz respectively). After that, downloaded and installed latest version of 3D!Turbo Experience, claiming support for FX boards. This  new software reported correctly the core and memory speeds on 2D mode 270/550 MHz, but on 3D mode 270/550 MHz keeps reporting 270/550 MHZ. The temperature and fan values only appeared the first time I ran the program, never showing up in the subsequent runs. The values for Fan/Temp were: 48 ºC/2700 RPM (ambient temp +/- 27 ºC) after playing GTA Vice City for 30 min, with the game still running.  After playing GTA Vice City for 1 hour, one sistem notification box (not from the HTML/Flash frontend) appeared notifying for unusual temperature - 255 ºC   8o . On the previous version of 3D!Turbo Experience a similar box showed up with 127 ºC. In either situations the HTML frontend kept reporting absolutely normal values (48 ºC/2700 RPM). The board is warm to touch (+/- 40 ºC), both the heatsink and the PCB. I find this very strange and i'm not sure if the notification box temp. value is correct - are 127 º C the upper limit of the temp. range (127=(2^7)-1)  on the previous software version and 255 (255=(2^8)-1) on the latest software version ?
The board does not crash when the box appears and keeps running steady as a rock, altough after that i closed the game for protection.
Anyway, I am terribly scared, considering those temperature values may represent a terrible overheating situation. Please HELP!!! . Thanks for your consideration.

If You Think iOS 7 Feels Slow Here’s How to Speed It Up
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Controlling CPU cooling fan and other cooling fans

I have not saw any answers to controlling cooling fans speed especially the CPU fan.
My new mid tower, HP ENVY 700 200z
AMD A10-5800K APU with Radeon HD Graphics
    Motherboard: MSI 2AE0 1.0 w/UEFI: AMI 80.48 01/15/2014 8 gb RAM / Windows 8.1 (x64) (build 9600) / 1 TB Hard drive
I've looked in the UFEI/BIOS settings and can find no way to speed CPU fan up, the fan usually runs around 950 RPM and temperature avg is 50C the coolest I've saw is 47C/ fan 875rpm and sometimes peaks at 78C fan will ramp up to 1150 rpm. Motherboard, HD, video card all never hit 40c.
I consider this to warm would like to keep it at 30c-40c range. I still have my 1st mid tower Gateway and it still runs 15 years old, along with my ASUS mid tower 8 years and I was always able to control fan speeds and keep everything in the 30c-40c range, don't think the new ENVY CPU or motherboard CPU socket will take these very warm temps very well.
Anyone have any idea, or know a way to speed this CPU fan up? I have NO PROBLEM with fan noise and I am even considering buying another CPU fan that I can control the speed of, I'm not using this ENVY other than a business computer, no games period nor trying to overclock.
This is the 1st tower or laptop I've owned that has no user control over so much of its functions nor did not come with a User's Manual. It was like buying a brand new car and knowing what any switch, button or any indicator lamp was for. Did not have any trouble with W. 8.1 already had a Windows Phone and 2 laptops with W 8.1

    Hello TDS777,
I understand you are looking to adjust the fan speed on your HP ENVY 700-200z CTO Desktop PC. Unfortunately, there is no way of doing what you are trying to do on your computer. I would suggest you do a Google search for "computer cooling systems" and you will find various ways of implementing a solution that suits you.

  • System fan error on g62-352ca on startup. are there two fans ie a cpu fan and a system fan?

I get a system fan error on power up?     Are there two fans in the G52-352CA?   Ie a general system fan and a CPU cooling fan or just the one CPU/heatsink fan?
If it is the CPU/heatsink fan then there are 4 part numbers for different options.   Is there some way to tell from the model number or features as to which is needed.    I would prefer to have the part in hand before opening everything up.    Are there better fans to buy and if so how do I find them?       This unit was always running a little on the warm/hot side,

  • KT6 Delta - Random freezes and LAN Issues

Just built a new PC, installed Win XP, installed all the drivers etc.
I get random freezes - as in the machine will just stop responding totally.  I could run for an hour before a freeze, other times its frozen before I've even logged in.
Also the LAN keeps dropping out too.  The timing of this is also random, just to make things interesting.  I could be downloading a 20MB file, get only 2MB into it, then it just sits there.  The only way to get the LAN back up and running is to reboot.  Once I've rebooted, its a case of just waiting for it to fail again
    The specs are as follows:
    KT6 Delta-FIS2R (Gigabit LAN etc.)
    AMD 2800XP+
    1GB Crucial (2 x 512)
    ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
    80 Maxtor HD
    400W PSU
I've got the FSB set to 166 and also set the memory up correctly (333 and 2.5 cl) but to no avail.
I was running with a Soundblaster Audigy card, but took that out and still got the same.  I even tried taking out one of the memory modules.
I don't think its a temperature issue as the CPU is currently running at about 47 Degrees and I've got the side off-of the case.
Please - anyone got any ideas???

I have a KT6 Delta LSR and am having probs with the onboard Broadcom 4401 as well.
After Initial boot of machine I have 2-5 minutes to surf the net or whatever. At that time I lose connection. Also if I linger on one page long enough to read, I lose connection. Or shutdown a net connected program, it loses connection.
When I play Tribes - the connection stays till I leave the server - then I have to reboot.
This is driving me nuts. I have disabled the Lan in bios and installed a Netgear 10/100. XP recognizes it but cannot get rid of "Cable not plugged in" message. So I reinstalled the 4401.
I have RR and am behind a Phoebe 4 port router. None of the other computers have a problem with the router, and I have tried changing plug in ports around among the computers.
I have the same version of driver for it as the latest at MSI. Flashed the latest bios lately as well, in desperation.
Any ideas? I sure would appreciate it.

  • Q10 - OS10 basic and daily issues

This is not an Q10 review, I just want to show several basic issues on Q10/OS10 phone/software. First of all, Q10 is excellent build - feel very good in hand and seems to last long time. I'm using an BB bold 9900 too, as second phone.
However and unfortunatelly, there's few issues that I want to show here:
    1. During a call the caller's name is show very small on screen. In fact, is the smalest thing that apear during a call. Is so small that I need to focus to be able to see who's calling. If there's no caller picture it's almost impossible to see the caller's name.
It will be great that if in absence of caller's picture the caller's name is shown bigger.
    2. The "End call" pictogram is splitting quickly their position into "End Cal" and "Recall" when a call is ending. So if I want to stop the call first call ending and make the second call fast, I'm in position to push "Recal"l instead of "stop call".
I think this pictogram's place changing should be not done. Better remains at their's initial places.
    3. The contacts search is not working properly - even is set to search for the first/second name. There are several missing contacts.
    This is very annoying.
    4. The search contact is not changing is colour when is selected. When this contact is the last shown on screen I have no clue if I push it to select - there's no move or colour change on it! So, I have to select an dthen to scroll up if I want to see the associated phone numbers.
It will be great if the search list moves up when I select the last contact shown on screen. And, obviously change it's colour like it's own phone numbers.
    5. The STOP/START PHONE option is missing!!! Cannot stop or start the phone on schedule.
    This mistake is unbelivable!
    6. The long push of the upper button does not contain the profiles - notifications! So, when a quick sound profile is nedeed there's no quick acces to this. I have to start the "Notifications" and there to set in a small window the "vibrations Only", or "Mute" notification profiles. Pushing the lower button on the phone side is not a quick solution.
If this out of reach profile notification will be on hand it will be great.
I am a 7 years BB fan and I used at least 10 BB devices. I hope the above basic issues will be integrated into the next OS 10 software update due to theirs daily usage.
    Thanks.
