Fan comes on really loud really often?

kinda bothersome to have this fan always coming on so loud. temp seems in the range of normal (b/t 40 and 47c hd and between 56 and 63c for "cpu a temperature diode"). comes on at random times. happens sometime when running processor intensive apps. happens other times when running routing tasks in ilife apps.
is there anything wrong with the computer? is there a quick and safe fix for this? i'm running 10.4.9

It’s not uncommon for the fan to cycle during processor intense periods such as running games, video rich content, etc. As a side note, ensure that you’re running the latest battery update as listed below.
If the problem continues during normal operation, then contact AppleCare and have the condition logged on file and/or receive resolution.

  • 2010 Mac Pro began acting crazy: FCPX crashes, and now Fan comes on super loud.

Yesterday I was brining in (importing) 1080p24 HD from my Canon 5DmkII CF card via rocketfish card reader, and everything was going well as per normal, and then very quickly, both my monitors went blue and it almost looked like it was back on-line within less than a second, except FCPX was closed, and then Canon Utility for reading my card opened as though I had just inserted my CF card.
It was really weird and kind of scary - especially the speed of how quickly all this happened.  Some of you guys know me, but in short, I've been editing in FCP since it was introduced, and I will list all the improtant details below - but please check this out:
This evening, I booted up my Mac Pro and it started with a new twist; the fan(s) came on like a turbine - louder than ever before, as though it was hotwired to 240 volts!  Just the noise of the fan freaked me out and I botted down right away.  Does anybody out there know what might be going on?
    MacPro 5,1 (late 2010)
    2.8 GHz Quad Core
    OSX 10.6.8
FCPX 10.0.6 (haven't downloaded the most recent update yet)
Please help if you are familliar with any of the issues listed above!  Thanks, Stephen

so funny how after all these years working on mac's etc., even if we don't know what's up - it just feels better to know someobdy out there (hello.... hello....) hears me - feels my pain.  Yup - first round with my dear first personal Mac Pro was a crazy process of diagnostics and multiple phone calls and the case number and the system scan and upload results - but really nobody knew what was wrong!
I was stunned when they dispatched a guy in a van (complete with ladder) all the way out to Summit County from Denver and he comes upstairs to my "studio" and basically tears my Mac Pro down to the shell, replaces the entire motherboard, reassembles it and gives me a new SN!  Seriously - I was almost in shock...
"Where did that motherboard come from?  Is it new???  Does this guy know what he's doing???  "Can you just lay all these parts on my carpet like that???  I was pretty nervous.
Anyway - yeah, I feel awful that my fan is maxed out again, but yet I'm doing another AE render anyways.  I figure it can't hurt that it's screaming - it's definately not gonna get hot!  BUT  good suggestion to check the sensor readings!  I downloaded smcfancontrol 2.4 and it only had minimums in the custom settings and I didn't see where I could set limits for maximum speeds - really seems like there is no controlling this!

Trying to see why the fans are spinning real loud and fast. I dont have a nearby Apple store to take it to and Bestbuy wants to overcharge you for a bunch of uncertified geek squad employees working on them. Any help? Thanks in advance.

  • Imac G5 will not boot up. there is power but the screen is black. About 30 sec after turning it on, the fan comes on loudly.

I have an old imac G5 (non Intel) The screen went blank but the fan turns very loudly. I cannot reboot the computer.  whenever I start it I get power and black screen and the fan comes on loudly after about 30 secs. I have tried rebooting pressing varius keys, but no luck. I once got the flashing question mark, but I can't get that either. I'd like to reboot from the disc, but I cannot insert a disc. Any help out there??

If zapping the PRAM does not get it working, it's time for a new iMac.  Repairs will not be worth the cost.  Put it towards a new iMac.
I've been there, done that.  Had my burial last summer.

  • TS2634 When ever I plug in my earphones the sound comes out really low

When ever I plug in my earphones the sound comes out really low and you barely can hear it.

The volume is set very quite I guess. Try adjusting the volume with the bottoms on the side. Your earphones could maybe cause some trouble too, are they damaged, are they as quite on another device?
Also note that your iPad remembers the earphones and will always adjust it back to the last setting these earphones had.

  • Fan starts to make loud noise when watching youtube videos

Hello there, I have been having a problem with my Macbook Pro for a while and I hope I can find some help here. My Macbook Pro has the problem that when I am watching youtube videos and I have the fullscreen option on, if the video is lasts, say more then 4 min or so, then after a while the fans start to kick in and they keep getting louder and louder for no reason.
It also does this sometimes when I open the spotlight to search for something, although that hasnt happened as much lately. But this is really getting annoying, I mean, why would a simple video from youtube, make the mac go all crazy as if I was rendering or exporting video, its nuts. I have all the updates installed too.
I also went to an Apple store, and of course when I try to show the person the issue I have, the macbook pro works just fine! Its somewhat random. I told the guy that I have Applecare and if they could just hold onto the machine and test it out themselfs and the guy tells me, that I have to pay THEM for this service if they dont find anything. What the? Is it my fault if the issue doesnt come up during their suposed testing time? What if they just dont do anything to it, and then say they dont find anything, and im suposed to pay for this even though I have Applecare? There must be something wrong.
Anyway, I really appreciate any help and guidance I can get on this issue. Btw, my Macbook Pro is the second generation one, the one with Intel Duo Core 2, 2.33 ghz, 2 GB ram and the ATI video card. I also recently ran Disc Utility from the install disc and I repaired some issues on the HD, but its still the same.
Thank you for reading and (hopefully) responding to this topic.

Thank you for the replies. I have just downloaded the iStat Widget and I noticed that the fans were at about 2800-2900 rpm and the sound wasnt noticable, I then played a youtube video that lasts for 5 min, although already on the 1 min mark the fans were getting louder when running in full-screen mode. I then checked iStat and it peaked at around 5994 rpm. I then stopped the full screen viewing and it went back to 3000 rpm after a while, and now it seems to be locked at 2400 rpm.
What I dont get is, why is it that when I play videos from my hard drive and watch movies, even in full screen mode, it doesnt get near 5990 rpm at any point, at least I dont notice any loud fan sounds. Although that has happened when I watched a HD video from my desktop that lasted about 6 min, but the fans didnt go as loud as right now.
Also, a few days ago, I was playing a small flash game on the net, and I got the same problem with the fans as with the youtube videos. I read that youtube uses flash, is this right? Could there be something on this? I have downloaded the latest flash player version though, so I dont know whats going on.

  • Lockup when fan comes on (HP Pavilion G6)

I've just bought an HP Pavilion G6-2295sa yesterday, and have spent the day installing my usual software on it (Office, Visual Studio, etc.).
This evening the fan has started to come on quite loud (its not rattling or anything, just going fast I think). The laptop doesn't feel particularly warm so I'm not really sure why it keeps coming on.
However the real problem is that whenever the fan comes on, Windows locks up, I can't move the mouse, keyboard doesn't respond, I can't even turn it off by holding in the power button - I had to remove the power and battery.
Is this a common issue? If it does it any more then tomorrow it'll be going back and being replaced, but I'm wondering whether its worth replacing it with the same laptop or not - if its a known/common issue then I'll probably go for something else.
Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Can't use FaceTime because fan noise is so loud

I have my Macbook Pro connected to a Thunderbolt display and when I'm using them, I have the Macbook lid closed and I tuck it under the display. However, for a few weeks now, when I try to use FaceTime, the fan kicks on so loudly that the person I'm talking to can't hear me. This setup used to work just fine, now it doesn't.
It's not just FaceTime that causes the fan to kick in, it's really when I play video of any kind. It requires a lot of processing as we all know, but I'd like to figure out why it used to not be a problem but now it is and I'm just not sure where to start. I have plenty of ventilation around my computer and I've closed all other running apps but it's never made a bit of difference.
I've searched the forums here a lot and found a lot about killing processes and such, but that seems to be addressing siutations in which the fan runs a lot for no apparent reason. For me, it's very clear that it happens when I do anything involving video.
I saw a suggestion to reset the SMC which I could certainly do, but it seems like that shouldn't be the first thing I try.
Can anybody recommend anything else before I try something like that?
    Thanks

That's correct. It is banned by law in KSA, UAE and Qatar.

  • Intermittent Problem - Fans come on full

    Hello Members,
A while ago I posted a kernel panic on this forum, and got some useful informtion.  Thanks.
I have a new system, and what seems to me, a NEW problem.
The fans (somewhere) come one full blast (or something, DVD drives??).  In any case the
system makes a very loud noise, which sounds like fans coming on.
The noise seems to be coming from the top of the system, near where the two DVD drives are.
I checked the system, while it was making this noise.
         1.  I stopped the video card fan momentarily - not the problem.
          2.  Stopped the gray fan at the rear by the cards, not the problem.
          3.  Stopped the gray fan near the front of the system, not the problem.
So it is not these three fans causing the noise. My latest issue with this system:
I put the system to sleep over night.  At 8am, I hear the fans come on full (or whatever the noise is).
The system was still "asleep".  I pressed keys on the keyboard, moved the mouse, etc.  The system
would not wake up.  I depressed the power button part way, no wake up there either.
Finally I pressed and held the power button down until system shutdown.  I restarted the system a few
minutes later.  The restart was OK.
I have (counting the system disk) 4 internal SATA drives
    2 DVD drives
1 Lacie Quadra d2 running on the PCI ex - USB 3.0
2 G-tech drives running on firewire 800 (for general backup, and one for timemachine)
Processor: 2x2.66 6 Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 24GB, 1333 DDR3 ECC
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5870.
This is a REPLACEMENT system from Apple!  They could not fix a previous system (still under warranty), so they did
provide a new system (thank you Apple).  BUT  the older replaced system exhibited similar problems!
Any one have any ideas?  Yes, I plan to take this system to the apple store, but the issue is so intermittent, that it is unlikely that
the system will make the noise in the store (plus I have to remove peripherals, etc)
    Any info will help,
    Thank,
    Eric

    Hello Linc,
Thanks for the confirmation.  I ended up removing the PCI card and uninstalling the driver.
I am now running the drive from the USB 2.0 port on the computer.  Lacie never owned up to
the fact that the PCI express card and USB 3.0 are not "safely" functional on Mac Pro with Lion.
I am testing the system, only time will tell.
    Thanks again,
    Eric

  • Macbook fans come on a lot

Hi everyone. Eversince my macbook came back from the random shutdown problem repair, I think that my fans come on a lot. For example, if I am just watching anything with flash (e.g. youtube, google videos, etc) or watching a DVD, the fans will come on full blast.
Is this normal? Do ya'll also have the fans coming on when doing something slightly intensive?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem. Very very annoying. I'm
running 10.4.8, and since this upgrade, my fan ALWAYS
comes on full blast with any movie, video ichat,
    flash video, etc.
I'm contemplating switching to a MBP because of this
as well as some poor performance with my MB.
That's the way it's supposed to work. Unfortunately, with the graphics circuit used in the MacBook, it puts a load on the processors causing the fan to ramp up when viewing most video.
I play poker with a 3-D software application that causes my fan to run loud when there are a lot of players present, and video action going on. I may upgrade to a pro too when the CoreDuo 2 models come out. About the only thing I don't like about the MacBook is the weaker graphic performance.
