Fan constantly on on brand new G71 laptop

Hi,
Around a week after I bought it, I have noticed that the fan in my Windows 7 G71 laptop is very loud and constantly on, starting the moment the machine is turned on. I have heard that this can be changed in the BIOS by disabling "Fan Always On" but I am not happy to do this as I am worried that the system will overheat.
The fan noise is not due to dust accumulation as the laptop is brand new. Furthermore, the fan is on even when the machine is stone cold with nothing but Windows running.
The problem appears to have only just made itself felt as I am sure I would have noticed it earlier.
I have two questions:
- Is it safe to disable "Fan Always On" in BIOS while running on battery or AC?
- Is there any other way to keep the fan quieter?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Ya check that option in Bios, if that isnt the case you are in the same boat as I am/was I have a desktop with that same problem but my fan is 5000rpm and sounds like an air plane.  I just did a re-install of windows and it seems better for me.  I have no option in BIOS for fan controls.

Hello! Flash keeps crashing on my brand new PC laptop. It has crashed on both Chrome and Firefox. I have updated everything I can think of on this PC, including drivers. I have made sure flash is up to date and the browsers I just recently installed seeing as this is a new PC so they are up to date as well. I disabled hardware acceleration about 5 mins ago, I am desperate at this point. Anyone have any idea what could be causing these crashes? Oh, and I have Windows 7 OS, if that gives any insight to anything. Thanks!

  • Ham radio is shutting down my brand new Z61t Laptop!!!

Hi everyone, I just bought a Z61t 9441 laptop and I am experiencing a problem when I traxmitt my 2 meter ham radio which shuts down the laptop.  I put the powersupplys on different breakers and that didn't solve the problem.  When I key the mike on the transceiver immediately the Z61t shuts down and I have to disconnect the battery and power supply cord to get it to reboot from scratch.  I have not tried any other frequencies other that 2 meter as I don't have my HF attenna up yet, but can anyone tell me if they are having the same problem?  No one on the 2 meter net today could suggest anything but a power supply problem and I have ruled it out.  It has to be an RF problem, why would 2 meter RF shut down the Z61t???????   Any input would be appreciated because I did not have this problem with my Sony Vaio laptop at all?????

Now that is a strange problem... I'll have to check and see if my Yaesu VX-5R does the same with any of my Thinkpads. Although since I don't have a proper license to transmit in the 2 meter band, my tests will be into a dummy load. What kind of power are you running on your rig and how far is your laptop away from your antenna? Certainly a large amount of RF is not something which some electronics can tolerate well. Even my car (a 3-series BMW) has a sticker which says I'm not supposed to operate amateur radio or cell phones (!) inside as it might interfere with the vehicle's own data communication systems.

  • Issue with a brand new HP laptop, windows 8 preinstalled

    Dear all,
I have the following issue. I just unpacked my HP Envy 4 laptop (windows 8 preinstalled). I finnished the first setup of the laptop and I had the windows 8 "metro" screen, after that the laptop restarted and since then I just get a sign that I need to perform recovery. I can enter the system diagnostig and system information, but I can't access the boot device option, BOIS setup and system recovery - if I press F9 F10 or F11 I receive this blue screen.
The error in this blue screen is 0x000225 - a required device isn't connecte or cannot be accessed. I searched the internet for this error, but the only suggestions are for virtual machines to change the lan adpter or to enable the acpi support.
I have installation Windows 8 flash drive (from my other laptop) but I cant boot from it as well. Any idea how can I fix this, or I need to ship pack the laptop to HP?

    Hi TPAKTOUCTA,
Take a look at this document and let me know if it helps.  This recovery document may help as well.

  • My iPod 4th-gen charges just fine in any wall outlet, but when connected to my brand new ASUS Windows-8 laptop's USB 3.0 port the charging process just keeps "blinking" on both the iPod and the laptop and will not connect to Itunes...

Hi, I HATE to ask for help with this, but I HAVE looked everywhere and Google searched different wordings and have not found anything similar nor a solution to my problem!                                                                                                                                                                                                                               My good old iPod 4th-gen charges just fine in any wall outlet, in any house, but when I connect it to my brand new ASUS laptop that has Windows-8 and 3.0 USB ports using the charging/data cable, the charging process just keeps "blinking" BOTH the iPod and the laptop and it will not connect to ITunes and I get "A Device is Detected" message that keeps popping up and going away over and over right above the Windows desktop toolbar.                                                               When I go to control panel and select "Devices" it does show the iPod, but for only a split second and than it disappears, but than it comes back again for a split second and than it disappears again and just keeps doing that over and over and over!                                                                                                                  I have tried resetting the iPod while it is plugged into the laptop by holding the power and menu buttons, that did no good.                                                             I also tried uninstalling iTunes and any other Apple stuff listed and reinstalling it all, that did NOT work!                                                                                          The iPod, the laptop and iTunes ARE all fully updated!                                                                                                                                                                I AM using a brand new charging/data cable that I just opened up an hour ago (I've learned to keep a few brand new ones around at all times since these piece of garbage rip-off cables hardly last a week, even when you baby them!). I also tried a few old cables, they all do the same thing!                                                       I would like to get this piece of junk to connect to my new laptop, even if only once, so that I can change/delete some songs and transfer a few dozen photos, since I haven't been able to do any of that stuff since my old laptop (that NEVER had any problems connecting) died way back in May! lol.                                                                                                                                                                                                 I hope somebody knows a fix or solution! Thank You!

  • Brand new T440p freezing on shutdown - happening on multiple identical laptops

I purchase Lenovo laptops for my employees at work.
Just ordered 2 brand new T440P laptops. Both machines are exhibiting the same behavior.
Turned on first machine, ran windows Update + did firmware update. Machine restarts after firmware update (automatically), but it just hangs at the ThinkPad wallpaper (no icons/desktop/mouse). Since I did a firmware update, left the machine there for 24+ hours before doing a hard shutdown. It continued to sit there over the 24 hours, had to eventually do a hard shutdown. Machine is obviously bricked because the firmware did not update correctly.
Turned on the second machine, booted into Windows for the fist time, started a clean shut down immediately, experiencing the same hang. Hard reset the machine, same thing happens every time.
Is there some issue going on with these machines? Luckily CDW is great about return policies, but this needs to be addressed.

My coworker and I each bought a new T440p, and we are experiencing the exact same problem in both of our machines (freezing on shutdown with the wallpaper showing and nothing else).  I did a clean factory restore on my machine, but the problem still persists.  It probably happens one in every 5 times or so (i.e. very frequently).  The only way to get out of it seems to be by holding down the power button.  Both of our machines are i5 4200M with NVIDIA 730M.  Has anyone tried calling Lenovo about this?

  • Noise in brand new Penryn MB Pro?

    Hello there,
I just replaced my aging PowerBook G4 with a brand-new MacBook Pro 15 inch, 2.6 GHz.
The machine is blazing fast, especially compared to my old laptop. Leopard really sings on this machine, and the display is just gorgeous!
My only question for others who have received these machines and have upgraded from older models is whether you have found, like I do, at least subjectively, that these machines are somewhat noisier than the G4 models they have replaced.
Specifically, hard drive access noise seems a bit more pronounced, that is, you hear more of a hollow, metallic sound coming from the laptop case. this isn't really annoying to me, it's just a bit of a difference from what I'm used to. (My machine has the 250 GB drive in it.)
Second, fan noise, or what I take to be fan noise, seems more pronounced. There is a fairly steady, low pitched hum coming from the right side of the machine, near the right speaker. Sometimes, the pitch of the common will rise, which I'm guessing is the fan speeding up.
I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth taking the machine in to the Apple Store for a once-over by one of their technicians, or is there some other kind of diagnosis I should do at home first to see if these noises are normal?
Other than that, these are gorgeous machines and I am thrilled with mine.

Well, here's the promised update, and it's rather interesting.
I was getting nervous because it appeared that after arriving at the repair depot, my laptop was just sitting there and not getting fixed. After a couple of days of no change in status on the Support website, I called, and an Apple Care representative told me that "the machine is in engineering right now, which doesn't usually happen." But he couldn't tell me what it meant.
The next day, I received an e-mail from someone in Apple Care, letting me know that Apple was going to offer me a choice of resolutions to the situation. According to the e-mail, the engineering department wanted to keep my laptop to be able to further pinpoint the cause of "the failure." If I let them keep my current machine, they would send me a *brand-new replacement laptop* of the same configuration straight from the Apple Store. However, they had no provisions for backing up or transferring whatever data is currently on the machine.
The other option I was given was to allow them to go ahead and repair my current machine. In the end, that's what I decided to do because getting a brand-new machine from the Apple store seems to be another gamble... if that one had a noisy fan, stuck pixels or some other issue, I'd be back to square one.
I promise to report back again when I have my repaired laptop back home... that should be by the early part of next week. I'm sharing this with all of you because it sounds to me as if Apple is becoming aware of some sort of manufacturing flaw in this earliest run of new laptops, causing the noise problems attested to in this thread and others. That's the only way I can explain the engineering department wanting to keep my old unit for further study.
    To be continued...

  • Can't install brand new nano

I'm aware that there are a ton of topics like this already, but I figured I'd post a clean one. I have a brand new HP laptop with Vista and a brand new 4g ipod nano. When I try to install the ipod, I get a screen saying "Insert the disc that came with your ipod." Since that's not possible, the other option is "I don't have the disc." The options are "check for a solution"(which doesn't find anything) and browse my computer. Does anyone know what to do from here? Thank you

Finally! I found the answer after a lot of searching. Here's what to do if you hae the same problem.
"I eventually got around it another way. It seemed that Vista wasn't looking for the drivers in the correct place. I just waited for the wizard to ask for the location of where the files are located, and typed in C:\WINDOWS\System32. Then the computer installed the drivers properly (detected and installed as ipod). Then another found new hardware popped up and i also pointed it to C:\WINDOWS\System32. This installed as generic volume. So all fixed!
Above, I was asked to type C:\WINDOWS\INF - That did not work."
YOu have to do this a bunch of times till all of the drivers are installed.

  • Horizontal ghosting on brand new T450s LG Full HD Screen

    Hi,
Last friday, I've received a brand new T450s laptop, but after using it a bit, I've discovered that the screen has a weird behavior. I'm nearly sure that the problem is hardware related...
    Have you already seen this:
    Link to image
    (more pictures there:
    https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6TDb7DjOC5Xd2JJbDF3OVIzRDg&usp=sharing
Bad lines move when I move the windows so it's not a bad line or something like this. The more contrast there is on the whole line, the more the problem appears (you can see more samples with the picture causing problems in the link above).
Can I ask for a replacement, or reimbursement? I don't like the idea of this laptop, freshly out of the factory will be left in the hand of a brute repairman .
    Any advice will be welcome...
    Regards,
    Robin

    Hi Hemanth,
Thanks for the suggestions... to be honest, I doubted any of your suggestions  would help, but I tried anyway.
Booting in "safe mode" didn't solve the problem
Drivers were already updated (I installed all windows update packages and run all lenovo solution center updates which include a network driver update, but no graphics drivers AFAICT).
I didn't go into the BIOS because these lines appears in rather specific conditions (background has to be dark but not black, there must be a strong contrast -ideally white and black- windows on the left of the screen for the problem to be seen at its maximum).
Furthermore, following the suggestion of a technical support guy, I tried connecting the laptop to a real screen (through VGA because I don't have a display port cable at hand)... there is no problem with the external monitor/vga... this must be a TFT screen or cable defect :-/.
After contacting technical support, I'm about to get reimbursed (DOA procedure was accepted) and now, I wonder...
Is this a common problem? related to the first items of a new batch? I really like this laptop, it's the only computer I find fitting my taste (14" Full HD Display, external battery, dimm socket, room for a real hard drive). There is no real alternative, but I'm reluctant to buy another one now :-/

  • Freezing problems with brand new Toshiba P500.

    Hi All;
I bought a brand new Toshiba Laptop from Myers Melbourne in June 2010 and its running the base version of WINDOWS-7 64 bit. Its a Satellite P500 PSPGSA-01G003 ( large 18.4 inch screen ) which "does not exist" in the model product listing on this website.
Also it has 4Gb RAM and 2x 500GB HDD. It ran fine for the first 4 weeks or so and then slowly and intermittently it started freezing and not shutting down in the normal manner - generally within a couple of hours of when i opened LARGER size files. On switch on it asked to "restart windows normally" and whilst in the process of running a program, it either ran very, very, very, very, slow ( hanging )or just froze altogether - with only the mouse cursor moving on the screen. To clear the problem and hard reset of the power switch was the only thing that "fixed" it.
I spoke to others I know at work who have Win-7 (as many are clued up with IT and work with it) and they think "I'm crazy" as they have not experienced on their own WIN-7 OS at home.
As the model I have is not specifically listed by Toshiba, I cannot be sure if I can update the drivers - which I should not have to do since its a brand new computer straight out of the box.  I'm so frustrated by the problem I've dumped the computer and now have gone back to WIN-XP on a DELL Laptop, until I can sort this drama out.
My very first issue I had with it after just 4 weeks was it would not turn on at all as though the battery was removed or dead no life at all not even a light on the front panel edge.
That was "fixed" by a hard reset of the laptop ( pressing the on button down for 10 seconds ) with the battery removed - something I have never had to do with computers in the past.
Basically I'm of the opinion - rightly or not - that WIN-7 is not all that stable an O/S, since its built on a Vista platform and that being so - I may dump it and go for something radical like Linux or Ubuntu - or maybe worse still buy a Mac.
But before I go to such trouble and dump WIN-7 and conclude it is a crap OS - I would appreciate some advice as to what the problem might be ! There was a write-up about this in a recent Computer Magazine (APC ?) saying WIN-7 had problems with running sluggish and gummy. Mine is so gummy it freezes. There are dozens of complaint about this very issue on websites and the brand of computer is not the issue nor the common denominator - just the Operating System. It's a Microsoft problem in reality !
Interested in your replies and a solution to restoring my Toshiba "white elephant" !

  • Brand New Hp Pavilion - Hard Disk *beep* and *scratching*

Bought an Hp Pavilion dv4-2145dx from Best Buy about a month ago.
2 weeks into the purchase, I noticed the computer making a "beep" sound (not from the speakers). Each time it would beep, the light below the picture of "3 discs" on my laptop would light up. (hard disk, or hard drive I believe)
It would do this maybe once an hour, or a couple times an hour, or even a few times a minute. It varies. Recently it started making a "scratching" noise (very light, not loud though, coming from the hd area). It will "scratch" for either a quick second, or a few seconds. Each time it does this it sounds like my brand new $600 laptop is about to just crap out.
After the support on HP chat got me absolutely nowhere (even the chat support cant speak english..unbelievable.) im still stuck here. I flashed my BIOS, it didnt do a **bleep** thing. Here I am with a brand new $600 laptop that feels like its about to just crap out. I did some research and I heard Pavilions are known for having faulty hard drives or something on new models.
what should I do to go about fixing this? for free, also. Theres no way im shelling out more cash for a faulty product.

HP does not make the hard drives so HPs are not any more subject to hard drive failures than any other brand of laptop, but such failures do happen. Hold down F10 as you power up to enter the Setup (BIOS) and look for the hard drive self-test. Run the full version. If errors are noted, HP will replace the drive under warranty for free. As I understand it they will ship a new drive and you have to give them a credit card number but they reverse the charge when you return the old drive. Or you can send the unit in. And Best Buy would have let you return it within 14 days and exchange for another one without a restocking charge if it was bad and then BB would have had to deal with HP.

  • Fan Surging on G71- Laptop

OK, this is weird. My fan surges from high to low. Sometimes it stops for a second and then starts again. Sometimes it will stop for several minutes to an hour and everything will operate normally. Then it will start surging for another hour. Sometimes during the surges performance gets really choppy, eg. moving the mouse pointer will make it jump around.
The inside of the cmoputer is clean.
In BIO setup "Fan Always on" is not checked.
I have not upgraded the BIOS.
I dn't think it's software (operating system) related. When it started doing this about three weeks ago, I was running Linux Mint 14. I then switched to Ubuntu 12.04. Then I reloaded Windows 7. Then I went back to Mint, only version 15.
CLUE: When I was running Windows 7, it never woke up from it's first hiberation. Instead, it gave a message and a blue screen of death saying it shut down dur to processor temperatures. It never ran correctly again under Windows. After loading Linux Mint 15, no issues except for the fan surging.

    Oh no!
And it's brand new right?  So a dusty/clogged fan wouldn't apply here.  It's odd that you would have that issue on a Mini as they use a tiny little atom processor, not a super hot i7 or anything like that (Envy Users have a lot of heat issues).  Does the laptop feel hot at all?  If not it could be a faulty fan, if you just bought it I'm sure you can have that looked at/replaced under warranty.
