Fan cuts in even when machine is cool - Satellite P10-504

Hi
The cooling fan on my laptop seems to cut in every minute or so, even when the machine is cool and not busy. It's not the quietest fan in the world so it's pretty annoying!
Does anyone else have any experience of this?
Many thanks
Claire

Hi - yes, I found the setting and put it to silent....and it makes absolutely no difference! lol
Thanks for trying though :-)

  • My 3GS 32gb Iphone has just started cutting out even when battery is almost charged - I have to charge it for a short time to prompt it back into action - I now have to watch apps with the charger connected no problems then?

I have just started getting a problem with my 17 month old 3GS 32gb Iphone (no heavy use) in the sense that it keeps randomly cutting out and it requires a short boost charge to get it started again even when the battery is charged between 70 to 90%.
    Any suggestions?

  • Satellite P10-504: continuous beeps when it is turned on

My P10-504 emits continuous beeps soon after it is turned on. It will stop beeping and reboot itself but go back to the continuous beeps. The way to get it to boot is to hit F2 and go into BIOS and then exit, then it will boot up OK.
I have depressed the keys when booting up to see if it might be sticky keys, but that has no effect.
If I take the all the memory out when it boots up it beeps to tell me I have no memory. If only one bank is in the continuous beeps return.
The one then it tends to do in Windows is to automatically bring up the search tool and constantly refreshes the screen unless esc is hit.
Any ideas or other tests to do??

    Hi,
I don't know where the problem is, but maybe you should try reinstalling the BIOS.

  • G5 Quad – fans run full power, even when machine idles

    Hey all.
I recently have picked up an old G5 Quad Power Mac. A system is installed (10.5.8) and the system boots and runs fine...
Only about 2 minutes after startup the fans start to run like crazy (I there is nothing running in the background which uses much CPU power).
Plus - the G5 Quad has liquid cooling so the fans shouldn't work too hard either...
Does anyone have any ideas what to look after? I already replaced the Li-Battery as my machine thought it's 1970 or so...
Or am I facing a mainboard problem? (I am seeing a little red LED in the inside...)
    Thanks for any advice.
    Dikkker

I have refurbished two G5s with LCS and screaming fans (this was avery common problem with G5 LCS macs), the red light on the motherboard could mean the CPUs need to be re-seated. This red LED light appeared on my mac after I had removed the CPUs to add new thermal paste.
If you have done all the necessary basics with no sucess here are a few things to try next.
    1 - Coolant
As BDAqua mentioned above, coolant evaporates and often leaks at the 'O' rings, to check this you will need to remove the CPUs from the LCS and check for crystalisation (white rice). If you have leakage, it will be time to drain the block, add new coolant and 'O' rings. This is tricky to do but there is lots of info here and on other sites to help you.
    2 - Thermal paste
Replace the thermal paste with Artic MX4.
Try the above and let is know how ou get on.

  • My iPhone is severely messed up. I think my mophie has caused a short in my phone because without it on there my phone cuts off even when my phone was at 100%. Idk what else I can do

My iPhone is severely messed up. I believe my mophie external battery has caused a short in my phone because if I take it off and even sometimes when it is still on, my phone likes to cut off and then try to cut on but cant cut on. I have had this phone since february or so and it is becoming very frustrating. Idk what I can do

    Yes.
Unless you are certain that it was stolen, don't overlook the fact it may have been turned in to a lost and found.

  • New MacBook 2.2Ghz - Fan continuous runninng even if Machine is idle

    Is this normal ?
When the machine is nearly complete idle, example:
running on battery, screen at medium brightness, disk idle (spotlight indexing is complete)
only typing on the keyboard. Only Apple OS installed.
I would not expect to hear any noise of a fan from this kind of computer.
anyone who has a silent MacBook ?
    or,
anyone else who hears the fan ?

That's not normal. Check your Activity Monitor and see if you have any processes running. If it's indexing, the fans may run noisy.
    Try resetting your SMC.

  • Battery charge dropping even when plugged in on Satellite series

I've got a satellite laptop and even though it recognises the power adaptor when plugged in, and the icon in the task bar states 'charging', the percentage of the battery charge appears to be dropping.
This is only whilst the laptop is on, as it does seem to charge the battery when switched off.
I didn't think it used any battery power whilst plugged in, so I'm confused as to not only why the battery doesn't seem to be charging, but also why the battery charge appears to be dropping when the laptop shouldn't be using it anyway.
    Any help appreciated!

    Hi there,
i have seen this problem on my own laptops in the past. even if the laptop is charging, the battery does seem to be dropping in charge.
This indicates that the life of the battery is approaching its end, as there are a limited number of charge cycles for a battery before it eventually dies.
Also when you have the computer turned off charge is still being lost at a considerable rate, as the battery is well, 'dying'.
You cannot do anything about this except to buy a new replacement battery for your laptop from an authorised Toshiba repair centre. this should answer your question.

  • Does anybody have problems with the Macbook Pro Retina 15' fans being really loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris?

    Hey guys,
So after a few months of using the MBP 15' Retina, I've discovered that the fans are incredibly loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris.. are any of you guys having the same problem? Like all of a sudden from be quiet to unbelievably loud just as the games load. So yeah, hopefully someone has the same problem as I am having.
What I was thinking was that the MBP Retina 15' is such a beefed up laptop, it shouldn't require that much CPU to run flash games that are not even THAT graphically intensive to which making the fans that loud..
    Thanks!

Believe it or not, Flash REALLY isn't the issue.
It's hardware makers making devices with less processor performance and requiring software makers to fit into a certain requirements of such. Namely iPhone, iPods and iPads.
Flash is designed to give a lot of features and work across many operating systems, browsers and platforms as a write once solution.
Flash has a certain level of processor performance requirement, which hardware makers like Apple want to build less powerful machines using less expensive processors.
Apple has removed Coverflow 3D effects from iTunes and discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro, leaving only the 15" as having a more powerful 3D capable graphics capability.
So Apple is obviously on a anti-heat/performance quest as they further thin up their hardware, trying to kill Flash by punishing Mac users who want to run it.
Flash runs without a fan sound on my older Mac with dedicated GPU and older OS X verison, no sweat.
Head to your System Preferences > Energy Saver and if you have it, uncheck Automatic Graphics switching, this will use the dedicated GPU and shorted battery life, but if your on power should reduce the heat and fan noise.
Another option is to use SMC fan control and set the fan default speed slightly faster, this will keep the machine slightly cooler and not trigger the higher fan speed as often.
If your running 10.8, you will need to System Preferences > Security > downloads to "Anywhere"
SMC FanControl is over at MacUpdate.com.

  • Qosmio F50-10Z - fan cycling on and off even when idle

My f50 is constantly turning the fan on and off every couple of minutes, even when the machine is idle and has not run any applications.
SpeedFan shows that the GPU is cycling constantly between 55 and 65 degrees C even when there are no apps running (e.g. just after booting) - the fan kicks in at 65, turns off at 55 and then slowly heats up again. The fan noise is noticeable (I don't think it is going full speed, though), and it is a bit abrupt and annoying to be happening constantly and doesn't seem like normal behavior. Core 1 and 2 on Speedfan are cycling between 40 and 45 C
Outside temperature is 20 degrees, so the environment is unlikely to be a factor. I've air blasted the fan for dust (as much as you can seeing as the f50 isn't built to be taken apart by a Home User), but even when the fan is running the output doesn't seem noticeably hot.
I'm am only running toshiba drivers from the website (currently 7.15.11.7590)
My main concern is that this will negatively impact the life of the fan. Am I being overly picky or is there something I could be doing?
    Thanks for any advice

    Thanks for the reply Lars_3.
The notebook came with Windows Home Premium pre-installed - I haven't replaced the OS at all, though I have created a recovery disk at the urging of OS when I first booted it.
The BIOS is up-to-date as I use the Toshiba Tempro service (which again was pre-installed) and occasionally check with the website to make sure I haven't missed anything. I don't like the idea of installing drivers or anything else not released by Toshiba as I've seen people mentioning overheating shutdowns (at much higher temps) from using non-f50 drivers. I regularly keep the base elevated to enhance air circulation, and clean the intakes with compressed air, but it doesn't seem to make much difference.
Everything else works perfectly (and I'm a happy customer) except for the noise factor of the fan switching on every two minutes during even light use (not even 3d game use, which I assume would utilise the 3d card more and be expected to come with greater fan use).

  • Problem: Fan at full speed all the time - even when the Mac is turned off

    Hello,
my Mac mini suffers from a very strange problem. I've had it for half a year now and recently bought a new power adaptor since my old one got damaged. I plugged it in and everything was fine - until half an hour afterwards, when the fan suddenly made itself noticeable at full speed. But it didn't stop; it went on, curiously even when I shut the Mac mini down. That's right. even when the system's turned off. The noise is really unbearable and only stops when I plug off the power cord.
Any ideas why this is happening?

My Mini started doing this yesterday. I came home from work and the fan was going full blast. Even after shutting the machine down, the fan would continue to run at full speed (and it is LOUD...much louder than my full tower desktop PC with 4 80mm fans). The only way to stop the fan is to completely unplug the Mini from the power supply.
I doubt that this is due to faulty wiring as my Mini is plugged in to a very nice UPS unit that conditions the power.
Now, I'm willing to admit that this may be entirely my fault since I have upgraded my Mini with 1 GB of RAM, a Pioneer DVD burner, and a higher capacity hard drive. However, the Mini has been running 24-hours-a-day for 5-6 months since my final upgrade, so it would seem that my upgrades are unrelated to this issue. Also, since someone else is having the same problem, again, my upgrades seem unrelated.
I was told on another forum to try resetting the PMU, which I will try when I get home today. If it works, I'll post. Seems unlikely though since the fan runs even when the Mini is powered down.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. I'm assuming that my Mini is no longer under the 1-year warranty since I have performed so many upgrades myself, so, if this problem is something that can only be fixed by Apple, then it will probably cost an arm and a leg.

  • IPhone bluetooth lowering volume and fans even when not getting a call

Have a friend where when he gets into his car, his phone is even turning the radio volume down and lowering the fan speed even when he doesn't get a call, so he has to keep turning bluetooth or his phone off so it won't mess with that stuff.  Before it would only do that when he would receive a call.  Any idea what might be doing it?

What indications does your friend have that his phone is causing that?
It's possible - maybe an alert/notification that is coming through is causing it.   The sound is trying to play through the bluetooth instead of the handset.   Tell him to mute his phone.

  • Why would the fan on my macbook be constantly runs, even when no applications are running.  Why?

Why would the fan on my MacBook constantly run?  Even when I have no applications running?  Is there a way to determine what is causing this to happen?

JAWade, try resetting the SMC and pram. Not always, but often those resets help problems like yours. Follow these instructions exactly.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Mini fan runs even when turned off

Yesterday the fan started running loudly (seemingly top speed) and it won't stop even when the computer is turned off (only way to kill it is to pull the power cord). The vents on the bottom have a bit of fuzz on them, but nothing outrageous. Other than working on the motherboard (which I'm not capable of doing), what can I try? I did reset PRAM...nothing changed.
    Thanks!

Is the power/sleep light on or off when the Mini is "off" but the fan is running?
If the light is "on" in some fashion, can you start the Mini by pressing the Menu button of your Apple Remote once?
If you can't do this, I fear you have a logic board problem similar to the one first diagnosed by brisbanebazza:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9524465#9524465
Unless you know someone who can do electronics soldering, generally the fix for this would be to replace the logic board, which is usually too expensive to be economical in my opinion.
BTW, no harm in gently vacuuming the fuzz out of the vents, with the Mini closed up, not open.
After you vacuum, you might also try something wacky: try running the mini upside down for a short period of time.
