Fan error and excess heat on ENVY DV6t-7200

I have a laptop-
ENVY DV6t-1200, product#B6C70AV. Windows 8.1.
The computer is only 14 months old, so it is freshly out of warranty. I have been noticing unusually loud fan noise recently. It is not consistent. Sometimes it remains loud for my entire computing session. Sometimes it quiets down after several minutes, sometimes it is not loud at all.  I'd say 75% of the time, it is loud though... And the computer gets VERY hot on the bottom left side in the area of where the fan vents are located.  So hot that it almost burns to the touch after about 30-45 minutes of computer usage.
Just today, after waking laptop from sleep, I had a black screen with white text stating something to the effect that "windows detected the fan is not properly cooling the computer and may result in damage, etc.." I don't remeber exact phrase.  I went to try to take a screenshot by pressing windows key and prt scrn, but the message page disappeared and normal windows 8.1 start screen appeared.  The computer seems to be functioning normally.  But the loud noise, the strange fan warning, and the intense heat lead me to believe I have a growing problem.
ANY ideas on what I should do at this point?

Hello Andrew01,
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I understand you are experiencing a "system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating properly" error. This could be a result of faulty hardware, or a recent software implication. I apologize for the inconvenience but I will do my best to assist you! To start, please follow the troubleshooting in this document: System Fan (90b) error message on startup
Although the title of the document is "System Fan (90b) error message on startup", the troubleshooting steps presented are relevant and effective. I also provided this document because I believe this is the error that you witnessed, though it's possible that is isn't the same error. If those steps do not work, here are some other suggestions to attempt: Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating
If these steps do not work, the hardware is malfunctioning. I would contact HP support, to verify what your options are, or take it to a local repair shop.
You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks again for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

I have 3 USB 2.0 ports but I'm only able to use one of them. Device Manager has a yellow warning symbol next to "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" and I'm unable to find any drivers. I'm not sure what chipset I have because my OS didn't come with anything downloaded, so it's missing many drivers.

    You're very welcome.
When you don't see a complete set of drivers for a selected operating system, that means HP doesn't really support that OS.
They used to not list any drivers for unsupported operating systems, so at least the partial list is better than nothing.
I know that doesn't help those who need drivers for a specific operating system, but some of us know where you can find them.

  • "Fan error" on Thinkpad X201s

    Hello,
My X201s surprisingly overheated and soft-shut down. Upon rebooting the BIOS interrupted startup just to say "Fan Error" and shut down again. Has anyone seen this issue before? Up until now the fan has been working!
I took the keyboard off, and as soon as I press the power button, I see the fan spin for a few seconds then stop - it does not start again and says fan error. I have blown all the dust out, and the fan turns very freely - is there anything else I should try before I send the laptop to be repaired (it is still in warranty but it is a bit of a bore!)?
    Thanks for any help,
    Edward

Either the fan is running a little slow or the temperature sensor circuitry is sick. Send it in. It is a pain, but it is the best choice.

  • Bulging Battery / excessive heat when charging

    Hello,
I have a bit of a problem with my blackberry:
    1. Annoying unread messages that won't go away
    2. Excessive Heat when charging
    3. Bulging Battery
Do you guys thinks that this warrants for a warranty exchange? Or is it ok for me to keep using it?

With annoying unread messages, you have to deal it with your carrier if its SMS or email provider if its email.
With bulging battery and excessive heat when charging - please refrain from using your phone while charging OR you may look for the best Blackberry charger (Model: PSMC04A) because the output is 700mA unlike the charger that came with your phone, its only 200-450mA. This is not meant to use while you are charging but because its a pretty fast charger, it doesnt take much time to complete the 100%

  • T430s Fan Error

    Good afternoon,
It's been about a month since I received my T430s and ever since then it has been resting on a cooling pad when in use.
This morning when I started it up (it had been moved from a different location) I recieved a fan error and the machine shutdown. I started up again and everything was fine.
About a week ago on startup the fan was very loud for a brief moment and then went almost silent in short order (and back to normal).
My question is whether or not I should be concerned about a defective fan unit or whether the occasional fan spin will fail and is normal. I am paranoid becasue my previous laptop was a T60p that was beset with fan problems (I had to have it replaced 3 times.)
I am running the latest BIOS.
    Thanks
    CL

  • System fan error on g62-352ca on startup. are there two fans ie a cpu fan and a system fan?

I get a system fan error on power up?     Are there two fans in the G52-352CA?   Ie a general system fan and a CPU cooling fan or just the one CPU/heatsink fan?
If it is the CPU/heatsink fan then there are 4 part numbers for different options.   Is there some way to tell from the model number or features as to which is needed.    I would prefer to have the part in hand before opening everything up.    Are there better fans to buy and if so how do I find them?       This unit was always running a little on the warm/hot side,

  • T61-Fan Error on startup and cant boot in system

after Thinkpad logo, 2 short 'Bee' sound and 'fan error' message appears on the top left screen, then 1 'Bee' sound, laptop shut down. Althought can boot in system by pressing Esc when 'fan error' appears, but dont know this will damage something like circus or chips.
Anyone have same problem and solved it? Should I change the fan, and which fan (video car fan or cpu fan) is this problem about. I have a limited warranty dont know if the fan is included.
    Thanks

Fan is covered by warranty, when fan stops spinning then it would usually cause this error.

  • Fan Error. Overheats Assistance would be appreciated.

Hello, my laptop has been playing up for quite a while now, over a month. The fan error constantly appears on my laptop and it always heats up when im running basic things such as web browsers and even word. I only recently discovered that there was a program called HP Coolsense which some people on forums claimed saved their laptop. I accessed the program and i didnt notice a real difference but it still gave me hope. The next day I turned on my laptop and HP coolsense had mysteriously dissappeared. The only thing i had done the previous day was a few hp driver updates. I have really begun to become depressed with thi error. I attempted to blow compressed air into the vents to no avail, After five days and 5 empty bottles of compressed air my situation has become dire. I  have upgraded BIOS like many of the pages requested. However I am hesitant to reset my laptop or send it back to HP as some have done? I have watched many videos on opening up the laptops to access the fans and heat sink however I find it horrible that the process is so delicate in these paticular laptops as i believe that i have to remove the keyboard and other parts of the laptop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,mglcamo

HP provides very good Service Manual documentation for notebook disassembly. One of the main things is to keep track of where the screws go. Other thn that it is pretty simple, just a little time consuming. My laptop was giving no error and just shutting down when the fan would just stop turning. I used a pin in the vent to get it started again but finally ended vup replacing the fan which solved the problem. There was some dust inside but not as much as I expected for a 6 year old notebook. Make sure you clean all that out, especially what may be on the heat sink. Follow the service manual and be careful and you shouldn't have a problem. I looked up my notebook and got the part number for the fan and searched the internet. I got my replacement fan from Amazon for $7.39 plus $4.80 for shipping. The old one was also making noise, maybe from the use of the pin, but purrs lke a kitten now.

  • Fan Error Lenovo T500 T510 T400 T410 T60 T61 - rejuvinating the fan

I finally got that dreaded "Fan Error" at boot time on my T500.  After some research on this board, this is what I have concluded:
1-  hit Escape, and the machine will boot.  It can do a lot of stuff without a fan turning.  Gaming caused it to overheat.  Either the processor would slow down (by being intermittant) or you get the black screen of death.
2-  It is relatively easy to follow the Hardware Maintenence Manual and remove the fan and heatsink assembly.  Once the assembly is removed, pry open the fan, and remove the blades and clean and lubricate the shaft.  My fan restarted, and the Fan Error went away.  No need to replace the fan.
3-  Unfortunately the machine overheats now (black screen of death), even though the fan does operate.  I traced this to a too liberal application of the thermal joint compound.  Made the compound a very thin film, and that seems to have helped.  Also when replacing heat sink assembly and before bolting it, wiggle it while pressing on it so the thermal joint compound spreads itself at the surfaces of contact.  This seems to have helped.
Anything else that you may want to add to this thread?

Thanks a lot! It makes sense.
Yes, I have been using the ESC bypass for some time, untill I really could not stand by anymore--the over heating.
I am thinking about manipulating the fan 'manually', if it could pass the booting, very good; if not, it's not completely unacceptable to run a small program@startup along with the work.
Not ready to say bye yet,  will keep trying.
    Thanks again!
So if you hit ESC, does your fan work normally, or do you overheat?  I had the impression that your fan would work normally if you hit ESC.
My fan was always a problem on the T500 (not on my new W540).  It was extremely noisy and was constantly on even at no load times.  So I opened the laptop and cut one of the 3 wires on the fan (I am sure it is a power wire), and installed a manual switch.  So when the thing overheated, I could manually turn the fan on.  This worked for about a week and then something gave up, and the fan stopped working altogether.  (don't fix something that is not broken!)  I had to take the front cover off, and place a PC fan in the top left corner to cool the radiator.  This was not as effective as the original fan, but let me do my job.  Then the loose switch on this ersatz fan one day accidentallyshorted the fluoroscent backlight PC board of my display and I lost my display backlight!  I had to pry open my display and using two 60W bulbs project light to the back of the LCD so I could read the display!  This is when I decided to punt and ordered the W540.  The fan is quiet and works when it has to work.

  • FAN ERROR

FAN ERROR displays today, previous the fan was running noisily..now screen resolution is poor... will this crash my laptop?

Hi Peanut, why didn't I grab that user name - it's great! Welcome to the Lenovo User Community!
Please be patient for other members to respond (remember this is a user-to-user forum). You could help by providing more information about your system type and the operating system you are using.
A common cause of fan errors is overheating due to a dust and fluff collected in the fan and heat sink. Look in the fan vents with a flashlight. If you see dust monsters, try gently vacuuming it out, or remove the keyboard and blow it out...
    Hope this helps!

  • Fan Error message on T43 after replacing it.

I have a T43 (2687-DVU) that received a Fan Error at boot up.  I replaced it with a new fan (am sure it is correct fru) and the fan is working fine.  The temperatures are also fine on the unit (I can hear the fan, feel it blow out heat - bottom line the fan is working).  I have reseated the unit a few times - made sure thermal paste is correct - connector to motherboard is connected (otherwise the fan will not work).  I can ESC to bypass the error and run what appears normally.  I don't think I have a fan error, except in the mind of a deranged motherboard, perhaps.  I have 2 pronged question to throw out.
Would eveyone agree that this probably a motherboard problem or a fuse on the motherboard problem?
Secondly, since the unit is out of warranty, would you bother to replace the motherboard,or would you just hit the escape key and live with it. ( I know this is just an opinion in most regards, but just wondering if it's worth fixing just to avoid a keystroke at boot time).
    Thanks

I'd be guessing something along the lines of a thermal sensor gone haywire.
If the machine were mine, I'd run it until it dies and then swap the planar if the rest of the laptop is still in good shape. But it's your ThinkPad.
    My $0.02 only...
    Good luck.

  • T430s fan noise and fan speed monitor not working?

Hi, I just bought this T430s from the outlet store. I noticed a rather loud fan noise and found out s lot of compalints about the T430 model. I guess the problem I have is not as severe as those T430 users (e.g. the noise may not be as loud), but I still want to monitor the fan speed. Here's my problem:
    1. none of the third party software can show fan speed, they can only show the cpu temperature, such as speedfan and aida64.
    2. I tried to download the fanspeedcontrol driver from lenovo, but after installing it, the task manager does not show that the fanspeedcontrol exe. is working.
I do not want to change the fan speed, but just want to monitor the speed so that I can have a better understanding of whats going on. Does anyone have the similar problem?
    Thanks.

Hi Alan, (I know this conversation was from several months back),
I don't know the answer to your questions.  It seems that your fan is operational, as far as its most basic functional requirement.
I don't have experience with any particular software programs or widgets that indicate fan speed, sorry.
Do you have any view, through software, of the CPU (and GPU?) sensed temperature?  Those would be very good data to observe.
If it were either disconnected or non-functional, I assume that your computer would report a POST error right after power-on (and self test).
But I just wanted to suggest here that in an unfortunate possible scenario, consider if the thermal grease on the heat sink(s) was inadequate (or was missing), then the fan would be running higher than normal (probably always spinning at a high rate), and it won't be taking enough heat away from the processor(s), i.e. inadequate cooling.
Which could be corrected by a technician (or DIY).  This is pure speculation, it is not a definite, at all.

  • Fan Error on W510

A friend has a Lenovo W510 that is giving him a fan error when he boots it up. He took it to Best Buy (first mistake) and they couldn't diagnose it, but sent it off for him. Whomever they sent it to claimed the motherboard was bad. After getting it back he asked me to look at it. Doing a Google search it looks like the fans failing on these is very common. That was my initial thought. I took the keyboard out to see if I could blow some dust in there to get it to work temporarily. After cleaning it out, it still didn't work. What I noticed though is that as soon as I hit the power button the fan spins up fine and spins for a second or two and then stops. Then the error pops up. Since the fan will spin up, I'm thinking it's probably not bad and definately not seized. Does this sound like a motherboard issue, or is something else going on here? Is there a way to bypass this fan error screen? I've read to hold escape, but that doesn't seem to matter. Thanks guys.

Thnx richk,I have this problem. I cleaned it well yesterday, and started successfully once, then no joy on subsequent start ups. I'm limping along by putting a small vac to the outlet grill at startup.I'm wondering if just buying the fan, is smart. (Waiting for delivery from Hong Kong, or high price is not appealing.) It looks like they are more of an "in stock" item, than the fan w sink.Is reuse of the existing heat sync is smart? With that approach, do I get into repasting to the CPU, etc?Thnx,Denis
