Fan Error Lenovo T500 T510 T400 T410 T60 T61 - rejuvinating the fan

I finally got that dreaded "Fan Error" at boot time on my T500. After some research on this board, this is what I have concluded:
1- hit Escape, and the machine will boot. It can do a lot of stuff without a fan turning. Gaming caused it to overheat. Either the processor would slow down (by being intermittant) or you get the black screen of death.
2- It is relatively easy to follow the Hardware Maintenence Manual and remove the fan and heatsink assembly. Once the assembly is removed, pry open the fan, and remove the blades and clean and lubricate the shaft. My fan restarted, and the Fan Error went away. No need to replace the fan.
3- Unfortunately the machine overheats now (black screen of death), even though the fan does operate. I traced this to a too liberal application of the thermal joint compound. Made the compound a very thin film, and that seems to have helped. Also when replacing heat sink assembly and before bolting it, wiggle it while pressing on it so the thermal joint compound spreads itself at the surfaces of contact. This seems to have helped.

I am thinking about manipulating the fan 'manually', if it could pass the booting, very good; if not, it's not completely unacceptable to run a small program@startup along with the work.

So if you hit ESC, does your fan work normally, or do you overheat? I had the impression that your fan would work normally if you hit ESC.
My fan was always a problem on the T500 (not on my new W540). It was extremely noisy and was constantly on even at no load times. So I opened the laptop and cut one of the 3 wires on the fan (I am sure it is a power wire), and installed a manual switch. So when the thing overheated, I could manually turn the fan on. This worked for about a week and then something gave up, and the fan stopped working altogether. (don't fix something that is not broken!) I had to take the front cover off, and place a PC fan in the top left corner to cool the radiator. This was not as effective as the original fan, but let me do my job. Then the loose switch on this ersatz fan one day accidentallyshorted the fluoroscent backlight PC board of my display and I lost my display backlight! I had to pry open my display and using two 60W bulbs project light to the back of the LCD so I could read the display! This is when I decided to punt and ordered the W540. The fan is quiet and works when it has to work.

I've had my Macbook pro for about 3 1/2 years now. It has worked great until recently. A few months ago I noticed that the fan would always run really fast when I was doing simple tasks. After a few weeks/months, the fan was still really fast but it also started to make these loud noises. Now, it only occasionally makes the loud noise if I move my computer after its been stationary for a while. The fan no longer works at all and my computer gets exceptionally hot almost instantly when I turn it on. T410s Fan Error on Boot but works sometime...really confused

Hi, I bought the t410s back in 2010 april or march. About 7-8 month later, I started getting Fan Error on boot after the thinkpad screen. If I don't do anything, the computer shuts off automatically, but if I hit escape, it would continue boot and start up (without a working fan). I know that there are other threads about the fan error but none of them mentioned this. Most of the times after it continue booting after escape on fan error, I would do a cold reboot and the Fan Error would be gone. So Im guessing that the hardware is fine because if they faulty, then it shouldn't work at all. So recently, I did a clean install of windows 7 and updated all drivers and bios. After update, it was working for like 4 days so I thought it was just a software issue but now the problem have returned, same as before. Sometimes it boot with fan error, sometime no error. And after shows fan error, if I escape and reboot, most of the time the error would be gone. Anyone know why this is or what is going on here? Anything would be appreciated, thanks.

since it is hard to replicate this issue as sometimes it does happen and sometimes it does not, i do recommend bringing the unit to an authorize service center for them to investigate.

T400 & T410 Batteries Compatible?

Title says it all. If I were to get a T410, would I be able to use my T400's 9-cell battery with it?

no they are not compatible, the W510, T410, T510, T400s/T410s use a totally different format batteries to the previous thinkpads.

Lenovo T500 freezes at startup when updating to newest ATI driver (Windows 7 RC x64)

Hi I have a big problem with my lenovo T500. I installed Windows 7 RC x64 to my lenovo T500 (2082-53G) and when I install the ATI catalyst beta driver x64 v9.6 from ATI's homepage, my computer freezes at startup (some activity on HD but I can't move my mouse and many processes faile to start at boot). Problem occurs only when win7 beta driver for system interface or ricoh multicard reader is installed because it worked ok until I installed those drivers. My T400 did this. I installed Win 7 with integrated, installed the ATI 9.6 suite, and never really tried the discrete for the first few days. Then when I tried it, it would instantly freeze at the Welcome screen and the loading circle would just freeze up.
I uninstalled the device and chose remove driver in device manager, and reinstalled the one from 7's original install and it still did this. Mine would just sit there and freeze up after the welcome screen when using discrete, however integrated always worked. I could only boot up in discrete with Safe Mode with Networking.
I ended up doing a system restore to right after I installed Windows, before I installed the ATI 9.6, (4 days ago, so not too bad for me) and booted straight into discrete. Windows update installed the driver for me, now it works perfectly. I am currently using the discrete card with no freeze up issues in the last day.
If you can't do that, you may have to reformat, just let windows handle the ATI driver itself (boot into discrete while installing) and it should work.
I wish I could get the higher performance drivers, but I assume they will figure this issue out and fix it soon with the next driver release.

CPU fan error

My CPU fan failed. I replaced it with a new fan. The is working fine. However, I get the CPU fan error message on booting. After pressing F2 key, the PC boots and is working fine for prolonged hours. While I tried to determine the cause of the error message from the BIOS, I found that there is nothing to select in the Advance tab. I want to know why this error message appears every time I boot the machine and how to resolve it.

The replacement fan should equal the "rpm" of the former fan. If it's slower, you will be this warning. If its too slow, the computer will shutdown.

Pavilian m95ooy f2 case fan error

My fan has been making noises for along time and it finaly came up with f2 error. I bought 3 different fans, all with 92mm x 3 pin conectors. One was even a 3 speed fan put only worked on high with low rpm's. The oem fan has low rpm's and I could not find a new one anyware The last fan was a cooler master standard 90mm st1 which runs @ a higher rpm. My problem is that when I fisrt start up the comp. it spins fast and then runs slow with a f2 error. I cleaned out the OEM fan and it works fine with NO f2 error until it warms up and then it squeels and the computer shuts down. I don't beleive it is the motherboard. I have a desktop Pavilian M9500Y with windows 7 on it. # different fans from 3 different manufactures can't be bad and I tested the motherboard using HP hardware diagnostics tool and can up PASSED!!! Is their anyone out there that can tell me which is the PROPER FAN to buy and install???????? The oem fan is no longer available to buy...

thats means the bios is up to date do you have the warranty if yes then pls contact the hp techinical support and just ask for the part number of the fan from them and install it.you can also get the fan from hp part store by calling them.

Black macbook: not sure if its the fan, or something else (noise)

I got this macbook is september. I had no issues with it, when suddenly it began making noises. Now, I'm a gadget-blog reader, so I've been aware of Macbooks making the "moooo" sound from the fan; however, I'm not sure if my noise is the fan or something else. I get more of a "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" noise.
1) I have the macbook plugged in
2) I leave it on all the time
3) It began to hear the "whrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" when:
a) activate visualizer in iTUNES
b) download shows off iTUNES
c) have a bunch of windows open and the 512MB Memory is struggling to access each window, if I say, I want to close them.
Considering this is the uncrashable, flexible, awesome OSX, and should be pesk-free, like say WINXP...I would expect such problems to not exist on the glossy OSX.
I'm currently studying abroad in the United Kingdom. I bought this macbook in San Francisco just before I left. I have plenty of warranty left. Is this a big issue? It annoys the **** out of me. None of the macbooks demoed in the store had this problem. So in a way, this is false advertising, since I'm reading that a lot of people have this noise issue.
I've fully updated my firmwares with software updater, but I still get the noise. So I'm at situation that needs some outside help as to what I should do.

My dv6120us laptop boots, but the fan (which works in another computer) does not come on...

I have a dv6120us laptop that I am having fan troubles with. I don't have an OS loaded but the CoA is for XP media center edition. The computer boots up and can access the bios if necessary, but the CPU cooling fan never kicks on. I have pulled it out and cleaned it, but that didn't fix the problem. It doesn't seem to matter how long the computer runs, it does not shut down either. I have pulled the fan out and tried it with a different motherboard and the fan came on like it was supposed to, so I know the fan itself is not faulty. I have also tried a different fan (same, correct part#) with this motherboard, but the second one didn't work either. I don't know if I'm dealing with a problem getting power to the fan or whether it is an automatic shut down problem, maybe both. I'm guessing that I have issues with the motherboard, and I feel relatively comfortable troubleshooting and attempting repairs on the motherboard, but I am at a loss for where to look for my problem. Is there anyone that can help me troubleshoot the motherboard and try to get this fan working? The motherboard HP part# is 434723-001.

I think I have found my problem... I know how to fix this, but I do not know how to identify the specs for this part or where I can find a replacement. I would hate to replace the whole motherboard for an inexpensive fix like this.

The fan must work hard mirroring from MBA to ATV and the computer gets very hot, solution?

I bought an Apple TV (3) for watching web tv by mirroring the screen. The picture is good but the computer gets hot, very hot. The fan on the computer is working hard and the sound of the fan interferes my TV watching. Is it normal that the fan is running as much as it does? It starts just after 3-5 minutes. Is there any solution?

I just ran a 13 min Youtube video from my Macbook Air (mid 2012) i5 on Air Play Mirroring to Apple TV3 and I didn't experience any appreciable heat nor any fan noise.
My MBA is encased in a clear Speck case, and my house temperature is about 21C (72F).
I just wonder if Hejmattias has something else going on or are we just seeing manufacturing variation?

Can the fan break from running too long?

Yesterday I had a high-energy application running on my 13'' MacBook Pro Retina for a good five hours straight. I've used this application a couple times, but never for this long; the fan always runs with this application. Needless to say, the fan was running pretty loud for a while and the MacBook got pretty hot. Today, I launched the same application and the fan is noticeably a lot quieter. Also, the application seems to run a bit slower with some hiccups, wheras before it had run seamlessly. Is it possible I somehow damaged the fan by running the application too long?

It's possible for a fan to burnout. Apple store can replace, not too epensive, you may be able to find online if you do not have isues pulling the MBP apart. How to vids online as well.

Problem two - replacing the fan on video card

I have a NVidea GeForce4 Ti video card in my G4. The fan cooling the GPU stopped spinning, although I don't know when. I ordered the identical fan on-line, thinking that it wouldn't be that hard to get the old fan off. Apparently, it isn't as easy as I thought. There are two black plastic pieces which springs connecting the fan/heatsink to the board. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to extract them.
So, then I thought about just removing the fan and leaving the original heat sink attached. I got 6 of the 7 screws out, but one's really tight. Assuming that I can eventually get that one out as well, I still need to extract the wires from the surface of the card... it appears that they are glued on in one spot.
Has anyone here tried changing the fan on this (or another) video card who might have some insights in how to proceed? Thanks in advance for your help!

I purchased my replacement fan from "Surplus Sales of Nebraska." They actually carry the fan originally installed on the card. There website is:

If you google "NV-1035-C2", it should pop right up (I get is as the first hit). They're only $6, but they have a $10 minimum order. I ended up with two fans.
I've been busy, so I haven't tried removing the fan yet. I read on the web, though, that once you remove the two black plastic pieces, you should put the video card into a freezer bag and then place it in the freezer for a few hours. Supposedly, you can then remove the fan with a twisting motion. Apparently, it's pretty easy to damage the GPU if you pull it straight off. That being said, if you can remove all of the screws on the fan, you can actually leave the heatsink in place and just replace the fan. I tried that, but I have one screw that's stuck.
Anyway, I think this is still the least of my problems. Although I haven't tried rebooting recently, I had trouble mounting a DVD today which I suspect is related to my first problem (where my hard drives don't always show up when I try to boot the computer). I'm becoming convinced that it's going to be a power supply or motherboard issue (ugh). If I get a chance to try removing the fan from the board, I'll let you know.

To answer, there's no such pinhole reset button on the T410s. It's a feature on select, newer generation models.

NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Errors on Lenovo T500 2082-58M running Windows XP.

NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Errors are occurring on
five out of five Lenovo T500 laptops 2082-58M tested.
I can get the error to re-occur consistently by installing
IBM Director Client version 5.20 or 5.23, taking remote control and then within
the remote session I initiate a PC restart. This re-produces these errors
without fail.
I've also received this same error without Director but am
unable to cause this to re-occur consistently.
My Findings:
Changing the BIOS Settings from the default settings of :
BIOS Config > Display
Default Primary Video Device:[Internal]
Boot Display Device:[ThinPad LCD]
Graphics Device:[Discrete Graphics]
OS Detection for Switchable Graphics:[Enabled]
To the following settings resolves the issue though this
causes the installed and previously working ATI driver not to detect the video
device.
BIOS Config > Display
Default Primary Video Device:[Internal]
Boot Display Device:[ThinPad LCD]
Graphics Device:[Integrated Graphics]
OS Detection for Switchable Graphics:[Disabled]
What I have tried:
o Updated the BIOS and Drivers to Latest available
o Re-Installed the Display Driver, Downgraded the
Display Driver
o Removed the Display Driver and left BIOS
settings enabled (NMI errors re-occur)
To get to the above findings I tried removing /
re-installing pretty much every driver and disabling every option within the
BIOS. I am only listing what I believe is now relevant to the identified
problem. I can provide further information upon request.
Anyone able to help ?

the switchable gfx doesn´t work in XP. In XP you have to choose gfx options in bios before booting os.
Please try:
Default Primary Video Device:[Internal]
Boot Display Device:[ThinPad LCD]
Graphics Device:[discrete Graphics]
OS Detection for Switchable Graphics:[Disabled]
