  • Fan Error message on T43 after replacing it.

I have a T43 (2687-DVU) that received a Fan Error at boot up.  I replaced it with a new fan (am sure it is correct fru) and the fan is working fine.  The temperatures are also fine on the unit (I can hear the fan, feel it blow out heat - bottom line the fan is working).  I have reseated the unit a few times - made sure thermal paste is correct - connector to motherboard is connected (otherwise the fan will not work).  I can ESC to bypass the error and run what appears normally.  I don't think I have a fan error, except in the mind of a deranged motherboard, perhaps.  I have 2 pronged question to throw out.
Would eveyone agree that this probably a motherboard problem or a fuse on the motherboard problem?
Secondly, since the unit is out of warranty, would you bother to replace the motherboard,or would you just hit the escape key and live with it. ( I know this is just an opinion in most regards, but just wondering if it's worth fixing just to avoid a keystroke at boot time).
    Thanks

I'd be guessing something along the lines of a thermal sensor gone haywire.
If the machine were mine, I'd run it until it dies and then swap the planar if the rest of the laptop is still in good shape. But it's your ThinkPad.
    My $0.02 only...
    Good luck.

    George

  • Cooling Fan Error Message & Computer Shut Down

    Hello,
I have a 2 1/2 Satellite running W7 and recently started having a problem, receiving a Cooling System error message which tells me to shut down the computer immediately.  I did and left it off to cool, then started it up again.  Less than 5 minutes later, same message and the computer shut itself down.  The fan starts normally, then becomes burdened, then stops.  Is this actually fan related or hard drive related?

    Hello Peter,
I already have the new BIOS you sent me.  The problem persists.  Toshiba has no Authorized Service for computers where I live (Brazil) as far as I can see on their site, which I can't understand since it is a global company.  So, I can not use my business computer now.  Apparently, I either have to ship it to the States (which will cost me more than the computer is worth, and I'm better off buying a new one of a brand that takes care of its customers globally), or I have to try and find someone here who thinks they might be able to discover the problem and fix it.  Any suggestions?

  • Fan doesn't come on at all but no error messages

I previously had a HP laptop that kept getting a cooling fan error message on startup. I updated the BIOS and tried a few other things suggested by HP support but nothing worked. I ended up ignoring the message, pressing to continue and usually after a couple of minutes the fan would kick in and it would be all good.
For Xmas, my hubby bought me a new laptop rather than pay $$$$ to get old one serviced and I just realised that I have never heard the cooling fan on at all with this one (15-r038TU). This new laptop gets very hot but I have NEVER had an error message about the fan - but it's very obvious that the fan is not turning on... ever.
I have updated the BIOS today but there has been no difference. Any recommendations? From searching these forums I can only find people who DO get the error message. I'm not getting any error even though my computer gets really hot and the fan is definitely not running at all. Obviously cooling fans are a big problem with HP. Think I'll be going with a different brand next time!

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
I am sorry you are having issues -- it is particularly tough when the computer is unaware it has a problem.
If the fan is not running and you continue to use the computer, then it is only likely to damage the computer and things will get worse instead of better.
You should contact HP and talk to a Technician.  This is the course of action when the computer indicates a hardware problem -- throwing software at it won't make the fan spin.
If you MUST continue to use the computer for business reasons, then by all means, protect your data and stick a notebook cooler under that notebook right away.
Please back up any critical, personal data to an external source -- that is, somewhere other than on the computer so that you can get to it.  USB Drive, Cloud, somewhere...
The notebook is covered by hardware Warranty -- call for help:

  • Fan Error on X201

I bought my X201 (3249CTO) last october from lenovo's website. 2 weeks ago, my laptop became unable to boot up except showing "Fan Error" message. Before that, my laptop sometimes suddenly shut down(directly to dark screen) with no reason.
The Warranty is going to expire tonight. I still can not find the entry to report this error and ask for repair on this lenovo's official website. Most links I've seen are "check....", "check...", or "extend or upgrade"... and some software solutions. I can not find any tech support email. When I go to the "CONTACT" page, most contact info is about sale, business. After I click, click and click, I found that "800-xxxxxxx" tech support number. Following the instructions, I press 1, 1, 1... and hearing a lot of electric voice"please go to www.lenovo.com.....", I heard that their manual service was only available during 8a - 8p Mon - Fri. While I'm most on class during that time. Why don't they have an email for warranty service?
How can I contact them to return my laptop back and get repaired?

    @LilHayah,
You would need to call the tech support via the number 800-xxxxxx then they would advice you on how to get the laptop shipped back for service or if you have a onsite service.
There are no emails for tech support.

  • Fan Error on x220

    Hi everyone,
I have a (now) 2 year old Thinkpad X220 with Intel i7 processor (CTO 4286) with no warranty (only got the 1 year limited warranty, as I assumed this was a premium laptop).
Sadly enough a month ago the fan stopped working, and I get a "fan error" message on boot-up. This as, in effect, turned my +1200 dollar laopt quite useless.
What I have tried to fix it so far is the following (in this order)
    1. Blown out dust from the fan area
    2. vacuum cleaned fan area
    3. Dissambled unit, vacuum cleaned fan unit
    4. Applied small bit of oil to fan unit mechanism
    5. Reapplied thermal paste to cooling unit
    6. REPLACED fan unit and thermal paste
However, the message is still there and my laptop (which cost me an arm and a leg, as I was planning to use this laptop for 5 years - just like my x41 before it) .. is still dead.
Does anyone else had this problem (especially those that did not have the warranty anymore), and does anyone else has any other suggestion? Would much appreciate it, as I need this laptop and cannot afford a new one..

"fan error" does not mean "too hot"; it means "running too slow". You probably need need a new fan. (The only other things involved are the fan sensor and a fuse (both part of the motherboard). They are unlikely causes and expensive to fix.

  • Fan error on T42...

FAN ERROR message on T42 (model 2373)
is there a way to clean the fan?
    the problem is intermittent

well you can try to clean the fan, just take off the keyboard. And then use a can of compressed air to blow out the dusts (but make sure you hold down the fan vane).

  • How to bypass Fan Error on X1 Carbon

    Hi folks,
We're in a real pickle right now trying to help out one of our faculty members.  She needs to use her new X1 Carbon laptop but is getting a 'Fan Error' message on her X1 Carbon immediately after turning it on.
Is there anyway we can bypass this error on the X1 Carbon?  We're trying the Escape key with no success.  We understand that the laptop may need a fan replaced, but we really need to access data for an important conference tomorrow in Dubai.
Any ideas or suggestions?  Thank you kindly!!

    try this method.
Otherwise you would be in a pickle. This is one reason why i dislike Ultrabook format with their proprietary SSD format.

  • T61-Fan Error on startup and cant boot in system

after Thinkpad logo, 2 short 'Bee' sound and 'fan error' message appears on the top left screen, then 1 'Bee' sound, laptop shut down. Althought can boot in system by pressing Esc when 'fan error' appears, but dont know this will damage something like circus or chips.
Anyone have same problem and solved it? Should I change the fan, and which fan (video car fan or cpu fan) is this problem about. I have a limited warranty dont know if the fan is included.
    Thanks

Fan is covered by warranty, when fan stops spinning then it would usually cause this error.

  • Start up screen black saying cooling fan error

I recently turned my computer on and right away pops up cooling fan error. Further use might damage computer. Something along the lines as that. I've done what they told me with using canned air and blowing that through the vents. And I turned it back on and it still came on with that screen. I need some help please. I know I've owned this laptop for about 3 years or so but it's worked perfectly fine since I bought it. I really need someone to guide me on what I should do!

I saw your post regarding the cooling fan error message. If you already used canned air to clean out the fan then you next step would be to replace it. If you can provide me with your product number I should be able to find a user guide that will show you how to replace it.

  • Z61m fan stops after a few seconds - fan error, shutdown

    Hello,
while booting the fan works fine for 3-5 second, but then it suddenly stops and i get a "fan error" message and the system shuts down. i cleaned the fan and look for any obstacles - but with no success. Once (several tries) the fan start working just shortly after the fan error message appeared, but the system shutted down too.
    TIA
    Steve

Your first avenue of problem resolution is to get a new fan, if that don't work then the motherboard is the ultimate culprit of your problem, there is not much other way of solving your hardware problem.

  • E530 shuts down when sleeping - fan error?

I have an E530 that seems to shut down after I ignore it for 15 or 20 minutes.  When I restart it, I get a brief "fan error" message.  It tells me that it was shut down unexpectedly, etc.  It always starts up just fine.  the computer is not running hot.  Somehow, I think this is not a real problem with the fan but something about the sleep process that is causing the fan to stop and then the computer shuts down.

Follow up - I set the timer and specifically watched the computer.  It is set to go to sleep after 45 minutes.  At 45 minutes the power light went out.  When I restarted, I got the fan error.

  • CPU fan error

My CPU fan failed. I replaced it with a new fan. The is working fine. However, I get the CPU fan error message on booting. After pressing F2 key, the PC boots and is working fine for prolonged hours. While I tried to determine the cause of the error message from the BIOS, I found that there is nothing to select in the Advance tab. I want to know why this error message appears every time I boot the machine and how to resolve it.

The replacement fan should equal the "rpm" of the former fan. If it's slower, you will be this warning. If its too slow,  the computer will shutdown.

  • Fan error fixed, but for how long? (T410)

Hello, I recently inherited a Lenovo T410 (2518), which was a former work computer. The warranty would have expired around mid last year, and I gather it had been in office use since around 2010. I don't think it would have been doing any intensive processor heavy work either. Soon after I got it, I started getting the "fan error" message when booting up, which I understand is quite common with these models. I gave the computer to a friend of a friend, who works in IT. He was able to fix the issue by taking the computer apart and spraying the fan with some kind of expensive silicone spray. What troubled me is that when he gave it back, he said that it could work for another 5 years or 5 minutes! He also said that if it were to fail again, it wouldn't be worth repairing. Has anyone else ever fixed their fan error in the same way, with good results? Or is it best to replace the fan - and if so, are there good instructions on how to do that? Thanks

Thanks! That should be enough info, indeed. But before ordering a new fan I would check if it's not blocked by dust bunnies, could you please try the following?
Remove the battery and disconnect the laptop from the AC adapter
Download the hardware maintenance manual from here:  click me!
Check chapter 1080 on how to remove the keyboard
No need to disconnect the keyboard from the motherboard, is enough if you lift it and move it down a little
Check if the fan is dirty/dusty. If yes, first block it from spinning using your finger and apply compressed air to the blades (see this article <here>, it's in Spanish but you can see the pictures how to clean the fan)
    Connect the AC adapter again
Turn on the T410, do you still get the fan error? Or do you get the error and the fan is still moving?
Report the findings here and we see what steps should follow
