Fan going into full blast for no reason

the fan in my macbook has been going to 6000 rpm for no reason. like when im not doing anything, suddenly i hear the fans start spinning. usually, at 2500(min speed for my mb) rpm, it is barely audible. then suddenly i hear this low hum, and i look at the smcfancontrol, and notice that my fan's at 6100rpm. any idea why? is this normal? oh, and i usually have my itunes on most of the time.

Yes, do check Activity Monitor (just type activity in Spotlight). Click on the CPU column and the most demanding application (the one that's sucking up your CPU cycles) will show up at the top of the list.
For me when this happened (twice so far in a week or so) has been Airport. So just disable or force quit the offending application. For me I just turned the Airport off, waited about 15 seconds and turned it back on and all was well.
Good luck

  • Mac Pro, Fans fire up full speed for no reason - randomly!

So, here is another fan issue with the Mac Pro, and I am at a loss. Perhaps someone can help me with this one. I have a Mac Pro I bought in mid '07, dual 2.66 GHz. I have 2 7300GT video cards, which don't have fans of their own to be making the noise...
The computer, when left doing nothing will ramp up full speed for God knows what reason. There is usually almost nothing open for applications, and no major processes running. Menu Meters shows the processor load to be minimal, not a heavy load that would cause heat-issues from processors working hard.
There is really no way to get the fans to slow back down either. The machine is still fully functional, I can open, close or work on software, so nothing is "frozen". I have quit all applications to no avail. The machine will not go to sleep when this occurs, and half the time will not power off using the shut down menu selection either; requiring a forced shut down. Upon reboot, it is fine... (until it decides once again to take off).
This is not the fans roaring when waking from sleep issue, I have had that one as well (bad ram).
    Thoughts?

Last night, after I shut down, my fans slowly ramped up into high gear. They went to full rotation, and I let it whirr for four or five minutes, thinking it would shut itself off. It never did, so I just pulled the plug on the CPU. I plugged it back in five seconds later, and it stayed shut down after that.
It's been working more or less flawlessly other than this... most stable Mac I've ever had.

  • Hard drive fan comes on full blast for no apparent reason!

I have had this problem since buying my new 27in iMac. It happens maybe once or twice a month. I took it to apple and they said "everything is ok".
I come home from work at night and the machine sounds like a leaf blower on my desk. I pull up iStat widget and it reports the following
    CPU:
    User 0%
    System 0%
    Nice 0%
    Idle 99-100%
    Memory:
    Wired 587mb
    Active 764mb
    Inactive 301mb
    Free 2.29gb
    Temps:
    HD Macintosh 95
    CPU 86
    Ambient 65
    GPU diode 103
    GPU heatsink 101
    mem contoller 103
    Northbridge 131
    Optical 92
    Fans:
    Optical Drive 998rpm
    Hard Drive 5272rpm
    CPU 940
So it is obvious that the HD fan is the one making all the noise, the question is why is it running at that rpm? The machine is cool to the touch and has been at idle all night. Mac Genious had me reset the SMC in several different ways and if that didnt work, bring it in to the store. I did, and he said everything looks fine and passed all diagnostics. He said next time it happens to go into activity monitor and see what is creating the most CPU usage NOT ONE TASK IS USING MORE THAN .9% of CPU. I see nothing out of the ordinary in there. I think a fix for this would be to figure out why the unit doesnt ever actually go to sleep on its own. As soon as I force it to sleep the fans stop and when I wake it they stay off.

  • HT3205 mac going into sleep mode for no reason

my mac is playing up. Every time I open it, the screen will appear briefly then flash off as if I have put it on sleep mode. When I close the top and re-open it it does the same thing again, sometimes it works for a while, but will turn itself off again after a few mintues.
I have tried charging it, turning it off etc and nothing seems to be working. Does anyone know what this means and could help me please?

Problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery (to remove the battery - click here: MacBook or MacBook Pro).
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Firefox goes into offline mode for no reason

Periodically, with no consistency I can detect, Firefox puts itself into offline mode. After clicking the "try again" button from one to several times, it finally recognizes that there is in fact an Internet, and deigns to connect with it. I have never manually put Firefox into offline mode.

You can try to create a new Boolean pref with the name network.manage-offline-status and set the value to false.
You can right-click on the about:config page to open the right-click context menu and use "New > Boolean" to create a new Boolean pref.
    Name: network.manage-offline-status<br />
    Value: false<br />

  • Cooling Fan ran full speed for no reason

iMac G5 17in 1 meg ram less than year old. Was sitting there in sleep mode and fan started running full speed for no reason. Computer screen black and would not wake up with keystroke. Shut down computer via rear panel switch and restart, all fine now. Do not understand why this happened but suspect it is actually a software problem, see below. Anyone have an idea so can understand what happened?
My iMac has the combo drive, not superdrive. I use an external 8x DVD burner for backups and iMovie. Yesterday I burned a iMovie (short) just fine. Then decided to back up my some of my Movie files along with iPhoto and iTunes media files. I tried three times but the burner did not work as usual. The first copy failed to verify and when I put it in the iMac slot, dumb I know, it did not show on the desktop. I restarted the computer to eject the disk, worked ok. The second copy did not work either, but did not put it in the iMac. The third copy burned but took a few hours to get 39% verified. I tried to stop the process with force quit, but it would not quit. Finally shut down the iMac via rear panel power button as a last resort as nothing on the desktop would respond to a mouse click. Computer restarted ok and worked fine for several hours until it went to sleep as I did last night.
I know using the power button is a last resort and possibly there is a keystroke that can force a proper shutdown. Also suspect the DVD external drive is balmy now, BenQ. But was amazed that the iMac still seemingly had some bug up its operating system this morning causing it to freeze and the fan to run full speed.
Again, any ideas...now be nice....I have tender ears
btw have three year warranty and just love the Mac, am going to sell my Dell laptop and get a PowerBook real soon.

Well the problem is fixed. I did call Apple Support and they ran me through the hardware utility. The problem I reported was that the system took forever to startup and that once the fan ran at full speed for no reason. I was not aware of the slow boot when I wrote this question so did not refer to it. But, after the DVD debacle my iMac would hang on the black screen just after the chime for about a minute or longer. The system worked fine once booted. This long boot came from both restart and a cold start. Think it happened once when I was trying to wake it from sleep yesterday, that is when I shut off the 'puter with the poer button. Anyway, the disk utility showed no problems
The Apple Careperson was very nice and stayed with me until the issue was resolved. It turnes out that unplugging my USB hub cured the slow bootup problem, and probably the fan.
So I am guessing that something in the external DVD hardware went and damaged the USB hub. It would be too odd for two devices to fail, on their own, at the same time.
The good news is that I just found a nice LaCie external DVD with firewire 400 support, so guess what I am buying.
As for the USB hub, well without the external DVD I don't need it right now so will wait to replace it.
Thanks for your help and I hope this may help someone else down the line.

  • Ix4-300 fan keeps running full blast and the NAS never comes online

When I turn on the ix4-300 after a couple of seconds its fan starts running full blast but the NAS never comes online.  The NAS lcd was damaged in the move so I don't know what is going on, it was working fine for a couple of weeks (with the damaged lcd) but this started happening a few days ago.  Things that I've tried:
Used the other ix4-300 (I've 2) with the faulty NAS... same result
Let the NAS run with full FANS for 4 plus hours ......, Still didn't come online
Also both the blue and white light are constant .... no blinking whatsoever.
    Any ideas ...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It could be the device itself. Is it covered by the warranty?
Are you concerned about retrieving the data or do you just want the device back up and running properly?
If you are not concerned about data, you can try the following procedure at your own risk:
Power down the device and reseat all the drives in the device. Power the device back on.
If this doesn’t allow unit to boot, continue with below process.
       1. Turn off the device and pull out all the drives.
       2. Place any other drive 2, 3 or 4 in the first slot and boot up the device.
       3. Wait for sometime as the boot-up process can be slow.
             a. If it doesn’t boot, try another disk in slot 1.
       4. If it boots up correctly, insert another disk in slot 2.
            - Check UI for disk detection.
            a. If second disk is detected, turn it off, place disk 3 and 4 in unit and boot up.
            b. If it doesn’t boot-up correctly, remove 3 or 4 and retry. You may need to try to determine if 3 or 4 is bad in this case.
       5. Recreate the volume if it doesn’t start regenerating automatically

  • My iphone 4 went into recovery mode for some reason and it is unable to be restored. any ideas how to fix this?

my iphone went into recovery mode for some reason and is unable to be restored. it wont turn on and when plugged into a charger it shows a usb and itunes symbol. so i plugged it into my mac and connected to itunes then itunes said it has detected a phone in recovery mode and needs to be restored. so it goes through the restoration process for a couple minutes or so then stops and says itunes is unable to restore because an unknown error occurred (2001) or (2006) and other times i try it says its unable to restore because itunes cant detect the device... any ideas how to fix this?

Errors 2000-2009 (from Apple support): If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software.
2001: Use up to date software. Make sure your device is in DFU Mode: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
2006: Use a different USB cable. Possibly the one that came with your iPhone.

  • G500 fan running at full speed for no apparent reason

I have G500 that worked perfectly for a year now. My operating system is Windows 7 Professional. Yesterday the fan started working full speed while the laptop was idle, I wasn't using it and the software that was running in the background were the usual programs I have been running for the last year. First step was to check the temperature of course, which is normal. Then I checked if anything weird is running in the background and creating high cpu usage, but that was not the case either. What I noticed though was that fanspeed is not recognising the fans or counting their speed. Is it a problem on the hardware? It is really annoying. The speed also fluctuates very often, reminds me of how it should work while gaming and definately not when idle.
    Thanks

  • My macbook pro is lagging, freezing, and fan runs at full blast. How can I fix it?

When I start up my 2010 Macbook Pro now, the fan starts running as soon as the spinning gear appears below the apple logo, the boot up is insanely slow, the mouse doesn't track well with my trackpad movements, and trying to open programs often leads to a non-responsive program with the pinwheel of death spinning for minutes at a time.  I try to shut it down (takes approx. 20 min. now) and when the screen goes black, the fan continues full blast.  After that I can boot up the computer and it runs normally, but the whole process takes about 50 minutes longer than it should, especially with a relatively new SSD (~ 8 months old).  Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone know how to fix it?
It loads well enough in safe boot, and I've tried cutting out most of the apps that launch at startup with poor results.  I've also tried resetting the SMC with equally poor results.  I need help!

  • Power Mac Quad fans going into overdrive

    Hi,
I've been experiencing some strange issues with my Power Mac Quad G5 recently. The issue seems to coincide when I'm running either one of the three listed programs (FLV2 iTunes, Handbrake or Reel Bean) when they are compressing or converting files. On a couple of occasions when i've left the programs running over a period of time i've come back to find the fans in complete overdrive mode, the screen black and the computer completely unresponsive to any key commands. I have to hold the power button in for 5-6 seconds to shut it off. It re-starts normally and runs fine. Any help would be greatly received.
    Thanks

Hardware monitor is the application that will monitor temps & other stuff (CPU voltages, fan speeds) http://www.bresink.de/osx/HardwareMonitor.html. I used it on my dying G5, the data always ended abruptly when the crash happened.
I think your G5 is doing the same as many others, namely crashing while asleep, then the fans go up to 100% I'd strongly recommend you disable sleep and see if it happens again. My 3 year, 2 month old G5 became useless after one of these 'sleep crashes', I think it is possible for the hardware to become damaged during one of the events, or it is the reason for the 'sleep crash'.
There are lots of threads on 'fans on full blast', 'turbo fans', 'jet fans', 'sleep jet fans'… in the G5 forums, I haven't seen one that has an answer to solve it, but consider stop using sleep & keep an eye on the number of CPU's the G5 boots with, lots of G5's have lost CPU's and I suspect this is part of the issue.
