Fan got really noisy

My G4 has been always quite noisy since I got it like 5 years ago.A month ago I installed a second internal optical driver and also a USB 2.0 controller. The optical driver made a huge noise and shook the computer, so I took it out. The USB controller is working fine. The thing is, just after I did this installation, the computer´s fan got REALLY noisy. Much more than used to be. Since I work with audio, it does affect my work. I did try taking the USB controller out, but still noisy. When I turn on the computer, the fan is pretty quite, but after 1 or 2 minutes it starts to get noisier and noisier even though I am not using any software.
What could it cause that fan noise change?
Should I try replace the fan? witch model shoul I look for?
Thanks!
Damião.
PS:Sorry for English.

Hello Damião!
Could the dust make fan noisier
It can, but not always. If the fan has a thick but even coating of dirt, the extra weight can make the fan turn more slowly, and the noise is less than normal. On the other hand, an uneven coat of dirt could increase noise if it is enough to upset the balance of the fan.
If the fan is dirty, it is likely that other parts of the air passage system are also dirty. Reduced airflow means less effective cooling and the fans may run faster to overcome it.
Areas to check for blockage:
1) There is an air intake behind the four decorative ports on the lower front panel. If you place your hand palm-side up on the lower clear "handle" and curl your fingers, they will be in the intake. There is a perforated metal screen--make sure it is free of "dust bunnies."
2) there are two small but noisy fans in the front edge of the power supply. Clean them with a brush if needed but do not attempt to open the power supply unless you are a very experienced electronics tech.
3) The main fan--you've seen that this on is dirty. Check its grills for build-up also.
4) the back panel, especially internally where air is directed at it.
Computer position can also affect cooling. I attempt to leave at lease six inches (15cm) between the back of the case and any wall or upright desk unit to insure the exhaust air is properly dispersed. I also watch the clutter on my desk to keep any of it from getting behind the lower front handle where the primary air intake is located.
The USB card should not affect temperature and therefore fan noise unless the card required you to install software. In that case, the software running in teh background may be increasing the load on the processors. Most USB cards to not require software to work under Mac OSX.
PS: Sorry for English.
Your English is many times better than my Portuguese! You are doing very well.

  • Fan gets REALLY noisy!

I just installed 2 more GB of RAM in my computer and had to remove and then replace the fan in the process. Everything was running fine and last night it sounded like someone was vaccuming in the other room, and it turned out to be the computer! It sounded like the fan was running extra fast and it was very loud. I just turned the computer off. Does this mean I didn't install the fan correctly? Is there any other reason this might be happening?

When changing out hardware, you should always, with G5s, reset-nvram.
That way it is forced to load the hardware device list, which it otherwise doesn't usually do or not do a good job of.
Resetting PMU/SMU is also a good idea.

  • Radeon HD 5770 got too noisy

    Hi All,
I've been using ATI Radeon HD5770 from Apple on my Mac Pro 1.1 and It has been working great until yesterday.
Radeon HD 5770 fan got really loud because it spin very fast. It is lound from start up and stay loud entire time.I tried Command+Option+P+R but it didn't help. Except noise, it is working fine but it is unacceptably noisy. I checked temperature sensor values and everything looks fine.
Is anyone encounter similar problem? Let me know if you have any idea to fix this issue.
    Configuration:
    Mac Pro 1.1, 8GByte Memory - 8x1GByte
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
PCIe Cards:Radeon HD 5770, Areca RAID Card
    Display:Dell U2711
    Hiro.

It sounds like the bearing on the fan may have worn out. You can try adding some light oil, but the real solution would be to replace the fan.
NB: WD-40 is all solvent, and will all eventually evaporate, leaving no oil behind.

  • Satellite R630-155 - Fan is too noisy and SSD upgrade

I am the owner of a Toshiba Satellite R630-155 (Core i5-480). My problems are:
    1. The fan is too noisy and never stops. In normal operation (browsing and general office work) there is a constant high pitch noise that is audible three to four meters away in an office environment - in high load you just can't stand it!!! The fan never stops... even when you are doing nothing...
    2. Heat is a big problem. The bottom of the laptop is constantly overheating and i have to place it on my desk in a way that the bottom left corner is outside of the table so it can breath fresh air from below - if not, the temperature rises and the (loud) fan is unable to keep up. When i work with the laptop while sitting on a sofa, i have to place a thick book between the laptop and my legs. The book must be thick (more than an inch) with hard covers, otherwise the heat passes through the book!!!!
    3. Last (but not least, i just mention the biggest problems here) it's the problem with SSD installation. I bought a used Corsair F80 (80Gb SSD) from a friend, but i was unable to use it with the Toshiba - the BIOS was not detecting the disk. I tried installing all latest firmware updates for both laptop and SSD but i had no success. Then i gave the disk back and i bought a brand new Zalman 128Gb SSD (SSD0128N1 Sandforce) but i had exactly the same problem. I contacted my local Toshiba support and after a lot of conversation the only answer i got is that the laptop is not compatible with those SSD's and this is acceptable by Toshiba and not their problem. They told me that if i need an SSD upgrade i can only go for the Toshiba SSD that is installed on the portege series, which is sold by Toshiba for a ridiculously expensive price - about $500 for 128Gb. I contacted the European support center and i got the exact same reply. I searched on the Internet and i found someone else with the exact same problem with a Corsair 128Gb SSD - he found that the laptop detects the SSD after ten to twenty reboots. I tried that and it was true - after a lot of reboots the laptop detected the Zalman disk and i was able to install Windows 7 successfully, but the process is unacceptable. Also the disk is benchmarked by official sites at the speed of an OCZ Vertex 2 128Gb (and slightly better), but when i ran a benchmark in the Toshiba, the results I got were below half of the advertised speed. Same benchmark in another machine for the same disk, resulted in the advertised speeds.
Shame for Toshiba... nice design and portability but everything else is a big flaw. Their support in non existent and they do not value their customers. I feel they stole my money and I'll never buy a Toshiba laptop again.
Sorry for the big message, but I need I have to warn potential customers. Can someone help me with any of the above problems? Do you have the same problems too?
    To be continued...

    Hi buddy,
Regarding the fan and heat issue: Did you make BIOS update? Friend of me has Satellite R630 too and he told me that fan activity with new BIOS version 2.10 is reduced. Furthermore the notebook is cooler than before so I would recommend installing this update. You can download the BIOS update here:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers
But before you start the BIOS update you should consider the following tips:
    -Run update as Administrator only
-Unzip all files from zip archive before you start the update file
-Close all running programs and also the antivirus and firewall
-Make sure that battery is fully charged
Regarding the SSDs its always a little bit complicated installing 3rd party products and nobody can guarantee that such parts would work. You are always on safely side with original Toshiba spare parts.
Everything what you can do is installing the newest firmware for SSD and hope that it works but who knows maybe the BIOS update will also help you in this case ;)

  • 2010 Mac Pro fan gets really loud after 10.8.4 update

    Hey all,
I've been having some issues with my fan since upgrading to 10.8.4, it's been incredibly loud compared to what it use to be. I typically run very graphic intensive programs and heavy video use but even simple tasks like browsing the apple site with nothing else running the fan slowly ramps up it a distracting volume. You can even hear it in the next room.
I've reset the ram, done a clean instal, blasted out any possible dust, it's in a well ventilated area, even run system hardware tests Nd everything passes I really don't know what else to try? I've searched lots on the Internet and I can't seem to find a solution nor do some others. Some say it will be a fix in a later update? Is this a known issue that needs to be fixed? I miss the snow leopard days :(
    Everything was wonderful until 10.8.4...
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated I love my macs but can't work with really noisy machines.
    Thanks y'all!
    Machine specs -
    10.8.4 Mac OSX
    2x 2.66 6 core intel Xeon
    20Gb 1066mhz DDR3
    Nvidia quadro 4000
    4 hard drives
    1 super drive
    Running dual monitors
20" apple cinema and 23 LG

I know there aren't 'as many' but it is better now than it use to and you don't need $2000 Quadro 5000 or something, a $600 GTX 680 or somethjng from EVGA will do
Don't know what but MacRumors did a good job on one thread detailing possible GPU AMD FirePro possibilities. Yes it is huge change.
People have always said that about PCs. I have a few. Not for gaming but that is the only way if you want like a small percentage of users, to spend on GTX 690 x 3 for $$$ (big bucks just for gaming).
I can't recall a Mac Pro 5,1 2010 with 2.66GHz (sounds like a 2009) and 12-cores. 2,26 GHZ yes but that is just, does not make sense to give up MHz for more cores. The 12-core 3.34GHZ custom build, yes, but again that was never an Apple BTO choice either.
Apple has always disappointed geekheads you might say.

  • Imac shut off and the fan is really loud...

I have an iMac 27" i7, 16 gb ram. The screen randomly shut off and the fan became really loud. Tried turning it off and back on, but still did the same thing. Tried resetting the PRAM, heard the chimes, but then did the same thing. Is it overheated?

Check it. Install an app like iStat Pro to check the temperature, and post it here. There are different temperatures (CPU, hard drive, graphic...). If you want, just take a screenshot of the widget (holding Command, Shift and 4 keys, and selecting the widget) and upload it here, pressing the photo icon at the top of the reply box.
Apart, you should run an Apple Hardware Test extended test, to check if there's any problem with the iMac > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 If, after running it, it shows an error, copy it here, because the Mac has got a hardware issue

The batterys the ipods come with are very sensetive somtimes they dont react right to the first couple of charges. Try fully charging it and then leaving it on until its completely drained a few times. If that doesnt work it might be a lemon.

I have photos on this phone that we're not backed up to I cloud is there any way to retrieve my photos from this phone?

No. You probably should have backed it up while it was working during those 6 days...

  • The cooling fan is strangely noisy

Hi, I'm using dv6-6023tx laptop for 1 year. Its cooling fan was ok since when i purchased it, but it suddenly became so noisy with annoying spinning sounds from the last few days. I don't know why it happened. I didn't touch or change any hardware and software conditions, I was just using it as normal. I guess it happened because of dust or something like that but I'm not sure.
    What should I do?

first step is to clean it with a can of compressed air by blowing it out in reverse of flow direction. holding fan blade still with a metal pin or similar through grill vents is good idea.
After cleaning check fan is running & air flow seems good.
If fan noise still noisy is it due to worn bearing (more mechanical noise) or because fan running faster & longer due to notebook actually being hotter.
It is posible you have processes stressing the computer & it is actually running hot & the fan is just working hard.
Review all processes & CPU use & also monitor actual temps with software like HWinfo

  • Safari has got really slow..

    Hi
Over the past few weeks I've noticed Safari (2.0.4) has got really slow at both finding and loading web pages.
I know it's not my connection as when I open the same page in Flock or FF it's really fast.
I've emptied Safari's cache but it's made no difference.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Roger
Over the past few weeks I've noticed Safari (2.0.4) has got really slow at both finding and loading web pages.
I know it's not my connection as when I open the same page in Flock or FF it's really fast.
I've emptied Safari's cache but it's made no difference.
Here's a list of basics I recommend when Safari slows down:
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
     HD/Users/Home/Your_Name/Library/Safari/Icons
    * Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
    3. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Also the power to support the modem. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
For slow opening, I'd recommend checking your Font Book application for duplicate fonts (the ones with the little bullets next to them). If you find any, select them one at a time, go up to the Edit menu, and click on "Resolve Duplicates.
** I see that you are using a Powerbook. When you shut it down overnights than run MacJanitor. This a special script developed for Powerbook, iBook, Laptop etc ... users.
    MacJanitor
This are the easiest things to start with
