Fan Header Question

I have a quick question about the cpu & system fan headers on a K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo.
Does anyone happen to know what the max suggested amperage draw on these is?
I would like to use a thermaltake venus 12 HSF, but now that I have it in my hot little hands, I see that the fan on it draws .45 amps & and the power connector is a molex.
The molex is easy to change to a 3pin,  but I want to be sure the mobo & fan header can handle the load.
thanks

I would keep that puppy hooked up directly to the power supply. It is much better for board stability.

  • CPU Fan Header died .. Options ?

My CPU voltage header died , after of the instalation of one low RPM fan Papst 8312L .
( In 5 minutes time it died... I had never use the this voltage header , as i have one external voltage regulator circuit) .
But i tried for first time to operate the internal software controled fan speed future , and the voltage header died .
One litle tranzistor named as 2323 (placed next to the voltage header) looks to be the problem .
It haves 12 volt in the one contact , and 0.2 at the other two contacts , is there any information about it ?
I am electronics engineer , is there any alternative tranzistor that i can install ,so to bring in life the header again .
Now i use power from the PSU headers .

The transistor would be fed PWM from the Winbond 83627HF, so DC voltage would be low on some meters.  Have you tried a 'scope on it?
Here's a sample circuit from page 114 of the Winbond hardware guide:
I have no idea how MSI implemented the fan header, but the above diagram indicates that a 2N3906 PNP is used.
Hope you got SMD soldering tools!
    Good luck!

  • Bone head question:reformatting startup disk

I know it a bone head question but I need to reformate my current startup disk.
I have pleanty of space on other disks. do I just transfer all info to another disk and select that one as start up and then reformate and transfer back etc... or what?
    stupid forgetfull me...
    cheers&aloha

If you have a spare drive which doesn't currently have Mac OS X installed, use an application such as this one to clone your current drive to it, restart from the clone or another drive, and erase the startup disk.
If not or if you don't want to clone the whole drive, copy anything off of it you want, erase the current drive, and then copy your data back after setting it up again.

  • Max Amps for Mobo Fan Header?

What is the max amps a cpu/case fan can pull from a Motherboard fan connector? .5 amps? .8 amps? 1 amp? more? I have 5 fan connectors on my motherboard. Can they all pull 1 amp fans?
    MSI 890FXA-70
    Phenom II X6 1055t
    850watt Pro Corsair
    4 x 2GB 1600Mhz OCZ
    Dual HD5830 1GB
    50GB OCZ vertex 2
    3 x 320GB Samsung F4 RAID-0
    LG Blu-ray/DVD-RW

    tho not same mobo...
i did try one of my 120mm 3500 rpm 1.67amps Delta fans on my main cpu fan header...
works solid. no lack of power. worked great with speed fan for noise control.
however, currently in different layout and i got a fan controller anyways cuz i need it for my
    case fans.
also, at same time while using the 3500, was using 2x 3pins off the mobo at 0.16amps each
i'd say be safe and don't pull then more 1.0 amps as they all say... but
i saw at least one review on newegg where the guy uses it for his cpu fan main fan straight
off mobo 24/7 and im guessing he's not roasting - mine din't  and i did touch the connector after immediately after
shutdown to see if it would be overly hot to the touch...
and it was warm... but not toasty.
i wasn't going to try to run two of the 3500rpm deltas tho... i do have splitters, and is
still tempting to date, but burnt plastic smell kinda hard to remove from room for longer period of time. hah.
so... if you wanted strong push-pull directly on the mobo cpu fan connector, can use 2x 2500rpm deltas fans (only 0.8amps each which
totals slightly less than one 3500 rpm fan)
but then again... you gotta check it for temp to be sure no toast for your mobo.
Nothing wrong with quick test... shouldn't hurt nothing... just dont touch the mobo while it's on.
If you have IR thermometer gun... best use... wish i had got one on sale other day for 18 bux shipped!

  • MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Fan Header max Amp and total max amp

    Hey guys,
I just bought this board (not yet arrived) and i am 1 fan slot short on the motherboard so i will be using a Y splitter. I will also use slip streams 1900 rpm (0.53A max), which i won't be using on max rpm.
After ALOT of reading i found many different max Amp values for many different boards. I also downloaded the manual for this specific board but the max Amp or Wattage is not in there, so i hope one of you knows.
If you combine two slip streams 1900rpm on  max settings it will give 1.06A, and i was wondering if its safe to put this on one fan header (maybe the cpu fan header can handle more than the system fan headers). I have read that for some boards the max Amp per fan header is 1A which will be a little short for me and that the total Amp recommended for all fan headers combined is less than when you add them up yourself. My total Amp including the y splitter will be 3.18A
I hope i gave enough info for  you guys and if not feel free to ask for more.

1 amp comes to mind, but in all honesty, you might be better off running directly from the PSU power and/or using an aftermarket fan controller.
And is the 0.06 difference really going to have a negative effect on header / motherboard life time?

  • Need power spec for System Fan Header MSI K9N4 Ultra-F

I need the power spec for Fan Header MSI K9N4 Ultra-F motherboard
I want to use a Panoflow 2.13 Watt fan on the cpu heatsink. Will this
fan burn out the header? I don't have the board yet (it's in the mail - really)
so I can't use MSI Tech Support (I don't have the serial # yet).
    thanks

Forgot to add fan headers can take at least 6W/0.50A fans.

    Hello,
    I have a MSI P67A-GD53-B3 Motherboard LGA1155 Intel P67 ATX RAID.
My CPU heatsink (Corsair H50 - requires pump control and fan control headers) fan has a four pin header (incl control). I cannot find on the board this 4 pin header for the CPU heatsink fan. Am I missing something?

  • Z77 mpower cpu fan header "control" no longer working

CPU fan header now only works with 3 pin fans, 4 pin fans turn off when placed on header, do not turn on. I had been running a hub off of that port to a switch 8 port fan hub controlling all case fans and a pump. cable to header  only had sensor and control, power was through molex, pump which was master only had same.  I had hot swapping on, had added a HDD reported bad by raid in another tower in a hotswap drive tray (hot swap on in bios)  was going to check it out in seatools. tower crashed on add. rebooted, when running seatools noticed temps way out of line 70-90c normal temps even under load 60c or less. noticed tower was quite, noticed no fans turning.  booted to BIOS checked reported no RPM fans not spinning in health changed options, did not help thought hub may have died.  powered down unplugged and plugged pump into cpu header. power back up fans running, but still high temps cpu header shows 0 rpm. shut down move pump to sysfan 1, reboot powers up pump on temps good. pump running at 100%  speed had never seen it running like that on sysfan 1 even when told to. reboot try 4 pin fan in cpu tries to spin for jet a sec then nothing. reboot try 3 pin, fan powers up spins shows in pc health.  reset to default, tried 4 pin no good, switched to older bios, rebooted no good, reset cmos no good…. any ideas forum wizards? I would really like to regain control so i can throttle fans/pump.
note bad HDD was pulled before swapping headers….

    1) I find it strange it does not effect the other 4 pin headers do they just not use the control line despite it being there?
    2) i do find it odd that prior to this running the pump directly on sysfan2 i could never get it to go to 100% only 50%, since this happened it stays at 100% on sysfan2
    1) CPU_Fan has its own circuit.
    http://www.swiftech.com/8-WayPWMsplitter.aspx
We generally recommend to use the “CPU_Fan” connector of the motherboard, because most motherboard manufacturers usually allow a greater range of adjustments on this particular connector.
    2) probably the Voltage Contol is damaged too (if they get the max voltage (12V), they stay at 100%).

  • Cpu fan header

    Hi
I'm trying to find out the DC amperage rating for the cpu fan header on my mainboard, but MSI doesn't give any rating for the max allowable amperage.
I want to use it to power a Delta AFB-1212H-F00 120mm fan, which has a rating of 0.35A. Anyone have an idea if this would be safe to do?

During the hunt I found the biggest risk was that the "traces"/threading(?) wouldn't hold the power.
The biggest fan I've used on a MSI board is this one:
    http://www.gtek.se/index.php?mode=item&id=2173&session=d007fd9bce0345eedf6a24a8401c1819
On the same, I've also - simultaneously - with a splitter used two of these, each 0,3A:

  • XPower CPU Fan Header Current Specs?

With any bit of luck, I'll be putting together another system using the XPower X58 mobo.  One thing I'm curious about is the maximum current rating on the fan headers, specifically the CPU fan header.  The reason I ask is I've got a Thermalright Venomous X in the one XPower system with 2 120mm fans in a push/pull config with both getting power from the CPU fan header via a 4 pin Y connector (only one RPM sensor connected).  This system is working great and didn't even think about the current draw off the fans and what the CPU fan header maxes out at.  This upcoming system will have the same push/pull config so to give me some piece of mind, anybody know what the maximum current draw is on the CPU header on the XPower X58?
    Thanks!

Since this is a user to user forum (no paid or full time MSI employees here), it may be best to open a ticket with MSI Tech Support & ask the engineers direct. Doubt anybody here is going to have a clue as to the actual BB X fan header max current.
Added: Many of us use only the CPU 4 pin header, but for all the other fans, run off the PSU & use aftermarket fan controllers.

  • Fan header and fan control

i have the gaming 3 and i realized that the fan control wont let me go below 50% on case fans so i was wondering  if i can Y cable my cooler master jetflo 120mms as at 50% they run at 1400 rpm which isnt even 50%. but if plugged in a cpu header i can reduce it to 600 rpm. (can system fans get this support)
but ive heard these fans are very power hungry so i was wondering what the max a cpu fan header can support

It shouldn't be a problem to use 2 fans on a single header. I use such a splitter and never had issues. Once I had 2 Delta fans (can't remember models etc) but according to the spec, even single of these on a fan header was already out of fan header's specification (Amps)  But nothing broke, though I suggest to not use such powerful ones
    Now the % stuff:
CPUFan headers can go down to 25% (or even 12.5%) IF the fans connected to such headers are 4 pinned (PWM). If they're 3 pin and connected to CPUFan header, they will run 100% without possibility to control it.
SystemFan headers are between 50% and 100% no matter if you use 3 or 4 pin fans. Though 3 pinned can be controlled compared to CPUFan header.

  • Z87-g43 fan header problem

Hi everybody first post here so to get straight i have a small problem with sys3 fan header it seems that pwm function isnt working the fan is spining but i cant adjust speed in hardware control
it can be 50 or 100% its gonna spin at the max speed other 2 headers are working properly i also tried diffrent pwm fans on that header and i couldnt adjust speed for any of them
cpu headers are also working properly anybody have idea?

I have the same problem with my Z97-G45 MB, SYSFAN1 and SYSFAN2 works without problem but SYSFAN3 the speed(rpm) goes crazy. SYSFAN3 Speeds from 700rpm to 56000rpm according to HWMonitor, probably not the true speed as i think its not possible with anything above the fans specified 1000rpm, in my case I originally had 2x140mm fans and recently i bought another one just like the ones i have from start. I have tested the different sysfans in different slots and aslong as i only have two sysfans connected in the same time theres no problem but when connecting a third fan problems show up. All sysfans i have tested works fine aslong as only 2 fans are connected.
I think the MB is having problem to handle more than 2 sysfans at the same time
In this video ive made HWMonitor shows Auxfanin0/Sysfan1 and Auxfanin1/Sysfan2 works fine but Auxfanin2/Sysfan3 shows strange RPM speeds.

  • Can't find fan header - G62 b29SA

My friend owns an HP G62 laptop. He said that the fan stopped working and I couldn't hear or feel it so I got a new fan and we opened the laptop up. It turned out that the fan I'd bought was not compatible. Later, I tested the fan using a 3 V supply and it worked just fine. I went to plug the fan in and I can't find the header! Could it have been knocked off the motherboard? I don't see it and I don't know how to proceed.

  • Cooling Fan issue/Questions

Hello there I will try and explain this whole story as best as I can. First off, I know my way around computers, I am going to school for them. Asking for help is a last stretch for me... but I need to learn when to ask for help inorder to learn from my mistakes. This laptop is a HP Pavillion DV7. List of replacement parts for this laptop can be found here.I have done as much research as I can on the issue.  So let me explain my situation. As a gamer, I know I stress out my laptop a lot. at 2.2ghz, it doesnt do much, but its 8mb L3 cache allows me to play quite a lot, not to mention what I gather from sources, my processor itself determines it should turboboost itself to 3.1ghz when it is under a heavy load. ( If this information is not true, then I will have to look into those sources again ) I have to admit, I do leave my computer on. I administrate gameservers and Teamspeak servers quite often, and gain access to the computers using the internet from my house to help fix the problems. I know I am not suppose to, but I leave it on so that I have the convience of looking into issues first hand and help the community owners as quickly as possible. I feel this is why I am having the issue I am. On Monday morning, a regular morning to wake up, first thing I do is check computer for any messages. The top left hand side of the computer is hot. Normal, since this is where the processor is in the laptop. The bottom part however never truely is. It got slightly warm, enough for me to take a notice. I turned computer off to let it rest so no problems had occured. a nice 30-45 minute rest. Laptop became room tempature at touch so I proceeded to turn it on. Upon doing so, I got a message  The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.Continued operation is not recommended and may cause unpredictable behavior that could result in random shutdown, data loss or possible system damage. The system will shut down in 15 seconds. To prevent shutdown and continue operation, press the Enter key now.System Fan (90b) I restarted computer, got same message. Proceeded to turn off laptop, then made sure AC power cord and adapter were working fine and plugged in. ( My Adapter block is normally hot, I think this is due to me leaving laptop plugged in all the time and never turning it off.) I restart once more, then head into BIOS. I check that the System Configurations are correct, Fan is automatically turned on, and I check BIOS logs for start up. All came up clear except the past 3 times. They stated part 090-B came up an error. This surely was the fan not being recognizes, as the start up told me. I go searching in the internet for replacement fan. This is the fan I have pruchased [ Replacement Fan ] and the thermal paste I purchased with it [ Thermal Paste ]. I rechecked with friends who work in computer stores for a living and they told me this was the correct part. So I decided I would wait. Today, I was told of an issue with the server, I log in to check the problem, get the error message for the fan. No biggie. I fix the issue within 5 minutes. My laptop was not on long enough to get hot. I get a message for an update today. I figured, sure; not a huge process needer, It will be fine. I let it update, and restart because I know it will need to finish applying them on restart. This time... the fan error did not display. I let the update patch in all 36,000 files. I restart after. I check the BIOS logs, It said no errors. I restart another 2 times to make sure I am not missing the message. There is none.  Whether or not my idea is wrong, I will still replace the cooling fan. My question is... Since the BIOS is responsible for how the computer starts, could the update possibly be the reason the error message no longer occurs? with 36,000 files patched, they could have easily been a driver fix and or a BIOS patch. They also could have been a simple security fix, but I have no way or knowing. I know it was 14 updates, and 36,000 files patched.  Could this at all have effected the error I was getting? Again, whether or not it could be the solution, I wil lstill replace the fan.  I ask for future reference of this knowledge. Could this be a simple mistake in the matter? Should I take into consideration of the update as a fix for the fan? Did it matter at all? EDIT  It seems though the error is gone, my processor still seems to be getting hot. This image shhows no sign of the fan working http://i.imgur.com/N1UgmHb.png

Still waiting for someone with more experience then me to explain to me the situation...
