Fan is always running loudly on Macbook Pro

I've had my Macbook Pro for just over three years now, and I haven't had a problem with the fan before now.  A month or so ago I started noticing the fan was always on a constant hum, not so much that it was a problem, but just present.  I figured I was just doing too much with it, even though I don't use much other than word, safari, and iTunes.  Over the last couple weeks, however, I've noticed the hum just getting louder constantly.  I've tried restarting the computer several times, and I can usually go about 10 minutes after that without the fan being loud, sometimes less if I try to play a video.
At this point there are times when it literally sounds like there's a motorcycle in my laptop, and I can feel a vibration when I type. However, I got a monitoring app and it says the temperature and fan speed are both at a normal temperature.  I'm not sure what this means for my laptop, and I really want to fix this problem.
Any thoughts?

First try a SMC reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If there is no change, open the MBP and look inside.  Your MBP may very well have dirt and debris that needs to be cleaned out.
If that is not the case, run an Apple Hardware Test:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
Note that an error free AHT is NOT definitive.
The last resort is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
Ciao.

  • Is it free to take my macbook air to an apple store to get a check because the fan is always running?

    is it free to take my macbook air to an apple store to get a check because the fan is always running?

    Yes, the diagnosis at the apple store is free, ....have them find out what is wrong for you
    However its totally normal for the fan to be always on, on your macbook Air.
    SMC (System Management Controller) could be causing the fan to misinterpret temp.  an SMC reset would likely fix this.
    If you can HEAR the fan all the time, it might be running noisy due to dust/junk in the fan blades and hub.
    If you have pets or a dusty room, fans trap dust and pet fluff like a magnet.  Might just need a cleaning.

  • Hi there, i bought my macbook 1 week ago and its working fine. BUT the fan is always running and it is very annoying? what should i do

    hi there, i bought my macbook 1 week ago and its working fine. BUT the fan is always running and it is very annoying? what should i do

    Take it back to the store where you bought it for a hardware check and/or exchange/refund.
    If they say "that's normal" then get your money back.
    Nothing worst than a annoying fan you can't do anything about.
    I has a eMac that did that, sounded like a vacuum cleaner running all the time, I'm so glad I trashed it and will never buy a machine I can hear running in a near silent library.
    Some advice, the higher end models with a dedicated graphics do tend to operate cooler, it's the one's with only CPU graphics (Intel) regardless if a Mac or PC that tend to make a lot of noise.
    Graphics should have never been put on the CPU, it just doubles the heat and doubles the fan noise.

  • East/West Gold - Can I run it on MacBook Pro w/ Logic Pro?

    I heard "somewhere" that East/West products have trouble running on a MacBook Pro w/ Logic Pro. Any feedback?
    I have also heard that if I buy East/West products I now have to buy a separate "player" (like Kontakt) in order to run them on a MacBook, although what I'm reading is that this is only true for previous versions, not new purchases. Anybody heard any of this?
    Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom!

    EWQLSO traditionally comes with the Kompakt player, which NI are not updating for MacIntel, so it won't run as is on a Macbook.
    However, you have two choices now. You can either buy Kontakt, which is available as a UB for MacIntel machines, and which should%% load the libraries, or EastWest have developed their own player software. Whether you get it free or have to pay the upgrade depends on when you purchased it - if you haven't bought yet, you'll (I think) get the new player for free.
    Do check when the player comes out though, I don't think it's ready yet, but could be mistaken.
    You can get details of this at www.soundsonline.com
    %%Note: Kontakt should load the libraries, but there has been a longstanding authorisation bug in Kontakt which sometimes prevents this. There are easy workarounds on the PC (registry editing) but none that I've seen on the Mac. Some people have had no problems, other people just cannot load encrypred libraries at all - so do check anddo some research before purchase.
    You can always post in the Soundsonline forum for more details.

    Java will no longer run on my MacBook pro since I updated my java - what the heck is with that? When I try to do as suggested and go under Java preferences it wont allow me make any changes this is the error message I get "Cannot launch "java preference" no compatible version of Java 1.5 + is available."
    Then it gives the option to open java preferences or quit. It will only allow me to quit as it won't open java preferences. Stupid updates!

  • PowerBook running warm/hot & fans almost always running

    Does anyone else have their fan(s) constantly running? I can be doing something as simple as checking my e-mail on a flat table like surface and before I know it both fans are running. Back a couple years ago Apple replaced my fan under the screen under AppleCare, now it is buzzing again and being out of AppleCare coverage I'm not rushing to have it replaced. Any ideas why my book's fans are always running? Anyone else have this?

    Hi, PBJohn. Assuming for the moment that your hardware is working properly and your fans are running to remedy an excessive heat buildup, plausible reasons for the heat might include:
    1. accumulated dust and crud inside the Powerbook, obstructing the fans and/or the cooling airways;
    2. multiple CPU-intensive processes running at once, including processes running in the background that you've forgotten or never known about;
    3. insufficient heat-transfer paste between the processor and the heat sink;
    4. lack of routine maintenance and periodic cache cleanup;
    5. an overly full hard drive;
    There are probably others I'm forgetting, but this list gives you some things to check.
    For 1, flip back the keyboard and blow the interior out with compressed air, then remove the bottom panel and do the same to the underside of things. Make sure the air intake and outlet vents are unobstructed.
    For 2, open Activity Monitor and see what's running. If you have Tiger installed, turn off Widgets — they're incredibly CPU-intensive. Drive indexing can also consume a lot of CPU cycles and produce constant hard drive activity.
    3 is quite unlikely, unless you've dismantled the Powerbook and separated the processor and heat sink yourself, wiping off the transfer paste and then forgetting to apply any when reassembling.
    For 4, run the background maintenance tasks manually and/or download Onyx and use it to run them and clean the various caches.
    Mac OS X: How to force background maintenance tasks (logs and temporary items)
    For 5, make sure your hard drive has at least 3GB and preferably at least 5GB of free space available at all times.
    If you check on all these things and still can't reduce the constant operation of your fans, you may have a hardware problem.

  • What is the best program to run on my MacBook Pro to clean it up?

    can anyone tell me what the best program to run on a MacBook Pro to clean it up, make it run faster?

    When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. • Battery is extremely hot and fan is always running

    Battery is extremely hot and fan is always running. Regardless if I am watching a video or writing a document

    SMC Reset, check the power and magsafe links
    Hold option and click on the battery icon to check the condition, may be going bad.
    Don't let it get too hot, it may go pop. It's been known to happen, but not so much on Mac's.

  • Loud fan and metal cracking noise on Macbook Pro 13''?

    I have the late 2011 model Macbook Pro 13''. The problem started out with just a loud fan, the computer started to operate really slowly and just yesterday I started to hear loud metal rattling on the inside. At first it was just when I turned the computer but now it will do it periodically while it's sitting completely still while running. It also is heating up a lot. I've already gone to Activity Monitor and killed all activities using too  much CPU and the fan doesn't stop.

    I have the same model and accidentally dropped mine off my bed today.
    I looked around for a while to see what the noise could have been and found this
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1935?viewlocale=en_US which seems to explain the problem, even if you haven't dropped yours. My fan has also been loud lately but it seems unrelated.
    I'd suggest you try turning off the SMS and then back on.
    I did that with mine and it hasn't made any more noise since. If that doesn't help, it's never a bad idea to go to the apple store to have it looked at. Especially for how expensive the computer is.

  • Fan problems, running asymmetric with macbook pro early 2011

    With Yosemite I have found that the fans are running asymmetric. With a any program running, the control of the fans run without any sense. I´ve tried to reset SMC, reinstall OS X 10.10, use some fan control software, uninstall all fan control software (FanControl 1.2, smcFancontrol, Macs fan control, etc), and nothing is working. When I install a fan control software, I can control left fan but not right one.
    I own a macbook pro early 2011
    Thank you for the help.

    You might consider that it's a hardware problem and not necessarily the OS.
    Perhaps malfunction of the fan with installation of Yosemite is mere coincidence, perhaps it went wrong with the increased speed/runtime one sometimes sees on a laptop during a big install.
    Could be worthwhile to have it looked at by the folks at the Apple store.
    The laptop is 3 years old, after all, and sometimes fans go bad.
    Good Luck!

  • My fan always runs on my macbook, any tips?

    Currently I have my macbook on a clean desk with good ventilation, but my fan always runs, even if there are no programs open. I've reset the SMC, and checked that theres no printing jobs in the printing queue but no luck. I've had this macbook for about a year and a half and have used it a ton since then. I dont want anything to burn out or break in my laptop. Any tips? thanks

    I have the same problem on my late 2008 Macbook white 2.1 GHz Intel duo, running 10.5.8. I had read in another post here that I should check Activity Monitor and I did so. The first time I tried, as soon as I launched AM the fan stopped. I then left AM open and the next time the fan started (I was online, doing nothing in particular - I did have 4 or 5 panels open though) I checked AM and the process that came at the top of the list with 90-odd CPU usage was kernel_task. I quit AM and then launched it again and the fan stopped, with kernel_task taking up about 2% of the CPU and Safari around 30%.
    What's going on? Hardware? Software?
