Fan is making grinding noises, had it checked out, but it's still as noisy as ever?

So my Macbook Pro (from late 2011) has been making very loud grinding noises coming from the left fan for about a month now. Sometimes it's more subtle, but usually it's very loud even when applications aren't even open. As soon as I start up my laptop, without fail, the grinding begins. It's at its worst when I'm watching Netflix, but it's always loud regardless to the point where it's hard to hear the audio from videos.
I finally took my laptop to the Genius Bar today and had a guy look at it. He said that the left fan was blocked and he cleaned it out for me. He handed me back my laptop and said the test he ran said it was good. So I thought, great! I didn't have to pay for a new fan!
Well I just got home, turned on my laptop, and the grinding is as noisy as ever. It's like nothing had been done at all. I really wish I had tested turning on my laptop in the store before I left, but I was so happy that it was just dust buildup that I left thinking everything would be fine
Do you guys think this is a sign that the fan has to be replaced? I'll probably end up going back to the store this week, but I'm hoping maybe there's something I can do (if at all possible--i'm not that good with hardware though) because replacing the fan will probably be expensive for me.

Hello rosetoots, Welcome to the forums
I saw your post about your Deskjet 3520 making noises when it feeds paper. I have a document that I would like you to see and follow the instructions for cleaning the rollers. I am hoping this will help the noise issue!
Solution three: Clean the paper feed rollers: An 'Out of Paper' Message Displays on the Control Pane...

My fan is making a noise - any ideas?

Does it sound as though it is just running faster than usual? You may be able to resolve that easily enough by restarting your MacBook Air.
If it persists then an SMC reset is indicated:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Sounds of mechanical interference or impending failure should only be fixed by Apple or an authorized service shop.

I called AppleCare this morning and Sean helped me out in a huge way. In all of my attempts, I had not done a factory-default reset on the main base station and apparently some sort of endless loop had occurred between those two stations. Sean was very helpful and patient with me, but now the system is working as promised. Moral of this story is if a factory default rest doesn't help on the "problem" base station, try resetting all of the units.

  • RSC says I have files checked out, but when I try to check them in it says they're not checked out

We are using RSC 3 to control RH7 projects. At the moment RSC says I have hundres of files checked out, but when I try to check them in it says they're not checked out. And then it says "No files were found to CheckIn." What could be causing this?
I tried refreshing and rebooting my (client) PC, and it didn't help.
    Thanks.

I am no pro at this product but when you look in source control, who does it say has those files checked out.  Does that user match the credentials that you use to connect to source control.  The only reason I ask this is, when I first set this up for my Publishers, I used the default admin account to connect to RSC.  Then I created accounts for them and went to their workstations to change credentials.  I changed the credentials but they had checked out some docs before that and could not check them back in because they were still checked out as admin. Had to change it back, have them check projects back in and then switch credentials.  Hope this helps.

Okay, you need to contact support definitely about what's going on. Here is a form that will send an e-mail into support for you:

As far as the prices, the difference is likely the laptop version is the SD version and the iPad one is available in HD. That's the only reason you'll see a price difference. It has nothing to do with the device with movies/movie rentals. Apps yes, these no.

    Hi,
You can go to the document library which host these pages, and click Library>Library settings>versioning settings. Here, set it to no for Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited.
    Then please test it again.

  • Visual Source Safe VI checked out but cannot edit

I am using LabView 7.1 and Visual Source Safe (VSS). Previously, I have created several VI's and used VSS to manage them without a problem. I received a VI (and sub VIs) from another company location -- I copied them into my local directory -- and copied them from there into VSS.
I then check out the files (using VSS or using LabView|Tools|SourceCodeControl ... I have tried both) but I am not allowed to edit the VI -- all I get is the "operate" cursor. VSS shows the VI as "checked out". My local directory shows that the VI file does not have the "R" attribute (read only) set. So I should be able to edit the VI, but I cannot. ????
If I try to use LabView|Tools|SourceCodeControl to check the file out again ... I get an error, stating that I already have the file checked out, and I cannot check it out again. LabView seems to "know" that I have the file checked out, so what might be preventing me from editing it? [I tried different settings in the tool palette, but regardless of what is set, I only see the "operate" cursor when I try to work on the VI.]
I am relatively new to LabView, and have only been using it with VSS for a couple of months now . . . . so it could easily be something simple that I am overlooking...

    Hi Rich,
I'm happy that your issue was solved.
Now, for the suggestion about placing the "Change to Edit/Run Mode" in the "Edit" menu - that DOES sound like an intuitive choice. However, I can also see the logic in having the menu item under the "Operate" menu - for choosing how to operate your front panel and block diagram.
I would recommend you (and anyone else with good ideas) to submit your Product Suggestions through the 'feedback' link on www.ni.com/contact. Our R&D team will then look into the possibilities of implementing the feature in future versions of LabVIEW.
    We appreciate your ideas, thanks.

  • PSS File Checks Out but Will not Check In

Everytime I check out a project from Version Control, then
check it all back in for another person to work on it, the PSS does
not check in unless I go into RoboSource Explorer 3 Manually and
UnCheck it. Is there a fix or something I am doing wrong
    here?

Hi Jeffrey. I think there may be a fundamental problem in how
you added your project to source control.
To quote MergeThis from another post: "Apparently, these
files should not be included in any source control solution: CPD,
    HHP, LDB, and PSS."
The recommended way to add a project to RoboSource Control is
to upload it directly from *RoboHelp,* not from RoboSource Control.
RoboHelp knows which files do and don't belong in RoboSource
Control. Adding projects to source control directly from RoboSource
is usually the cause of this error...and in fact there are a bunch
of other oddities that also crop up when you do this, too.
If you added your project to source control via RSC rather
than RH itself, I'd recommend starting over and uploading the
project from RH. Mind you, if you are dealing with a DB converted
from the previous RSC, then that might be a different story.
    Cheers,
    G

  • X300 - fan/hdd making weird noise

FYI notebook is <= 6 months old.
Couple of days ago, I had my x300 on for few days without any downtime, did system upgrade (kernel changes included [debian lenny]) in the meantime. Then out of nowhere, this very loud weird breaks out, few years ago I heard pretty much the same noise, I didn't shut down my notebook, and result was ... my hdd died.
So I shut down my x300, let it "relax" for few hours. Few hours later, noise is much softer and quiter, since I thought it could even be made to changes to kernel, I tried with few other distros, but nothing really changed it. Now I first thought it was my fan that was making this weird noise, but now I'm almost 100% positive it's my hdd. Since x300 would remain completely silent until I saw it booted my root partition and hdd started working, then I would hear the noise as well.
I keep shutting it down now, if it's not shut down it's on suspend or hibernate, I'm really scared to leave it up all night. I tried going through this forum, Google of course and etc ... but nothing really solved my problem. Right now noise is completely ... you can barely hear it, but let's say I have bat ears so I can hear it all the time.
It goes away, but then few minutes after computer has been on it comes back, since I gave it its time to "rest" it's been quite quiet, the reason I don't send it to Lenovo support is because of my recent incident: http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=X_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=6612
and I pretty much just got it from them, so if I really don't want to go through whole thing agian.
Any thoughts, ideas, please do let me know.

I recommend you try to remove the battery and boot it if the noise is still there or not.
SDD might not have any noise from my experiences.
You're so hard to vertiy where the noise comes from , because the material of x300 is so easily passing the sound everywhere.
Most common problems are came from the fan, the cpu (can not be solven), the battery(common issue)
BTW, the x300 is supposed to be loud....i own one, I have the same problem, just use tpfancontrol and kick the noise out

  • Cooling fan is making irritating noise

my cooling fan has resently been making alot of noise
i tried cleaning dust of it but then it wouldnt stop
i then found the fan was kinda loose and when pushed on the outside and moved, it would make the same noise rubbing against the bottom of the heatsink
is there a way to fix this

Well, since you didn't really give the actual model, I can only speculate that it's the wire interfering with the fan. The Ti XXXX 8x retail series have a TopTech Cooler and the housing that holds the fan has a metal clip that's supposed to keep the wire from touching the blades. It doesn't work that well and sometimes you have to fiddle with the wire to get it to clear the blades. It will often happen after handling or cleaning the assemby.
