Fan Issue? Can't tell if it is working?

I have a fan issue. While playing WoW I realized I started to get issues with my game and I would get a brief 1 to 2 second long lag every 5 seconds. Then I realized my computer was relatively hot, but I couldn't be sure as I've had this issue with WoW before and overheating was the problem as my fan turned out to be broken, so I may have just been being paranoid. However, I cannot tell if my fan is even running at the moment to know if it is working. Any help?

2000 RPM is the default speed for unibody MBP fans, which run all the time. When the fan(s) is/are working properly at that speed it's inaudible, except in a dead-silent room with one's head close to the machine. Even then, a slightly noisier than average hard drive will drown out the extremely soft whir of the fan(s).
13" MBPs have one fan; 15" and 17" machines have two, which normally operate at the same speeds.
Your fan or fans should speed up by the time the CPU temperature reaches about 180-185°F, if not a little before then. If the CPU temp reaches 190°F and stays there instead of cooling back down to below 180°F, you should suspect a cooling system problem. Before the CPU temp reaches 221°F, which should never happen, the machine will shut down or sleep for its own protection.
Expect fan speeds to hold at about 2000RPM at least until the CPU temp reaches 170°F. That's perfectly normal and no cause for concern.

Macbook Pro issues - can anyone tell if 'normal' or faults

I have some issues with my new 15" 2.66 unibody (non-removable batery) MBP. I'm told by the retailer that they are all normal/common - i'd like see if this is actually the case or they fobbing me off.
1.) Something 'lose' inside the case around hard drive area - ie if i move the mac around (vertically is worst - ie imagine holding it with two hands with hinge sitting downwards, closed) i can hear something fairly hefty clunking back and forth against the inside of the shell (hard drive moving about?)
2.) When i opn the lid for the first time after a period of the mac being closed, i get a reasonable creak/crack from the left side of the screen hinge.
3.) When i run the battery down and it goes to sleep 'to preserve the contents of memory' it doesn't take long at all before battery so low it goes into deep sleep (ie state where all RAM contents are written to disk - and then takes a min or so to come to life again when you open the lid - my old macbook pro could last a good few hours in sleep mode before dying completely and deep sleeping
I'd really like to know if anyone has noticed similar issues with their machines - or if indeed these are isolated issues to a few, aka faults.

The sudden motion sensor may make the appearance of something bouncing in there as it may activate while the drive is being moved around suddenly. However, if this does not appear to be the case, I'd ask an authorized service center.

Is the opening range different from other ones in the store?

If it is calibrated, and you aren't getting the life expected by that link for rudimentary usage, have the power manager looked at.

It just has her bummed out, which now has me bummed out, so in looking for an solution that is not buying more product (since they now have decided to release new product every 6 months that are hardly different from their old ones).

Metadata - Issue Can You Customize Apertures Metadata to work with Bridge

I am a photographer and my workflow is to import all my images into Aperture library and add metadata. When exporting image is it possible to integrate the data with Bridge? This is important feature as most people do not import images with Aperture. The issue is that many of the field names are different or non existent between the two programs. For example Location in Bridge is Sub location in Aperture. Can you add contact info such as URL, email that are included within Bridge?
Is there a way to customize the metadata fields to work with CS3?
Any advise is greatly appreciated

I think that the DAQmx Perform Bridge Offset Nulling Calibration should work for the SCC-SG24 module. Take a look at this article: Removing Large Initial Offset for Load Cell or Strain Measurements with SCXI-1520 or PXI-4220 in particular it mentions that using this VI in addition to the auto zero can introduce an offset. If you're doing both these is likely the cause.
Also, when you specify specific channels using the channels input are you also setting the "skip unsupported channels to false? If not this may be why it affects other channels.

If you are using the standard XML Get Tag Value activity, you can specify the tag set in XPath notation. For details about this notation, see the W3C Recommendation "XML Path Language (XPath)". Note that this standard activity looks for the CLOB within an event message structure. See:

Old programmes and Lion. How can I tell what won't work anymore?

Hi.
I am thinking of upgrading to Lion, but I am aware that older programmes will not work. This is only to be expected, as I am a firm believer that backwards compatibility should not be too backwards.
However, is there any way to determine which programmes I currently have will not work with Lion before upgrading? Or do I have to upgrade and then find out th hard way?
Do Universal Binary programmes work, or will they be affected?
This would be helpful to know as it is not as easy to know as when Apple dropped Classic support.

Please try removing the newly added fonts and see which one causes the problem. One of the newly added fonts might be corrupt that Ai is not able to read properly. Removing these should help unless there are any other things impacting the launch.

I got into a similar situation last night trying to enable wireless on my already configured wired my Time Capsule. It was getting the same or very similar 169.xxx IP address for itself.
I found that I had to change ( I suspect it was restore my previous setting ) the Configure IPv4 item under the Internet Tab in manual setup of the Airport Utility.
It appeared a "manually" and I changed it (back?) to "Using DHCP".
That combined with Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode) lets the upstream router that connects directly to my Cable modem be the DHCP server for the entire network.
As everything had worked fine for weeks until I enabled wireless it seems that the Configure Ipv4 parameter was reset either by me mistakenly or by the updating o f the changed settings. Frankly I' quite sure I didn't change it accidentally (famous last words)
Other combinations may aslo work, but this works for me.

Basically, do not buy a Harddrive Camera or a DVD Camera.
Get a Dv Tape camera (I am partial to Sony) and be certain that it has a firewire port (the only way to import video directly to your Mac. if you get a Sony, they call that port an iLink.
Be sure to pick up a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire as no camera that I know of comes with anything but a USB cable.

I just bought a new Airport Extr N which replaced an older G version, I have a new macbook that is N capable too. Nice hah, well how do you tell if the N is working at the max speed? I did install the new Airport Util for the new AE N - what setting and where can you tell if it is working faster then it did at G ? Maybe seems a bit faster, not sure? What is Multicase rate ? currently set to 2 Mbps in wireless options in AE Util ? I do have older G and B Macs on the network. Thanks for your time!

In case anyone wonders, my issues are similar to most others...BOTH my wifes 2.16 Core Duo and my new 2.33 C2Duo are experiencing the same issues. While at school, she cannot see any of the numerous nearby networks. I JUST got her to switch to a mac, and now this. Her old HP laptop saw about 6 or more wifi's nearby before, and most importantly her schools wifi connection. But now that she is on the mac, nothing. SOMETIMES, and I do mean only rarely a few networks will surface, but then disappear again. I decided to take my 2.33 C2Duo down there and see if the situation was the same with me...it was/is. Every now and then I might see a network or two, but not the shcools.
This in addition to dropping off my own home wifi over and over again also. I will get a connection and surf away, and then I notice that the airport icon has lost connection. I click the icon and there is my network, avail as ever, so I select it and surf again...same issue with her laptop and my step-fathers 17 inch Core Duo. We all experience the same dropped airport connection. And I can tell you it has nothing to do with idle time or sleeping. I can be surfing along and sometimes if I pause for less than a minute, the connection is lost. Btw, I also just got my step-father to switch, and while in general he is VERY happy, this is a knock-out blow to the saying "It just works." Uhm, nope it doesn't.
I have tried nearly every "trick" and tech troubleshooting idea I have come across here on the boards...I used to be a Mac tech in CA for about 5 years, working for ABC and Disney, so I think I can count myself amongst the more knowledgable Mac users out there.
So, to sum up again, can anyone tell me if they are having these issues with a version previous to 10.4.8?
p.s. BTW, I just saw the release of some EFI updates for the Mac line-up...I will update my wifes machine and let you know if anything gets better, but my 2.33 says that this update is not for this machine/isn't needed...so this EFI update doesn't resolve anything for me.

I had issues in 10.4.7 as well as 10.4.8.
My problems occurred at the beginning of 10.4.8, then many users brought light to me using WEP, which was not working that great. I changed my connections to WPA2 and my problem has disappeared. If my problem didn't resolve the way it did, I would have mentioned it the next time I visited an apple store.
The bottom line is that assumptions, complaining, and self diagnostics don't get many people very far and bringing the problem to apple helps them know the incidence of this problem, and helps them develop a reliable solution.
Though some users have reported the "cold shoulder" when reporting Airport problems to apple... I hope you weren't one of them.
