Fan loud and hot

My Mac pro started running loud and hot after upgrading to osx 10.8.4 and moving to icloud. Tried suggestions posted w/no luck. Pls help as no longer want to use it!

Open Activity Monitor, select All Processes instead of My Processes, then order the processes by CPU. Post an image of what processes are using the most CPU and how much. Also, do an SMC reset.

  • Loud and Hot

I bought my G4 MDD recently of Ebay and it is deffinetly the version nicknamed 'Windtunnel'. Its very loud, and hits high temps of 122°F. I know apple released a power/fan replacment kit shortly after the MDD release in 2003. But it is unavailable now from what I understand. Any suggestions for fan replacments/new heatsinks.
P.S. Can someone tell me the pros/cons of useing a copper heatsink to replace the stock aluminum one?

122 degrees F is not that hot for internal temps for CPU or inside your MDD. temps of around 140 degrees are common even. as long as you have an effective cooling system your computer should run fine.
well Copper heatsinks definately cool better. I bought a copper heatsink online and replaced it with the old aluminum one and notice approx 10 degrress cooler temps than previous. Copper handles heat better and cunducts electrical current better, hence the reason its used so much in A/C cooling, plumbing and wiring.

  • When I play minecraft my computer gets loud and hot.

When I play minecraft on my macbook pro, my computer's fan turns on which is very loud, and also my computer gets hot.  Normally this wouldn't be a problem but I make Minecraft Youtube videos and it sounds bad in the video.

Sometimes this happens when the computer has to do a lot of work.... What I mean by that is if you have other applications open or applications that are running it has to work minecraft which you are in and the other apps that are running.... To prevent this from happening is when you are playing Minecraft only have like 1 or 2 apps open in the background at a time and none running then the fans don't have to kick in and make the computer get hot. This has happened to me and I did exactly this and it stopped after the first try of doing it.
    Hope this helps,

  • Late 2011 17' MBP suddenly got very loud and hot

    http://i.imgur.com/tZ1QZJM.png?1
Was using handbrake when suddenly the fans got loud and stayed like this for several minutes before I decided to cancel my DVD rip.
Looking at iStat the Fans were at 5,500 RPM & CPU at 185.
How bad was this? On occasion this happens but never for more than a few seconds.
    Any suggestions?
Also I just upgraded to Mountain Lion last week, if that matters.

    i'm afraid it didn't work....
it's like brightness control got stuck on lowest. If I shine a light on the sensor left of the iSight, the keyboard lights turns off, so the sensor works and shouldn't be the source of the problem.

  • 21" Imac Fan Loud and Random

    Hi there,
After trawling these forums and others, my problem has driven me to the point where I thought id post my own thread on here.
I have had my 21" Imac for about 5 or 6 months. Up until about a month ago it has worked perfectly, until one day, whilst Idle, a fan inside kicked in randomly. Ill detail the circumstances and information here:
Fan, which is blowing air out of the top slit on the left hand side of the imac has tendancy to turn on randomly
When this happens it is VERY loud (for a computer fan)
When this happens it continues until I put the imac to sleep, or shutdown/restart, which buys me a bit of time
I have checked temprature readings and highest at these times have been about 60-70 deg celcius at the GPU, nothing ever higher than that
Ambient temp never been more than about 25/26.
This happens whether idle, or if im using a relatively heavy application all the same. Most of the time when it kicks in ive checked the CPU usage, which has been very low (10% or so) with just a few chrome tabs open.
I have tried reseting the SMC/SMU many times (switching off, unplug for over 15 secs, switch on) (and method where you hold power button for 5 secs before you plug it back in) The fact that this has not worked is very frustrating as most of the other problems on the forums seem to be resolved by this.
I have reset the PRAM twice.
I ran the imac hardware diagnostics (hold D at startup) last night, one quick test and one extended test, showed no problems.
The funny thing is that i experienced the same problem during the test. I am sure it was not part of the test as it continued well after the duration of it.
This problem has really started to get on my nerves now, as the Imac is a core part of Sound engineering and music production related work and study - as you can imagine the noise is a real bane of this.
Any help will be greatly appreciated guys, cheers.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Vance
I feel your pain mate. However, having said that, here is the situation since my last post-
The problem persisted all the way up to early september when i left home for uni.
Since, it hasnt reoccured once. There are two reasons I can think of for this:
    A) packaging up the imac and moving it a few hundred miles in the car may have knocked something (e.g. A loose sensor connection) back into place. I can imagine that this would therefore mean the problem may appear in the future, when relocated again.
    B) i have a basement room at uni which provides a very stable, relatively cold temptature (thank god with no damp, an ideal hideout) at home the room used to get ALOT hotter (thick carpet, and more heat from larger studio monitors/subwoofer etc) worth saying though this would still happen when cold at home. Maybe it is environment related?
Maybe also worth mentioning my old laptop always used to completely crash out on the basis of the graphics card overheating whilst at home, but ever few weeks where i would live elsewhere for a while it would always be fine. Very odd.
Thats probably the most i can suggest, and do let me know if you find a solution or supernatural fix to this problem. This drove me bloody nuts for ages and no forum threads on the net directly tackled this particular circumstance as far as i am aware.
Im sure anybody else in our boots would much appreciate seeing this thread rather than be corroded by the problem for so long whilst taking thier kit to the apple store isnt convenient.

  • Fan loud and laptop hop

MacPro running hot and noisy since upgrading to osx 10.8. Funambol-sync using 42% cpu. Annoying - pls help

Right-click the installer and choose "Open" from there, and then confirm you want to continue installing. Alternatively, go to the Security system preferences and temporarily set the option to "Allow apps downloaded from" to the "Anywhere" setting. This should allow the program to run.

  • X300: Annoying fan (loud and almost constanly running)

    Hello,
after having my X300 for about 3 weeks now there are a few things that I'm not very happy with. The most annoying part in this laptop is definitly the fan!
After poweron it takes only a few minutes till the fan is spinning at Level 1 (2000 RPM - that's ok, because it's almost impossible to hear).
But after some more minutes (of almost no load) the fan goes to level 2 (about 5000 RPM).
As a result, temperatures fall but the fan doesn't go off. If I produce some more heat (OpenGL Game) the fan will even speed up more
(level 5, ~ 5700 RPM) but it won't go down later.
Here's a little gnuplot of all I said:
     http://0je.de/pub/temp/x300_fan_01.png
    Some information about my system:
     Linux 2.6.25
     ThinkPad BIOS 7TET25WW (1.02 ), EC 7THT15WW-1.00c
And some more: Why are there no fan speeds between level 1 and 2? Theres a difference of about 3000 RPM there ... (impossible to hear vs.
    quite annoying).

I complained about the noise and the missing control of fan speed using the Lenovo-Support-Form. After some days I got a flat answer telling me that software-support is only available till 30 days after purchase.

  • My mac is really loud and hot

I have a 13 inch Macbook pro. It is running slowly, not holding a charge, taking a long time to charge, staying very hot, and constantly sounds like an airplane attempting to take off.
This has happened once before, and the tech in the Apple Store went into my settings and did something along the lines of clearing out my usage history. It was as if the computer was still trying to run programs even after I had closed them.
Any ideas? I'm getting into finals and can't afford computer problems!

update: I found my Activity Monitor window, and this is the resulting data:
Even with every program closed, it still exhibits the same symptoms. Thoughts?

  • White Macbook (mid 2006) Runs loud and very hot,  battery not charging

I know my Macbook is getting a bit old now, but I don't think the way it is running is very normal.
The battery will say that it is fully charged, but it will only last about half an hour when disconnected from the charger. The light on the charger will not come on either, or it will blink when i attach it, then stay out.
My Macbook will also run very loudly, and hot. I don't ever run too many programs at once, so I know that it's not a strain on the system from what I can tell.
I tried resetting the SMC since it sounded like the problems I am having would be solved by resetting it.
Are there any known problems such as these, or fixes? Thanks.

  • I-Pod Hard drive loud and doesn't work

I've had my ipod for about a year now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. However, last week it decided to stop working all together. When I turn it on the apple symbol comes up and the hard drive gets real loud and hot, nothing else. After a few minutes it either shuts off or runs till the battery dies. Finally, when I connect it to my PC nothing happens. It's not even recognized as being there. The only thing I can do is reset it, even after talking to tech support and trying to run through the diagnostic buttons, nothing happens. I can't seem to find any of this in the forums.

I have exactly the same problem since 2 days: My iPod 4G (40 GB) died. More specificly, the harddrive is out of order. I formated it, updated via the iPod update application, but it still has severe problems and they become worse. For example, I can hear the iPod trying to start several times until it is up and running (sometimes it never makes it). Or, when I copy songs on it it suddenly freezes. Or, when I try to play a song, it is not able to open it. As I said, it's dead or at least dying.
It is out of warrenty, however, I got this iPod as a replacement for a previous one during it's warrenty in summer 2005. I guess it only can be solved with a new harddrive (or a new iPod ).
Any experience with Apple's policy in such cases? The harddrive should not be dead after a few months.
Is there a (free) diagnostic tool available to find the exact reason?

  • Why are my fans so loud and my macbook pro so hot?

I have a 15" MacBook Pro.  I've had it since a little bit before Christmas and the fan has always been so loud and the laptop itself, as well as the charger, tend to get VERY hot VERY quickly.  I'm keeping it elevated so it's not being suffocated but it doesn't seem to help.  I've already checked Activity Monitor and nothing is running up my CPU very much and I'm out of options.  Any help is appreciated!! It's driving me crazy!!

Those are very, very high temperatures and very high fan speeds just trying to cool things down.
Now - which applications or processes are turning up the heat? Open Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) and select "All Processes" and sort by CPU %:
Then post your screenshot (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4391) using the little camera icon in the composition bar at the top of your reply.

  • Satellite A300D - Fan running very loud and notebook is getting very hot

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction as what to do with the overheating problem i currently have with my A300D. I have had the laptop for under a year so it is still under warrenty but i am not sure where to go or what to do in order to repair it.
The problem: Around two months ago I noticed the fan running very loud and also the laptop becoming very hot. Now it runs so hot the laptop switches itself off completly. The heat being fanned out of the laptop is so hot! burns your my infact.
Has any one any advice they could offer me.
    Thanks
    James

    Hi James
You wrote that you have the notebook under a year so my questions is did you already clean it?
The notebook should be cleaned every 3-4 months and I do this every 3 months. Every time I do it Im wondering how much dust comes out and after this procedure the notebook is a lot of cooler.
Here is an interesting Toshiba article about this:

Compressed air spray is really useful and you should check it yourself!!! ;)

  • My MacBook Pro (Early 2011) keeps freezing, the fan becomes extremely loud and the laptop gets very hot, what can I do?

    Hi there,
I would be grateful if any one could help me. I purchased my MacBook Pro  13 Inch in August 2011, it was the "Early 2011" version, which was shipped with Lion (I have now upgraded it to Mountain Lion last year).
Up until a few weeks ago, it was running fine. But recently my MacBook keeps freezing (A circular rainbow appears on the cursor), slowing down, the fan gets very loud and I often have to restart the whole machine. This usually happens when I'm running programs such as Safari, Preview or Microsoft Word
I only use my MacBook for university work so I only have Microsoft Office and iWork installed, nothing else. I've only used 19gb out of the 320gb available. I've also reseted my MacBook to its factory settings but that hasn't fixed the problem.
I've checked my AppleCare status and it says:
    Repairs and Service Coverage: Active
Your product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under a custom agreement.
For more information about your coverage, please contact us.
Estimated Expiration Date: 24 August 2014
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to how I can resolve these problems, as it is stopping me from doing my work?
    Many thanks.

Call Apple and make a appointment, backup your use data off the machine to a external drive.
Don't bother with TimeMachine if it asks, too long and likley be corrupted and unable to restore, just drag and drop your Users folder to the external drive.

  • Loud fan/whirring and heated MacBook Pro

    Hi,
My MacBook is continuously loud and it seems to be the fan - does this mean it could be near death? I have to admit it sounds like a PC and I can't do my work in peace.
Also, the unit gets extremely hot above the keyboard and below the screen.
Anybody know the problem before I have to scrap the love of my life???
    Thanks.

Exactly how much CPU is Firefox using? If that is causing the problem then I'd suggest using Safari or another browser.
I think it is wise to upgrade your RAM to 4GB particularly if Activity Monitor indicates you have low free memory. With 4 GB your machine should have a nice performance increase so I'd recommend doing that soon.
You never stated how what you are doing when the fans begin getting loud, if you have a lot of processes open and are operating with only 2 GB of RAM you are taxing your machine.
I'm sure there is nothing wrong with your CPU.
BTW do you turn off your machine when not being used, if you do that isn't recommended. I'd recommend following Apples instructions in the owners manual.
