Fan makes noise, even after erase-install?

I have an iMac running tiger 4.5. The other day, I had kind of a bluescreen-scenario while to find a USB memory-plug on the desktop. The macine wouldn´t restart properly, not even in Safe Mode. While trying this, the fan started roaring, and never stopped.
I started the iMac up as a firewire-item, which allowed me to make a backup of important files. Then i booted from install disks, running disk repair on Disk Utility until it said no repairs necessary. That didn´t help my startup issue, and the fans were still going. Tried archive install, didn´t help either. Finally, did erase install. The iMac then started up with a "brand new" desktop - but the fans are still noisy like an airplane from the second I push the startbutton.
Called Apple Support, they suggested the running fan was a hardware thing, but I find that hard to believe, as the fan-problem occured while I was solving what I found to be a software issue. Any suggestions on this one, or should I bring the machine to professionals right away?

Have you tried running hardware test?
(Install DVD/CD...hold option key as mac restarts)
...Just to rule out the possibility that there may have been an underlying harware issue that caused you sofware challenges.

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • Can't open itunes,even after un-installing and then re-installing!

I keep getting the following error message when trying to open itunes on my pc.
'The folder "itunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "my music" folder.'
This error message appeared even after un-installing and re-installing itunes.
I conducted a search for the 'my music' folder, and it came up with nothing.
    Please help!

If you truly don't have a folder named C/......./My Music, there are bigger problems with that PC.
That folder is a default windows XP folder and should be there.
The file extensions setting is easy to change. Win Explorer > Tools > Folder options
    http://www.fileinfo.com/help/windows-show-extensions.html
If your music folder really doesn't exist, see if you can do the shift-start and CREATE a new library. It will be blank, but at least that will tell us if itunes can even start. It will NOT run without an ITL library file.

  • My backup hard drive does not have enough space for time machine to perform a back up even after erasing entire contents of bu hard drive

My backup hard drive does not have enough space for time machine to perform a back up even after erasing entire contents of bu hard drive.  The hard drive has been in service for almost two years performing this function with no sign of failure.  How do I adjust time machine perameters?

The only way to limit the size of the backup is to exclude data from the backup, which you can do in Time Machine preferences.
If you use multiple browsers, have you tried clearing your browser caches? However, that's just a stop gap if it works. You either need to limit what you backup or get another drive.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

  • Missing HD Space even after Erase and Install

Ok, so I own a 2.4GHz MBP, 200GB HD 7,200RPM, 4GB of memory... Penryn model that my brother purchased for the each of us back in about August of last year (2008). So recently my brother upgraded to the Unibody and gave me his MBP so that I can give it to my wife. So now, I have 2 of the same exact MBP's.
So the problem that I'm having is that when I did a Erase and Install on the MBP that was given to me, it didn't have the same amount of HD space as the one I originally had. I only know this, because I recently did an Erase and Install on my original MBP and because I wanted a fresh MBP. When I did the Erase and Install on my original MBP, I noticed that it had about 174GB of HD space left.
Now with the MBP that I just received, I did the same exact Erase and Install to my new MBP and it only has 171.71GB of HD space.
Also, I notice after doing the Erase and Install again on the new MBP. I noticed that when I did the Customize portion it stated that I am going to be need 9.2GB of available space and that I have 185GB of available space. So after I did the Erase and Install, shouldn't it have about 174GB of space like my original MBP. And that's why I know my new MBP is missing HD space.
So my question is that, why am I missing HD space on my new MBP after Erase and Install and what can I do to get it right. Why wouldn't have the two computers have the same specs after Erase and Install has been done exactly the same way? (The only reason I did the Erase and Install on the new MBP is so that I can configure it for my wife with her login and info.)
Sorry for the long read... but here are the cliff notes.
    1. I have 2 MBP that are exactly the same.
    2. I did an Erase and Install on both MBP.
    3. After Erase and Install, one of them has about 3GB less HD space.
If anyone can help me, please let me know. I will post replies here as well.
Otherwise, I will be taking it back to Apple since it's still under warranty.
    Thanks

But my problem is right after the same exact Erase and Install on both, they have different free space.
How could you possibly know this without using the drives? IOW, how & when are you checking the drives' capacity & the used & available space of each?
Again, I've noticed that the HD space specifies that it has 185.99GB of available space after the OS, but once you add certain things, it specifies that it will be using 9.2GB of the available 185.99GB.
What do you mean by "185.99GB of available space after the OS"? What are the "certain things" & what is the "it" that specifies 9.2GB will be used?
If you really mean each drive is showing a *total capacity* of 185.99 GB (before or after installing anything), this is right for a "200 GB" drive. That is because the drive capacity specification is given in decimal based gigabytes but the computer reports capacity in binary based ones. (See paragraph 3 in my post at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9389432&#9389432 or search this forum for the word "gibibyte" for more about that.) This number should not change when something is installed -- it is the total capacity of the drive.
If the "certain thing" that says 9.2 GB (or whatever) is the installer application, be advised that it is telling you +the free space needed for the installation+, which is not that same thing as +the space used by the installed files+ once the process is complete. This is because the installer requires temporary file space to assemble the files it will install, hold the results of pre- & post- installation checks, & so on. This temporary space is eventually freed up once the files are in place. In part because of this, the reported space needed is only an estimate, & is always more than the space used by the installed files. (IOW, if it says 9.2 GB are needed for the installation, you should always see less than this used by the sum of all the files installed.)
Thus, as I have already explained as best as I know how, you need to look not just at the free space of each drive but at the total capacity, the number of files & folders used on each volume, & the partition map if you want to make a meaningful comparison of the two drives. I have already explained how to do this using Disk Utility. If you are not willing to do that but instead rely on what appear to be flawed inferences from other things, I can't help you any more than I already have.

  • Mail & Safari crash repeatedly even after erase 10.6.7

I came back to the Mac to get away from Windows issues but still need to run Windows. So running Windows 7 64 bit in bootcamp & using that as a Virtual Machine in Parallels 5. Bought the macBookPro 13 in April 2010. Was running fine until Feb 19, 2011. On that day, Pages crashed, going from Pages to desktop to blue screen. Over a week it & Safari got worse with repeated crashes so that it got so I wasn't even able to boot.
AppleCare & Genius bar have tried various solutions leading up to & including 2 erases--the 2nd time not even restoring much at all.
Did not even have mail set up until after the erases. All I have on the Mac side since the erases is iLife & iWork & then later reinstalled Parallels. But the crashes happened before installing Parallels. Safari & Pages crashed before erases. Since it has been Safari, mail & finder & possibly Pages & Numbers-can't remember.
Even after the erase these have continued intermittently. Have been working in Bootcamp lately since I have Outlook there & did taxes in Turbotax Windows. It has been pretty stable.
The mac has also had trouble booting & had finder crashes so it seems to be mostly the various mac apps, but not just 1 of them. Right now Safari seems to be working ok & hopefully will let me post this. But other times it crashes & then it may work fine for several hours.
Anything known that happened around Feb 19 that could lead to this?
When did 10.6.7 come out?  There were some reports on the Parallels forums of possible conflicts between that & Parallels, although I think that was parallels 6 & I'm running Parallels 5.
Most of the crash reports seem to say BAD_ACCESS_SIGEV (or something like that)
& the thread is 0. This seems to be true whether Safari or Mail. Can't remember if Pages or Numbers have crashed but I haven't used them much.
I'm told Macs don't get viruses or malware, but then someone said maybe they do.
So far no reason has been found for this but the next step Genius bar is going to do is replace logic board, memory & HD. But hardware tests hadn't shown anything.
So just wondering if there might be any other possible explanations that maybe should be explored. Genius bar is taking good care of me, but this is really disrupting use of Mac & really blindsided me since my memories of Macs (& what my brother confirmed has been true with their macs) is they just work.
So before I take it in for what is hoped will fix it, but really apparently that is not known, wondering if there might be something else to look at.
Also wondering if anything on Windows side could affect the mac? I have proprietary co software in bootcamp as well as Outlook 2007 that I sync to winmob phone for biz.
But the crashes started up again after the erase before installing parallels. Bootcamp has mostly been stable although I did have 2 windows blue screens shortly after the erase.
Again, any help or suggestions would be appreciated to help get this back to what I expect from a Mac. Its also embarrassing in an office of Windows users to be having all these problems on my Mac.

  • OS won't load after Erase & Install

my computer decided to take a crap the other day, and after trying to restart a few times, only to have it just stop on a blue screen, i decided to re-insall the OS. I tried doing an archive and install first, but both times i got a message saying that there was an error and i shouldl try again. I then decided to do an erase and install, and it gets through the installation process with disc 1, but without asking for disc 2, it restarts, only to stop on the gray apple screen for about 10 minutes, at which point it restarts again and gets stuck in this loop. If i catch it at a restart point, i can boot from the disc again, but then i'm back at the install screen. Trying to quit the installer and change the boot disk to the internal drive ends up back in that loop, so there's obvioulsy an issue with the installation not being completed correctly.
This is the second time i've tried the Erase & Install with no success and the same result. Any thoughts? Perhaps it would work if i installed it on another drive? i have one coming in a few says...
    thanks

What computer model are you installing on? Are you trying to install Tiger or Leopard? Have you tried re-prepping the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.)Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • AMD GPU fan runs constantly even after disabling DGPU

    I have a HP-Pavilion dv6 6121TX, with AMD 6770m gpu.
The fan of the gpu runs constantly even after disabling it using the following command
    echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
the output for "cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch" is as follows
    0:DIS: :Off:0000:01:00.0
    1:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
It shows that the DGPU is off and yet the fan for the same runs continuously at full speed.
Would be really grateful for any suggestions.
    Thank you.

You might also try a different battery if you have access to one. Unfortunately, many of the replacement batteries being shipped by Apple are defective. They don't fit properly into the battery bay. I suspect that if the quality control is this poor, then it seems likely that other problems will arrise as well. Check carefully that the battery itself is not overheating. Another possibility which also happened to me is that after installing the last upgrade to the operating system, one or more of the third party widgets became problematic, causing the same problem you describe. After removing all third party widgets, the problem stopped. Good Luck

  • IPhoto & iTunes libraries on USB flash drive. What happens after erase/install?

Not exactly sure how much background someone like Kappy needs for this question but I'll try to not make it a novel.
My late 2010 MBA (64GB) was way low on storage so I decided to get a 64GB USB drive for it and put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on it. Moving both libraries went exactly according to the instructions. But then after a while iPhoto started to get very slow. The spinning beach ball was running amok. This prompted me to use DU on the new flash drive which didn't show any problems. After doing that I decided to run DU on my mac HD and found a problem that coudn't be repaired without erasing and re-installing Mavericks 10.9.2..
Now, here is my current situation:  I have erased and as I write this am downloading a clean copy of Mavericks from recovery. I had backed up everything to my TC just yesterday.
    Here is my question:
After re-installing what do I do about telling iTunes and iPhoto where to find the libraries? Or, should I just use the copy of everything that I had backed up yesterday?
Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. I checked to see if there was some support file for my issue but couldn't find anything that really fit.
As always, thanks for everyone's input. I always learn something from you guys.
    Regards, Richard
P.S.: I realize that the problem with iPhoto might not have been the issue with my mac HD and doing what I've done may not fix it. But I wanted to fix the problem with the HD before I went any further trying to fix iPhoto. I hadn't had issues with iTunes functioning with the flash drive, only iPhoto.

Yes, there's no real solution.  Apple makes thin, small computers and devices, but of course that means no big drive to store all the bulky media Apple itself promotes on the iTunes Store.  You then have to buy external storage which is almost as big as the device you are using, negating the whole concept of a mobile device.  I guess you can try wireless, though I can tell you I see about 30+ wireless devices in my neighborhood and with them trying to share only 3 non-overlapping channels I frequently see network slowdown through interference.  Of course you bought that nice light computer so you could take it away form home too, but then you are locked into using what's available on the Internet. I guess part of Apple's answer is cloud storage and redownloading.  However, Apple itself says you need to maintain your own independent archive: "You always back up your iTunes library in the event that a purchased item is no longer available on the iTunes Store," (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519), and, Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability by country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085 ); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).   Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.
Cloud storage is a convenience but not a replacement for a hard drive at home (and of course, works best when you buy everything from the iTunes Store).

  • Fan makes noises

when I bought my my macbook air I have never experienced this problem before but after couple of months then I started noticing this problem.
when I am working on my macbook air sometimes it is all quiete, however, unexpectedly there is a weird fan noise even for 20 to 30 minutes , and I do not know whether it's normal or not.

normal, when you doing some light CPU load works, the fan isn't work, so no noise from mac.but if you doing some heavy CPU load works the CPU temp becomes high, so the fan is working , you can hear some noise
