Fan noise after upgrade ram and OS

hello there
i have a problem with the fan noise. it's extremely high. i'm running a MacBook Pro 15" and i had OS Tiger. i bought an iphone4S so i upgraded the OS to snow leopard. all running fine!
then two weeks ago i decided to upgrade ram to have a more perfect machine, and i upgraded from 2GB (1+1) to 4 (2+2). the brand is kingston
after that there is a persistent fan noise. it went worse when i went to my windows partition. then it sounded like an helicopter... i updated all software, bootcamp drivers and everything and i don't know what this noise can be... any help?

I did exactly the same as you. The ram I installed is Integral IN2T2GAXNEX2, 2x2 Mbs.
Unlike the original ram which has manufacturer's & serial numbers (as seen in system profiler) this new ram does not.
Manufacturer:          0x0000
Part Number:          0x000000463732353642363145363830304600
Serial Number:          0x00000000
The fans now run at nearly 2000 rpm all the time, from boot, although the temperature is only 19ºc.
Has anyone added actual Apple Ram and found the same problem? (some sites claim this Integral ram to be identical to Apple Ram).
Another site suggested non apple ram may lack a temperature control chip thus inducing the fans to run just in case.

  • X 200 fan noise after upgrading to windows 7 32 bit

last month iv'e upgraded from win vista 32 bit to win 7 32 bit, ever since (that day exactly!)  i did that i'm facing a lot more fan noise then before the upgrade, noise that bothers me.
it seems like the fan is starting to work more often then before, and besides that it never goes into idle but continue to work all the, regardless of the load on the computer.
until now iv'e tried to update anything possible (including bios) , i have reinstalled the win 7 with a clean install (the first time i used the update option) and again updated everything possible, that didn't solve the problem.
iv'e also tried to change the power manger options regarding the fan and cooling policy. the only thing that made any change is the "reduce noise dynamically" but that option also changes the overall performence of my system,so that's not a solution for me.
iv'e also read in a couple of places that turning down the wifi or access connection helped someone, but not for...
any ideas what to do next?

i've got the same problem. upgraded from a silent windows xp to windows 7, and there's the noise.
have you found any solution to tune it down?
    thanks and best regards,

  • Weird pop sound after upgrading ram and harddrive

I randomly got the pop sound after I upgraded my mac mini core 2 duo to 320 gb 5400 rpm harddrive and 4 GB ram (2GBx2GB).
The sound is like a plastic click (similar sound when I the wireless mice hit the aluminum wireless keyboard) and it's quite loud.
Everything works fine except the pop sound ,Im a bit worried.
First I thought it was the hard drive problem so I copied the 3 GB music from the CD to the newly 320 GB internal HD with no problem at all ,no pop sound or click sound.
Do you have any idea where the sound come from?
    Please help

I will try to swap the 80Gb back .
If the clicking sound disappear then it's the HD.
No, that's not the best way to test it. Leaving the new drive in the system, try and copy a large file to or from it. What that will do is keep the drive busy for the duration of the file copy, and let you listen for the noise. If the noise continues while the copy is taking place, and particularly if it increases in frequency, it would suggest a problem with the drive that is not a simple matter of self-parking - in other words, would be suggestive of a faulty drive that you would likely be best not to trust at all (in fact return it).
If the sound disappears while the copy takes place, then it suggests the noise is the self-parking activity, in which case as much as the noise is odd and even disturbing, it wouldn't suggest a fault or any real indication of imminent failure.
It should be said that many drives used in early minis made the most alarming sounds, yet are still in regular use with no unusual failure rate. Indeed, one of the manufacturers concerned (Seagate) indicated at one point that over time the sounds would change and grow less prolific, which in my experienced turned out to be the case. In your situation therefore, I'd continue to use the drive, ensuring I had an adequate backup routine of course, and see what happens!

  • Fan noise after upgrading to leopard

Does the machine run slow? It could be a stray process. I had a problem with a printer driver that was using 100% cpu when not in use, but worked perfectly with Tiger (10.4).

  • Upgrading ram and harddrive before turning on macbook for the first time?

Hello, I'm totally new to the world of Macs. I am for sure going to purchase a Macbook, but I feel it might be better to upgrade ram and harddrive through third party. I have never upgraded ram or a harddrive, but it seems easy enough after watching the video at macworld and reading instructions. My question is:
Should I install the ram and harddrive before I turn on the macbook for the first time? Would this make things any easier? Would this be a bad thing to do?
I plan on ordering both the macbook and the ram and harddrive on the same day. Which is basically why I was wondering.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to the discussions!
I agree fully with Ned. You will want to power it up and run the setup and even do your data transfer and maybe even install a program or two before doing any upgrades at all.
    Why?
Updating the OS tests your Airport or ethernet connection.
Migrating data over by FireWire or USB tests those connections.
Installing programs from CD will test out the CD drive.
You will also get a feel for the baseline performance and have something to compare it to once you do those upgrades.

    Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.
    I thought about RAM:

Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:

    I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it.

Cannot locate wireless Airport hubs in Airfoil after upgrading modem and router?  Just replaced modem and router-Airport is working for internet connection, but I cannot locate the two additional sites in my home to feed music to.  Each is connected with a Apple wireless hub.  Thanks

To work in this configuration, you just need to setup the AX as a bridge.
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, make these settings:
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    - Apply the new setting.

i am guessing both will be compatible with my laptop but the main problem is ram and it's frequency i can't seems to find a way.
    Please help.

    Hi,
Your machine currently has 4Gb of RAM:
        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03325481
It supports 8Gb max. CPU-Z (SPD tab) should show you RAM information including brand. You can work out what do you need using that information. My suggestion: use information on the SPD tab INCLUDING brand.
    Regards.

  • Fan Noise After RAM Upgrade to 4GB

I have just upgraded the RAM on my Power Mac G5 to 4 GB and it is suddenly running very noisy with the fan perpetually running. This started the moment I restarted after installing the RAM.
The extra 2 GB of RAM which caused this was a Kingston 1 GB DIMM 184-pin DDR PC3200 DDR400 card. The specifications can be found here:
    http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KVR400X64C3A_1G.pdf
Can anyone suggest what the trouble is? Is it a problem with the manufacturing specs of the card?
    Many thanks in advance.

One other thing, is if the air deflector is removed and replaced while powered on, the fans will run fast and not slow as they should. If this applies, see this document.
Also check that your System Preferences for Processor Performance are not set to "highest", as this will cause the fans to run fast.
And, one last thing (in my bag of tricks) to try is a SMU reset or PMU reset depending on your G5 model.

  • Fan noise after memory Upgrade

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini and I upgraded it to 2GB of memory and now I got a fan noise constanlty going. I have tried to reset the SMC and I left the machine without any cables plugged in for about 45 minutes after my second attempt.
I had upgraded the machine before and this never happened.
Any clue as what I got to do or what may be wrong?
    Thank you for any help!

Mac Mini 1.66 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

To quote from a post by "damfair":
There is a fan speed regulation wire at the front of the Mini that needs to be unattached to get to the RAM slots - if this is left unattached, the fan continually runs at full speed. Could this be the source of the constant fan noise?

  • HP xw8600 workstation fans run at max all the time after upgrading CPUs and memory

Hello, This is my 1st post on the forums here so I would like to thank everyone for the help ahead of time. I have an HP xw8600 workstation on which I have upgraded the CPUs and RAM recently - after the upgrade the fans seem to spin at full speed all the time (not just under load). Before the upgrading the fans were barely heard but afterwords the workstation has become very loud. This seems odd that the fans always run fast now and seems like this is not "normal" - what needs to be done to allow the fans to again be modulated by load/temp settings as designed? I looked in the temp and fan RPM settings in the BIOS and it looks like all sensors are working (including ambient temp sensor - was stating around 20 deg. C). Hardware changes:Before - CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5460/ 3.16 GHz, 12MB L2, 1333 MHz, FSB,120WRAM: HP 32GB (16x2GB) DDR2-667 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser After -CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5492/ 3.40 GHz, 12MB L2, 1600 MHz, FSB,150WRAM: HP 32GB (8x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser NOTE: From the HP spec sheet it says that 32GB(8x4GB) is not supported by 5492... I am not sure why this is so and do not know if this has anything to do with my fans running very fast. HP 32GB(8x4GB)DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM RISER Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 HP 64GB (16x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 and 5492.
Acoustics waiver required. Other than the constantly loud fans the workstation works perfectly with the new setup. Please let me know if anyone has run into this issue with the fast fans and whether there is a fix for this (maybe flashing BIOS?). Any advice is greatly appreciated! [I originally posted this under Desktops section - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/HP-xw8600-workstation-fans-run-at-max-all-the-time-after/td-p/3929746]

The xw8600 has a motherboard firmware setting that if it detects high powered processors in place it wants to see the "double tall" performance heatsink/double fans per heatsink in place.  I have posted about that and how I rewired a double tall to use side by side in my xw8400 next to a single tall heatsink/fan to see how cooling was affected in that workstation. The xw8400 did not ever come with double tall performance heatsinks, to my knowledge, so its motherboard's firmware is different. In those posts I also explained how to do a simple jumper wire modification on a single tall heatsink to spoof the xw8600 into thinking it had a double tall/two fans in place over each processor.  Simple and quick. So, you might want to get a couple of double talls off eBay, or try the jumper wire trick.  I'd personally advise to get the double tall heatsinks given that you're running 150W max TDP processors.  If I remember correctly HP wanted you to use the double talls for 120W max TDP and above.  I'd feel comfortable using that trick on a set of 120 watt processors if I was not hammering them frequently, but it sounds like you're a high level power user. The all-fans-on-high can be due to a failed thermisitor in the front power cable reading ambient air temps too high, but you can check that in BIOS to see the temp and it sounds like yours is not elevated incorrectly.  You can search for my experience with that in a xw6600, and it is an easy $8.00-$12.00 fix with a new cable off eBay.  You'd want the longer version for the xw8600, versus the shorter one for the xw6600. Finally, maybe you've just gone too high in your total wattage use?  Those risers can run hot and draw lots of power.  Could you live with less ram and get rid of the risers using 4GB sticks?  Sometimes those prior prohibitions regarding what is and is not supported go away with later BIOS updates.  Is your BIOS the latest? Welcome, and let us know what turns out to be the problem so others can benefit too. Scott

  • FAN noise after BIOS upgrade (HP i7 DV8 1050ep)

    HP DV8 1050ep i7 18,4
Due to  Startup Error - System Temperature (90D) bug related to ubuntu 9.10 instalation,I upgraded my BIOS firmware to F.12 (released 2009-12-08),  that BUG was corrected but now the FAN is ALWAYS ON, making to much noise.
    - Disabling the "FAN always on" option on the BIOS setup doesn´t make any difference.
    - The BIOS update utility doesn´t allow me to downgrade back to the previous BIOS version.
So I am stuck with this horrible noise under windows 7 and under ubuntu... Any Ideas to solve this issue?

I had the same problem, I updated the BIOS to F.12 from HP's driver page for the DV8T and after restarting the fan was on full blast and actions were taking forever. I rebooted and went into the BIOS and changed the setting for "fan always on." This appeared to fix the problem but now however it appears as if the fan won't run at all. I have the "fan always on" setting enabled and have tried reflashing F.12 again but no change. I have also "reset to defaults" in the Bios and no change. After installing temp monitoring software I was alarmed to see my processor pushing 60 deg Celsius. Do I have some setting messed up or is there a problem with the update? Others have simply reflashed, reset to defaults and have been fine but I am not so lucky.

  • Fan noise after HD Upgrade

    Hello:
I have a 12" 1 Ghz G4 Powerbok in which I have repalced a failing HDD, one 60 Gbyte drive for another. Once I've put it back together again I have a steady fan noise. Always on - from power-up, before the chime, to shutdown, except when sleeping.
I have no spare parts left over after re-assembly and I was not required to force or stress any parts in the process of putting it back together.
    Any Ideas ?
    Thanx
    GM

I was able to return both my hard drives to the store....no problems.
Interesting what they told you about the Scorpio. I can only tell you that I've had no problems at all since I changed.
The vibration and humming sound were very annoying....I can certainly relate to your dilemma.
    Good luck!

  • T540p-Fan Behavior after upgrading to Windows 8.1 pro

Hi, i recently upgraded my T540p with an samsung evo 500gb ssd and installed windows 8 pro. I then upgraded to Windows 8.1 pro. My system runs smoothly and i am fairly happy with it. The only thing i have notised is that the fan kicks in every now and then. I have observed that the fan kicks in when the temp of the cpu reaches around 50 degrees celcious. This is a new laptop so the air vents are clean, and i am always using it on a desk. The fan produces a quite audible noise level and i guess it is spinning at higher revs when this happens. When the temp drops below 50 degrees i cant  hear it at all. Has anyone else observed similar behaviour on their laptops?

Thank you too :-) I think we are not the only people who have this problem. Some other Germans have told about this problem too (http://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/172112-T540P-L%C3%BCfter).
Meanwihle, I have tested for this issue on Windows 7 x64. It’s the same behaviour. Same lower RPM after-sleep-bug (1600 RPM instead of 2000 RPM, Fan does not turn off any more).
I have taken the measurements from TPFanControl (http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/donate.html) and my ears ofc. Just used it with BIOS Fan Control (no custom fan control).
    Please Lenovo, help!
Edit: Now tested at Ubuntu 14.10 Linux – same issue. Seems to be system independent. Must be a controller issue :-(
