Fan Noise back again with 3.1.6-1-ARCH

Hi,
I opened this ticket (before) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=132077 to solve this issue, and now with the new kernel the temperature is back again
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +52.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +51.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +52.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
and of course the fan noise is unbearable again..
ERR: nothing changes with the fallback ,was a wrong impression
Please help, or I should never upgrade to other kernels?

  • Ok back again with 55 error code endless on and off loop

So a few days ago i decided to clean up the computer. Removed/reinstalled/cleaned video card, 2 fans attached to a tall finned CPU cooler (to clean out the cooler fins) with q-tip and compressed air can, and remove filters and some fans to clean. All done with comp air cans and q tips. Had my anti static wristband attached and on a clean table with tile floors. Had to remove 2 sticks of RAM to get one of the fans.
Also decided to add an ssd while i was at it. All went well except i couldn't get into the bios. Booted to windows fine but hung just after del key press just b4 bios setup. Posted in the Bios section for help and I was told to disconnect all hdd's and optical drive and try again. That worked. Reconnected optical...didnt work. Tried just HDD and it worked. Re connected the optical and it worked. Used the same ports as original (when this all started) and it worked. Weird but good to go. Connected SSD, configured windows to "see" the drive, all is good. Then I disconnected the computer, cleaned up a little of the wiring after the new ssd install (nothing was removed or reconnected) and one fan. Put the covers back on reconnected cables and went to bed.
The next day I go to turn on the computer and i get the dreaded 55 error code and have an endless 3-5 second loop of on and off before it even gets to the splash screen. TV shows nothing. Tried CMOS clear every which way. nothing. Disconnected all components except for 1 ram, and CPU....still nothing. Tried several sticks of ram in each. Nothing works. Tried different PSU's...same thing. Disconnected all USB cables, Mouse, and case switches, same thing. Bench tested mobo with different power supply same problem. Tried different power cords still no worky.
I dont know what to do. The mobo is still under warranty. Idk what I did to make it do this. Static, short while reconnecting audio out to a home amplifier. Static while cleaning up wiring? tried bios a and b, neither work.
Please help...I'm about to just go buy a new board and send this one back and have a spare.

When I had the original problem, (not getting into the Bios but booted to OS fine) at the end of disconnecting and reconnecting, I had the HDD and Optical and new SSD connected like original and it worked when it didn't before being connected the same way. Just chalked it up to maybe not connecting something completely.
Now I'm starting to think the problems are related
So it worked BEFORE this latest problem. All I did then was add some zip ties to the new SSD cabling and put the panels back on. Didn't check to see if it worked after that, just assumed it did since I didn't do anything of significance.
Then this. I did think about the can of comp air and yes it can do that. I thought I was being careful enough to not let it do that with just short bursts.
I have not tried to remove and re-seat the CPU yet. I will try later and inspect the pins. At this point I think it can be attributed to one of the following things:
    1. The EVO Hyper 212 did kind of twist a little (it always has a little when pressure is applied) and bent a socket pin. When I put the panels back on I did have to clean up one of the push/pull fan wires and did twist the EVO a little.
    2. Something shorted/is shorting the board to do with the SATA connections. Maybe the SATA plug to board connection.
    3. Compressed air shot out some frozen water and corroded some connection somewhere over night.
    4. When plugging in the audio OUT from the back of the board to an amp Stereo L & R IN (converts to Surround Sound), the Amp was on and this jolted the board.
    5. The compu-gods have decided to brick my mobo so as to have an excuse to buy a new one.
3 things I have learned. 1. Get a water cooler and not use the big tower coolers. 2. Don't use compressed air especially in swamp-ass Florida. 3. Make sure the crap you plug into the computer is OFF.

  • Back again with problems

Back in Feb I posted about having the "blue screen of death" and after many attempted solutions I had to resort to full reinstall. Ibook G3 running Jaguar 10.2 had been working great since and a few weeks ago I got the gray screen with pinwheel. I was able to do a disk repair but some programs didn't work. I then did an archive and install but still having problems with a few programs. I am trying to update to 10.2.8 but it won't work. Any suggestions?

DiskWarrior would be my suggestion. I recently was able to help my sister-in-law upgrade from 10.2.8 to Tiger after running DiskWarrior.
Hopefully it will be able to help you as well.

  • Back again with the frustrating email issue

After having my BB reset again today by my it guys I brought it home to install a few programs  (BES mailbox, and a couple of games).  When I plugged the unit into my computer after starting dm (version 4.2) I was encouraged because it didnt do any of the sync things that it had done in the past.  I installed the software and voila I get the lovely email telling me I am no longer connected to the BES.  I tried removing the battery for a minute or so, but no joy.  Exploring further I noticed that under options>advanced options> enterprise activation that my email address is missing.  I have had this thing reset every day this week, I cannot figure out what I could be doing wrong.  Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

just uninstall dtm from add /remove programs and then re-install it from the cd that came with BB, and during the setup choose BIS as a install option.
yes you have to buy 6 pack i guess.

  • Wont boot - no chimes, fan noise but only with battery connected

    Hello,
    It's an old Powerbook G4 - A1138 that won't boot.
If you press the power button, the fan whirrs quickly and loudly. But only with the battery connected. If the battery is removed (but the computer is connected to the power supply) then nothing happens...
I have tried re-setting the PMU as per this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 This didn't help.
Is it now dead? If I can just reach a point whereby I can boot it in Firewire HD mode (normally holding command + T down) and recover content then great!
    Thanks :-)

I get the opening fanfare when kde starts.
I also could hear a video that happened to be in a tab when Firefox started.
None of the sound programs (kcsd, amarok, etc) utter a peep.

  • Extreme fan noise on Retina Macbook Pro "15 2012

My Macbook runs very loud without intensive apps open when I connect it to a Thunderbolt Display for over an hour. I have tested this to great length, it doesn't matter whether it's photoshop, microsoft word or google chrome that's running, it's the fact that it has to power an external display.
I have taken it to Apple Support, however they perform their cooling system tests in 18 degree airconditioning so it's impossible to demonstrate how loud it gets at normal room temperature.
I presented this problem twice within my warranty period, but Apple will simply do their test and deny any problem as the fans barely start up in the cold test environment. They did say that if my laptop overheats and becomes damaged, they will cover the damages because I made the complaint within the warranty period. Now my warranty has expried (I simply didn't have time to waste taking the computer to Apple again within the last two months).
Is there anything I can do to get my laptop fixed? I'm pretty sure the graphics card was faulty to begin with as it cannot take the load of a Thunderbolt Display over an extended period. There are so many documented cases of issues concerning fan noise and overheating with the 2012 rMBP, is Apple not going to do anything about it?!

High CPU usage will make the fans run faster (luder) you can try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery that should not remove yourself. Also have the Apple tech make sure you do not have a bad temp sensor.

  • Again imac 309rs/a fan noise

    Hello!
    problem with fans again
After hanging my imac - fan began to publish a crackling sound. that this could be?
    few image's of istat
    here look's like all right
    and here:
imac didnt hanging again, but noise crash my mind
so what i try to do:
    reset SMC (cmd+opt+r+s)
have on idea, about what i need to do now
or it's question for service? (actualy its very sad - imac work just around 4 months)

This could be a completely different issue, but occasionally I've encountered loud fan noise from my iMac. It's not a crackling sound, though, just a loud fan. Anyway, the fix for me is to unplug the power cord from the back of the computer then plug it in again. The fan noise disappears. Not sure this applies to your problem but it's worth a try.

  • Problems with new Yoga 2 Pro (battery, fan noise, yellow, screen orientation, on-screen keyboard)

I purchased the Yoga Pro 2 on Thursday October 17. I love the computer for so many reasons, (especially since it replaces my 4 year old Compaq that was 6.5lbs!) however, I am also having a few issues with it.
It is the i7/8GB/256GB model from BestBuy. I am experiencing the same yellow issue as is mentioned by many on here. I didn't realize it, though, until reading these forums and then comparing to my old computer and my ipad and iPhone. A little disappointed, though it looks like Lenovo may be working on a solution.
But the real reason I originally came to look at this forum is because of 2 things: my fan and battery.
The fan (on the right side of the keyboard) is always on! I didn't expect this, and am wondering if mine is a lemon or if others are noticing the same thing. It's pretty noticeable, especially in a quiet room. I was showing off my new computer to a friend and the very first thing she said was that it was loud! She was using a MacBook pro, which wasn't making any noise at all.
The second thing is the battery... I am attaching 4 photos all taken within a few minutes of each other. If you cant see them, they are all of the battery meter on my screen. I am listing the time of day (to show how much time passed), percent remaining, and time remaining:
    10:04  (88%)  306 hr 15 min
    10:05  (88%)  8 hr 48 min
    10:09  (86%)  4 hr 54 min
    10:29  (81%)  5 hr 12 min
I feel like my computer just cant make up its mind!!
Another issue I had... I turned on my computer to show it to a friend (same friend who said it was noisy) and the screen image wouldn't flip when in any of the modes. This means I showed her the stand mode with an upside down image. Even in tablet mode I couldn't get it to flip. I turned the computer off and then on again, and luckily it decided to work, but it was frustrating, and I hope it's not something that becomes an issue.
Also, when I have the computer in tablet mode, the keyboard automatically pops up when I click somewhere to type... but this doesn't happen in stand mode or tent mode. Is this normal? I would have thought that the keyboard would appear in any of those modes, since the real keyboard is not accessible in any of them. And of course now that I am testing it out while writing this, none of the modes (including tablet) is having the keyboard come on screen. Of course, I know I can always choose the icon on the task bar to bring up the keyboard, but it would be nice if the computer did it automatically since it knows there is no other keyboard accessible in those modes. Is this an issue anybody else has had?
I really do enjoy using this computer, but some of these issues really need to get worked out if I am going to keep it. I'd love to hear if anyone is experiencing anything similar, and if there are any good fixes!

I just got a Lemontine Yoga 2 Pro i5/8GB/256GB from lenovo.com and the silver one from BestBuy in the same configuraiton.  The silver one has no issues except for the crazy number of hours remaining on the battery which is fine, doesn't bother me.  The fan noise is very quiet, and you can only hear it if you put your ear up to the vents in a quiet room.
Now the Clementine one...It was heating up pretty good.  I put my ear to it on many occasions and can hear nothing at all, the fan is either missing LOL or doesn't work.  I had an issue where I left the thing on for 4 hours, but sleep is configured after 5 hours.  When I tried to use it, it showed me the screen brielfy, then blank.  Tried hard reset, called Support, nothing.  Support says its dead.  Ok, an hour later, it turned on.  I'm guessing it was too hot and was in some mode to protect itself, like a smartphone that is left out in the sun for some time, it won't power on till its cooled down.
I'm still in process of trying to get a hold of Lenovo to swap it, but since they no longer sell this configuration, I doubt they'll be able to get me a new one.
The silver one from BestBuy us solid though, love it, best in class in my opinion...actually got it from Future Shop sorry...from Canada, but they're essentially the same store.

  • IMac g5 fan noise with update to 10.4.11

    Has anyone else experienced this?
I have never had any problems with fan noise with my iMac, though I know it's a problem, till the recent update to 10.4.11. After restarting, it sounded like an airplane. Never heard that before. I shut it down and restarted, and it doesn't sound like a plane anymore, but the fan is noticeably noisier than ever before, a constant whine/hum.
Besides the energy saver fix and resetting the SMU and canned gas in the vents, any other suggestions? This is annoying, it's been running pretty perfect for three years till this. Thanks.

The questions are certainly not dumb - almost anywhere is cheaper than Apple for RAM, I recommend [macsales.com] and [smalldog.com] or [newegg.com]. I don't think that going back to 10.4.10 will help, you should really vacuum the vents to get dust out, and make sure that there's nothing hogging your CPU and making the fans noisy, look at Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor to see if anything is using an unusual amount of memory or CPU.
If you do want to install Leopard, I would suggest making a full backup of your system,I use SuperDuper! to clone my system to a firewire external drive. You should certainly upgrade your RAM if you install Leo, but I don't think your machine will be any quieter with a new OS.
You need to remember that your machine is several years old, and that things get creaky with age (I certainly have). Since you have the iSight, it's not a simple matter to open it and clean the fans off. If you are really disturbed by the noise, you can take it in to an Apple service place and have them clean and oil the fans, which should help enormously.
Sorry I couldn't offer more help, but fans will, and do, get noisy.

  • IMac sleeping automatically more and more frequently with hudge fan noise

A few days when I was watching a DVD my computer started to sleep suddendly.
Of course I desactivated sleeping option in preferences panel and I also tried to reset the nvram without success.
It was getting worse when I tried to play games (on DVD) : every minutes the computer started to sleep (iMac G5 iSight 20")
Now it is not a matter of DVD, my computer often sleeps every 20 seconds even during startup, it is impossible to work. When I restart there are hudge fan noises which are not disappearing after starting.
The only way to work without the imac sleeping every 20 s is to boot under my safe tech tool pro partition.
I tried to repair permissions, reinstall combo update, delete caches with Onyx, ran techtools tests and as I said reset nvram...without result
If I can get some help it would be nice, I am currently backing up all my data in case...

You are dong the right thing by backing up, it sounds as if your power supply is going bad. What did TechTool report?
Have you tried booting from the install disc and verifying/repairing the drive? Try running the Apple Hardware Test as well, but it doesn't always catch things. It does sound like a hardware problem, if none of the suggestions helps, call Apple.

  • Worrying about iMac with Logic Pro. (i mean big fan noise)

    hi.
i am thinking about buying a new iMac with Apogee Ensemble. but i am a bit worried about the fan noise from imac when i use lots of plug-ins and etc.
well... the best way is to buy a Mac Pro and stash the machine in a machine room or a cabinet or something. but the budget is low here.
does anyone have any good ideas? do i have to take the fan noises? or is it really so powerful so that makes no such big fan noises?
    thanks

I have no doubt that you and I haven't been reading the same posts, but I was under the impression that most people were much more infuriated that there was no announcement or run up to the launch (and thus they bought L9 just before).
Actually, we have been reading the same posts! Apple, historically, have never (and I do mean NEVER) pre-announce releases of Logic Pro. They are always announced on release day, even going back to before the Mac App Store, when boxed versions were still available. Apple do have quite a generous refund policy, so I suggest that anyone who feels cheated could always 'report an issue' via the link in the receipt email and try and obtain a refund. Personally, I would never buy a current version of Logic Pro until July was over, but as I've been using it for over 11 years now (before Apple bought Emagic), I guess I'm very familiar with the release times.
So why not keep support for EXSManager/Keymap, or at least a download link for paying customers. There is no other program that can do what it did unless you want to go back to an old version of Logic and utilise functionality that they removed yet is still relevant today.
Redmatica wouldn't have been allowed (under the terms and conditions of the buyout), to keep making the EXSManager, it would have been illegal as it's now an Apple product. That's like saying why didn't Emagic keep making a version of Logic for the PC after Apple bought them, because they obviously weren't allowed under the terms and conditions because it became an Apple product. While I can understand your frustration, you also have to understand the legalities that take place during takeovers and buyouts, as it's really not as simple as it may at first appear.

  • Dreaded fan noise is BACK!

I can't believe my ears, but the same fan noise from my 20" G4 iMac is now BACK in my iMac 20" CoreDuo!! It took much longer to rear it's ugly head, but I can clearly hear the "fan wobble" coming from the iMac. This time, it's louder as well. MUCH louder. It can be heard over music or with most low background noise.
Has anyone else experienced this wobble noise? This is terribly annoying.

If your signature information is up-to-date then your new Mac is not. Have you installed the Firmware 1.0.1 update? The SMC Firmware update? The OS X 10.4.6 update?
