Fan Noise on Brand New MBP

I just got my new MBP (2.53), and I have a fan that sounds like a little lawn mower, right under the keyboard. The loudness rises and falls, but it's not subtle. It's kind of like having a mosquito buzz your ear while your working. Not a lot of fun.
I have a return for repair setup. I have not had it for more than 24 hours, butiIt was built to order with a 250 Gb hard drive, so I can't just swap it out.
I'm only posting to add a data point for others who may be wondering whether there are early-run problems with these. Mine was built on 27 October.
I've had an iBook, PowerBook, and MacBook: none of them had fan noise anything like this.

Mine was the same way. Actually, there are a number of other threads on these forums specifiing the same exact issue.
The Fan under the keyboard "Buzzed" or "Sounded like a little lawnmower" like you say for me too. Apple says they couldn't replace the fan itself because the part was too new, so instead im getting a while new computer. While this is great, it is not a solution for my problems. Now I have no computer at all while I wait for this replacement, and I might run into other issues some people are having such as a flickering screen, or dead pixels.
Oh well I guess. Our price for paying Apples outstanding premium for quality

  • Kernel Panic and a strange sound on a two days brand new MBP 17" i7

I just got a brand new MBP 17" i7 two days ago. Already had two issues:
    1. On the first day while the computer was doing an automatic software update I heard a loud horn type sound coming from within the machine. After that the screen turned grey with the Apple logo and a status bar underneath. After that the machine returned to the "normal" screen and keep working.
    2. Yesterday while trying to set up a mighty mouse the computer gave me the kernel panic screen. I turned the computer off and then on again and everything seems fine.
I contact Apple and they gave me two options for my peace of mind:
    1. Take the computer to an Apple Genius bar
    2. Send the machine back to the store
I own an iMac and a Macbook and this things had never happened before. I don't think it's normal for a brand new computer to do things like that.
This incidents took place within the first two day of receiving the computer, but maybe down the road or as I start installing programs like Final Cut Studio 3 or Office for Mac, things could complicate...
    What do you recommend?

    Hi there.
The noise you heard and the status bar is usually the result of a firmware update being installed. Nothing to be concerned with and in fact will probably happen again if they just swap out the machine.
The kernel panic may have just been a fluke but you could try running the Apple Hardware Diagnostics that actually shipped with the machine to rule out hardware. If the tests come back ok then you could try to just re-install the OS.
    Good luck.

  • Aperture 3 not working on brand new MBP???

Just tried to open Aperture 3 on my brand new MBP and I get this error message:
    Dyld Error Message:
      Library not loaded: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
      Referenced from: /Applications/Aperture.app/Contents/MacOS/Aperture
Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:
/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager: no matching architecture in universal wrapper
I downloaded A3 from the Mac Store, I've deleted it and re-installed and still get the same message. My MBP is running 10.6.8.
Any ideas, hope you can help.
    Thanks!

Hi, Thanks! The solution on the Macrumors forum worked! A plugin manager issue!
I've copied the solution below for anyone else who may run into the issue.
Turns out it's a simple fix.
For those with the same problem:
    1. Navigate to: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
    2. Delete the PluginManager
    3. Get a new copy of the PluginManager. (You can copy one from a friends macbook) or use the one hosted here: http://qvenon.com/files/PluginManager.zip
    Thanks again!

  • Clicking noises on brand new laptop.

Hi, I bought a HP Pavilion 15-e 013sa on Monday from Curry's and when home I noticed it was making quiet clicking noises on the left (or middle). I took it back to the shop and was given a new one to pick up today. Got it home and it's making the same noise.
Is this common of this model? It's really getting to me now and I have a horrible feeling when given a replacement it will do the same.
    Thanks.

I've never heard a laptop make this particular noise which is why I am worried.
And yes, hard to check without hearing the noise, it's just a low tapping/clicking that sounds like it's coming from the left but when you turn the laptop it's the middle.
It doesn't sound like a noise a brand new laptop should be making.
Thanks for the reply, I'm going to take it back in tomorrow and get one of their tech guys to check it.

  • Hey i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge

i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge. I tried using a friends MBP charger of the same year as my computer but it still says not charging at the top right corner of the computer screen where the charging symbol is. This problem just happened out of nowhere because it was working the day before then the next day it just stopped working saying it is not charging. I tired doing all of the suggested techniques to fix it but not luck.
This is the battery report is when my MBP is either connected to my charger or my friends charger which works perfectly on her computer.

  • The fan on my brand new Imac Quadcore is blowing extremely loud. Is this normal

The fan on my brand new Imac Quadcore is blowing extremely loud. Is this normal?

I have the same problem on my 2010 IMAC 27" I7. Even if the mac is running at idle it occurs. It was already at the apple store for repair.
Later they told me, they found nothing with the hardware test so its not their problem?!!!
the activity monitors shows also nothing special, even the cpu's are at idle. No streaming or rendering, just working on the web or some normal documents...
I runned smcfancontrol to check whats going on. It seems that the onboard temperature sensor is measuring wrong instantly so they SMC thinks, its to hot/or not and then spinning up the fans to full power.
SMC reset is not really working, or just for some hours.
    Can anybody else help?
    Thx

  • Magic mouse lag on brand new MBP

    Hello,
I received my MBP 15" (Mid 2012) several days ago. But my Magic Mouse doesn't work very well with it. The cursor lags every several minutes to one hour or two, and lasts for several seconds to several minutes every time. I don't mean that the movement is slow - when it happens, the cursor doesn't follow the movement of the mouse very well, it seems 'jittery'. The cursor may "jump" to the destination 0.3~1 second after I moving the mouse. I tried everything I can do but the problem is still not solved. Here are what I've tried:
    * Setting my router to 5ghz band
    * Turn the mouse off and on.
    * Turn the mouse off, replace the batteries to new ones, and turn on.
    * Restart the computer.
    * Remove the mouse from the list of Bluetooth devices, and pair again.
    * Reset PRAM and SMC.
    * Disable WIFI.
    * Unplug everything in my room that has a wireless receiver, including Xbox, Apple TV, etc, and remove the batteries of their controllers.
None of the above works! However, I also have a Magic Trackpad which also uses Bluetooth but it works fine. I tested the Magic Mouse on my old MacBook Pro and it works without any problem. The distance between the mouse and the laptop is less than 2ft.
Mouse still works fine on my old 2010 MBP.
Brand new MBP 15", 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM.

I had the same problem with my new Retina Macbook Pro and my Magic Mouse that worked fine on my previous 2010 Macbook Pro.  At work I don't have a wifi network so I share my ethernet connection via wifi so I can get internet on my iPhone and iPad during the day.  After reading this thread I tried turning off the internet sharing and it has cleared up all lag issues with the mouse.
Just thought I'd share my fix.  Hopefully Apple can clear up whatever issues are causing this so I can get wifi back to my devices at work.

  • How much does OSX take up on a brand new MBP HD?

Does anyone know on a Brand new MBP 128 SSD drive....how much is allocated to the OSX?
    Thanks in advance

You do need to install Windows twice - once under Boot Camp and once under Parallels - but you can legally use the same CD with the same licence for both installations. There is no need to buy two copies.
There is a program called Monolingual that will assist in removing the additional language support. Be care, as it has removed the components needed to run Rosetta for some users who were not as careful as they should have been.
Parallels has to run from within OS X, but some people have had success running Windows off of an external drive. I have not tried it, but the instructions can be found HERE.

  • FaceTime problems on 3 brand new MBP 13 Retina, Apple has given in

    Hi All,
After recieving 3 brand new machines (MBP13 Retina) in Dec 2013 and Jan 2014, Apple does not believe they can deliver a proper working brand new machine. They also won't look into the problem and hope i can accept this faulty machine.
Is that what Apple is turned into? A company that doesn't believe they can fix their own machines? Or do they not care anymore about their customers and their product?
The person I'm facetiming with cannot hear me when we talk at the same time. My (3 brand new, but all 3 faulty) machines will mute me, so the other party cannot hear me. It is back to the walky talky ages again, 'over'.
Since I'm a great believer of Apple, I cannot believe they won't fix this problem and just keep on selling and delivering brand new MBP 13 Retina machines that don't work.
Does nobody at the Apple company care anymore, is there no company pride?

after a week of working on this problem the last straw was spending  3 hours being helped with this problem by 1mb.com after which time they asked me either to take out a years  support at £129 or pay for help from a better qualified technician! As I only received my IPad last week I am going to send it back tomorrow. why doesn't Apple respond when it is obvious from all the discussions that there is a problem? Considering the price of the iPad I feel thoroughly disillusioned and cheated as well as frustrated by spending so many hours to no avail. this was not the only problem I've encountered but it is the one I've wasted most time trying to resolve./

Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
    Do you???
    Thanx
    Jay

I'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments.

  • Noise in brand new Penryn MB Pro?

    Hello there,
I just replaced my aging PowerBook G4 with a brand-new MacBook Pro 15 inch, 2.6 GHz.
The machine is blazing fast, especially compared to my old laptop. Leopard really sings on this machine, and the display is just gorgeous!
My only question for others who have received these machines and have upgraded from older models is whether you have found, like I do, at least subjectively, that these machines are somewhat noisier than the G4 models they have replaced.
Specifically, hard drive access noise seems a bit more pronounced, that is, you hear more of a hollow, metallic sound coming from the laptop case. this isn't really annoying to me, it's just a bit of a difference from what I'm used to. (My machine has the 250 GB drive in it.)
Second, fan noise, or what I take to be fan noise, seems more pronounced. There is a fairly steady, low pitched hum coming from the right side of the machine, near the right speaker. Sometimes, the pitch of the common will rise, which I'm guessing is the fan speeding up.
I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth taking the machine in to the Apple Store for a once-over by one of their technicians, or is there some other kind of diagnosis I should do at home first to see if these noises are normal?
Other than that, these are gorgeous machines and I am thrilled with mine.

Well, here's the promised update, and it's rather interesting.
I was getting nervous because it appeared that after arriving at the repair depot, my laptop was just sitting there and not getting fixed. After a couple of days of no change in status on the Support website, I called, and an Apple Care representative told me that "the machine is in engineering right now, which doesn't usually happen." But he couldn't tell me what it meant.
The next day, I received an e-mail from someone in Apple Care, letting me know that Apple was going to offer me a choice of resolutions to the situation. According to the e-mail, the engineering department wanted to keep my laptop to be able to further pinpoint the cause of "the failure." If I let them keep my current machine, they would send me a *brand-new replacement laptop* of the same configuration straight from the Apple Store. However, they had no provisions for backing up or transferring whatever data is currently on the machine.
The other option I was given was to allow them to go ahead and repair my current machine. In the end, that's what I decided to do because getting a brand-new machine from the Apple store seems to be another gamble... if that one had a noisy fan, stuck pixels or some other issue, I'd be back to square one.
I promise to report back again when I have my repaired laptop back home... that should be by the early part of next week. I'm sharing this with all of you because it sounds to me as if Apple is becoming aware of some sort of manufacturing flaw in this earliest run of new laptops, causing the noise problems attested to in this thread and others. That's the only way I can explain the engineering department wanting to keep my old unit for further study.
    To be continued...

  • Fan noise when tilting the MBP (Late 2008)

When I tilt my new MBP to the front or to the side (maybe 30 to 50°), it makes a louder noise than usual. Thus, this also occurs when I put the MBP on a notebook stand. I suppose, it comes from a fan. Another MBP I tried, did not make this noise.
When the notebook is just standing even on a table, I hear this buzzing sound we can read about in another thread. But really quiet. I have to put my ear quite close to the keyboard.
And I hear a quiet and deeper unbalanced sound. But this could also come from the hard drive.
Is the phenomenon I described a problem or could it turn into one? Might this noise (these noises) even get louder or might some part fail? Do some of you also hear this noise (these noises) on their MBP or MB?
As I feel that no device is abolutely perfect, I am a bit worried about getting the MBP exchanged. Everything else seems to be fine. None of the typical and widespread problems.
Is the mentioned phenomenon something I do not have to worry about too much and that can be repaired without any problems at a later date at a local store?
    Thank you in advance!

    Thank you for your answers!
Unfortunately we do not have the same service infrastructure in Germany as over here Apple distributes its products primarily through premium resellers. The original Apple stores are just starting in Europe. But the resellers have their own Apple certified service technicians. I hope the fan replacement really doesn't take longer than one workday.
Can each of the fans inside the MBP be replaced easily? Even the one on the graphic card? How many fans are in there?
Is it possible that this buzzing sound doeas not occur all the time?
This deeper unbalanced noise seems to come from another source. Somehow you could say it is a pulsation. Can you hear this noise as well?
Would you suggest me to get the MBP exchanged (maybe for a device with other problems) or repaired?

  • Silly noise on brand new ipod classic????

Hi .... I have recently bought an ipod classic 160gb. I was looking forward to finally getting an apple gadget - everyone always says they're so good.
The first thing that I noticed is that it makes this high pitched noise every time you select a song.... It doesn't do it every time, but if you selected 100 songs ... it would probably do it 50 - 60 times out of that 100....
I took it to the genius bar and they told me that all ipod classics do this, that it was the hard drive working and that it was nothing to worry about. I have never had any gadget, mp3 player or even phone make this noise when scrolling through music... In a loud environment you would never hear it, but in a quiet room - say a library, study or an office it can be heard from a few feet.
I accept that hard drives make noises sometimes, but I've never had a device do this before - it's like a little laser sound every time you change track. It's quite annoying and not a very good start for something that was brand new for the price of £190.
Has anyone else experienced this? I tried to exchange it, but the shop said they could see nothing wrong. Do they all make this sound or was I just being fobbed off a bit?
Thanks if anyone has any thoughts.

Hi, thank you very much for your reply. A lot of people seem to say that which sounds good, so at least it's not broken. Thanks... But it still means it will always make that little beep sound every time it's used... A bit annoying in quiet places like when studying...

  • System overload on brand new MBP 15"

    Hi everyone,
Last week i bought a new 15" retina Macbook pro (2.0 Ghz quad-core i7, 8gb RAM, ssd). I mainly plan to use it for recording and mixing in Logic. With my previous macbook (13"  2011 model, the cheapest at that time) i got the system overload quite frequently. I bought this new 2000 dollar Macbook, and I still get this error.
Don't get me wrong, I understand what this error means and why it's there, it's just that I thought such an expensive machine would be able to handle this easily. There is one core that it continuously spiking and 4 others are only at 15%. My overall CPU load (according to MiniUsage) is only around 15% when I get the error. Also, the fans are completely quiet.
Is there a way to push my macbook into full processing power? Or is your advice to buy the even more expensive one? I understand that the cores are 'only' 2.0 Ghz each, but is this not enough for logic? Should I return this one if this is what I plan to do with it?
Again, I am aware of the tricks to reduce the CPU load (split track and plugins, Low latency mode, select an empty track etc) and I know logic can only assign one thread to one core, but I don't want this to be neccesary on a brand new two thousand dollar machine.  On top of this it seems it's not pushing the CPU when it's needed.
So I think my question is, should i buy a different system, or is this just normal for a new macbook pro? Because now I'm kinda stuck with a "bad bargain" feeling.
Some advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Joep

Sounds like you need to increase your buffer. Go to prefs - Audio  and increase the I/O Buffer size to the next highest setting, then keep going up if you still experrience issues.
Remember you can use Low Latency Mode if you have a delay when recording. Shocks me that they have relegated this feature to such a obscure place, but a quick google search or peek in the manual will help you find it and use it.
Btw, this is my backup .me account, so nvm the low level.
