Fan noise unbearable ; Mac Pro 3.2 GHz 8-core, purchased in March...

Hi,
The noise from the top rear fan has steadily become unbearable. There is a constant rattle that I can even hear from an adjacent room.
This is not a tick tick tick of the fan hitting a ribbon cable - or the sound of a jet enginethat occurs when the fans get stuck in top gear. It is a constant and irritating rattle like a badly oiled or misaligned wheel. Or a cheap fan.
I am a film composer and can not work with this noise in my room! I certainly can no longer record acoustic instruments anywhere near my MacPro.
Do I get the machine replaced? The fan is sealed and looks nearly inaccessible. I have removed the drives from bay 3 and 4 to see if that made a difference. It didn't.
Help!
Thanks

Hi Matthias,
Thanks for your reply.
I've sinced been looking at other forums on the web and found this thread here at Apple discussions:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1511831&start=30&tstart=0
The sound my Mac is making is also like a noisy fridge... Does that sound like a power supply issue?
I also have the dreaded ATI 2600 card. And a WD drive...
The noise really seems to be coming from that sealed enclosure above drives 3 and 4. What else is in there apart from the power supply? Do you know?
Cheers.

Can a Mac Pro (2.66 ghz duel core (4cores)) be upgradable to support Thunderbolt displays and other devices. Does this need to be done through the Graphics card expansion or a additional card to be inserted?

No. There is no way to upgrade any Mac Pro older then the cylindrical 2013 Mac Pro to ThunderBolt.
The requirements of Thunderbolt require a totally redesigned motherboard and chip set rather any plugin cards. These motherboard were never developed for older Mac Pros.

  • Wake From Sleep Reboots New Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8-core 10.5.2

Add me to list of users with this problem.
    I bought NEW computer yesterday.
    Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8-core 10.5.2
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Yesterday, I ZeroWrote the OEM Apple hard drive and Installed 10.5.1 from OEM Install disks -- ran all updaters, repaired permissions numerous times during build.
Only 2gb OEM Apple RAM installed
Added on (from original installers): CS3, Office 2008, Toast 8.03, Stuffit 12.01, Silverfast AI 6.5x (Epson 4990). It appeared to be waking properly during the build.
Last night, last Software Update updater ran was ATI RADEON HD 2600 XT Firmware UPC 1.0.
This morning, wake from sleep rebooted machine.
Apple had me disconnect all cables, including power cable for a minute and then plug back in.
This worked for a couple few minute sleeps, but after lunch it rebooted again waking it from sleep.

I got my 8-core StartUp Disk deselected and have had only one auto reboot when waking from sleep.
HOWEVER, now I have heavy vertical bands twice now when it wakes up my 30" Cinema Display:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6919620#6919620
It had wide vertical banding, white edges in corners and edges, and white fog over entire screen that seemed burned into the screen -- it eventually corrected itself back to normal after being on over a couple hours.
Second time, I had wide vertical banding, 6" and 3" wide with rows of white, green, blue pixels.
I connected the 30" to the old Mac Pro -- 10.4.11 -- AND THE BANDING GRAINY SCREEN APPEARED CONNECTED TO THE OTHER MAC like it was burned in the LCD.
So it appears the banding is in the monitor the monitor.
The burn-in cleared itself after being on about 120 minutes.
*It seems the new Mac Pros have some devilish issues with sleep on their Apple Cinema Displays to the point it is destroying the monitors -- or it is coincidence...*

  • Mac Pro 3.2 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon Running Slow

    Hi everyone!
I'm a professional photographer and could use some advise, and thanks for your help in advance!
I have a Mac Pro 3.2 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 8 gigs of 1066 MHz DDR3 of memory, running on OS 10.9.5, and my main drive for applications is 1TB and has about 420 GB free. I have various other hard drives for storage.
I use Chrome, Lightroom 4, Photoshop CC2014, Blogstomp, Spotify or iTunes, and I have Backblaze Backup running continuously.
When I first got my computer I didn't have any problems, but over the past few months it's been running super slow. I know that LR4 has issues, but I want to make sure that there isn't anything else I need to look into before getting more memory. I mean even Chrome opening up has the beachball.
    Thanks!

My guess is this is a 5,1 2010-2012. You could use a GTX 680 or later, it has good PCIe (the 2009 is somewhat weaker and crippled by sharing slots 3&4)
A Samsung XP941 512 $525 delivers 1100MB/sec reads and 900MB/sec writes to supercharge your system - one of the best and few such, similar to the same SSD blade used in the nMP 6,1. Lightroom and CS love to be able to load and write scratch, graphic libraries. Bootable. You could use a smaller 256GB $275 for system in slot #3 and one for data and scratch in slot #4 if you wanted to go full out.
You said it was fine originally so maybe something you installed, or an upgrade to the OS or something else that Etrecheck should help show.

  • Problem with mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core and Mini Display Port

Finally I see the button to create new post!
I would like to explain a problem I have with my mac pro 2x2.93 GHZ Dual Core Intel Xeon processors and the ATI Radeon HD 4870.
I have two 30 "Apple. After buying the new Mac Pro is one of the two monitors, only with the monitor all black, small horizontal lines.
This happens only to the monitor connected to the mini display port... So if you reverse it monitors the problem always moves on the board connected to the Mini Display Port.
Apple has already changed my video card and the adapter but the problem is still there.
Someone can tell me if it is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 that has problems to have two monitors 30 "? Or it could be that the mini display port that is hard to read the two monitors and when the background is black (RGB-255-255-255) makes these lines?
Through the Apple store I then bought a new card (EVGA GeForce GTX 285 "). Unfortunately, after three weeks of waiting is not yet arrived. Proof that I want to do before returning to telephone assistance is whether on a card that has two dual-link DVI ports normal all goes well.
Sorry for the repetition of messages, but my English is very bad. This is the first time I connect to this site support

In any case, this system does not support two 30".
I honestly don't think the 4870 with that adapter can support two 30". Just using the adapter itself would not give me the normal resolutions on my 30, where as the DVI port did. Luckily for me the adapter worked fine on my 20".
Truly I don't know why Apple would sell a card and not say just what displays it can power.
So I worked around my problem fine but I chose to get the 285 also. My question to you though is, did Apple make you pay for it? Was it part of a deal with them because the Radeon didn't work? You might want to talk to them about that. That is one expensive card.

  • Excessive Fan Noise in Mac Pro (Late 2008)

Starting in October of 2009, at about one year of age, my Mac Pro started cycling through periods of excessive fan noise: the fan goes from quiet/inaudible to so loud that I cannot hear talking on the radio in the room.
    Re-set the PRAM.
    Re-set the SMC.
Ran HW Test (Full test) and got the following: 4sns/1/40000000:tcbh -127.500
    Called Apple Support.
Re-ran Hardware Test showed no problem.
Did nothing more. Machine seemed fine.
In January of 2010, the problem returned.
Ran HW test (Full test) and got the following: 4sns/1/40000000:tcbh -127.500
Per instructions from Apple over the phone, I took the Mac Pro to a "Genius" at the local Apple Store "Genius Bar."
The "Genius" booted the Mac Pro on the store network (while I waited) and got the same error message. The "Genius" said he would order some parts and install them.
    Left machine.
Received call one day later from another "Genius." He said the first "Genius" was wrong. They've been running the machine continuously with no error message at all. (BTW, he treated me like an idiot, though he clearly didn't have all the facts in the store's own record about the machine. Typical 20-something IT kid.) After some argument, he agreed to run more tests. Received another call fro yet another "Genius" telling me the machine was OK.
    I picked up the machine.
The fans continue their behavior, BUT HW test (full test) now shows NO error.
At rope's end. Clearly Apple will be of no assistance, despite the warranty I paid for.
The machine cannot be used in the same room as I as I cannot talk on the phone, etc., with the fans running so loud, which they appear to do every 30 to 60 minutes.
    Any ideas?
    Some thoughts:
The problems started not long after installing 10.6. Coincidence?
I am not sure, but I think the fans go nuts whenever I use iTunes or Quicktime. I have not tested this and I could be wrong, but whenever I have those programs closed, the fans seem to settle down.
If no one has any ideas, I'm thinking of selling the machine and getting something else, as it is not useful "as is."

There are reports of the new MacPros having heat issues rendering audio (QuickTime/ iTunes).
Seems to be a hardware configuration issue not a software problem.

  • FCP 5 on Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core - project won't open

I feel SICK. I bought this Mac Pro and a new monitor, transferred all my data from my iMac and tried to open my FCP 5 project and what opened was a "new" project screen... yet there was a tab with my project's name on it as if it should have been there. Can I run my fcp 5 on this new Mac Pro?

I was afraid of that. However, in the the last 15 minutes, I opened another project and that opened, seemed to play correctly, so I'm confused. Is 5.0 not for Intel because of speed? Or actual editing capabilities? (Just need an education on that). So when I get FCP 2, once I've opened the program, can it read FPC 5.0 projects? And will I be able to convert the 5.0 projects into the FCP 2?
Good to know about the gigs. We ordered 4 the other day, so we should have 5 total since 1 came with the computer. Thanks for your guidance.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 ghz, Intel Core 2 duo Upgradeability

I want to purchase a 2.66ghz Mac pro, now in my price point, but want to know if I can upgrade the Procs from the TWO Dual cores to two Quads to make an 8 core sometime next year. Can the existing MOBO handle this upgrade or do I have to replace it?

    I've been lurking around
Haven't seen you around these parts lately. Hope that rig is smoking fast! and I suppose you'll sell again in a year when there are more "mature" systems (the next update will likely come someday but be a stepping stone).
The new rig is definitely faster even with day-to-day operations (no doubt from the increased HD speed, RAM, and 2.66-3.0GHz speed of each core). When I crunch video or do heavy multitasking is where the difference is definitely noticeable, though!
I'm not going to upgrade the upgrade when the next processor comes out, only because everything i read indicates 10-15% tops speed increase over what I have now. That's nothing like the 50%+ I got over the quad in rendering. I -will- try to get the next video card option as an upgrade kit, however, if it is offered. I like the 1900xt, but wish something even faster was available for Motion rendering.
And you're right about selling next year I try to keep upgrade after every major revision because the cost to do so is so small at that moment.

    Hi Guys,
I am planning to purchase a apple editing system for my Studio as i don’t have that much of budget so i am little confused with two systems.
    iMac 27" quad-core i5
3.4GHz/ 8GB/1TB/Ge Force GTX 775M  2GB ( New Machine) ( Is this Machine is good for HD editing?)
       2.  Mac pro 2.8 ghz ( 8 core ) 2009 model, I gb Graphic card , 16 gb ram,
6 Tb Hard Disk, Blackmagic Card ( Second Hand Machine)
Kingly suggest which machine should i go for as i need a machine for FCP HDEditing.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
This will be my first mac. Please advice....

I'm sorry, but the Mac Pro is 4 years old vs a new iMac.
    1066mhz vs 1600mhz ram
    16GB vs 32GB maximum RAM
    1GB  vs 2GB VRAM
    USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0
The 5770 is very old, the 775M is 2.5x more powerful despite being a "mobile" GPU.
    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php
As you can see here, the iMac is more powerful in every task except the highest multicore demands, even then only barely.

    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When its download finishes, close the installer and open Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable USB drive with Mountain Lion.
    2. Press Option key while your Mac is starting, select the external drive and open Disk Utility.

I have a Macbook pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (2011). Will Lion, Mountain Lion or Marverick makes it run faster or slower?

Snow Leopard is still the most efficient OSX from Apple.  I have a late 2011 MBP running Lion with no performance issues.
I suggest the following;  Install 8 GB RAM if you do not have that already.  (The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial).  The newer OSX's are trifle more RAM hungry.
Partition your HDD and install one of the newer OSX's in the new partition and try it out.  This allows you to 'retreat' to Snow Leoprad if you find the newer OSX is not to your liking.
Also note that the newer OSX's do not support PPC applications.  That means that there is a possibility that some of your current applications will not work and may have to be updated or replaced.
    Ciao.

  • 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini 2.66 Quad Core i7 ?

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini Server 2.66 Quad Core i7 ? I have a choice between these two for running Final Cut Pro X. Price is nearly the same.
The Mac Pro has a ePCI 512 display adapter, 16 GB RAM, more hard drive expansion and faster 1tb 7200 rpm conventional hard drive. FW 800.
The Mini Server has two 1 tb 5400 rpm conventional drives, 16 GB RAM and an integrated display adapter. Has thunderbolt and FW 800.
My primary concern is the performance of the processors. Does anyone happen to know how they compare in video editing?

This may give you some ideas.
There are some folks on this forum who report very saticfactory results editing on Minis.
Perhaps they will chime in with first hand experience (which I can't give).
