Fan noise.  Was told bad memory riser.

My fans suddenly became incredibly loud.  Did SMC etc. to no avail.  Took it in, and was told the computer diagnosed it as a bad memory riser sensor.  Went home and tried every configuration (top riser out, bottom out, swapped etc) and each time the fans still went insane.
This can't posibbly be a riser sensor issue can it?  Unless they are both bad?!
Thank you!

  • IMac fan noise noticeable?

I am thinking of getting a new iMac. Am used to a very quiet computer, using a Macbook Pro 15inch. Does the iMac have much of a noticeable fan sound? Or is it basically quiet?
    Thanks,
    Richard

Today I layed the mac face down on the desk, removed the power cable and all periphials. I pluged the mac in (still face down) and powered up. The fan noise was still happenig. Just above the power supply I began applying a small amount of pressure against the case. As I increased pressure the fan noise got worse. In the spot that made the most differene in noise I continued to massage the case (if you will) assuming the fan enclosure was probrobly jared durring shipping causing the blades to rub the case as the fans turn. I then powered down, removed the cable, and took of the memory door just below the apple between the speakers. This is a great design by the way. Changing memory is almost as easy as pluging in a USB device. Anyhow, I made sure everything was tight and secure in there, closed the door, put the mac back upright, and powered up again.
Under this current boot I am not experiencing the fan noise. Maybe the fans moved enough to stop rubbing the case. Lets hope. I would hate to have to take this back to the apple store. I am in Lexington SC and the nearest apple store is in Charlotte NC 1.5 hours away. It's been runnning for aprox. 30 minutes now. "Still holding" Thanks for all of the responce.

  • G4 MDD has REALLY LOUD FAN noise!

    Hello All!
I've just purchased a dual 1.25 GHz MDD G4. It has a much louder fan than the Graphite G4 (Digital Audio) that I have been using. Is there anything that I can do about this? Is this a known issue... or maybe is it just this particular machine?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Just Wondering...
Are loud fans normal for these machines?
Yes. They were nicknamed "The wind-tunnel". The noise was so bad on the early models that Apple offered a free replacement power supply with a quieter fan (and a slightly lower power rating).

  • Noticeable fan noise

My fan (one of them, or both) seem to be making this obnoxious noise when they are running. The temperatures are normal, the fans are operating correctly, But when they spin up and spin down, there's this extra noise that goes along and it wasn't there before.
I fear that I dropped my Macbook Pro at one point--meaning it was in a sleeve and against the wall in an upright standing position and slipped to the floor to the flat positon. Could that have caused some misalignment? What should I do?
Not related to the noise or the fans, but when I make an impression on my trackpad I hear an odd tap sound. Just thought I'd hit two birds with one stone (question) here.

  • Fan noise when I Target Disk Mode - power supply or 500 GB drive, or RAM?

I have a Revision B iMac G5 which falls squarely in the power supply replacement program and has had the power supply replaced twice. I'm wondering if my extra RAM, or larger hard drive could be to blame for the fan speeds upramping at random during normal operation, and always when I Target Disk Mode the machine. I have a Western Digital WDC WD5000KS-00MNB0
and two 1 GB RAM modules with the following spec PC3200U-30330.
Before I try to pin down the cause one by one, has anyone noticed whether there are 500 GB drives on these Macs which will not up the fan speeds? Has anyone noticed whether target disk mode on these models will not increase the fan speeds when RAM is upgraded to 2 GB?

I have the same iMac as yours. Changed the original 80 gig hdd to a 250 gig. Both drives are seagate barracudas. I also upgraded the memory to 2gigs. The fan noise was terrible.
6 months later a ram module gives up the ghost. I originally thought hard drive, so purchased a Western digital 500 gig WDC WD5000AACS-00ZUB0. (The green power series).

    Fans very quite. still waiting for the replacement ram module;
to see if extra ram will increase fan noise

  • Intermittent shutdown, fan noise

I have an iMac G5 ALS, 17", 1.8ghz that I bought new from Apple in August '05.
The serial # starts with W853.
It has always had an over active fan IMHO, but I've read of this complaint often on these forums, so I never paid it much mind. In June '07 the iMac started intermittently shutting itself down so I brought it in. I had Apple Care thankfully so they swapped out quite a few parts, including some sensors, the Logic Board, and PSU.
I brought the iMac home, and within a day or too the hyper-active fan noise was back. However, the iMac was not shutting itself down randomly anymore... until today.
The system log shows me, "AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110"
It happened once, I haven't been able to reproduce it yet, but it of course has me worried.
I have central air in the house, the room never gets above 75 degrees.
The CPU at rest/casual computing is around 65 degrees with the fan whirring away at 5600rpm.
Hard Drive at 44 degrees, fan at 3206rpm.
WDC 49 degrees, fan at 2500rpm.
What is the real story with the iMac G5? Are there things I can actually do to keep this machine running while avoiding intermittent shutdowns, and reigning in this fan noise?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your experiences and advice.

I'm having a similar problem with the sudden shutdowns but not with the fan noise. This just started today after being out for a few hours I noticed that the computer was shut down instead of asleep. I booted it up and it shut down within a few minutes. This continued for several attempts and now I can't even get passed the startup sequence before it shuts down. I can't run any tests on it 'cause it will shut down in the process if not before. I am still under the extended warranty so I guess I will be taking mine in as well. What could be the cause of this? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

  • DV6 laptoip fan noise solution?

I recently upgraded my DV6-6100 to Windows 8 which is not an HP supported upgrade and eliminated the HP Power Manager and switchable graphics (Now running on the Intel graphics).
After the upgrade the laptop fan would switch to high speed periodically, run for a while, then go back to normal. Task manager did not show high CPU or other activity and SpeedFan showed temp at 117F-120F whether the fan was running or not. During the high speed runs the fan noise was objectionably loud.
I first tried to fix the problem by enabling FanAlwaysOn in the BIOS in he hope of eliminating heat build up but that didn't seem to help. I then tried changing the power profile to set Max CPU at various levels less than the 100% default and settled at 95%..
The fan now runs constantly but at a very low speed and is almost inaudible.  I can not tell any difference in performance but I do not have any CPU or graphics intensive apps with which to test. MS Office apps and  web and DVD video seem fine.
Is this expected behavior from changing the power profile to set maxCPU less than 100%?
Any down side from having the fan always on?

I had upgraded my touchsmart to Windows 8 since it was a touch enabled notebook.
Upon completion of the upgrade, my notebook ran a little on the warm side and the fan was quite loud.  I had discovered that the reason for this was that the switchable graphics system was broken by the upgrade.  This resulted in both cards running simultaneously which the notebook was not designed to handle the heat generated by both cards.
I did manage to get my switchable graphics to work and the system became much cooler and quieter.
I'm not certain if this will work in your particular scenario, but this is worth trying.
Try the steps exactly as outlined in this thread.  The steps do need to be followed in order as it typically fails when steps are omitted or done out of order.
The fan can fail early if it is constantly running, but let me know what happens with the steps provided.

  • Hello there, is there any way i can log onto Game Center via just my Username as i have forgotten the other details (I made the account when i was 11 - I'm now 14 and have a bad memory)

The Question says it all really.
Is there any way i can log onto Game Center via just my Username as i have forgotten the other details (I made the account when i was 11 - I'm now 14 and have a bad memory)?
I remember my Username on Gamcenter but due to the recent update of iOS7, it is only letting me Sign in through my APPLE ID - which i have forgotten over time. I wish to recover my account recently because I remember purchasing Gems on the game 'Clash of Clans' and I wish I could restart playing the game.
Many thanks for taking your time to read and answer this question.
    -Gavin Chong.

    Hey xChongy!
I have an article here that can help you find that forgotten Apple ID:

I'm trying to up grade the os but I keep getting the startup disk is full I ordered more memory I was told this will not help. What do I do?

I think as drive capacities increase, the old 10-15% becomes less accurate.  The amount of free space you need doesn't really have anything to do with the drive size.  So, increasing your drive size shouldn't mean that you need to have more free GB (which using a % of drive space would mean).  You need free space to accommodate page outs (the amount of which would depend on how much RAM you have installed and how memory intensive the applications are), sleep images (again, this would max out at your total amount of RAM), and a bit to minimize fragmentation.
With desktop drives commonly in the 2TB range today, it is certainly not necessary to have 200GB+ free in order to maintain proper operation.  I generally find about 30GB to be the minimum I'm comfortable with.  Mind you, I pretty much always have way more than that available.  But, if I'm working on a system and the amount of free space is at least 30GB, I would generally not site drive space as the cause of any performance issues.  I'd say that 30GB is a minimum for a stable system (with 8GB or RAM installed).  Of course at that amount, you would still need to free up space if you were to want to install or download any significant amount of data.
With servers being more likely to run into the 16GB of RAM range, more storage would be necessary.  Most servers should be well stocked with storage, but the actual needs would vary greatly depending on what's being "served".
The 10-15% thing came about when we used to talk about drive capacities in hundreds of MBs and RAM in terms of KB (not MB and certainly not GB).  More drive space is always a good thing, but as drive capacities continue to sky rocket, we don't need to dedicate larger amounts of storage on systems with the same specifications.  A set amount of space is required for proper operation regardless of the capacity of the drive installed.

  • PPC QUAD Owners -- Got Bad Fan Noise w/Logic (or just in general)?

I'm having a terrific noise problem with my Quad's (now) overactive fans. When I first got the Quad this was not a problem. Seems to have started after an update from 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 or 10.4.5. With respect to Logic, the fans go into hyperdrive (blowing relatively cool air) after I launch Logic, even when it's sitting idle with a bare-bones autoload song loaded (no plugs at all). When I quit Logic, the fans start to calm down but it takes sveral minutes to settle down completely.
Even accessing the dock or loading up this forum on Safari will cause the fans to rev, but Logic is the thing that seems to trigger this behavior the most -- and the worst.
Anyone else with a Quad is experiencing the same thing? Particularly with Logic running?
I'd be grateful if anyone can offer offer troubleshooting advice. Here's some info:
    - reinstalled the system software numerous times, no change
    - all Apple RAM installed (6 G)
    - running 2 monitors, but with only one connected, no difference
    - using wall current or UPS current makes no difference

Thanks for the continued feedback/replies. Will be living with the computer/hair dryer combo for another week as the Apple store techs in my area are all booked up until after Labor Day. Gotta say, tho, that the $100 to be a ProCare member gets ya good attention from those guys.
Would still appreciate hearing about other Quad owner's experiences with their fans/noise level of their systems, just for comparison sake.
Tele, glad to hear your fans are well-behaved. Wanna trade?  ;-)
    Thanks again everyone.

  • Fan noise after memory Upgrade

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini and I upgraded it to 2GB of memory and now I got a fan noise constanlty going. I have tried to reset the SMC and I left the machine without any cables plugged in for about 45 minutes after my second attempt.
I had upgraded the machine before and this never happened.
Any clue as what I got to do or what may be wrong?
    Thank you for any help!
Mac Mini 1.66 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac Mini 1.66 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

To quote from a post by "damfair":
There is a fan speed regulation wire at the front of the Mini that needs to be unattached to get to the RAM slots - if this is left unattached, the fan continually runs at full speed. Could this be the source of the constant fan noise?

  • ITunes update caused my iPhone to FAIL. I was only wishing to connect to my pc iTunes, then I was told I could upgrade to the latest iTunes for the mobile. Bad idea! I'm abroad, and now I'm stuck in grey screen-- how can I get my iPhone back?

Please help me, I am verging on desperation! I am flying tomorrow, so I was only trying to add some music to my iPhone.
During the process, connected to the latest version of iTunes for Windows, I was asked a seemingly innocent question-- would you like to
update your iTunes for iPhone?  If only I could go back and ignore this question,
But no, I am now stuck in purgatory-- no use of iPhone, at al! -- the upgrade FAILED. Perhaps because I'm in Asia? At any rate,
I was told that I needed to reformat my phone to factory settings (losing all data!) That was the info on the pc. My phone would ONLY display
a phone cord pointing to iTunes (beckoning to connect), but I was connected to the pc already. So I had to click to reformat.
There was no other option, I browsed tha forums, was semi-assured that iCloud would help back me up. I heard about iTools,
but that also proved a dead end.  My phone ended up in this grey screen, where choices are limited. They originally asked if I wanted to connect
with iTunes, but I chose WIFI. I tried many times to "activate" the phone this way, and it always fails. ( I wanted to try activating through
iTunes, but I can't go back to that original option. At times "Connect with iTunes" is only very briefly shown, but disappers before I can select
    it.)
Every time I'm left with the message "Your iPhone (failed) bec. the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting phone to iTunes"
    But HOW?

    Why did you disconnect it?
You will have to restore it.
Your data is gone if you failed to make sure it was on your computer before updating, as you always should you.

  • Is anyone having problems with a bad memory leak once iOS 6.1.1 was installed?

My phone has a bad memory leak and after about 4 hours of being on the memory will be so low that ir resets the phone.

There are a number of reports from people with VW vehicles. Try removing the phone from the list in the car. Then, remove the vehicle from the list in the phone. Do a reset on the phone, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. After the phone reboots, put the devices into discovery/pairing mode and see if they will connect. Otherwise, you might do a search of the forum looking for issues with VW vehicles.

  • Fan noise & Battery

    Hi guys....
Recently my macbook pro early 2008 (intel core 2 duo, 2gb RAM & 250gb Hard Disk) wouldn't switch on...
I saw a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPBN374PM7E) which told me to:
    1) Get the battery out.
    2) Hold the power button for 10secs.
    3) Keep holding the power button and insert the power cable.
    4) Do this for 10 secs.
    5) Then release and count again till 10secs, but the power cable still in.
    6) Insert the battery again after 10secs count down.
    7) The click the bottom on the battery.
    8) It switched on
Though, it made a loud noise of the fan and no battery was detected even though I have a battery plugged in.
Please can you help its urget!!!!

Woah.......that video was made by a 10 year old.  Yeah, no on that.
    noisy fan reasons:
A: you notice it more in a quiet room (the typical case) which is normal, all is AOK
B: fuzz and dust has caked onto the blades causing the fan hub to get off balance and make a buzzing sound.
C: fan rotor is going bad and making a whirring or buzz noise (rare).
D: Fan is spinning up due to excess heat from gaming, heavy graphics (typical, all is OK)
    A and D are normal
    B and C are not.
If B and C continue for a long time (B is just a cleaning), they eventually cause the fan to either sieze and/or die.
Make appt. with apple for diagnostics, however WHILE you have it apart, clean the fan good.  compressed air and Qtips.
Its likely your fan rotor is dying.
