Fan noise when I Target Disk Mode - power supply or 500 GB drive, or RAM?

I have a Revision B iMac G5 which falls squarely in the power supply replacement program and has had the power supply replaced twice. I'm wondering if my extra RAM, or larger hard drive could be to blame for the fan speeds upramping at random during normal operation, and always when I Target Disk Mode the machine. I have a Western Digital WDC WD5000KS-00MNB0
and two 1 GB RAM modules with the following spec PC3200U-30330.
Before I try to pin down the cause one by one, has anyone noticed whether there are 500 GB drives on these Macs which will not up the fan speeds? Has anyone noticed whether target disk mode on these models will not increase the fan speeds when RAM is upgraded to 2 GB?

I have the same iMac as yours. Changed the original 80 gig hdd to a 250 gig. Both drives are seagate barracudas. I also upgraded the memory to 2gigs. The fan noise was terrible.
6 months later a ram module gives up the ghost. I originally thought hard drive, so purchased a Western digital 500 gig WDC WD5000AACS-00ZUB0. (The green power series).

Power Mac G4 stuck in Target Disk Mode

The other night I put my Gigbit Ethernet into Target Disk Mode so I could migrate my files to a newer machine (a mirrored drive door G4 with dual 1.42mhz processors). After the migration was complete (which took 9 hours), I tried ejecting the target disk but got a perpetual spinning beach ball and had to force everything off. Unfortunately, either because my newer machine came with a faulty Tiger installation, or my migration messed the installation up - the finder kept crashing and things such as "Get Info" wasn't working- I had to endeavor to get a working version of Tiger on the newer machine. I wanted to clone my older drive to my newer drive.
Futzing around for over an hour to try to gain access to my old Power Mac's hard Disc, which was still, according to the bouncing Icon on the screen, in target disk mode, I could not access the drive at all from the newer machine. When I tried, such as by double clicking on its desktop icon, by right clicking on the same Icon, or if I went into the system preferences to change the startup disk with the gigabit ethernet attached, I got the perpetual spinning beach ball. Also, I could not access the drive from the disk utility app that is on the Tiger install DVD. Luckily, I had a pretty fresh bootable backup of the gigabit ethernet on a firewire drive that I cloned to my newer computer. I just have a handful of files that I want to transfer from the gigabit ethernet if I had my drothers.
Am I screwed here? Is there a way to force my Gigabit Ethernet out of Target Disk Mode without hooking it up to another computer? If it's possible to get the Gigabit Ethernet to boot again successfully, I can transfer my file over my network. Any help would be appreciated.

I am confused...it sounds to me like what you wish to do is to make an exact copy of the hard disk in your Gigabit Ethernet and apply that copy to the drive in your MDD, correct?
From what I understand, you are saying you cannot access your GE's hard disk using target disk mode? Or am I mistaken? Also, can you not boot up normally on the GE's hard disk? Is there something wrong with it?
The easiest way to clone a disk is to just make a disk image of the hard disk you wish to keep, and then apply that disk image to the destination disk. Disk utility can perform all this very easily, and pretty quickly. Of course, if you are having trouble booting in target disk mode, this can be a problem...
I'm still kind of confused on what exactly is the problem, and what you are trying to accomplish. Could you please explain a little more and answer the questions above? Much appreciated.

MP really heats up in target disk mode

I understand that, since my computer is not controlled by OS when in Target Disk Mode, the fans will run to prevent overheating.
What I don't understand is, why does the machine actually start running so hot, when I'm not engaging the RAM, processors, video, etc. Is there anything I can do?
I can't measure internal temp, because it's in target disk mode, but it feels as hot as if I'm compressing video, running large audio apps, crunching Flash, etc.

Maybe this won't help you, but rather than run it in FW Target Mode, the setup I use is quite simply have the Mac Pro Quad and the PPC G5 Quad Power Mac on the same Ethernet network, and I can access each of them indistictly from either one.
The temperatures remain very cool in both machines, as measured by Hardware Monitor on each computer.
The two machines share the same keyboard, mouse and tablet through a simple USB switch, and the dual, side-by-side monitors have front panels input switches, so the two machines share them too.
Since I have no clue as to why you use FW Target Mode, it's entirely possible my arrangement would be of no use to you.

Can't start MacBook from disk, target disk mode, etc.

I'm working on a 2007 MacBook (2.16 processor). It crashed this morning and I can't get it to start from a DiskWarrior media, Drive Genius media, OS 10 install disk, external DVD player or in target disk mode.
I can hear the drive clicking occasionally, so I'm fairly certain it's fried, but why won't the logic board allow an alternate boot? Maybe the crash fried the logic board?

It should first ask you to select your language. After you choose your language, click the "Utilities" menu to find Disk Utility.

Target Disk Mode Installation

I have an iBook (doesn't have a DVD drive) that I would like to install Leopard on from my DVD installation disk. Since the iBook's HD only has 1 partition, is it possible to do an Erase and Install while in target disk mode using another computer's DVD drive? I am concerned that erasing the HD will have some effect on the computer's ability to stay in target disk mode.

From the host computer, launch Disk Utility.app, and select the hard drive you have in target disk mode from the list to the left. Click the Partitions tab, then Options. You should be able to select "GUID Partition Scheme". Now is also a good time to name the hard drive; name it "Macintosh HD". Click on the Partition button again to apply the changes. Quit Disk Utility, and follow the prompts from the installation disc, selecting the iBook as the destination volume for installation.

Migration Assistant vs. Target Disk Mode

I'm trying to migrate an account via Target Disk Mode from a PPC G4 tower with multiple drives. Only one of the drives is showing up (number 2 out of 4) and it's not the system drive. Any idea how I can get the other drives to appear? They do not show up in Disk Utility, either.

Change the position of the drives in the computer or use another method. Target Disk mode only connects to the master drive on the ATA 0 bus, and on newer Macs, the internal optical drive.

Power Mac G4 1.25Dual shuts down when pressing T for target disk mode

I am hoping someone might be able to help me with this. I am trying to put my G4 dual 1.25Ghz into target disk mode to transfer my apps and settings to my new Quad G5. I start the G4, hold "t", and instead of showing me the comforting bouncing firewire symbol, the computer shuts down completely. Restarting it without holding "t" will result in normal bootup. I have tried a different keyboard and power cable to no avail. I have reset open firmware, reset the PMU all to no avail. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response Dale. Unfortunately the computer I am putting into Target Disk Mode (The G4 1.25Dual) definitely has an ATA bus. I use target disk mode with other computers in the studio almost daily so was somewhat surprised to see that this one just shuts down instead. I am still hoping someone might have some insight.

Target Disk Mode = MAX FANS!

I know I'm not the only one with this issues as almost every Mac I've ever used has done this.
Why is it that when you run your Mac in target disk mode, the fans slowly rev up until they hit max speed, and then it just stays that way. EVEN IF THE COMPUTER IS IDLE AND NOT DOING ANYTHING!!!!
I think this is kind dumb. In Target Disk mode, only the hard drive is active. Everything else like the video card, processor, etc is not active as that is what the other computer is for. Only the hard drive is running, so why do the fans need to be maxed when only one component is running when any other time the fans never come on that high unless i'm processing video or doing something intensive like that.
Any ideas?

Because the OS normally controls the fans, using the computer's activity and the processor to calculate the needed speed and send the request. When the computer is in target disk mode, there's nothing to control them, so they do everything they can to ensure the computer doesn't overheat.

Macbook in target disk mode locks up when trying to transfer files to another computer. Suggestions?

A week ago I installed snow leopard on my girlfriend's macbook without backing anything up. Dumb idea I know. The installation failed multiple times. I ran her computer in target disc mode to try to save what files I could. Now when I try to transfer files it will freeze up at different times. Sometimes I can transfer a huge amount of data like 4GB's and the other times it locks up trying to transfer 4kB's. I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out. I can see the files but can not transfer them.
Any suggestions or past similar past experiences?

Have you noticed when you plug the drive in whether its making any sounds? You can put your ear up to the drive on the Macbook. Its located on the right hand front sided of the top case.
Also, check to see if the target disk mode icon is moving after a few minutes. If the firewire icon has stopped moving it usually indicates that theres something seriously wrong (probably mechanical) with the drive.
Id definitely give Disk Warrior a try. Especially if you have a situation where you can hear the drive running or spin up but it doesn't make any sound after that. Hope this helps.

You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...

Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

When/Why is TARGET DISK mode necessary?

I am hoping for some frank and practical advice from the Mac Gurus.
The background is that I am about a year and a half into a move to mac from a "PC" (really Windows XP on Boot Camp on my Mac Pro) and I now have both the MacPro running Snow Leopard and the MacBookPro running Snow Leopard.
I had a heck of a time with permissions and other assorted complications in trying to get my data MOVED from the PC environment and now I am finding that I still have assorted issues (various errors and permissions and file in use etc) in MOVING data from the MBP to the MacPro. My routine now is to COPY data from one machine to the other machine and then to go back and DELETE the folder on the originating computer. I do this because if I force a move by holding the option key down, I find that I am a total and complete loss as to WHAT has been moved and what has not been moved and if the folder that was being moved has multiple SUB-FOLDERS with files in them it is almost impossible for me to determine how to recover from this - effectively - crash. Previous advice has been to simply do an Undo but this is impractical in the sense that I cannot stop my day simply because I want to move a folder that will take a couple of minutes.
Also, I am now trying to make sure that I PLUGIN to Ethernet and TURN OFF the Wifi in order to make sure that I am moving data via Ethernet.
To be honest the decision to COPY data is a new one and I am not sure how effective this is going to be but I have been running into a lot of errors when I was force moving data. This always seemed to me to be a much "cleaner" way to do this since it meant I was not open to the possibility of making a mistake as to what had been moved already (in a hectic day or with a long time for a copy of data) and it also seemed to me to be a good check that everything had been copy-moved since the computer was deleting the originating folder, instead of my doing it manually.
Anyway, long story short -
1. Are there any "cleaner upper routines' that I should be running on these two machines to prevent these various errors and/or to check that everything on each machine is copascetic?
2. /When/ do you decide to boot into Disk Mode and do you basically check the size of your large folders before Moving or Copying Data in order to do this? I assume you can only use target disk mode in firewire is that right?
3. How do folks work in a large networked office with big amounts of data moving around? I mean, is my experience typical and if not, why am I having such difficulty with this?

I'm a bit confused on how to set up the macs to do a file transer in target disk mode. I am transferring files from an imac to a macbook pro. I have the cable 6pin to 9pin. Now what I can't remember (apple.com instructions is what confused me) is on which computer do I hold down the 'T' on start up? Is it the computer I am transferring the files to? ( in this case the macbook pro). I use to do this fairly often, but not recently, and I have forgotten. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The hard drive is failing to such an extent that I can't currently use the computer, only things like utility mode etc. I have connected it unto my iMac and using a Firewire in target disk mode, I am attempting to move files across using that mode. The HD of the Macbook Pro appears in the IMac devices menu and I copy and paste the appropriate folders/files but as I do this I get a progress bar which says "preparing to copy" but then nothing appears to happen. Any ideas on what to do? Is there a password or other issue here that I am over-looking. Perhaps the hard drive of my macbook pro is so corrupted that I can't move files over. Any help would be great?

Try moving smaller groups of files. I' guessing that you don't have a backup huh?

Why MBP heats when working in target disk mode?

I connect my MBP to iMac using target disk mode through Thunderbolt interface, close the lid and work on iMac booted from MBP's disk. My understanding is that in this mode MBP should consume very little energy because CPU and GPU are mostly inactive. But I can feel that MBP actually heats up considerably. It not critically hot, but still hotter than I would expect. Can someone explain why this happens?

For FireWire Target Disk Mode, if there are two drives connected to the same IDE bus, I believe only the one that is set as Master is accessible from the "other" computer. So it's possible that your optical drive is Master and hard drive is Slave, in your config.
Copying the files to the external drive, while the iMac G4 is still bootable, was a good move.
Once the data is safe, you might try the following (assuming you are able to continue starting up that iMac). Download a cloning utility, such as Carbon Copy Cloner

Clone the internal drive volume to a FireWire external drive volume. Set System Preferences Startup Disk pane to start up from the clone on the FireWire drive, and try to start up from the clone. While started up from the FireWire drive, you can run Disk Utility on the internal drive. Maybe you can do a Repair Disk successfully.
You can also use Disk Utility to completely erase the internal drive. Be sure to select the internal DRIVE (not the volume indented under the drive) in the sidebar, then go to the Erase tab. Doing an erase in this way will re-partition and reformat the hard drive. That may get rid of your data corruption problem.
Then, clone the clone back to the internal drive, and try to start up from it. If there was an underlying hardware problem on the hard drive, this will not fix it. But if it was just data corruption at the volume level, that iMac G4 may still have some life left.
