Fan on I Mac G5

There has ben a lot of discussion and talk about the possible overheating problems with the G5 I Mac.
I walked into the apple store the other day and had a look at the same mac as what I have. It was dead quiet. The fan didn't even come on. My fan runs the whole time and varies in speed once I wake it up.
I wouldn't say there is a great deal of heaton the machine but there is definnitly a lot more noise on my machine as opposed to the one I looked at in the store.
Could someone plese elaborate for me before I pack up the machine and ship it off to the repair centre. It is quite a way from where I live..
Many Thanks
Dave

The fans do come on, you just dont hear them as much with the redesign Apple did on the iSight iMac G5. I had the Rev A and now have the Rev C one and lemme tell you, there is a big differnce between the two.
It runs cooler, more quiet, faster (using a bigger processor and faster new ram), and more reliable ( Apple redesigned the internals of this machine learning from the first 2 incarnations of the iMac G5. Most of the heat generating internal components have been moved to higher postions within the case so as not to "bake" the rest of the motherboard.(which was a major problem with some of the rev A and B machines.))

  • Broken Fan on 2011 Mac mini / If you are upgrading the hd in your mini please read

I need help with a broken fan. I broke the plastic plug off the fan and need help making sure i connect the wire to the correct blade. If someone is feeling really nice could you unscrew the fan, flip it over, and with the text on the sticker facing right side up(so that you can read it) tell me where each line connects. the top being number 1, below that being number 2 and so one. The connections on the logic board.... the closest to the ram being 1 the next being 2 and so on. I know this is a lot to ask, but it will be a huge help. Thank you in advance to anyone willing to take the time to do this.

  • Cost of replacing a fan in a mac book pro

HOw much does it cost to have the fan in 15 inch mac book pro replaced

The last time I had my fans replaced (2011) the cost of each fan was $17. Labor was about $34 for a total cost of $68. But I had both fans replaced. This was on a 2006 MacBook Pro so your prices may be different.

  • How do I fix lag issues and a continuous fan on my mac?

This morning I turned on my mac and right away it starts running very slowly and laggy. The fan has been running continuously as well. I first tried to restart the computer, but the fan didn't even stop for the restart, so that fixed nothing. I then shut it down for about 2 minutes then turned it back on again, nothing changed.  I verified both my hard drive and the startup disk and both were said to be fine. I then installed a software update, I didn't think that would help cause it seemed like a hardware issue but it was worth a try, no luck again with that. Anyway it is still running quite slowly and laggy and I'm not sure what to do. Should I just shut it down for an hour or so and give it a chance to cool off? I just can't understand why the fan won't calm down a bit. Please help me, thank you!

  • 24" iMac - fan comes on, Mac won't sleep

Sometimes when I try to "sleep" my Mac, the fan comes on, the screen blanks, and then immediately it comes to life. Other times the fan comes on, even though I don't think it's overheating, and then maybe I can sleep it, and maybe I can't.
Anyone else seen this problem? It's not the end of the world, but it's pretty annoying!!

I spent 25 minutes on the phone with AppleCare and we did a lot of things like resetting the PMU, the PRAM, reparing the hard drive, trying to do the same with another user account. It turns out it's a hardware problem and I need to send the computer to a service center...
Basically: no solution we can find on our own.
My iMac is 20 days old so that makes me quite unhappy...

  • How do I fix a faulty I/O fan on my Mac Pro (2008)?

My I/O: USB, Firewire  quit working reliably.  Took it to the Apple Store.  They informed me that the I/O fan was faulty.  I assume this led to high temperature in the I/O section.  They said that replacing the fan would probably fix the prob, but that my Mac Pro is now a legacy machine so they do not have access to parts to fix it.  I am looking for either a source of I/O fans and instructions how to replace or a suggestion where to get this done.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Dewey Dykstra wrote:
Hi.  The manuals and the software look very useful.  Thank you.  I can clearly see what the fans look like.  As I indicated to Grant Bennet-Alder, I was told by a fellow in the Apple Store after looking at my machine on a test bench that there was a problem with the I/O fan, but apparently this is not how the fans are labelled.  Hence, I do not know which of the fans is problematic.
A1186 is the Early 2008 Mac Pro. Page 181 in the manual shows the various fans and their part numbers. With the side cover off, you should be able to easily see all but the power supply fan either working or not. With a good flashlight shining in the front of the Mac, the PS fan should be visible if you've only got one optical drive and you should feel a breeze out the back at the top if it's running. Or, pull out the optical drive carrier and the fan should be visible.

  • Excessive Fan Noise in Mac Pro (Late 2008)

Starting in October of 2009, at about one year of age, my Mac Pro started cycling through periods of excessive fan noise: the fan goes from quiet/inaudible to so loud that I cannot hear talking on the radio in the room.
    Re-set the PRAM.
    Re-set the SMC.
Ran HW Test (Full test) and got the following: 4sns/1/40000000:tcbh -127.500
    Called Apple Support.
Re-ran Hardware Test showed no problem.
Did nothing more. Machine seemed fine.
In January of 2010, the problem returned.
Ran HW test (Full test) and got the following: 4sns/1/40000000:tcbh -127.500
Per instructions from Apple over the phone, I took the Mac Pro to a "Genius" at the local Apple Store "Genius Bar."
The "Genius" booted the Mac Pro on the store network (while I waited) and got the same error message. The "Genius" said he would order some parts and install them.
    Left machine.
Received call one day later from another "Genius." He said the first "Genius" was wrong. They've been running the machine continuously with no error message at all. (BTW, he treated me like an idiot, though he clearly didn't have all the facts in the store's own record about the machine. Typical 20-something IT kid.) After some argument, he agreed to run more tests. Received another call fro yet another "Genius" telling me the machine was OK.
    I picked up the machine.
The fans continue their behavior, BUT HW test (full test) now shows NO error.
At rope's end. Clearly Apple will be of no assistance, despite the warranty I paid for.
The machine cannot be used in the same room as I as I cannot talk on the phone, etc., with the fans running so loud, which they appear to do every 30 to 60 minutes.
    Any ideas?
    Some thoughts:
The problems started not long after installing 10.6. Coincidence?
I am not sure, but I think the fans go nuts whenever I use iTunes or Quicktime. I have not tested this and I could be wrong, but whenever I have those programs closed, the fans seem to settle down.
If no one has any ideas, I'm thinking of selling the machine and getting something else, as it is not useful "as is."

There are reports of the new MacPros having heat issues rendering audio (QuickTime/ iTunes).
Seems to be a hardware configuration issue not a software problem.

  • I need an inlet fan for Power Mac G5

I have a Late 2004 Power Mac G5 that needs an inlet fan any good websites?

Hey Miles, Of course the fans work.  Why would I offer a non working fan?  Anyway I need some info as to which fan you need.  They are all called inlet fans.  There is the two in the back the two in the middle that slide out for access to the memory and the one up by the hard drive / optical drive bay.  The fans are all off my now dead Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz.  This is the PCI-X Quad so the Fans all seem to be the same as the DP PCI-X Macs but not 100% sure.  Do you know the part # you need?  I'll take a pic and post once I get home from work.

  • HT1338 my fans on i mac 27" are running constantly. from when i stared, to when i shut it down, is bothersome to listen to the noise. any advise?.. ps. i downloaded the latest updates.

my fan are constantly running, what do i do to control the fans?. it is bothersome to have to listen to the noise at all times

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

  • Fans to cool Mac

I am one of those people who use a small fan placed up to the front grill to lower my Macs temperatures. Using Temperature Monitor I've seen temperatures drop sometimes as much as 4 degrees. Not enough for me however as I'm trying to lower them enough to prevent my fans ungodly howling if I switch to Highest Power mode. I think that a significant shift downward in the cpus heat would accomplish what I want because I just observed an example. Lately it's been cool in the mornings here and a few times when I've turned my mac on, the cpus are at least 10 degrees lower than what their standard warmed up temps would be. Sometimes Cpu A's starting temp is about 42c. If I then use the highest power setting my fans are quiet for about the next five minutes. I'm sure if I could find an effective way to lower my cpus temps my fans would sound like they should.
So my latest effort should be of interest to at least one poster here. I built a small version of a swamp cooler from plans I found on the net using copper tubing wrapped around a six inch fan, a small pond pump and an ice and water filled ice chest. It definitely produced much cooler air than the fan alone. The only problem is I couldn't use it. My tower is placed right next to my monitor and the magnetic component of the fan created havoc with my monitor. Now I've noticed that the original fan I used to use has a slight effect as well, but it must have a much smaller magnet in it because it's hard to see.
As impossible as it seems in this little cramped room I'm going to try moving the tower well away from the monitor and see if it make a difference. But I'm wondering if just having something with a magnet in it would do any damage to the tower components itself.
Does anyone think it would? Does anyone think that removing my heat sink and applying a new coating of thermal grease might result in a lowering of my cpus temperatures?
And for GDP, forgive my lack of manners for not thanking you for the star you gave me in celebration of Japamacs ascension in the angelic ranks of Mac-dom. I just couldn't find that link again to do so.

    Hey GDP!
Hope all is well with you and yours!
Yeah, had a feeling that would be so... The fan I originally used must have a very small magnet in it. And my self made air conditioner fan must have a large one (not bad sitting in the corner of my room though, away from the computer, darn thing actually works). So the whole idea's been abandoned. Interestingly I was able to move my Mac and its front grill closer to a real air conditioner producing really cold air. Like my first little fan, it drops the CPU temps around four degrees... eesh.
I'm pretty sure now that if I lived in the Arctic and kept the tower outside it would still only be about 4 degrees cooler. Cooling quest over. And, because of other concerns as well, another Mac is on its way.

  • Fans on New Mac Pros?

How do the new Mac Pros dissipate heat? Where are the fans?

  • Heat questions as well as fan speed on mac pro late 2013

my temperature currently is 118 running some programs, what number should i be worried about seeing? and does it harm the computer to leave fan speed at maximum or i would guess you would do that when it gets to a certain temp? just wondering what that temp is where i should apply maximum speed to fan

you want to dig into Intel's TJMax then and even Intel isn't fully forthcoming.
People run PRIME95, do an Intel stress test (pretty sure that one is Windows only).
The fans as far as Mac Pro and what I hear just don't kick in until heat builds, and it is easier to boost and improve air flow first, then to push out hot air.
The buy that develops Hardware Monitor is very much in the know on temperature sensors. And his program will map temps over time, you can set alerts.
It doesn't take much to see 10-20*C jumps in temps from the smallest action. The 2013 is still new but people have been stressing them and looking to see how much air, how hot the exhaust, and how much noise and active the fan gets.

  • Fan noise unbearable ; Mac Pro 3.2 GHz 8-core, purchased in March...

    Hi,
The noise from the top rear fan has steadily become unbearable. There is a constant rattle that I can even hear from an adjacent room.
This is not a tick tick tick of the fan hitting a ribbon cable - or the sound of a jet enginethat occurs when the fans get stuck in top gear. It is a constant and irritating rattle like a badly oiled or misaligned wheel. Or a cheap fan.
I am a film composer and can not work with this noise in my room! I certainly can no longer record acoustic instruments anywhere near my MacPro.
Do I get the machine replaced? The fan is sealed and looks nearly inaccessible. I have removed the drives from bay 3 and 4 to see if that made a difference. It didn't.
    Help!
    Thanks

    Hi Matthias,
    Thanks for your reply.
I've sinced been looking at other forums on the web and found this thread here at Apple discussions:

The sound my Mac is making is also like a noisy fridge... Does that sound like a power supply issue?
I also have the dreaded ATI 2600 card. And a WD drive...
The noise really seems to be coming from that sealed enclosure above drives 3 and 4. What else is in there apart from the power supply? Do you know?
    Cheers.
