Fan or cooling system on my Portege

My fan doesn't seem to be working on my portege 100. The computer is getting very hot! what can I do?

HI Malachi,
Check that you system is set for maximum oerformance in the Toshiba Power Management settings. This should ensure maximum fan operation.
If this is set correctly and the fan still does not operate, check that the fan itself is free to rotate (try making the fan turn by blowing through the air intake grille.
It is, of course, possible that the fan unit has failed in which case you will need to return your notebook to an Authorised Service Agent for it to be replaced.

  • 'A problem with the cooling system' error message on Satellite A660

    Hi all,
Hope I can get some help here. I've had about 5 HP laptops after all of them had problems and faults. I got sick of them and therefore got a refund and bought a high spec A660-1FH.
The A660 has been a great laptop for two days until yesterday when I started getting a warning message saying 'A problem with the cooling system has been detected. Please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service'.
The cpu fan works fine as you can here it spinning and the temperature of the i5-460m processor is around 40 degrees for both cores - which seems normal to me. I've noted that it happens only when running on battery and if you switch from eco utility to power saver mode. Its fine when running on the 'balanced' power setting. The fan is louder before when this message appears.
As its under 28 days my retailer swapped it for a brand new one straight away. Got the new one home, and the same message appears again. Has anyone else experienced this. As two laptops have had this, I'm wondering if this is normal for the A660 series laptop or if there is really a hardware issue?!
I have tried to upgrade eco utility and the bios of the laptop but both are the latest versions. Can anyone help or share if they experience a similar issue with their laptop?
    Thanks

In front of me I have Satellite A660-13Q (PSAW3E) and I have it about 6 weeks now. It runs almost 10 hours daily and until now I didnt notice such message or anything else that can be suspect for hardware functionality.
I really dont know why this happen on your notebook and dont think there is anything you can do about it.
I would exchange it again. What you can also try is to contact nearest Toshiba service. Make a call, explain the situation and ask if they can help you with this.

  • Clean up cooling system - do it yourself or give it to service

    Hi,
I'm a happy owner of X200 for a year. Recently the cooling fan started turning on more often - it's time to clean the cooling system. My question is - will I loose warranty if it do it myself ? (disassembly laptop, put new cooling paste, clean the dust) Maybe I should give it to service? Any people experienced in this topic?
Has anyone disassembled his X200 to do these things? Is it very complicated compared to other laptops?
Thank you for answers in advance,
    Kind regards,

if you take out the heatsink/fan then there is a good chance that your warranty maybe voided. If cleaning the vane of the fans and wiping off any dusts don't work, then just send it in, and the depot will change a new fan/heatsink for you.

  • Cooling system and overclocking?

I've been a PC user for about 22 years now and I'm about to take the plunge and buy a Mac Pro. However I am curious about what type of cooling system the Mac Pro uses for the CPU's? I understand the new 45nm processors run allot cooler so was just curious.
What about over clocking? Can a Mac Pro be over clocked and will it still run cool enough with the current cooling system?
Was reading about someone over clocking the new chips on a PC to just over 5ghz awhile back so I thought maybe I could do that on a Mac.

I respectfully disagree with your statement. Take in consideration that your T500 may be around 6 years old and most surely the thermal compound is not so fresh as it was on day one, hence loosing its cooling properties.
I have 3 T500 and 2 W500 with switchable graphics (all second hand). For all of them I have renewed the thermal compound with a good quality one (used Artic Silver 5 in some and Artic Cooling MX-2 in others), in some cases (two if my memory is right) I replaced the heatsinks and fans as well.
All 6 of them have survived several Furmark heavy tests (one of my preferred ones is the 1920x1080 15 min burn-in test) with peaks around 80°C/85°C with a GPU load of 100%. The cooling worked fine in this cases, I see no flaws in design or whatsoever.
Also consider that Thinkpads are/were designed as workstation machines, no gaming rigs. Which kind of games are you using if I may ask?

  • 2.7 GHz PowerMac done in by leaking cooling system. THE REST OF THE STORY

This is the story of what happened when my PowerMac went down for the count. I'm posting it because Apple did a such stellar job at resolving a thorny service problem.
I had a Dual 2.7 GHz PowerMac G5 (purchased back in November 2005) that was a major headache all this year. It quit working entirely in March after months of crashes, corrupted drives, and loudly spinning fans. As I was putting the Mac into a box to take it to the local Apple Store for troubleshooting, I noticed a small puddle of what turned out to be coolant. I'd heard the cooling systems on these Macs wasn't very reliable and costly to fix, so I figured it would have to be trashed. Sure enough, when I got to the Apple Store, it was still leaking and the Genius said it would cost upwards of $1000 to fix.
I wasn't happy to hear that, but what could i do? It was out of warranty.
I bought a new 27-inch iMac as a replacement and went back to work. While on the way, I started wondering if I could fix the Mac myself as a hobby project. At work, I posted a question on Apple's Discussions describing what had happened to the Mac and got these replies:
+You should have posted - and looked - on the PowerMac G5 forum, and read up on theG5 Coolant Leak report, and how to deal with it. So check out the Discussion and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com report on the issue (under Systems).+
    +http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/G5coolantleaks.html+
    and
+Read the xclr8yourmac link and call Apple Customer Service. They replace a lot of leakers with new MacPros if you say there is a fire or electrocution hazard. Read and learn.+
So I checked out the xlr8yourmac site and was shocked. I had no idea how much leaking had occurred, but after seeing photos of the damage to other Macs, the possibility of mine having caught fire while unattended gave me the willies because I'd been leaving my Mac running during the day so the Tools app could run thorough tests.
I called Apple support and told the rep how upset I was over a potential safety problem that was not mentioned on the Support website. He transferred me to Customer Relations where that rep made arrangements for me to get the Mac serviced.
I returned the iMac and gave them the G5 for repair. Two weeks later, I got the Mac back. They had replaced the rear exhaust fans and cable, the power supply, SuperDrive, 2.7 GHz multiprocessor, power supply cover, and the computer enclosure.
In short, they gave me back a resurrected G5 for no charge!
And that was a happy ending that lasted all of five months, during which the fans slowly increased in volume and CPU temps crept higher.
Last month everything went weird. The Mac would go to sleep in the middle of file transfers, sometimes it would hang on restart, and other faults. I called Apple Tech Support and set up a service appointment at the Apple Store.
A week later, I had shelled out $250 for a replacment video card (which seemed strange because video had been about the only thing that hadn't been malfunctioning!) and, fingers crossed, took the Mac home.
It ran worse after the service than before! Fans were screaming, it would crash at the Finder or hang after restart, often wouldn't recognize the Leopard DVD, etc. (But hey, at least video still worked!)
I was getting frustrated at this point, so I called Apple again and worked with a higher echelon tech who told me to reset the PMU switch. It seemed to work, the fans quieted and the machine restarted without hanging. But it seemed dog slow, so I checked Activity and found that one of the CPUs wasn't working.
Another call to Apple where the really helpful tech said it was probably a logic board (the one component that hadn't been replaced already!) and that I should take it in so they could determine if that was the problem. If it was, he would see about tying the repair to the previous service since it was likely that the logic board had been damaged by the coolant leak.
I took it in for repair last Saturday, keeping fingers crossed that this time they'd fix the machine. On Friday, I got a call from them saying that they had "stripped some screws" while performing the service, so the computer couldn't be reassembled. At first I was stunned by the news--now what?!
It got better: As compensation, they replaced my 5-year-old Dual 2.7 GHz PowerMac G5 with a brand new 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Mac Pro G5! Gotta hand it to Apple, they did what it took to resolve a maddening problem with one of their products in a way that left me feeling I'd been treated fairly.

Wow! Can't believe they'd give you a new machine on that 5 year old paper weight! Though it was a design flaw. Did you have Apple Care? Just wondering in case mine does it.
I've never had any trouble with my dual 2.5, bought it new in early '05 when the 2.7 came out. I've added memory and larger drives. I've had a problem with a dvd drive I put in it. It would not release the disc on the first eject, if it was a DVD. It's definitely the drive since I now have it in a different machine and it does the same problem. Now I have a Dual Layer burner from a 2.3 dual core.
Other problem I've had with it was a Radeon 9200 card I put in it to get a third display never worked right. I had ATI replace it at least twice and I think it's just a design flaw with the G5. It would stutter on the connected display, slow response time and if iTunes was running the sound would pop.
Removing the card fixed it so the card is back in the box. I'm guessing it would work fine in a G4. But yeah, all problems with 3rd party stuff.
Other than that, no cooling problems or anything else.
I did some speed tests between my 2.3 DC and the 2.5 and the 2.5 is noticeably faster. About a gigaflop. Faster memory on the 2.3 and graphics but slower processor and system bus.
I'm guessing the 4 fastest G5's are the Quad 2.5, then the Dual 2.7, Dual 2.5, then 2.3 DC.

  • Cooling system

I have a Toshiba L755D - S5204. Today I turned it on and there was only a black screen. So I restarted it. After that I received a message that said "A problem with the cooling system has been detected" and to turn the computer off. I could hear the fans starting and stopping over and over. Also the screen was darkened. So can anyone tell me what I should do?

  • 3rd party cooling systems?

Living in Southern California, I have a hard time keeping my G5 tower cool during the summer. My cpu heat widget has been showing tempatures between 139 to 150 degrees.
Does anyone know of any 3rd party cooling systems out there that might help bring this number down?
I have an old pci card that was a cooling fan, but it requires the type of old power cables you'd find in a G3 or G4 tower.
I've heard about liquid coolant systems. Anyone know about those?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Enio;
My Quad is always reporting CPU tempertures between 140 and 150 no matter what the room temperture is. I am running F@H on all four CPUs so they are all 100% busy. The only thing that changes in my system as the room temperture goes up is the fan speed. I don't think your temperture are out of line.

  • IBook G4 'Cooling system' broken - any advice??

My iBook G4's cooling system/fan does not seem to work anymore. It reaches up to 64 degrees(F). Any help/advice please. Could I have switched it off accidently when I changed my screen saver/sleep timers??
    Any advice welcome.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might try running the Apple Hardware Test. It should show up an error code if the fan has failed.
    Good luck!

  • Qosmio G20-106 cooling system problem

I bought Qosmio G20-106 with XP Media Center and other cool stuff in Vienna a few days ago, and brought it home (Sarajevo, Bosnia&Herzegovina) yesterday and turned it on for the first time. It worked perfectly for first ten hours. After that I constantly get the message about "Cooling system problem" and to repair my notebook, and click OK.
My CPU temperature is 57C most of the time, and it raises up to 70-80C max. I also hear cooling fans running from time to time.
The system sometime slows down, but most of the time it works fine and fast.
Please give me some advice what should i do, cause I cannot take it back to Vienna just for this!
    Thank you!

    Hello Dario
I am very often on this forum but I have never heard about this problem on Qosmio notebook. I really dont know why this happen. Please check this page http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_gaspLocator.jsp?pf=true .
There you can find an Authorized service partner in Sarajevo. Try to contact them and explain this issue with your Qosmio. I hope that they can help you. If not you must exchange it someday by dealer where you bought it.
If you find out more about this problem please let me know why this happen. I am very interested about that.
    Good luck!

  • Satellite U945-S4110 Cooling System FAILURE

I purchased 2 Satellite U945-S4110 on the same day 19 months ago...BOTH ultrabooks have now stopped working due to a cooling system issue.  I paid quite a bit of money for these ultrabooks BRAND NEW, now I'm screwed because they both went out at once.  I will NEVER buy another Toshiba product!  If only one would have went out that would have been understandable, but not BOTH at the same time!  It is apparent that this ultrabook has some serious issues if it only works for less than 2 years, then just stops working.

likely just dust/dirt in heatsink/fan.  local computer shop very easily clean it for you at some nominal cost or you could open it/them up and do it your self.  not a big deal

  • Noisy liquid cooling system

I have an HP Pavilon Phoenix with liquid cooling. The fan has become very noisy. After 2 hours with support today to find the noise, we found where it was coming from. They gave me a part number 657398-004 or 657398-003. This part is not in stock and they had no idea when it would be available. A google search turned up one part supplier but this part is discontinued. My question is does anyone know of a compatible liquid cooling system that I could use to replace the defective one?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Thank you Photoray002.  I am not really comfortable pulling a fan like this and lubricating. What I was hoping to do was get a part number to order a new liquid cooling system and have it installed. I will probably have the installer attempt to find and install a liquid cooling system if your suggestion does not solve the problem. I am a little annoyed that HP does not have the part in stock and they have no idea when if ever it will be received. Initally they were going to have me send my tower for repair. Who knows how long it would have taken to fix.

  • Zaleman Resorator Fanless Water cooling system

    Hello everyone
Have not been here in a while....
I was wondering if any of you have tried or have the new Zalman Resorator water cooling system?
I just installed it on my system (cooling CPU and GPU) and after running sisoft sandra burn in utility for the CPU for 6 hours straight I only saw a 1 degree c increase in temps I have the CPU overclocked from 2.8 to 3.2 229fsb 9800 pro is not overclocked. Temps were 51 idle and 52 after 6 hours of the burn in utility.
It seems that this system Holds temps very consistent between idle and load.
All case fans were set at 50% spd.
This system is soooo quite now.
    any thoughts?

Have gotten popup cooling system problem  turn off computer and service twice now
2 months ago turn it off went away. Again the other day kept popping up even  after restart but next
day and since no sign of it  pc monitor looks fine CPU temp and fan speed. Seemed to popup when
CPU temp showed 49%  pop up then fan would start. Good for a while then the same.
No dust around fan or heatsink. Could a bios up date fix  checked there is one foe my system, or does anyone have another fix?

Are you still having the overheating pop-up? I have been receiving the same annoying error for the past 3 weeks (model L675 S7049). Seeing that I am vigilant about not blocking vents and have inspected and cleaned cooling fins and fan blades, I suspect other issues...heat sensor problem, etc. I did break down today and upgraded to BIOS vers 1.7, up from 1.3. There was a mention of a fan error under ver 1.4 don't know this in anyway is related, but worth a try.

  • LCD 100 PRO 40N error "Check Cooling System"

At our school, we have a Cisco LCD 100 PRO 40N that now shows a message on the screen that states "Check Cooling System".  I have not been able to find any information or documentation on how to do this or how to clear the message.  This message is coming for the LCD, not from the DMP it is connected to. Does anyone have any information that might help?

    Hello James,
"Check Cooling System" message is displayed on the screen when there is an issue with the cooling fan. Couple of things you can do proactively are check for ventilation issues on the back of the LCD screen. Switch it off for around 5-10 minutes and turn it back on. If the issue persists, open a Cisco TAC case to get an RMA.

  • Which cooling system shall i choose???

I'm deciding to buy a cooling system in few months.
I have found out that one of these cooling system are affordable to me.
    They are :
    1.  Thermal Take Spark 7+ (XASER EDITION)
    2.  Thermalright SLK800U
    3.  COOLER MASTER JET 4 (Pentium-4) Copper HSF
    4.  ZALMAN CNPS7000-Cu
Which one is the most suitable and excellent heat dissipation among them??? You also can recommend me any other cooling devices. Well other than purchasing them, what other safety steps must i take so my system is in good temperature???

    What about the noise??
As you say----it depends on what you are looking for and the parameters involved.
I personally can't stand noisy coolers.
ANY big mass of copper with a high speed fan will cool pretty well.
What I want is a QUIET cooler that cools well enough to overclock decently.
What types of quiet fans would produce results better than the Zalman 7000 when mounted on the Thermalright???
Also, hate to say it----but in less than a year----the Zalman 7000A Cu is basically outclassed compared to the more efficient Heat Pipe Towers like the AeroCool HT-101 and similar models by other companies. Even the Thermalright is using heat pipes now.
What we really need is a test where the SAME fan is used on the different heat sinks----in the exact same case with the exact same ambient temp-----and even then---we would need to measure the noise level each time as air make react differently when hitting each type of HS causing more or less noise.
Only then could we truly say what HS was the best.....
