Fan rattle

This is now the third time I've had a problem with my computer fan.  Apparently, when it gets dirty it begins to make an annoying rattle.  Brought it to Apple under warranty twice where they cleaned the fan housing.  This took care of the problem.  However, after a few months the rattle returns.  I'm no longer under warranty and I am willing to open the back of my MacBookPro and clean it myself.  I need advice on how to open the computer.  Also has anyone else experienced this problem?  If so, what did you do?

I had the same problem. The rattle/ticking just got worse over time. The only way of fixing it was to have the fan replaced by Apple whilst the Mac is still under warranty.

I recently purchased a Mac Mini, and when I first got it, the fan was a quiet blowing noise, but now the fan rattles and whines constantly. What should I do?

    Take it back?

  • Ti4200 VTD 8x (MS-8894) Fan rattling

I have had my GeForce4 Ti4200 VTD 8x (MS-8894) for almost a year, and overall I have been very happy with it.  The problem is that there is a rattling sound that the fan makes at start up.  It used to be quiet enough to ignore, but in the 11 months that I have had the card, its been getting louder and lasting longer.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

a little add on to my last post... I was checking of something else when an idea occured to me.  I googled MSI Ti4200 and wire, and sure enough, there were a couple of people complaining of noise from their card, the fan blades were hitting the fan power wire.  I checked, and sure enough, there it was.  I used a small set of needlenose pliers, and voila!  No noise at all on startup.  Once again, thanks for your help!

  • GS60 Ghost Pro GPU fan rattle

    Hi there
I had my GS60 Ghost Pro (2E-056AU) for around 5 months now and am generally very happy with it. However, recently there has been a rattling noise coming from the GPU fan (left side) whenever the GPU is in use. Has anybody else had this problem? Is there a trick how to fix it by myself?
    Thanks for your support!

sounds like your GPU fan is defected or layer in fan is begining to wear off which means you will have to send laptop into repair and have fan exchanged to new one.

  • Qosmio X300 - One of the two fans rattles abnormally

This started about two weeks ago.
One of the two fans under the laptop rattles abnormally. If I tilt the laptop for a while the rattling stops... but it's embarassing in the very least to have to do that on such an advanced laptop.
Sometimes the rattling stops when the fan's been running a while...
So anyone else had this issue? I've got next business day on-site support but would need to take a day off work if I want them to come out so am tryin to avoid that.
Aanyone had the issue? If so how was it addressed?

right... Toshiba sent someone out today.... and guess what... Toshiba managed to mess the whole thing up!
The way support works (well my understanding of ti following the disaster today) is as follows:
    1) customer logs call with Toshiba
    2) Toshiba order parts necessary and contact a support company that is not actually a part of Toshiba, but is contracted to carry out support
    3) support company replaces parts as necessary
so, i 1) called Toshiba they told me they'd send someone over with 2 cooling fans, 2) they ordered two thermal conductors for the graphics boards (NOT FANS, JUST THE METAL PLATES!!!), 3) support guy came, when i told him what the problem was he was surprised Toshiba gave him thermal conductors and not fans. so we called Toshiba and logged a new call
i had to call Toshiba and log a new call... however, i insisted the operator note in the call records that this is the second time i am calling for the same issue as the first time they gave the poor support guy the wrong parts. now my contract only supports next business day on site visit.... as it's not practical for me to take this laptop with me to work i took a day off to be at home.....
Now that means i'll have to do it again,... so i think, hang on, Toshiba offer 24/7 on site support, so i'll ask them if, as it was their fault, they'll send someone over the weekend. "it's not within our power to do that" toshiba said "you'll have to contact the engineers company and ask them if they'll do it"... i didn't make the mistake, why should i ask?
The engineer didn't make the mistake, so why should his company have to be generous and give me a free day on site on a weekend?
Toshiba made the mistake, they should pay the engineers company to have him back on a weekend.
that is what i shall be arguing on the phone tomorrow (to Toshiba and not the engineering company) when the engineer calls up and no doubt says Toshiba are only paying for me to have a monday to friday service.
A customer should not have to worry about who Toshiba award their contracts to.
Oh, and on the matter of the fans themselves, the engineer took them out, he could find nothing inside... i tapped the fans and am very sure one of them is a lil loose although the engineer didn't think tha should be causing the level of noise he heard. however, he stood there and did hear the awful noice it was making, as if repeatedly scraping against something as the blades rushed past.
So... more updates as soon as possible... but Toshiba really screwed this one up and it's cost me a day of my annual leave... thanks Toshiba.

  • MBP fan rattle noise.

Since I last visited the site has had a revamp but I can't seem to find how to search the forum?
Anyhow I have a problem with my MBP in which I can hear the right fan making a 'rub/click' type rattle noise. It isn't very high RPM perhaps 200-300 RPM judging by per second rate.
When I hold the MBP and tilt the base to different angles the sound varies from clicks to rubs.
I've already had the left fan repaired last year and it appears the same problem is now affecting the right fan.
It sounds like a little air compressor is working and its at a barely tolerable threshold. Problem is I'm sick of taking this machine in. It's had a total of 6 repairs now and I'm pretty sick of it.
Any suggestions? And how do I search the discussions?

It does sound like the other fan's gone, my right fan went a week after the left one ...

  • MSI GE60 0ND Fan rattling/grinding sound temporary fix

Don't do this if you still got warranty.
There are two way to fix this fan sound problem by either replace whole blower with new part or replace the fan bearing. I already order matching part from china. But it would take at least 2 week to ship to me. So it's time for temporary fix.
Remove the fan by remove three screw
    The part number is PAAD06015SL
Next, pry open 4 metal clip
and push the fan blade out
    Apply oil to fan bearing
The regular machine oil I used.
Reverse all step and test it out.
    Enjoy the silence.

Or couple years if you put oil every 6 month. At least this is what is on practice.
However my fan did not go out that easily when you push it.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 fan noise

Yesterday, my macbooks fan all of a sudden started rattling and making lots of noise, just like in this video: http://youtu.be/IdQvf3WPKKA
Restarting the macbook didn't work as the noise would come right back.
I shut it off for the night, with the idea of trying to find a repair center today (my warranty is long gone). But now it doesn't make that noise any more.
I can still hear the fan rattling really silently.
How do I know if the fan is working properly and not overheating the laptop?
Do I have to replace the fan?

  • Harsh rattling sound coming from fan.

Normally, when I use an application that requires a lot of CPU power or when I'm watching a YouTube video, the internal fan speeds up to 6000+ RPM but it started sounding weird the past week. Right when I "wake up" my MacBook from sleep, I here a faint rattling sound coming from where the fan should be but it disipates after a few minutes. When I view a video though, the rattling becomes a bit louder combined with the normal sound of the fan. Also, I noticed when I picked up my macbook when its fan was going fast and tilted it to its sides, the rattling sound corresponds with the movement of the computer (louder each time I tilted it left to right).
Could the fan be broken/loose? I sprayed some air into the keyboard to get rid of dust but nothing changed. I recently ran out of my Applecare warranty last September. Thanks in advance!

    Hey
Sorry to say but you could be looking at a hardware problem. That being said there are still things you can  try.
Try this artile: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 for an SMC reset.
If that does not work make sure all of your software is up to date. If it is, you may have a hardware problem.
Run the Apple hardware test that came on the disc with the computer to see if it comes up with anything... Although sometimes it doesn't even if there is a problem.
    Regards,
    Britt.

  • Strange rattling/loose fan spinning sound?

Every so often, randomly? The fan inside my iMac produces a strange sound, it's not incredibly loud and it can sometimes be quiet but sometimes also a bit louder, it sounds like the fan is loose, rattling or perhaps touching something as it spins? It goes on for perhaps 20 seconds and then stops, sometimes it can be very quiet, or just quiet, sometimes it goes on for shorter or longer periods of time.
I've only had the system say... 6 months, so I'm not terribly worried about it, just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what it could be, and if I could get it repaired even if the issue couldn't be reproduced?
    Many thanks!

I would say go ahead and call AppleCare. They might have you make an appointment at an Apple Store or closer Authorized Service Center. If so, you probably should be prepared to leave it because it's an intermittent problem, but only Apple can make that call.

  • Pavilion dv2 Rattling fan noise

Hi. I recently purchased a Pavilion dv2 1003ax last Oct '09. lately I've been hearing a rattling noise coming from the fan everytime i boot up the system. then after some minutes, the noise will be gone & the fan runs smoothly again.
please advise on what should I do to troubleshoot this hardware problem. Or should I just bring the unit to a Authorized service center?

  • Slight rattle in fan

recently while in the house went it's very quiet, I can hear my fan, with a slight rattle. Nothing really noticeable, just noticed it the other day. I don't think it has always done that or I would have noticed it before.

Get it replaced. The bearing is probably going bad.

  • I've devolped a rattle in the right fan.

I'm wondering if I take it to the genius bar, can they fix it there? Can they even hear it? It would be hard to hear in the store. If I let it go until it gets real loud, could I damage my computer? My nearest Apple store is an hour away and I don't want them to say it alright, because it isn't!

UPDATE #2: Well, after all of my problems with my MBP 1.83 over the last couple of months, they upgraded me to a new MBP C2D 2.16 as a replacement and it showed up today ... no dead pixels, no rattling fan, and it runs MUCH cooler than the MBP. I don't see a noticeable speed increase with day-to-day use, but it is nice to have the new 64 bit chip for when the next version of OSX arrives. Another bonus ... I can use the upgraded 2MB of memory from my lemon MBP in the new MBP C2D

  • Rattling laptop fan

My laptop fan starts making a rattling noise when it runs at high speed during gaming or whenever it decides to run fast. Could it be bearings? Is this covered under warranty?
    Thanks

    Same here ....
My laptop also having this rattling fan+noise when using it around 15 minutes. Been using this laptop around 10 months & just happen since 2-3 months ago.. haven't check yet wether the fan got dust over it or not. When checked using Everest Ultimate, got the temperature around 90 to 97 celcius

  • HP Pavilion dv9550eo fan issue (rattling sound)

For two months ago I vaccumed the fan, but forget to hold the fan still. So the fan did get a very high RPM while I vaccumed. When I've started my PC after this the fan suddenly starts to make a "rattling noise" and the RPM are extremely high. I've used my computer for much gaming earlier, and the RPM and noise have never been like this. What can the problem be? Is the bearings in the fan broken? How can I fix this?
Can I buy a new fan or do it need a whole new heatsink? Have anyone the partnumber so I can order a new part?
    This question was solved.

I bought the entire heatsink: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120837624188&ssPageName=ADME:LU:US:3160
I have some Arctic Silver 5 thermale compund. Is this as good as Artic ceramique2?
I've seen someone use a copper shim at the gpu. I don't have heat issue because I use CoolerMaster Notepal U3, and mount the fan so it blows right up in the cpu/video card. Then the gpu is around 70 degrees celsius while I'm gaming. Do I need a copper shim then? If I use a copper shim, will it last "forever" or do it need to replace it sometimes?
